Western Illinois, Year 28, 2034-2035

The Leathernecks return four starters from last year’s Elite Eight team in our College Hoops 2K8 sim.

Welcome back to our simulated dynasty with the Western Illinois Leathernecks in College Hoops 2K8. You can find a full explanation of this project + spoiler-free links to previous seasons here. Check out the introduction to this series from early April for full context. As a reminder, we simulate every game in this series and only control the recruiting and coaching strategies.

Before we pick up with the Leathernecks at the start of Year 28, here’s a recap of everything that happened last season:

The Leathernecks entered Year 27 coming off back-to-back national championships for the first time in program history. While completing the three-peat was the goal, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy after all five starters were selected in the first round of the NBA draft from last year’s team.

We opened the year with a good-not-great performance in non-conference play highlighted by an upset of No. 25 Villanova. We then entered Summit League play looking to continue our undefeated streak in conference, but lost two games, falling to Southern Utah and IUPUI respectively. We then sweated out a couple conference tournament games but ended up punching our automatic berth with a win in the championship game. We were given a No. 13 seed entering March Madness.

We upset Baylor in round one, beat USC in round two, and defeated Notre Dame in the Sweet 16. Our shocking tournament run ended against George Washington, who beat us and went on to win the national championship.

We recruited for four scholarships and landed four players. The class ranked No. 16 in the country.

Here’s a first look at the roster for Year 28:

Last season’s inspired run to the Elite Eight has me thinking this year’s team deserves to have championship aspirations. We only lost one player, but it was big one: true junior shooting guard Neil Modrovich — one of the great outside shooters in program history — left for the NBA as a projected lottery pick. His co-star last year, Nic Cummings, was projected as a first rounder but decided to return for his senior season.

Let’s meet the starting lineup:

PG Duncan Martinez, 86 overall, redshirt sophomore: The only new starter in our lineup this year, Martinez is a 6’2 guard who is tied for the best three-point shooter on the team with an 87 rating. He’s more of a scoring guard than the PGs we’ve had in the past. We want to see if he’s able to take care of the ball and hold up defensively, but it’s going to be so nice to have another knockdown shooting threat on the perimeter. Former No. 69 overall recruit from Chicago with C+ potential.

SG Goran Kent, 91 overall, redshirt senior: Kent moves from point guard to shooting guard to accomodate Martinez. He has the size for the position at 6’6 and also profiles as a solid perimeter defender. He struggles to shoot the ball from deep, entering the year with a 73 rating from three-point range. Kent earned plenty of criticism from the fanbase last year for finishing with eight turnovers in our Elite Eight loss to GW (worth noting he also had 21 points in the first half), so hopefully he can redeem himself. Projected second round pick from Rochester, MN, former No. 90 overall recruit with C potential.

SF Nic Cummings, 95 overall, redshirt senior: Cummings’ decision to return for his senior year gives a chance to win it all this season. We’ve never had a player finish above 96 overall, so it’s possible Cummings ends this season as the highest-rated player in program history. He’s a massive wing at 6’8, 257 pounds who is known for his high-flying dunking ability. His three-point shot has never been his strength, but he’s improved to respectable (77 rating) entering his final year of college ball. Projected top pick, former No. 110 overall recruit from San Jose.

PF C.J. Cesar, 89 overall, redshirt junior: Cesar is a converted center who helps us fortify the paint on both ends. The 6’11 big man is our best rebounder, tied for our best shot blocker, and is a dependable inside finisher. He doesn’t provide the shooting we’d ideally like at the four, but his size + tenaciousness inside provides an element most of our opponents can’t match. Projected first round pick, former No. 9 center recruit from Cincinnati with B- potential.

C Darron Coulter, 88 overall, redshirt junior: Coulter is the biggest player we’ve ever had standing 7’3. He actually has a surprisingly good face-up jumper with good range, but he’s not a super dynamic athlete. Will that limit him as a rim protector and rebounder? One thing Coulter does have going for him: a team best defensive awareness rating in the low 90s. Projected first round pick, former No. 7 center recruit from Charlotte with C potential.

We’re going to play three guys off the bench all about equal minutes. True sophomore center Elvin King looks like a total stud: a 7’1 big man who scores effortlessly and gives us the athleticism we need on defense. Redshirt sophomore wing Warren Schultz gives us great size (6’9) and is tied with Martinez for the best three-point shooter on the team. We also have 6’4 true sophomore shooting guard Sammy Yan, who is the highest-rated recruit in program history (No. 10 overall) and projects as an elite finisher down the road.

We also welcome four new freshmen to the team, all of whom will redshirt. They are:

PG Rashaun Diggs, 75 overall, C- potential: We threw out Hail Mary offer to Diggs on the last week of the recruiting period and he ends up being tied for our highest rated freshman. He’s super tiny (5’10, 159 pounds), he’s a great three-point shooter, and he’s underdeveloped as a passer and ball handler at the moment. Former No. 120 overall recruit out of XXXXX

PF Mitch Hunter, 75 overall, C+ potential: Hunter was only rated as the No. 201 overall recruit in his class, but we liked his profile. He’s already grown an inch to 6’9 and should be a really solid five-year power forward for us. Native of XXXX.

C Thom Towe, 74 overall, B+ potential. Towe was the No. 5 overall center recruit this year and should eventually continue our tradition of outstanding big men. He’s already grown an inch to 6’10 and projects as an old school big man.

SG Dave French, 70 overall, B potential. French is a five-star international recruit from New Zealand. A natural 6’3 point guard, he went up two points on his overall rating when we switched him to shooting guard. Impressive ball handler and passer with a promising shooting projection. We’re hoping he adds a couple inches of height during his time in school.

Recruiting

We have three scholarships to recruit for this season. We’re thinking Diggs might be best served as a sixth man long-term, so we’re targeting two big wings (as well as a center) on the trail. After scanning the available prospects, we decide to offer the following players:

SG Stephan Ibekwe out of Oak Park, IL, No. 36 overall recruit

SF R. Guerrero out of Milwaukee, No. 93 overall recruit

C Esa Griffin out of Florissant, MO, No. 48 overall recruit and No. 3 center

We also have a recruit to create for the winner of our bracket contest, and it’s a highly anticipated character: 7-foot center Bryant ‘Big Country’ Reeves Jr. As always, we don’t go after created recruits, but will follow their careers.

We enter the season rated as a 97 overall but unranked in the polls.

Regular season

Our schedule this year is all over the map. We scheduled two games vs. in-state teams (Illinois State and Southern Illinois), two early season tournaments (the NIT Tip-Off Classic and Golden Bear Classic), a couple true road games against elite programs (@ Kentucky and @ Villanova), and then put Wichita State, @ Hawaii, Marquette, and Arizona State on there too.

Let’s go!

Win vs. Illinois State: Cummings with 24 points, Coulter with 16 points, Kent with 10 points, nine assists, and six rebounds.

Win vs. *Missouri: Cummings with 15 points to lead the way. Elvin King had 13 points and six rebounds. Meanwhile Kent is turning into the guard version Bracy as a low-scoring jack of all trades, finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds, eight assists.

Win vs. *Rice: 21 points for Cummings, Coulter finishes with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five stocks. Elvin King adds 15 points off the bench.

Win vs. Wichita State: Six of our eight players finished in double figures, led by Duncan Martinez’s 19 points.

Win vs. Hawaii: Front court doing work: Coulter with 21 points, Cesar with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Win vs. *Ohio State: Win by three! C.J. Cesar led the way with 17 points and six rebounds. Kent: 10 points and seven assists.

Win vs. *West Virginia: Win by four! Cesar led the way with 32 points. Only fellow centers Coulter and King (12 points each) also finished in double figures.

We’re 7-0! Unfortunately it wouldn’t last for long: we dropped our next game against Marquette (a heartbreaking three-point loss). We then rebounded with a win over a tough Southern Illinois team, lost to Arizona State, beat Kentucky, and lost to Villanova.

Now it’s time for Summit League season

We entered last season with about a seven-year winning streak in the Summit League only to lose two conference games for the first time since my opening years at Western.

Can we get back to running the table in the Summit?

Nope. A seven-point loss to South Dakota State. Is the Summit League getting better or are we getting worse? Dropping a conference game was more understandable last year when we were replacing all five starters, but this season we have four starters back from an Elite Eight team. I didn’t expect this. It won’t matter as long as we can take care of business in the Summit League tournament, though.

Before we get there, let’s take a look at the end-of-season stats:

Coutler absolutely did work during Summit League season. I guess that’s what happens when you’re 7’3. I’m also impressed with Cummings’ scoring ability (15.5 points per game), and the boost King gave us off the bench (11.9 points per game). This team doesn’t have quite as much shooting as some of our other squads considering we start two traditional bigs in the front court, but Cummings, Martinez, and Schultz off the bench all proved to be snipers.

