Mac doesn’t really know why he thought about it, or even how it popped into his head, but it did. Out of everything that’s distinctly Not Human about Jack, birthdays were not something that Mac ever thought he’d have to worry about.

And he still doesn’t, not really. But he’s curious enough about it that he can’t help himself. 

So one night, bad leg stretched out on the couch while one of his hands massages his thigh, Mac asks, “Do you have a birthday?” Mac probably should’ve realized something was off sooner, but given his distaste for his own birthday, the whole celebration thing had just slipped his mind for the past half a dozen years.

“No,” Jack easily replies, as if he was expecting the question.

“What would you have said if I asked you this before I figured out… y’know. You.”

“Picked a random day and stuck with it. Jack Dalton—the actual dude—has a birthday. Woulda just used his.”

“Ah.” Mac swallows. Admittedly, he’s still warming up to the fact that Jack has been parading around in some dead guy’s body.

“Don’t really matter now though, does it?”

Mac nods a few times, glancing between his leg and Jack before settling on the latter. “Do you… want a birthday? To like… celebrate?”

“What’s this about?”

“Nothing. Honestly, Jack, nothing,” Mac adds, rolling his eyes at his partner’s face. “I was just- I don’t know. I know you like being human Or at least human-adjacent. I figured a birthday part might be something that you’re into.”

This time, Jack grins. “I didn’t say ‘no’ to it.”
