Kino Lorber Launching ‘Kino Cult’ as Packaged-Media Label
Home entertainment distributor Kino Lorber is launching its Kino Cult genre brand as a packaged-media imprint focusing on collector-oriented Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD releases.
The Kino Cult imprint will debut as its own label in October 2023 with special Blu-ray editions of Jess Franco’s erotic horror masterpiece Lorna … the Exorcist (1974, featuring Lina Romay), as well as 4K restorations of Alien Outlaw (1985) and The Dark Power (1985), two video rental favorites from North Carolina indie Phil Smoot.
Tumblr media
Kino Cult’s premiere 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release will be a deluxe edition of Clive Barker’s Underworld (1985), directed by George Pavlou, and featuring Denholm Elliott and Ingrid Pitt. Upcoming 4K releases for 2024 include the exploitation classic Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS (1975) and its sequels, Ilsa: Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks (1976), Ilsa the Tigress of Siberia (1977), and Ilsa, the Wicked Woman (1977).
Tumblr media
While focusing mainly on horror and science fiction, Kino Cult will continue to embrace its trademark brand of “unapologetically weird” with such diverse genres as European erotica, grindhouse classics, and cinematic rediscoveries that defy categorization.
“Some of the most exciting rediscoveries are happening in the realm of cult cinema,” said Kino Cult curators Frank Tarzi and Bret Wood. “These strange and twisted movies are so unique that we feel they deserve their own imprint within the Kino Lorber family of labels.”
Kino Cult will expand its partnership with legendary cult label Something Weird, with collector’s edition releases to be announced soon.
Additional Kino Cult releases will be announced monthly.

Just a heads up that when Kino Lorber’s 4K release of the 1974 Murder on the Orient Express, I am absolutely going to be insufferable about it and comparing it to the wonderful HD Paramount remaster that was done in 2018/2022.
I apologize to all my mutuals and advance.

Review: THE CONVERSATION 4K Restoration - A Classic Looks Better Than Ever
Few movies have aged as spectacularly as The Conversation. Built around surveillance in a Post-Watergate America, Francis Ford Coppola tapped into something primal in humanity and the American psyche. The new 4K release is a perfect time to catch it.
Few movies have aged as spectacularly as The Conversation. Built around surveillance in a Post-Watergate America, Francis Ford Coppola tapped into something primal in humanity and the American psyche. Not only are we scared of being heard in our private moments, but we’re terrified within these moments of vulnerability. With a new 4K restoration heading into select theaters to celebrate its 50th…

Screening the film It's raining on Santiago (1975) of Chilean filmmaker Helvio Soto.
Tumblr media
To commemorate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, Cineteca Nacional de Chile will present a special function this Thursday, October 26th at 19:00 hours, screening the film It's raining on Santiago (1975) of Chilean filmmaker Helvio Soto.
It's raining on Santiago was the first feature film telling the coup d'état of 1973, depicting torture, kidnapping and disappearances that took place in the early days of the dictatorship. The movie couldn't be premiered in Chile because it was forbidden by the military regime.
Tumblr media
The film was shot in 1975 in France and Bulgaria, and participated Astor Piazzolla, who wrote the original score, and French actors Jean-Louis Trintignant and Annie Girardot.
The print that will be screened is preserved in the National Film Archive of Czech Republic, who gave us a 4K digital copy. To Cineteca Nacional de Chile this function marks the beginning of the work of recovering and repatriating the films of Chilean filmmaker Helvio Soto, which are mainly in France, country where he settled when he was exiled by the military dictatorship.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) 🍕🍕
Director’s cut / 4K restoration
If you have no Star Trek context or interest to approach the universe this movie is impossible to sit through without literally hating your life.
Regardless, even for Star Trek fans, it’s undoubtedly a slugfest with low cinematic value, essentially a long episode reprise of the tv shows mainly of historical relevance.
The restoration looks good on the big screen though 🙌

“My journey has been very free. I’ve been able to work in different parts of the world and on projects that don’t necessarily obey a typical journey of a person that wants to be famous or work in film. I want young actors to know you don’t have to follow a set line to have a career. Sometimes the line is drawn for actors from the English language. But in my case I can reinvent myself all the time.” — Gael García Bernal (Total Film, 07/2021)

The Beyond: The Composer’s Cut Screening Dates
Experience Lucio Fulci's masterpiece of horror THE BEYOND, restored in 4K with a new music score from original composer Fabio Frizzi! Now touring select theaters across North America!
Grindhouse Releasing has teamed with legendary composer Fabio Frizzi to present a brand-new version of THE BEYOND, director Lucio Fulci’s 1981 horror masterpiece starring Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck and Cinzia Monreale.
Premiering this fall in theatrical release from Grindhouse, THE BEYOND: THE COMPOSER’S CUT features Fabio Frizzi’s new score for THE BEYOND with a brand-new 4K presentation of THE BEYOND newly scanned from the original camera negatives.
“Fulci fans will definitely want to see this on the big screen for the maximum impact,” said Grindhouse Releasing co-founder Bob Murawski. “It’s the best the movie has ever looked and a whole new experience in terror with Fabio’s brilliant new score!”
After a years-long multidimensional odyssey as the editor of Sam Raimi’s DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, Murawski is now finishing 4K UHD HDR disc editions of THE BEYOND and Ruggero Deodato’s CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST.
Murawski also confirmed work is close to complete on two sought-after ’70s thrillers coming soon to Blu-ray from Grindhouse: HOLLYWOOD 90028, screening next month at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema, and William Grefe’s IMPULSE, starring William Shatner.
Grindhouse will also be releasing Blu-ray editions of two Texas indies: S.F. Brownrigg’s SCUM OF THE EARTH and Palmer Rockey’s magnum opus LOVE IS DEEP INSIDE.
Grindhouse Releasing’s latest hit is Peter S. Traynor’s psycho thriller DEATH GAME, starring Seymour Cassel, Sondra Locke and Colleen Camp. DEATH GAME screens next at the 2022 L’Etrange Film Festival in Paris and is now available on Blu-ray at GrindhouseReleasing.com.