I’m already thinking about which lineup combination will be best come tournament time, but we have to get there first. Let’s go punch that automatic bid.

Summit League tournament

First game is against Oakland.

Win, 92-62. 19 points for Cesar, 17 points for Cummings, 14 points for King off the pine. Next up is Fort Wayne.

Win, 85-50. Martinez was incredible, finishing with 20 points and eight assists on 8-of-13 shooting. Coulter added 17 points in the win. Now we face Southern Utah in the title game.

Win, 92-63! Blowout, baby. We’re going to the tournament once again. Our front court absolutely did work in that: 30 points for Coutler, 22 points for Cesar, 20 points for Cummings.

Let’s keep that energy going into March. We enter the NCAA tournament at 31-4 on the season.

2035 NCAA tournament

We’re a No. 7 seed, facing No. 10 Michigan. We’re rated as a 100 overall entering the tournament. Michigan is rated as a 91 overall.

Let’s take one final look at our roster before we head into the tournament.

Nic Cummings is now officially the highest rated player in program history. We have had several players who ended their careers rated as a 96 overall, but we’ve never had a player who reached 97 overall. If we’re going to embark on a deep tournament run, Cummings needs to be our biggest star.

We only have an eight man rotation this year, but all eight guys can play. Everyone is rated as an 86 overall or higher, with four of our starters rated in the 90s. We are lowkey loaded. The goal entering the tournament is hang banner No. 7. Anything less will be a disappointment.

First, we need to knock off Michigan. As always, we’re watching a simulated game between the computers. I’m not controlling Western Illinois. Let’s go!

Win, 97-67. Just a total beatdown from start to finish.

Cummings was excellent, finishing with 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting from three. Hopefully that’s a harbinger of things to come. King was also great, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. He looks like our best big man right now. I’m also really enjoying the work Cesar is doing in the paint (14 points, 10 rebounds). He’s the tone setter for this team as another physical presence inside.

Next up we face No. 2 seed Xavier.

No. 7 Western Illinois vs. No. 2 Xavier, round of 32, 2035 NCAA tournament

This is going to be a battle. Xavier is a perennial powerhouse in this sim, and they have what looks like one of their best teams ever.

Both teams enter the game rated as a 100 overall, but Xavier is the rare team with perfect ratings in every category but shooting. While we’re merely a 97 in offense and a 98 in defense, the Musketeers have 100 ratings down the board.

Major nerves for this one. It could easily be our toughest game for the rest of the tournament, and it comes in the second round. Losing here would feel like a disaster. Winning would have me dreaming of another national title.

Win. 108-101! Oh my, what a game.

Xavier had us sweating. It was a one-point game with six minutes left when I made some manual subs and found a lineup I think we can rock with the rest of this tournament run: Martinez at point guard, Cummings at the two, Schultz at the three, Cesar at the four, and King at center. That lineup shutdown any hope of a Xavier comeback and pushed us into the Sweet 16.

A couple other things I liked:

GORAN KENT getting hot from deep. Kent has been maligned throughout his ‘Necks career, but he’s one of our highest rated players and needs to come through for us in this tournament run. Kent’s biggest shortcoming is that he’s a below average three-point shooter, but he knocked down four big triples in this one. I’m not sure we win this game if he doesn’t get hot from deep.

Coulter and King were both so good, combining for 32 points and seven blocks. Just huge, considering that Cesar had a rare off-night.

Another superstar performance from Nic Cummings: 25 points, six assists, and three steals on 8-of-11 shooting, including this big dunk:

That sets up a Sweet 16 matchup with Duke.

Western Illinois vs. Duke, Sweet 16, 2035 NCAA tournament

Duke has fallen off a little bit since Coach K retired, but they’re still a solid program. The Blue Devils enter the Sweet 16 rated as a 95 overall.

After a thrilling win over Xavier, we can’t afford a letdown. Let’s go!

Win, 102-80. Second half team!

Duke was giving us the business throughout the first 20 minutes, taking a three-point lead into the halftime break. We came out on fire in the second half and quickly turned the game into a blowout in our favor.

Cummings is going full Wilky Henry/Jitim Dupree at this point as a senior star who’s having a special March. He popped off for a career-high 38 points powered by 7-of-13 shooting from three-point range. King was also fantastic off the bench once again, finishing with 17 points, nine assists, and five blocks. He’s only a true sophomore, but as the former No. 2 recruit at his position, I think it’s fair to start wondering if he’s one of the best pure talents we’ve ever had at center.

We’re back in the Elite Eight, where we’ll face Indiana.

Western Illinois vs. Indiana, Elite Eight, 2035 NCAA tournament

The Hoosiers have reached the Elite Eight as a No. 5 seed. They’re led by sophomore small forward Bud Richards Jr., who was created by a former bracket contest winner as the son of our first ever recruit at WIU. Indiana enters the game rated as a 98 overall.

We lost in the Elite Eight last year, and can’t let it happen again. Let’s go!

Win, 117-74! An absolutely dominant performance from start to finish puts us back in the Final Four.

This game was never close. As Bud Jr. battled foul trouble, Cummings got hot on the wing and stockpiled points at all three levels. He finished with 35 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win, and also had several nasty dunks:

King also put together another star performance, finishing with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four blocks on 9-of-13 shooting. He’s absolutely in our closing lineup if we find ourselves in a tight Final Four game.

Our opponent in the national semifinal will be Ole Miss.

Western Illinois vs. Ole Miss, Final Four, 2035 NCA tournament

The Rebels are a No. 1 seed and enter the game rated as a 98 overall. Both teams already know Clemson is waiting in the national championship game.

We’re two wins away from our seventh national title. Let’s go!

Win, 103-75.

This game is barely worthy of a recap: we were up by 22 points at halftime, and the game never got any closer. Goran Kent was terrific and might have rewritten his legacy in real time. The 6’6 senior guard finished with 23 points and six assists to help pace the blowout. He did all of his damage in the first half, and he was hitting from everywhere:

To just blow out a No. 1 seed in the Final Four like that is damn impressive. This team is becoming an all-timer before our eyes.

After we narrowly won a thriller in the round of 32 vs. Xavier, we haven’t really been tested since. Clemons has one last shot to stop this dynasty from rolling forward.

Western Illinois vs. Clemson, national title game, 2035 NCAA tournament

No one expected Clemson to be here. The Tigers enter the national title game as a No. 9 seed, using a small ball attack based on speed and shooting to fuel the run. Clemson doesn’t have a traditional big man on the roster, but this is still a dangerous team. The Tigers are rated as a 99 overall.

Western Illinois has won six national titles through our first 27 seasons. We’re one win away from No. 7. Let’s go!

Win, 88-80! Western Illinois are national champions of the 2035 NCAA tournament!

Wow, Clemson played us tough. It was only a two-point game with just over 7 minutes left when he went on a run to secure the win. That started with this pretty up-and-under from C.J. Cesar, who might have been the best player on the floor in this one:

Cesar and King each scored 17 points to lead us in scoring in this one. I thought King might be the rare MOP to come off the bench, but instead Cummings won the award. He was absolutely deserving.

This team won the title by dominating near the basket. Coulter is the tallest player we’ve ever had at 7’3, Cesar was able to overpower opposing fours at both ends with his strength, and King looks like a future NBA stud. Cummings also absolutely lived up to the billing as the highest rated player in program history at 97 overall. He was the driving force behind so many of our tournament runs, and also gave us more highlight dunks than anyone we’ve ever had before. Our guards did enough not to mess it up, which is actually quite the compliment. Kent was being compared to the worst players in program history, but he proved himself in this run. Martinez should still have a bright future, and the same can be said for Schultz and Yan off the bench.

The goal for this series to win end our career with the most national championships in college basketball history. Only John Wooden, with 10 titles, is standing between us and history. The game forces mandatory retirement after Year 40. There’s more work to be done.

That’s now three national titles in four years. Kent and Cummings are the only players graduating. Cesar and Coulter are both projected first round picks as juniors, so we’ll see what they do. We also have three scholarships still to recruit for. Let’s go to the offseason.

Offseason

Reader Tim wins the bracket contest. He’s creating Deke Van Jr. ahead of next season. Can’t wait.

Cesar and Coulter both decide to come back! Cummings gets drafted (he was a projected top pick), and Kent goes undrafted.

We lose an assistant coach and replace with a coach who is a B+ in teaching. That means our player development could take a small hit.

We turn down every job offer once again. Leathernecks 4 Life.

Recruiting

We enter the spring recruiting period with three available scholarships and a ways to go on the players we’re chasing. We land our first recruit a couple weeks into the period when No. 9 center Vinnie Harmon commits to the ‘Necks.

Two weeks later, we land our next target: 6’5 small forward Spanky Fanning. Yes, that’s his real name. Fanning is rated as the No. 92 overall prospect in the country.

