Kino Lorber Launching ‘Kino Cult’ as Packaged-Media Label

Home entertainment distributor Kino Lorber is launching its Kino Cult genre brand as a packaged-media imprint focusing on collector-oriented Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD releases.

The Kino Cult imprint will debut as its own label in October 2023 with special Blu-ray editions of Jess Franco’s erotic horror masterpiece Lorna … the Exorcist (1974, featuring Lina Romay), as well as 4K restorations of Alien Outlaw (1985) and The Dark Power (1985), two video rental favorites from North Carolina indie Phil Smoot.

Kino Cult’s premiere 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release will be a deluxe edition of Clive Barker’s Underworld (1985), directed by George Pavlou, and featuring Denholm Elliott and Ingrid Pitt. Upcoming 4K releases for 2024 include the exploitation classic Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS (1975) and its sequels, Ilsa: Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks (1976), Ilsa the Tigress of Siberia (1977), and Ilsa, the Wicked Woman (1977).

While focusing mainly on horror and science fiction, Kino Cult will continue to embrace its trademark brand of “unapologetically weird” with such diverse genres as European erotica, grindhouse classics, and cinematic rediscoveries that defy categorization.

“Some of the most exciting rediscoveries are happening in the realm of cult cinema,” said Kino Cult curators Frank Tarzi and Bret Wood. “These strange and twisted movies are so unique that we feel they deserve their own imprint within the Kino Lorber family of labels.”

Kino Cult will expand its partnership with legendary cult label Something Weird, with collector’s edition releases to be announced soon.

Additional Kino Cult releases will be announced monthly.

Alien Outlaw will be released on Blu-ray on October 24 via Kino Lorber. Featuring reversible artwork, the 1985 sci-fi western film is spine #2 in the new Kino Cult line.

Phil Smoot (The Dark Power) writes and directs. Lash La Rue, Kari Anderson, Stephen Wineguard, Paul Holman, and Sunset Carson star.

Priest Kino can be a walking Blasphemy.

But also too charismatic and honest.

Could be a cult leader.

Nothing says he is or isn't one.

Spreads the gospel as if he was there.

He acts like he was Jesus' bestie.

Calls him J. Christ.

Blames you for bullying and killing him even though he was such a cool guy.

More like guilt trips you about it.

Projects too much on the guy whose father abandoned and was bullied by locals to the breaking point (death) when he only wanted to make friends.

Now he's vengeful on his behalf.

But he also found plot holes in the narrative and will tell everyone about it.

If he can confuse you about your own beliefs, even better.

He seems to be in a grey area with both sides.

In his words, he's friends with both.

But he might as well be working and betraying both at the same time. No one knows.

He'd tell you that God is just angry and Satan has fun hobbies.

He offers you tips and tricks on how to go to Heaven if you join his cu— church.

Otherwise, you can have fun with the other guy. He knows what he's doing, Kino affirms.

Sometimes he sounds like he's offering you a great deal.

"If you join me you'll have one sin a month free of charge. I won't tell any of the two! It'd be our secret. And! The least you sin, the more sins you'll have to spend!"

Despite being on Jesus' side, it's not clear where he wants you to go to.

Although if misery falls upon you, it was most likely his doing. He judges your sins first and foremost.

If you sin, you're disgusting and you deserve it.

If your sin isn't too bad, you're just not sinning right.

All in all, Kino just uses the excuse that the Bible is full of contradictions to do what he wants.

"You think asking for forgiveness will redeem you? Ha! If only it was that easy... We wouldn't need jails, or Heaven, or Hell. How about you stop using your words and start acting like you're really sorry?"

I played Needy Streamer Overload, which was a lot of fun, with an asterisk. NSO is a Lifesim Management game for a batshit up-and-coming streamer, where you as her 'boyfriend' allocate her time between streaming, resting, and content inspiration/development to hit 1 million followers. The writing is very on point for actual streams culture;the topics and comments and all that are very true-to-life, while its zany edgecore presentation is hilarious. And the UI is full kino:

Vibes - and also, spoilers, not just a cutesy aesthetic, as the player is not in fact a real person so the digital viewport is ludonarratively cohesive, +1 point.

