The SUD scale - or the Subjective Units of Distress Scale - is a way to measure how someone is feeling inside. It has previously been used in medical offices and has now become a tool used by therapists.

I feel that I have thought out my artistic vision statement. I am very sure that my design strength is illustration but I will need to branch out to other design skills in the future like photography or branding in order to stay relevant as the creative industry is looking for multi-skilled designers. I am following in my father’s footsteps and seeing what he does makes me feel like I know what I want to do as well.
I need to collect as much experience as I can before I start working in order to refine my skills. This means going to illustration festivals and asking around or participating in illustration competitions. I can work on my own personal projects as well to add more to my portfolio or resume.
One thing I wrote I would like to revise is finding my own style. Finding a style is good but I should not limit myself to it, limiting my design identity to just one style. On one hand, having one unique style makes it distinct, but on the other hand, multi-skilled designers who can do multiple styles are sought after as well. I will have to strike a balance between the two.
The Courtesy campaign began in 1979 in an attempt to encourage Singaporeans to show courtesy, consideration and kindness to one and all. The campaign mascot, Singa the lion, was introduced in 1982 and it has appeared on posters, billboards and various media advertisements.
The context behind his design was that he was a lion cub to represent Singapore’s status as a young nation. The colours orange, red and yellow colours were used to illustrate the warmth of courteous living. Unfortunately, the fact that the government had to put posters up telling other people to be courteous is quite sad, and it shows that the target audience did not have critical thinking skills to treat others nicely.
I like this series of posters and it resonates with me because it is an illustrative poster. The theme of the festival is “Something to Offend Everyone” and Brooklyn Film Festival takes pride in never censoring any works. The theme message is this, “If we’re not open to listening to and understanding what other people have to say, we’ll never be able to learn from each other and grow as individuals”. This is exactly what critical thinking is about and apart from having an interesting concept, the illustration evokes feelings due to the different textures and bright colours, contrasting against the dark coloured character.
This is an example of something I would like to do in the future, whether it is for an illustration competition or for work. We are doing something like this for Studio class as well, so I just need to practise and gain more experience to be the designer I would like to be.

Maybe he's right, I just want things I cannot have...
I'm fucked, I fucked up. Perché non sono abbastanza...
How do we link what we are currently learning to how it can be applied in society? This is something I had not really given much thought about in great detail, as I had been focusing mostly on getting work done but not what lies beyond doing so, which is equally important. In this week's lesson, we went through multiple examples of designers whose work contributes to the betterment of society. This means being aware of social issues to practise being socially engaged, just like what we went through in Week 1.
My ideas of filming the perspectives of the characters were included, and I edited the videos together. If we had more time, I would have added a tagline at the end to confirm that the video was about the social issue of stalking.
I think that it is important to keep in mind and educate myself on social issues going on outside while I do my work so that I know how to accurately help them. “Design must reflect the practical and aesthetic in business but above all, good design must primarily serve people” is a quote by Thomas J. Watson. This is something I will always keep in mind from now on.
This week’s lesson has once again reminded me that I need to always look beyond my work, know who I am doing it for, and how to accurately present my work in a way that meets the needs of the target audience, so that I can effectively communicate impactful or meaningful designs.