We were recruiting five-star international shooting guard Josh Samuel out of Nigeria with our last scholarship. We got him up to 99 percent interest, but he didn’t commit. That one stings.

Now it’s time to set the schedule for next year. This is what we go with:

Can Patients with Diabetes Detect their own Eating Disorder? The Need for A Better Understanding of Eating Pathology in Diabetes

Abstract

Some authors have suggested that patients with diabetes may hardly detect a co-morbid eating disorders. Unfortunately, not doing so can negatively impact treatment and lead to several unwanted medical complications and psychological problems. Moreover, when a co-morbid eating disorder in a patient with diabetes is not treated, it tends to be recurrent and persistent over time. This study aims to compare patient's own report of eating problems to a diagnosis established with the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire-6. A total of 624 patients with diabetes (type 1 diabetes=137; type 2 diabetes=487) participated to an online survey. The results provide support to the idea that people with diabetes may not adequately evaluate whether they have a co-morbid ED or not. While many participants reported eating problems that did not meet an ED diagnosis, others thought they had no eating problems but their self-reported symptoms met the criteria for an ED diagnosis. People with type 2 diabetes were more likely to report eating problems when there was no ED diagnosis and people with type 1 diabetes were more at risk of denying eating problems when they presented symptoms associated with an ED. These results must be understood in light of the treatment particularities of each type of diabetes: weight management is strongly recommended in people with type 2 diabetes and monitoring of eating is considered essential for those with type 1 diabetes. These patients' difficulty to detect a co-morbid ED should be taken seriously given that it may considerably impair their diabetes management.

Introduction

Recent research suggests that health professionals might find difficult to detect eating disorders (ED) among patients with diabetes (PWD) [1]. Moreover, the clinician's diagnosis impression may differ from the patients' own perception of their eating pathology [2]. In fact, according to Allan (2015), patients with type 1 diabetes’ (T1D) definition and conception of disordered eating behaviours doesn't correspond to the psychiatric nosography suggested in the Diagnostically and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [3]. More precisely, T1D patients who believe they have an eating disorder (ED) do not necessarily present a symptomatology that meets the diagnosis criteria of specific eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder [2]. For those who receive such a diagnosis, bulimia, binge eating disorder and ED not otherwise specified seems to be the most prevalent diagnosis [4]. However, T1D patients themselves do not feel they have bulimia since they do not consider insulin omission as a compensatory behaviour associated to ED. To qualify their eating pathology, they instead tend to refer to a non-classified eating pathology called "diabulimia" [2]. This implies that the detection of ED in T1D patients is problematic and often doesn't match the ED they are diagnosed with. Such detection problem and lack of recognition can lead to an inadequate management and treatment of eating disorders symptoms in PWD. By not seeking and receiving treatment for an ED, they expose themselves to deleterious medical (e.g. bad glycemic control [5], elevated BMI [4,6] higher risk of retinopathy [7], nephropathy [8], neuropathy [6], cardiovascular problem [6], ketoacidosis [6]) and psychological (e.g. higher anxious [9] and depressive [10,11], symptoms, lower self-esteem [12] and self-directiveness [5], more as wishful thinking and self-blame [13], and perfectionism trait [8]) consequences. Furthermore, the impact on diabetic treatment can be long lasting as eating disorders tend to be recurrent and persistent over time [14]. Although up to 40% of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) report eating problems [15], no study to our knowledge has examined the detection of ED among these patients, thus leaving unanswered the question as to whether T2D patients experience the same difficulties as T1D patients to detect and recognize a co-morbid ED. This study aims at assessing ED in patients with both types of diabetes and at comparing their own report of eating problems to a diagnosis established with a valid measure of ED. A total of 624 participants diagnosed with diabetes and aged 17 to 84 years old were recruited to participate in a larger study focusing on the French validation of the Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised Gagnon et al. [16] for a more detailed description of the study sample and procedure). Among the participants, 137 individuals stated that they had a T1D and 487 declared having a T2D. Their self-reported body mass index (BMI= kg/m2) [17] distribution is as follows: 1% of people with T1D were underweight, 41% were of normal weight, 39% were overweight and 19% were obese (Table 1). In people with T2D, none were underweight, 14% were of normal weight, 27% were overweight and 58% were obese. Participants were asked if they considered having eating problems. They also filled in the diagnosis items of the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire-6 (EDEQ-6) [18], which is frequently used to assess the presence and frequency of core eating behaviours involved in the diagnosis of ED (e.g. binge eating, fasting, vomiting, exercising excessively, taking laxatives and diuretics) as per the DSM-5 criteria [3].

As can be seen in Table 1 45.52% of the participants reported that they had eating problems: respectively, 17.52% of people with T1D and 53.39% of people with T2D reported such problems. In contrast, the participants' answers on the EDE-Q6 suggest that 13% of people with T1D and 24% of people with T2D had an ED. More precisely, according to the EDE-Q6, 87% of people with T1D did not have an ED, 10% had BED, 3% had bulimia, and none had anorexia nervosa. In people with T2D it was observed that 76% did not have and ED, 21% had BED, 3% bulimia and 0,2% anorexia nervosa. Among the participants who considered having eating problems, the proportion of those who could not be diagnosed with an ED according to the EDE-Q6 was higher than the one of those who met the criteria for an ED. As found in Table 2, this was found in both types of diabetes. However, T2D patients were more likely than T1D patients to report eating problems that did not encounter ED diagnosis criteria (χ2(1) = 40.291, p <.001). T1D patients who met ED diagnosis criteria were for their part significantly more likely than T2D patients to deny having any eating problem (χ2(1) = 8.297, p < .05). In fact, people with T2D were 5.82 times more likely than people with T1D to think they had eating problems while they did not have an ED diagnosis and T1D patients were 4.23 times more at risk of not reporting eating problems when they did in fact met the diagnosis criteria for ED according to the EDE-Q6.

Conclusion

Results from this study reveal that close to half of the PWD confide in having eating problems. However, for the majority of them, the DSM-5 criteria for an ED are not met. The most frequent ED diagnosis that was found in both T1D and T2D patients is binge-eating disorder, followed by bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa was found in only one T1D participant. Interestingly, many participants believed they had eating problems but a closer evaluation, based on their self-reported symptomatology and the DSM-5 criteria, did not indicate so. This is especially true for T2Dparticipants, with more than a third of them reporting eating problems that did not seem to be severe enough to meet ED diagnosis criteria. On the contrary, a small proportion of the participants did not report any eating problems while their responses to the diagnosis items of the EDE-Q6 suggest they have an ED. This tendency to under-report eating problems was more likely to be observed in T1D then T2D participants. Taken together, these findings provide further support to the suggestion of Allan [2], who advances that detecting and recognizing a co- morbid ED, can be difficult for PWD.

In people with T2D, the tendency to report eating problems in the absence of an ED could be partly explained by a higher body mass index. In fact, over three quarter of the T2D patients were either overweight or obese. This weight condition implies that they are frequently reminded about the necessity to pay close attention to their eating in order to lose weight [19].The therapeutic approach in the context of diabetes management, especially for those with T2D, focuses on eating control, weight management [19], weight measurement [20] and a loss of 5% to 7% of the actual weight [21]. In this context, diabetes patients can understand that they have an eating problem that need to be treated. Additionally, as their feeling of satiety might be altered by their diabetic medication [22] losing weight can be quite a challenge and, when realizing they are unable to do so, they may further believe they have eating issues resembling to those found in ED. Thus, T2D patients may confound weight management problems with eating problems and some psycho education about ED could be beneficial for them in order to better understand the symptoms of ED and better evaluate their likelihood of really having an ED. On the contrary, approximately 5% of PWD don't think they have eating problems while the EDE- Q6suggest they have one. This was significantly more likely to be observed in T1D patients, which is in line with Allan’s results [2]. Yet, in Allan's study [2] a much higher proportion (38.8%) of people with T1D thought they had an ED diagnosis while they did not have one. This difference in proportion between both studies might be explained by the formulation of the question that was asked in the current study: this question focused on the participants’ perception of having eating problems and not precisely on whether they believed they had an ED diagnosis. Also, participants in Allan's [2] study were recruited through a registered charity for PWD and ED - Diabetics with Eating Disorders (DWED) -while the participants in the current study were recruited in a registered charity for PWD only-Diabetes Quebec. This implies that participants in Allan’s study [2] were already concerned with having an ED, which was not the case in this study. Notwithstanding these differences, Allan's [2] results and the one obtained in the current study are alarming as they imply that diabetes treatment management can be impaired by the absence of ED acknowledgement. If PWD are unaware of in deny of having an ED, they are strongly at risk of developing harmful and even fatal medical complications and to endure long lasting and persistent eating problems [14].