However, it also pissed me off for specific me reasons!

So, these games tend to go into two buckets. One is the engine builder - managing the lifesim is both involved and The Point of the game. You work hard to optimize and achieve the goal. The second is narrative device - the lifesim elements are more about narrative choice than challenge, and either can't be failed or are trivially cleared. You approach playing those 2 game types differently.

NSO presents itself like the former - its mechanics are pretty involved. Managing Followers, Stress, Affection, & Mental Darkness, all on a clock, while unlocking ~10 different streaming content topic progression trees, its a lot to track. Not saying its crazy hard or anything, but its what you spend your time doing. You will be asking yourself questions like "yes I could have sex with her for the third time this week to lower stress and boost affection so I can burn that affect buildup on the Sexy Stream lvl 2 to sync my highest topic bonus with my streaming streak bonus before I need to end it for a rest cycle, but I can only play that card so many times, is day 13 too early?". That is fun, and where your focus lies. On my first playthrough I tried to hit the 1 million target, barely succeeded, but burned out Ame's stats so much I got a short, pretty-much-failed ending.

So on my second playthrough I tinkered around and stumbled on a soft infinity engine, where I could push Ame's stress to the limit in the opening days to get her follower count to the point where she would unlock "follower milestone celebration" streams that I could bank, that did not increase stress but would count towards a streaming-every-day streak bonus, and never take a rest day to get that bonus insanely high. I got several million followers with low stress, low darkness, I thought I did a good job.

And I got a short, pretty-much-failed ending.

Turns out this game has 30 endings, and the lions share of the long, involved ones are from you completely fucking up. You will get a way more interesting ending if you make Ame-chan overdose on LSD and she trips her way into breaking though the illusion of the internet. You want to raise her darkness high as hell for half of them. You can found a cult, you can induce all sorts of violence against her or others, whatever you want. But the game didn't tell me!!

It instead presented me with a solid optimization puzzle, which I spent like 10 hours doing. I shouldn't have bothered! It doesn't really tell this partially for surprise, but if we are being honest its because they expect you to google it, and they expect you to watch streamers unlock 25 of them after you do 5. Which is how modern games are made, but personally I don't love relying on that. I do think games are at their best when they self-teach a player the right way to engage with it.

But I respect that some people would see the discarded scraps of a tryhard faildaughter that is Ame-chan and immediately push her into doing conspiracy theory streams while smoking weed. I am just not someone you can plunk an engine in front of and expect me not to try to tinker with it. This is 50% on me.

This wonderful cult favorite film is directed by Stephen Norrington (Blade, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen). The cast includes Brad Dourif, Ely Pouget, William Hootkins. Tidying up your blazer while striding through the hospital’s corridor, the nurses greeted and welcomed you in the facility. You smiled and nod, knowing already who you’d be heading to. His door was left unlocked, like usual. That’s how he’s always been long before he lived here. Knocking on the door, you called his name gently as you didn’t want to startle him. He might be taking a nap, or lost in his own thoughts.

“My love, my life, are you in there awake or a nap is what you are indulging right now ?” 

“I am awake as a deer on the shiny day. Come in, my loved soul.”

You gently opened the door, smiling as you saw him leaning on the window edge. White hospital outer with matching set of clothes, he smirked as he cocked his head.

“My, you are as gorgeous as usual without fail. " He walked away from the window, hand reaching to caress your cheek.

"And you are still looking handsome day and night. But perhaps you just need a little bath I suppose." You pointed at the stain on his shirt. It was faint, and luckily this man always put his hygiene on his concern. Although perhaps he was a messy eater today.

"I'd love to, but it would be a waste of water if you take a bath right now and only get dirty the next few minutes" He held your chin, aiming your gaze upon him. How hypnotizing those icy blue eyes, like looking through a frozen sea in the clear blue sky.

"You do realize I just arrived, right?"

