Film Scene Recreation - The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I worked predominantly on recording the sound in the film - swinging boom and setting up the MixPre 3. It was a difficult transition to go from recording sound on single shot films to multiple shots: having to adjust the gain to compensate for changing the postion of the boom in between cuts in order to get consistent levels was really difficult. It made me realise that rehearsing the boom placement and choreographing my placement and gain levels before shooting was really a nessecity. Although the quality of most of the audio is acceptable in each shot individually, the overall inconsistency in the final project I find to be distracting and undermines the quality of the shots themselves.

I also stepped in as assistant/director of photography on the first day of shooting while we tried to match the exact framing and lighting of each shot. Without having the exact same set the actors in the original film used, it was difficult to establish the correct level of depth in the shot, especially given that we were shooting at night. Working with the "natural" street lamp was actually not a horrible experience as the natural colour it gave off was a great match to the scene and provided that essential back-lit glow that looks great.

Overall, although I am not quite as satisfied with my particular contributions on the film, I think the other people in my group worked well in their roles and the final scene is a clear recreation of the original.