Based on this study results, it seems that providing PWD with information about EDs and about the fact that the eating restrictions inherent to diabetic management can lead to ED appears very relevant. In fact, not only PWD but also health professionals working with them need to develop a more thorough understanding of how eating problems and disorders are experienced by PWD and of their impact on diabetes management. Standard guidelines about ED’s definition and assessment in the context of diabetes could thus be beneficial for clinical practice. As such, a more systematic evaluation and monitoring of eating habits and symptoms seems important given that PWD are not able to detect themselves whether or not they have an ED. Although the EDE-Q6 can't be used alone for establishing and ED diagnosis, it shows good agreement with the diagnosis interview [21] and thus could represent a good tool to assess eating pathology in PWD. Along with it, other measures such as the Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised (DEPS-R) [23] could be considered.

Man City beat Brighton to set new record top-flight points total

Manchester City delivered another attacking masterclass as they established a new top-flight points record with a 3-1 victory over Brighton at the Etihad Stadium.

In Yaya Toure’s final game as a City player, goals from Danilo, Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho ensured Pep Guardiola’s team surpassed the 95-point tally set by Chelsea under Jose Mourinho in 2004-05.

Another Chelsea record – this time from 2009-10, during Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure as manager – went when Silva stroked home City’s second which brought up 104 league goals for the season.

Fittingly, City’s latest accomplishments came against opponents who they began this record-breaking campaign against, on a sun-kissed evening on the South Coast last August.

On that occasion, Guardiola’s side required help in the form of a Lewis Dunk own goal but City have required little assistance ever since and are threatening to add to a compendium of club and domestic records before the season is out.

The Premier League champions may yet conclude the campaign by becoming first team to reach 100 points in an English top-flight season if they win at Southampton on Sunday (15:00 BST).

Out with the old in with the new

Much of the evening for those in sky blue was devoted to paying tribute to Toure in his final appearance for City at the Etihad, four days before his 35th birthday.

The midfielder’s name was replaced with the word ‘Legend’ on the teamsheet and City supporters went through a repertoire of songs paying tribute to the Ivorian.

At full-time, his brother Kolo – who also played for City between 2009-2013 – emerged to the tune of 2 Unlimited’s 1993 hit ‘No Limit’, to present his younger brother with a commemorative shirt.

If Toure, who has collected seven trophies since being signed by Roberto Mancini in July 2010 represents the past, Leroy Sane, a Guardiola recruit, embodies the present.

Having arrived from Schalke for £46.5m in 2016, this has been the 22-year-old’s breakthrough season in England and he was at his tricky best against the Seagulls – creating all three of City’s goals.

His quick one-two and surge through midfield created the opener, a driving run down the left and back-post cross laid on the second and some quick thinking and a precise cut-back delivered the third.

Sane has now been directly involved in more league goals this season than any other German player in Europe’s top five divisions – scoring 10 and providing 15 assists.

To the men reading: You may already do some of these things, and others you may not be in the position to do. But a good place to start is by, at the very least, reading the list through—in its entirety. And remember: These apply all year, not just during the annual 24 hours dedicated to half of the planet’s population. 1. Before explaining something to a woman, ask yourself if she might already understand. She may know more about it than you do. 2. Related: Never, ever try to explain feminism to a woman. 3. Trans women are women. Repeat that until you perish. 4. RESPECT PEOPLE’S PRONOUNS. It’s not hard. 5. Remember that fat women exist and aren’t all trying to get thin. Treat them with respect. 6. In fact, just never comment on a woman's body. 7. Be kind to women in customer service positions. Tip them extra. (But not in a creepy way.) 8. Trust women. When they teach you something, don't feel the need to go and check for yourself. And especially do not Google it in front of them. 9. Don’t maintain a double standard for… anything, ever. 10. CLOSE YOUR LEGS ON PUBLIC TRANSIT, OH MY GOD. 11. Trying to describe a woman positively? Say she's “talented,” “clever,” or “funny.” Not “gorgeous,” “sweet,” or “cute.” 12. Examine your language when talking about women. Get rid of “irrational,” “dramatic,” “bossy,” and “badgering” immediately. 13. Don't think to yourself, I describe men like that too. A) You probably don't. B) If you do, it's to criticize them for acting like a woman. 14. Do you love “fiery” Latina women? “Strong” Black women? “Mysterious” Asian women? Stop. Pick up a book on decolonial feminism. Read. 15. Stop calling women “feisty.” We don't need a special lady word for “has an opinion." 16. Recognize women's credibility when you introduce them. “Donna is lovely” is much less useful than “Donna knows shitloads about architecture.” 17. Think about how you describe the young women in your family. Celebrate them for being funny and smart, not for being pretty and compliant. 18. Examine the way you talk about women you’re attracted to. Fat women, old women, queer, trans, and powerful women are not your “guilty crush.” 19. Learn to praise a woman without demonizing other women. “You're not like other girls” is not a compliment. I want to be like other girls. Other girls are awesome. 20. Share writing by women. Don't paraphrase their work in your own Facebook post to show us all how smart or woke you are. I guarantee the woman said it better in the first place. 21. Buy sanitary pads and tampons and donate them to a homeless shelter. Just do it. 22. How much of what you are watching/reading/listening to was made by women? Gender balance your bookcase. 23. Feeling proud of your balanced bookcase? Are there women of color there? Trans, queer, and disabled women? Poor women? Always make sure you’re being intersectional. 24. Don't buy media that demeans women’s experiences, valorizes violence against women, or excludes them entirely from a cast. It's not enough to oppose those things. You have to actively make them unmarketable. 25. Pay attention to stories with nuanced female characters. It will be interesting, I promise. 26. If you read stories to a child, swap the genders. 27. Watch women's sport. And just call it “sports.” 28. Withdraw your support from sports clubs, institutions, and companies that protect and employ rapists and abusers. 29. Stop raving about Woody Allen. I don't care if he shits gold. Find a non-accused-abuser to fanboy over. 30. It's General Leia, not princess. The Doctor has a companion, not an assistant. It's Doctor Bartlett, not Mrs Madame First Lady. 31. Cast women in parts written for men. We know how to rule kingdoms, go to war, be, not be, and wait for Godot. 32. Pay for porn. 33. Recognize that sex work is work. Be an advocate for and ally to sex workers without speaking for them. 34. Share political hot takes from women as well as men. They might not be as widely accessible, so look for them. 35. Understand that it was never “about ethics in journalism.” 36. Speak less in meetings today to make space for your women colleagues to share their thoughts. If you're leading the meeting, make sure women are being heard as much as men. 37. If a woman makes a good point, say, “That was a good point.” Don't repeat her point and take credit for it. 38. Promote women. Their leadership styles may be different than yours. That's probably a good thing. 39. Recruit women on the same salary as men. Even if they don't ask for it. 40. Open doors for women with caring responsibilities by offering flexible employment contracts. 41. If you meet a man and a woman at work, do not assume the man is the superior for literally no reason. 42. If you're wrongly assumed to be more experienced than a woman colleague, correct that person and pass the platform to the woman who knows more. 43. Make a round of tea for the office. 44. Wash it up. 45. If you find you're only interviewing men for a role, rewrite the job listing so that it’s more welcoming to women. 46. Make sure you have women on your interview panel. 47. Tell female colleagues what your salary is. 48. Make sure there's childcare at your events. 49. Don't schedule breakfast meetings during the school run. 50. If you manage a team, make sure that your employees know that you recognize period pain and cystitis as legitimate reasons for a sick day. 51. If you have a strict boss (or mom or teacher) who is a woman, she is not a “bitch.” Grow up. 52. Expect a woman to do the stuff that's in her job description. Not the other miscellaneous shit you don't know how to do yourself. 53. Refuse to speak on an all-male panel. 54. In a Q&A session, only put your hand up if you have A QUESTION. Others didn’t attend to listen to you. 55. If you have friends or family members who use slurs or discriminate against trans or non-binary people, sit them down and explain why they must stop. (This goes for cis women, too.) 56. If you have friends or family members who use slurs or discriminate against women of other races, sit them down and explain why they must stop. (This goes for white women, too.) 57. If you see women with their hands up, put yours down. This can be taken as a metaphor for a lot of things. Think about it. 58. Raising a feminist daughter means she's going to disagree with you. And probably be right. Feel proud, not threatened. 59. Teach your sons to listen to girls, give them space, believe them, and elevate them. 60. Dads, buy your daughter tampons, make her hot water bottles, wash her bras. Show her that her body isn't something to be ashamed of. 61. But dads, do not try to iron her bras. This is a mistake you will only make once. 62. Examine how domestic labor is divided in your home. Who does the cleaning, the childcare, the organizing, the meal budgeting? Sons, this goes for you, too. 63. Learn how to do domestic tasks to a high standard. “I'd only do it wrong” is a bullshit excuse. 64. Never again comment on how long it takes a woman to get ready. WE ARE TRYING TO MEET THE RIDICULOUS STANDARDS OF A SYSTEM YOU BENEFIT FROM. 65. Challenge the patriarchs in your religious group when they enable the oppression of women. 66. Challenge the patriarchs in your secular movement when they enable the oppression of women. 67. Trust women's religious choices. Don't pretend to liberate them just so you can criticise their beliefs. 68. Examine who books your trips, arranges outings, organizes Christmas, buys birthday cards. Is it a woman? IS IT? 69. And if it is actually you, a man, don't even dare get in touch with me looking for your medal. 70. Take stock of the emotional labor you expect from women. Do you turn to the women around you for emotional support and give nothing in return? 71. Remember that loving your mom/sister/girlfriend is not the same as giving up your own privilege to progress equality for women. And that gender inequality extends beyond the women in your direct social group. 72. Don’t assume that all women are attracted to men. 73. Don’t assume that a woman in public wants to talk to you just because she’s in public. 74. If a woman tells you she was raped, assaulted, or abused, don't ask her for proof. Ask how you can support her. 75. If you see a friend or colleague being inappropriate to a woman, call him out. You will survive the awkwardness, I promise. 76. Repeat after me: Always. Hold. Men. Accountable. For. Their. Actions. 77. Do not walk too close to a woman late at night. That shit can be scary. 78. If you see a woman being followed or otherwise bothered by a stranger, stick around to make sure she’s safe. 79. This should go without saying: Do not yell unsolicited “compliments” at women on the street. Or anywhere. 80. If you are a queer man, recognize that your sexuality doesn’t exclude you from potential misogyny. 81. If you are a queer man, recognize that your queer women or non-binary friends may not feel comfortable in a male-dominated space, even if it’s dominated by queer men. 82. Be happy to have women friends without needing them to want to sleep with you. The “friend zone” is not a thing. We do not owe you sex. 83. Remember that you can lack consent in situations not involving sex—such as when pursuing uninterested women or forcing a hug on a colleague. 84. Champion sex positive women but don't expect them to have sex with you. 85. Trust a woman to know her own body. If she says she won't enjoy part of your sexual repertoire, do not try to convince her otherwise. 86. Be sensitive to nonverbal cues from women, especially around sex. We’re not just being awkward for no reason. (You read “Cat Person,” didn’t you?) 87. It is not cute to try to persuade a woman to have sex with you. EVER. AT ALL. Go home. 88. Same goes for pressuring women to have sex without a condom. Go. Home. And masturbate. 89. Accidentally impregnated a women who doesn't want a kid? Abortions cost money. Pay for half of it. 90. Accidentally came inside a woman without protection? Plan B is expensive. Pay for all of it. 91. Get STD tested. Regularly. Without having to be asked. 92. Examine your opinion on abortion. Then put it in a box. Because, honestly, it's completely irrelevant. 93. Understand that disabled women are whole, sexual human beings. Listen to and respect them. 94. Understand that not all women have periods or vaginas. 95. Believe women's pain. Periods hurt. Endometriosis is real. Polycystic ovaries, vaginal pain, cystitis. These things are real. Hysteria isn’t. 96. If a woman accidentally bleeds on you, try your absolute best to just keep your shit together. 97. Lobby your elected officials to implement high quality sex education in schools. 98. Uplift young Black and Indigenous girls at every possible opportunity. No excuses. 99. Do not ever assume you know what it’s like. 100. Mainly, just listen to women. Listen to us and believe us. It’s the only place to start if you actually want all women to have a “Happy International Women’s Day.”