"And you do realize as well that i can be impatient as well." He pulled you in, closer and closer, lips finally meeting each other, the sound of two folks kissing each other passionately that he grasped onto your shoulder like he was about to fall. You closed the door behind you with your feet, moving along with him as he devoured your mouth whole. Exploring every inch inside, his tongue felt like a new explorer in a cave. First, take a killer film title and an equally killer poster. Then grab a bizarre tale that includes long (yet exciting) car chases, vampires (sort of), Frankenstein (sort of), Nazis (sort of), super Vulcan nerve pinches (sort of), and a bubbling vat of acid. Then cast it with three iconic horror actors and what do you get? Scream and Scream Again from Amicus, directed by Gordon Hessler, and featuring Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing. Even if all three are never in the same scene, the results are oddly compelling, yet … goofy and frustrating. Despite the negatives, this film has grown a cult following. What might the Grue Crew make of it?

The question you were asked about what a hypothetical battle between Carnelian and the Makai kings would be like got me thinking.

I imagine it could go like this:

Karl and Burai would be in charge of attacking with magic, obviously they both have great knowledge in very, very ancient and dangerous black magic 💀. I like to imagine that the Wolf clan king and Ajax are much better at melee combat, (plus I have a headcanon about how the Wolf clan members are the strongest demons physically).

Carnelian (as far as I know), can use high level magic and is a vampire over five hundred years old, so he's pretty smart and strong, plus he has a cult at his disposal that do whatever he orders them to do, (for example, in the manga his cult members are in charge of kidnapping demons from other clans, so they must also be strong or be demons themselves as well). This battle of kings would also have to be joined by Carla, as everything seems to point to Carnelian being the creator of the endzeit, so Carla especially has every reason to kill Carnelian, even if that means he has to join his enemies Karlheinz and Burai in the battle...

Meanwhile, Alexander, Shuu, Eberto and Alrick would be facing Carnelian's sons, which are in fact chimeras, since Carnelian experimented on them. Based on my knowledge of the Carnelian Blood characters, here the fight would be close but I think the intellect of both Shuu and Alrick could give them a good edge in the battle. Even Lilly could be there as backup 🗡️.

The rest of the Sakamaki brothers, the Mukami brothers, Shin and Kino (along with the Ghouls), could be fighting Carnelian's elite soldiers - "The Crimson Guard" (which by the way, these characters are canon).

Meanwhile Callista and Yui/MC are in a hostage situation, Calli because she is the future wife of the next Vampire King, and Yui because she is "Eve" and that already makes her too special and important.

I hope this isn't too weird, I just wanted to add my thoughts!

Honestly, the best ideas and story progressions on my blog come from others helping me along the way. Working out ideas and flushing them out. So, please, I love talking about these kind of things and building a bigger world.

You are 100% on how the kings operate. I think that Karl and Burai are more of the magical and tactical. While Gottfried and Ajax are the muscle tanks. I totally agree with your head cannon that the wolves would be the strongest physically - they, to me, are the more natural fighters - they give into their instincts more.

I do recall that Carnelian was the one who created the endzeit - that does give Carla cause to join in with the other Lords, as a Lord in his own right. Perhaps this would also be a turning point for him - to take up that mantle.

I did not know they were Chimeras!!! What! I just thought they were demon boys. See, I don't know anything. This keeps getting deeper and deeper. If that is the case, Shu, Reiji, Alexander and Alrick might have to put their minds together while the other siblings fight. @the-sloth-woman I can totally see Lilly joining the fight in Alrick's stead. Having to deal with a cult and an army - both of which I am just learning about - they are going to need all the smarties. The other boys and even Meteo and Evangeline would be leading the fights with those - no question.

Yui would for sure be a hostage, but I don't think Callista would. Callista isn't the type to go down easy, so if she was taken - it was because she was with Yui. If she was with Yui, and captured she would be plotting their escape. I can see her and Yui making it out and running into the boys like "We're here to save you" and Calli just being like "Well you took too long."

Call Me By Your Name

Call Me by Your Name made a star out of Timothée Chalamet six — yes, that's right, you read that correctly, six! — years ago this past weekend.