Western Illinois, Year 21, 2027-2028

The Western Illinois Leathernecks try to defend their latest national championship in our College Hoops 2K8 sim dynasty.

Before we start Year 21 of Coach Rick’s tenure at Western Illinois, here’s a recap of everything that has happened so far last season:

Western Illinois entered the season seeking redemption after losing to Cal in the first round of the NCAA tournament the previous year. We struggled against a difficult non-conference schedule before sweeping the Summit League and again capturing the conference tournament championship. We entered the NCAA tournament at 24-6 overall.

We earned a No. 12 seed in the NCAA tournament. We defeated No. 5 seed Minnesota, 89-72, in the first round. We beat No. 4 seed Ole Miss, 116-85, in the round of 32 as senior wing Wilky Henry set a program record with 46 points. We defeated No. 1 seed Dayton, 109-82, in the Sweet 16, and then we beat No. 2 seed Indiana in the Elite Eight, 105-69. You can read a full recap of our road to the Final Four here.

We defeated No. 2 seed Pepperdine, 93-70, in the Final Four. We then beat No. 5 seed Villanova, 97-67, to win the national championship. Read a full recap of our Final Four performance + the offseason here.

We recruited for one scholarship and landed five-star JUCO shooting guard Edwin Wolfe after the season.

It’s our third national championship since I arrived at Western Illinois. Hang the damn banner!

Absolutely historic, hilariously dominant run for our ‘Necks, winning by an average of 27.3 points per game during our six-game sweep of the tournament. Did I mention that we were a No. 12 seed? We’re the lowest-seeded team ever to win the national championship — breaking our own record as a No. 10 seed in 2015 — and we did it with easily the largest margin of victory for any national champion ever.

When I took over at Western Illinois as a fresh 25-year-old head coach, I knew the school (read: the game) had a mandatory retirement policy after 40 years. We have now crossed the halfway point of the dynasty. A few numbers to contextualize our accomplishments here so far:

Overall record: 531-126

Summit League regular season championships: 18

Summit League tournament championships: 15

NCAA tournament appearances: 17

Sweet 16 appearances: 8

Final Four appearances: 4

NCAA tournament record: 36-14

And three ‘ships. The goal is turn the worst college basketball program ever into the best college basketball program ever. We’re coming for you, Coach K.

The best news? We return four starters from last season. While our stud small forward Wilky Henry is off to the NBA, everyone else is coming back, including iconic power forward Allan Cunningham. In the previous two times we won a national championship, we lost in the first round the very next year. We can’t let that happen again this season.

We’re running it back.

Here’s a first look at our roster heading into Year 21.

Back-to-back national championships is one thing we yet to accomplish during our time at Western Illinois. We want national title No. 4 and we have the team to do it.

Let’s meet the starters. If you click the link on their name it will reveal their full attributes.

PG Tron Whaley, redshirt senior, 90 overall: Whaley is everything we want out of a point guard. He has great size at 6’4, he’s the team’s best three-point shooter with an 87 rating from behind the arc, and he’s been less turnover prone than some of our lead guards in the past. He also has a sick name. Tron famously scored 21 points in the first half of our Sweet 16 win over No. 1 Dayton last season before leading us to a national title. He already feels like a top-three point guard in program history, but another title could have him going down as the best to ever play the position for the ‘Necks. Former No. 128 overall recruit with C+ potential.

SG Mathew Alloway, redshirt sophomore, 87 overall: Alloway was a rare freshman starter for the Leathernecks last season and provided a steady scoring presence on the perimeter. He’s grown an inch to 6’7 over the offseason and projects as a burgeoning two-way force at shooting guard. Alloway has improved to an 81 rating in three-point shooting with promising defensive playmaking ability. He still needs to work on his awareness at both ends. The former Mr. Basketball out of Minnesota was once the No. 31 overall recruit and has B- potential.

SF Wilbur Ager, redshirt junior, 91 overall: Ager is our only new starter, and he has big shoes to fill at small forward after Wilky Henry’s legendary NCAA tournament run last season. A 6’7 wing, Ager is a bit shaky as a three-point shooter (75 rating), but has a well-rounded skill set and no glaring weaknesses in his game. Former No. 110 overall recruit out of Chicago with C+ potential.

PF Allan Cunningham, redshirt senior, 92 overall: Cunningham has a chance to go down as the greatest player in program history as he enters his senior season. The 6’11, 292-pound power forward is a consistent scorer with a damn near unstoppable skill set. Ham uses his massive size advantages to bully opposing fours down low, but also can step out and rip three-pointers. He has proven time and time again that he is one of the most dependable players we’ve ever had during streams. We can’t wait to see how he closes out his legendary career. Former No. 67 overall recruit and projected top pick in the NBA draft.

C Pat Giddens, redshirt senior, 94 overall: It’s shocking to see Giddens return for his senior season after being projected as a lottery pick last season. Giddens starts the year as the second highest rated player in America. While he struggled to live up to his lofty overall rating for much of his career, Giddens proved his worth anchoring our title run in the middle last year. Giddens’ lack of height (6’9) could still be a problem against the wrong matchup, but he is hilariously large at nearly 300 pounds. Last year’s tournament run should silence any lingering questions about his game.

We’re going to be playing five guys off the bench for a 10-man rotation. Sophomore center Kevin Brazzle will be our sixth man as a 7’2 big man already projected as a first round pick by NBA scouts. He’ll be joined in the front court by fellow sophomore L.F. Neal, a 6’10, 201 pound string bean who flies all over the court whenever he’s in the game. 6’10 wing Jitim Dupre will get minutes at small forward as a freshman, while legendary recruiting bust Vitor Andrisevic gets a handful of minutes at the two in his senior year, and sophomore Jamie Burke runs backup point.

We also welcome one new recruit this year, five-star JUCO shooting guard Edwin Wolfe from Federal Way, Washington. Wolfe comes in as a 70 overall with C+ potential, which is for sure disappointing. He’ll redshirt.

Recruiting

This isn’t just a huge season because we’re trying to repeat as national champions — we also have four scholarships to recruit for to ensure the future of the program is as bright as the present. Power forward is the biggest position of need, because we have four players who will be redshirt sophomores next year with a hole at the four. I considered going after a five-star JUCO power forward, but ultimately think it’s most important to focus on getting good guards.

After surveying the available options, I decide to use my early visits on the following players:

PG Alexis Willingham out of Chicago, No. 68 overall and No. 28 at his position

SG Jeromy Perry out of Atlanta, No 55 overall and No. 16 at his position

I also offer center Dick Copeland, ranked No. 113 overall and No. 2 at his position, and power forward J.J. Bracy, ranked No. 24 overall and No. 2 at his position, on first day we’re allowed to extend scholarships.

We also have a player to create for the winner of last year’s bracket challenge: reader Gavin. His created player requires a little explanation because it’s a reference to one of the most infamous moments in the history of our Twitch stream. A few years back, we lost an assistant coach during the offseason. As I went to hire someone new, the Twitch chat was going wild telling me to hire a man named Rudolpho Butt. I hired a different coach instead, and the chat turned on me quick. It remains a running joke to this day. The created player reader Gavin created is choosing to make? 6’11 power forward Rudolpho Butt Jr. As a reminder, we don’t go after the players we recruit to preserve the integrity of the game, but we’ll follow Butt Jr. throughout his career.

It’s time to begin the regular season. We start the year rated as a 99 overall. Let’s run it back.

First game: @ Dayton

It seems like only yesterday we were creating Matt Boswell as the winner of our first ever bracket contest. Now he’s a senior power forward at Dayton and one of the best players in America. Can’t believe it’s been four years! While many are saying Boswell’s reputation took a hit after he predicted he would be ‘dropping 28’ on Giddens in the Sweet 16 last year only to get completely demolished, we still respect what he’s accomplished during his college career. Now let’s send him out as a loser.

Loss, 89-81. Man, not how we wanted to open the year. We just fell apart in the second half offensively. Giddens had a nice night scoring the ball, but he also gave up 28 points to Dayton’s starting center. Boswell had 11 points as he was limited to 18 minutes because of foul trouble. More troubling: our shooting. It’s going to be tough to win any game when you only hit four three-pointers. Henry was our most prolific shooter last season so we’ll have to prove we can still rain threes without him.

Next we’re in the Hawaii Invitational tournament aka We Couldn’t Get the Rights To Call It The Maui. Win a championship and we take you to Hawaii, those are the rules. Our first game is against Harvard.

Win, 91-65. Ham going ham with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks on 11-of-13 shooting at the foul line. Love to see Tron with nine dimes to one turnover.

Next up, we face Michigan State, who is unranked but enters at 4-0 on the season.

Win, 101-82. GIDDENS, what a game. A cool 25 points, seven rebounds, and four stocks. Big is beautiful. Nice to see Ager consistently force his way to the line and give us some scoring on the wing. Bench brought it, too. Now we’re in the title game of the tournament against No. 21 Alabama.

Win, 105-82. Maui Hawaii Invitational champs! This felt very similar to our streams last season, when we turned every game into a blow out shortly after halftime and it never felt like there was any chance we were going to lose. We had six scorers in double-figures, and I was really impressed with Ager and Giddens in particular. Our Stream Team just keeps whooping ass. Let’s keep that energy going.

As we sim to the next week, I see that my shooting guard recruit Perry gets an offer from Troy that he likes better than ours. Bummer, but that means I can start visiting Bracy, who still doesn’t have any other offers and already has significant interest in our Leathernecks. Landing Bracy would be huge because he would get us two coaching points that have alluded us for the first 20 seasons: a) landing a five-star recruit in season, and b) signing an All-American. He’d also be the highest-rated recruit in program history. Here’s hoping. I also offer a scholarship to Skip Clemmons, a 6’6 shooting guard ranked No. 38 overall, to replace Perry.

Next up we have No. 17 LSU. The Tigers have quietly been a consistent winner in this simulation and might have their best team yet this season. This will be a big test.

Loss, 96-60. Woof. LSU just blew the doors off us from the opening tip. What an awful shooting night outside of Ham. That’s why he’s an icon. I’m hoping this is an instance of us being a better stream team than a sim team.

Next we have Louisville. The Cards beat us in a regular season game that we streamed last season and entered the NCAA tournament as a No. 1 seed. It seems like they’ve lost a lot of talent off that team and enter this game at 3-1 on the year.

Loss, 75-73. Man, that’s a tough one. Giddens was excellent, everyone else was just okay, and we coughed up the ball way too much with 10 turnovers. I need more out of my wings Ager and Alloway, who are way too talented to be combining for 11 points

As we sim to the next week, we have some news: J.J. Bracy is a Leatherneck!

YUGE. Bracy is the highest-rated recruit in program history at No. 24 overall, according to reader Evan’s Leathernecks Recruiting Database. He gets us the two coaching points as our first All-American and first five-star to commit in-season. He also plays a position of need and will likely slot into the starting power forward spot as a redshirt sophomore playing with four other seniors. It will be interesting to see how good he is during the stream games because he’s definitely undersized for a power forward at 6’6 and his numbers don’t blow you away. Hopefully he grows. Always great to land the Mr. Basketball in Illinois either way.

I feel like he’s going to be the most dominant create-a-player we’ve made yet. Can’t wait to follow his college career.

We’re also in position to land Alexis Willingham, who is at 100 percent with no other offers as we head into the second week of the early signing period.

We play this week Charlotte and then have our two early conference games

Win, 85-67. Wooo. Charlotte is also perennially excellent in this simulation, so it’s pretty great to beat them by 18. Our offense was spread around evenly to like every player the roster; no one with more than 10, everyone on the bench chipping in with a bucket or two. Then we win both of our early conference games big and that pushes us to 6-3 on the year.

As I sim to the next week, Alexis Willingham commits!

Willingham is a great get as the No. 68 overall recruit. He already has good size at 6’2 and will hopefully grow once he gets into school. I love his scoring ability (16.3 points per game) and his accuracy from three-point range (45.8 percent from deep). Turnovers are high, but that’s okay. It’s big-time to get any four-star recruit at the early signing period. It is really rare that we land multiple recruits at the early signing deadline, so I am thrilled by this.

We are also in great position for both of our other targets: center Dick Copeland and shooting guard Skip Clemmons. We lead by far for Copeland, and he doesn’t have any other offers. He’d be our highest-rated center recruit ever (No. 2 at his position) though he’s also short for a five man at 6’8. Clemmons has elite size for a shooting guard 6’6, 226 pounds and is also a 47.2 percent three-point shooter. Would be our best class ever if we can land both in the spring.

We have two games this week: home against Illinois and on the road against Kansas at Phog Allen. Let’s keep the momentum going vs. our forever rival the Illini.

Loss, 68-67. Ugh. Illinois is decent this season but they don’t have anyone close to 90 overall, so this is a big upset. Throw out the record books when these two programs meet, I guess. Our wings really let us down. How are Alloway and Ager only combining for three shot attempts on the night? On the streams it feels like Alloway averages three shot attempts himself every two minutes.

Now Kansas. Jayhawks are in something of a rebuilding year but are still talented af. Please show that Illini loss was an aberration.

Win, 89-69. Hell yeah. Look at our 7’2 backup center Kevin Brazzle go to work: 22 points in 24 minutes. That’s how you get on the NBA’s radar as a redshirt sophomore. We’ve never had anyone leave that early, but it would be kind of awesome to see him do it even if hurts us in the short term. Ham was great as well with 23 points. We only have one regular season game left and it’s against No. 2 Florida.

Florida is totally stacked and has one of the best rosters in the country. This is measuring stick game.

Loss, 82-78. Tough loss, but I like that we competed. Giddens has put together a really solid non-conference season and is taking a big jump up in production as a senior to help fill the scoring void left by Wilky Henry. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Florida again in March.

We enter conference season at 7-5 overall. Can we run the table the rest of the way? Yes we can. We sweep the Summit League once again and enter the conference tournament as the top seed at 23-5 overall. Here’s a look at our end-of-season stats.

Our big men just wrecked everything in their way this year. Giddens took a big scoring leap as a senior (19.2 points per game) to lead the team, Cunningham continued to prove he’s one of the most reliable performers in program history, and Brazzle showed why he’s a projected first round draft pick by becoming our third leading scorer despite being our sixth man. Pretty nice to have a 7’2 backup center with that type of ability.

Here’s a look at the shooting percentages. My first thought: Giddens better than 35 percent from three on respectable volume??? I’ve never seen him hit a three with my own eyes. Also this team needs to be jacking way, way more threes. We have shooters everywhere. That will be nice to have in our back pocket come tournament time.

Now it’s time for the Summit League tournament

2028 Summit League tournament

Time to lock down the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Our first game is against IUPUI.

Win, 91-43. Ham, Giddens, Brazzle, all wonderful. I love my big, beefy boys. How is anyone supposed to matchup with three bigs so huge and so skilled? Next game is against Southern Utah.

Win, 101-59. Throwing Giddens and Brazzle out there against Summit League centers is just unfair. Now we face UL-Calcutta for the conference tournament title and the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. Let’s go!

Win, 95-57. We’re going dancing!

I am fascinated to see what seed we get this time around. There were a few impressive wins on our resume, but also a couple bad losses in the non-conference slate. I’m thinking we could get anywhere between a No. 8 seed and a No. 12 seed. Avoid that 8-9 matchup might be for the best just so we don’t have to see a top-seed in the second round.

2028 NCAA tournament

Welp. We get a No. 9 seed and a first round matchup with No. 8 Michigan. If we win, top-seeded Xavier will be waiting in the round of 32. The quest to repeat is going to get very interesting in the first weekend.

There’s a strong case to be made that this is our best roster ever.

All five starters are rated as a 90 or above. We have nearly 600 pounds and 190 overall points in the front court. Knock down shooters in the backcourt. Another 90-rated player off the bench and oh yeah he’s 7’2.

I’m also shocked to say Giddens is our highest-rated center ever. At 96 overall, he’s tied with Ime Terrell, Bert Draughan, Billy Assel, and Vernard Fulton as the highest rated player in program history, per reader Evan’s database. There’s so much depth on this team, too. There’s only one question: who will fill Henry’s void as our go-to perimeter scorer? Ager, Alloway, and Tron are all talented enough to do it, but someone will need to step up if we’re going to repeat.

We’ve never streamed a game against Michigan before, so this is going to be a fun matchup. Here’s a look at how the two teams stack up:

How does scoring work?

We use a standard scoring format. You get one point for correctly guessing the winner in a first round game, two points for correctly a winner in a round of 32 game, four points for correctly guessing a winner in a Sweet 16 game, eight points for correctly guessing a winner in an Elite Eight game, 16 points for correctly guessing a winner in the Final Four, and 32 points for correctly guessing the national champion.

Match report v London Fields 16 July 2017

Past results against London Fields CC include a draw and three losses. Throw in another two defeats in 6-over tournaments and a pattern emerges. Expand a little on last year’s all-time worst ever result and a kind of blue-print for Hackney Umpire performances is suggested. And the HUCC Archives do not bandy-about phrases like worst-ever without reason: in 2016 against the same opposition, at the same ground, a humiliating 55 all out came, as inevitably as night follows day, after LFCC’s 336 punishing runs in 40 sapping, sweaty and quite literally bruising overs.

It is testament to our commitment, our resolve, our pig-headed-foolhardy-misguided refusal to recognise the limitations of our own selves that we return, time and again, back to the fray with optimism renewed. (Note: I woke up yesterday morning thinking we were in with a great chance of winning. Of course I woke up on the morning of the 3rd July 2016 thinking something pretty similar).

Foolhardy commitment aside, there have been some notable absences so far this season. But the next generation has stepped up to the mark under Anthony’s increasingly confident leadership. The Archives Department has been very grateful to those players that have volunteered to record the heroic, and occasionally less than heroic, deeds of the 2017 team (before this game: 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses). It has, in particular, been refreshing to return to a more linear narrative style in match reports, something I was in fact saying to Matt 'Barney' Smerdon, as we went in for drinks during the London Fields’ reply with the game hanging in the balance...

After 18 of their 35 overs London Fields scored 96 runs and lost 4 wickets. By comparison, at the same stage in the Umpires’ innings, our redoubtable opening partnership Anthony Pearce and David Dawkins had amassed 78 runs without loss. That cricketing equilibrium of runs and wickets was finely poised. A short sharp shower had us sheltering briefly beneath a mighty pitch-side London Plane, and the fourth and final act of the drama commenced with a mugginess in the air. A mugginess that the more theatrically minded could interpret as heralding some impending tempest.

Anthony throws the ball to Manny. To be fair, The Hawk's opening spell was slightly undercooked, taking no wickets and giving up an unpalatable 26 runs in 3 wayward overs. HUCC’s leading wicket-taker in 2017 seemed to be trying just that little bit too hard to find the magic recipe. With 14 overs left London Fields’ run rate is climbing but we know that 10 an over is possible. We’d done it ourselves in our innings. And with only 10 players in the field the gaps were there. The Hawk re-marks his run up. He adjusts his generous towelling headband. The ingredients are all assembled...

4 hours earlier Anthony won the toss and elected to bat. London Fields' opening bowlers may not appear obviously daunting but The Fields know us well. They know our weaknesses. They start both ends with a barrage of dibbly-dobbling. Fresh from the mauling at the hand of the so-called Gentlemen of so-called Cambridge our openers Anthony and David are wary. Scoring is difficult. The pitch seems variable: many deliveries dibble significantly, only for the next ball to dobble alarmingly. Patiently we build the platform.

The highlight of the opening passage of play comes when Anthony passes 28 bringing up his 1,000th run for the Hackney Umpires. Although not particularly Anthony-like, our captain’s edge through vacant 3rd slip down to the boundary was possibly a tribute to the vast majority of the 5,000 runs we have collectively amassed over the years many of which have been streakier than Erica Roe eating a bacon sandwich. We stand and applaud this heroic achievement for fully 5 seconds until subdued by Anthony’s indifference and everyone else’s lack of knowledge of the milestone.

One over the go before the 18 over drinks break and Anthony unexpectedly finds another gear bludgeoning 19 runs from the over to reach 49no.

78-0 is a good start. Solid. Level-headed. We discuss tactics during the break. The feeling is we need to press on a bit. We need to take the game to the opposition. Rates need to be upped. Gaps pierced. Ones turned into twos. Boundaries found. This is of course the kind of strategy we have had many times before, that almost inevitably precedes an initial flourish followed by a rapid flurry of wickets, a battling retrenchment and inevitable collapse and recriminations.

Not unsurprisingly then, both openers fall with the score on 87 playing on looking to up-the-old-rate. Yet despite this Anthony’s 55 and David’s 24 suggest we now have an opening partnership that can fend off good balls and profit from the bad ones.

Kieran Kumaria, last seen for the Umpires in August 2015, returns to the field. Having not picked up a bat in 2 years Kieran seamlessly begins caressing sumptuous cover drives (straight to a fielder for a single, but still lovely shot). At the other end Jack ‘The Gunslinger’ has spent 20 overs prowling up and down like a caged tiger then surprises us all by seeing out 3 dot balls.

The received wisdom is: if you're going to flash - flash hard. Clearly this created some problems for the BBC Light Entertainment Department during Operation Yewtree, but in the context of the next few balls it was Are You Being Served, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum and The Royal Variety Performance all rolled into one. After the 3 dots Jack smashes 24 runs from the next 7 deliveries and the field spreads.

The people of London Fields are widely acknowledged as discerning cricket observers. I can’t replicate the emphasis or the joy of the following, but Jack’s batting got the crowd going and the phrase “Put the rubbish in the bin” was bellowed more than once. This was followed by “Put the rubbish in the pool” as Matt Veal followed Jack’s ignition of our innings, keeping the throttle fully open with 35 runs in his first 15 balls including a flat-clubbed 4 straight over the bowler’s head that Kieran at the other end will surely have recognised from the Yankee Stadium.

Eventually Kieran joins in the fun, cutting loose at the end of the innings to finish on 57 runs from 37 balls with Matt left on 47 not out and a total after 35 overs of 229 for 3.

The Archives Department loves a good stat. Here’s one:

Final 5 overs 50 runs

What you might call a beautifully constructed innings.

During the innings break we keep ourselves level-headed by remembering that we once set LFCC a total of 203 that they sauntered to in less than 30 overs. Jack and Manny take the new ball. Jack’s first delivery flies to the boundary for 4. Sometimes you look around the field and you just see gaps. It doesn’t help that we only have 10 players. But we back ourselves. Jack’s pace brings a mistake from the batsman, the ball loops up and Matt Veal stretches to take a great catch.

We stem the flow of runs. Kannan at backward point makes a fine stop, once again putting himself on the line for the cause.

Kieran replaces Manny and, two years on from bowling a ball, offers up a maiden to start. Followed by 7 overs of probing bowling very occasionally punctuated by the odd-legside delivery. After 10 overs The Fields are 63-1.

New recruit Andrew Swain looks a handy bowler. An enthusiastic dog delays the 11th over of our innings by running off with the ball. Undeterred Andrew is off the leash once more, sending down a schnauzer of a ball, the batsman attempts to whippet away but makes a spaniel of it and Matt “Barney” Smerdon behind the stumps is the golden retriever. Two-down.

One over later and Kieran’s bowling gets a double reward the other opener plays on looking to hit out and a catch lobbed to safe hands Matt Veal at mid-wicket. Double-wicket maiden and LFCC are reeling at 77-4. Kieran returns to the Disco Party end where they presciently welcome him with Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Jason Lord, we have seen him bat at length before, steers the batting side to drinks. Barney all the while restricting his attempts to sneak singles with a series of attempted stumpings at least one of which looked a decent shout.

But while LFCC need to score quickly, they still have wickets left and so it is we return to Manny Hawks, who we left a few paragraphs ago preparing his ingredients, and readying his recipe. And like Mary Berry, Manny goes out all-buns glazing.

In his next 4 overs the remainder of the London Fields batting order is dismantled as Manny lets the ball do the work, swinging it into the stumps twice in the 22nd over, assisted an over later by Andrew clinging on to a dying catch at point and finally removing the opposition captain with a regulation catch to mid-on. All that’s left are three balls of slow left arm to remove the last partnership and the win is ours. London Fields all out for 138.

Forget the patterns of the past. Ignore the old blueprint of HUCC performances. Despite 7 of the players from a year ago being part of the team this was something a little bit different.

Sandi stars in Freo thriller

FREMANTLE young gun Ed Langdon booted a goal after the siren to hand the vastly improved Dockers a two-point JLT Community Series triumph over Collingwood in Mandurah on Saturday.

The 21-year-old marked in the dying seconds and, from about 40m out on a 45-degree angle, drilled the match-winning major and was swamped by his teammates as they ran out 1.11.12 (87) to 1.12.4 (85) winners at Rushton Park.

It was a morale-boosting performance for the Dockers after last week’s rusty first-up showing against West Coast, but there was also plenty to like for the Pies as they fought back from 15 points down at the final change in 37-degree heat.

Importantly, star Freo ruckman Aaron Sandilands and reigning Doig medallist Lachie Neale both got through unscathed in their comebacks from injury in energy-sapping conditions.

Sandilands, returning from a calf strain, was instrumental as Freo’s engine room bounced back from the Eagles loss.

The 34-year-old finished with 15 touches, 20 hit-outs and a goal, proving that yet again he holds a key to the Dockers’ fortunes this season after missing most of last year through injury.

Neale (18 touches) worked into the game coming back from three bouts of surgery.

Meanwhile, back-up ruckman Jonathon Griffin (two goals) made the most of his opportunity in a hard-fought battle with Brodie Grundy and Mason Cox.

“I thought you could see how important Aaron is to us, and Lachie Neale and our mids capitalised,” Dockers coach Ross Lyon said.

“They were against pretty competitive ruckmen today. (Brodie) Grundy’s an enormous talent.

“So for (Sandilands’) first hit-out it was a credit to him. I thought with Jon Griffin that’s as strong as we’ve looked in combination for a while.”

The Dockers ratcheted up their intensity after the loss to the Eagles and – led by recruit Bradley Hill’s (one supergoal, one goal) precise kicking and line-breaking run – were much slicker as they took a three-point lead into quarter-time.

Freo should have been further ahead after controlling possession (83-68), clearances (9-4) and inside 50s (14-8).

But Collingwood’s ability to absorb pressure and counter-attack was impressive and the Pies made the most of a slight breeze to hit the front by two goals at the long break.

American giant Cox provided a focal point in attack and the Pies’ fleet of runners swung the momentum back the visitors’ way.

“(Cox) was off the pace early, his contest and work rate wasn’t where we needed it to be, but I thought that was a real step forward for him to be able to respond to that and to be a pretty significant forward target,” Pies coach Nathan Buckley said.

Injury sours Dockers’ win

“He’s actually had a really strong pre-season … even if he’s not marking them he’s putting defenders under pressure.”

In their first hit-outs of the pre-season, Collingwood stars Scott Pendlebury, skipper for the day Taylor Adams and Adam Treloar all had their moments as they blew out some cobwebs.

Youngster Tom Phillips (14 disposals) impressed with his dash, while Adams (21) was his typical busy self at the coalface.

Jeremy Howe was also superb for the Magpies, finishing with 24 touches and a supergoal to level scores at 73-all in the final term.

The Dockers appeared far more in tune in their second pre-season hit-out, and recruits Hill, Cam McCarthy and Joel Hamling showed encouraging signs.

McCarthy impressed with his workrate and snapped his first goal in purple in the opening term, while ex-Western Bulldogs premiership defender Hamling’s intercept marking was a feature.

However, former Cats forward Shane Kersten had a tough day with just four touches before he was crunched in a marking contest on the half-time siren and taken to hospital for X-rays on his ribs.

WHAT WE LEARNED Fremantle: The Dockers’ midfield was under the microscope after last week’s disappointing effort in Geraldton, but a much-improved showing has eased concerns about Freo’s ability to win enough ball. Aaron Sandilands and Lachie Neale’s additions obviously helped, however the Dockers simply had more contributors – with Stephen and Bradley Hill in particular exciting with their dash and ball use – and didn’t have to rely as heavily on superstar Nat Fyfe.

Collingwood: For a player entering only his third AFL season, Darcy Moore is carrying a weight of expectation as the Magpies’ focal point in 2017. However, the three-goal performance of Mason Cox against Freo was a promising sign that Moore might have more support than expected. Cox only took two marks, but his presence drew the ball and defenders to him, and the giant American could ease the pressure on Moore if he continues his rapid development.

NEW FACES Fremantle: Most Dockers under-performed last week, but there was a lot to like from the new crop against Collingwood. Bradley Hill was back to his line-breaking best and used the ball with penetration. Cam McCarthy worked hard up the ground and hit the scoreboard, while ex-Bulldogs premiership backman Joel Hamling’s intercept marking – he took three in the first term alone – was a highlight. Shane Kersten was sent to hospital for X-rays on his ribs after a quiet opening half, while young ruckman Sean Darcy impressed again with his competitiveness.

Collingwood: Chris Mayne had little impact against his former side, gathering just five touches, but forward sidekick Josh Daicos was lively with his pressure and showed his class in the opening term with a one-handed take and dish to set up Tom Phillips’ goal. Will Hoskin-Elliott and Henry Schade flew under the radar, but ex-Melbourne defender Lynden Dunn battled hard – playing mostly on McCarthy – against a flood of supply.

NEXT UP Fremantle has a six-day turnaround before facing Carlton next Friday night in what will be the Dockers’ sole hit-out on Domain Stadium before round one. The Pies hit the road for their final JLT clash in Moe against Richmond on Saturday.

We simulated a video game to try making the greatest college basketball coach ever at Western Illinois

Western Illinois is trying to become the greatest college basketball program of all-time in our simulated dynasty in College Hoops 2K8.

Welcome back to the Western Illinois Leathernecks’ chase for greatness in our simulated dynasty in College Hoops 2K8. This series was started in the early days of the pandemic after real sports were put on hiatus. The objective was spelled out bluntly in the headline of the very first story: Can the worst college basketball program ever win a video game national championship?

I decided to takeover Western Illinois University in College Hoops 2K8 — the last college basketball video game made by 2K Sports — and try to lead them to a title while simulating every game. I would only control the recruiting and coaching strategies. Now in Year 19 of the series, the goal has changed. At this point, I’m trying to see if Coach Rick — better known as Ricky Charisma — can turn into the greatest college basketball coach of the modern era.

Here’s how the game works: as you accomplish certain tasks — beating the No. 1 team in the polls, landing a five-star recruit, ect. — you earn bonus points to improve your coach in six different categories. Staying at Western Illinois still has its challenges: we get fewer recruiting points as a low-major program, and some prospects prioritize playing at a premier school.

The project has grown in ways I never would have imagined. We stream every NCAA tournament game on Twitch to an eager community of fans (please join us). We run yearly bracket contests with the winner getting to create themselves or a character as a five-star recruit in the game (more on that later). We’ve also have a fan-started Instagram page, subreddit, and recruiting database. One reader in Japan even wrote a novel about the first eight seasons of our journey. Seriously.

The game gives you 40 seasons, and I plan on playing it out. New readers are very welcome to parachute into the middle of this, but you can find spoiler-free links to every season here if you want to read from the beginning. Skip the next few bullet points if you don’t want a big picture recap of everything that’s happened up to this point.

Coach Rick is now 43 years old as he enters Year 19 of his career with the Leathernecks. We won our first national championship in Year 8 (or 2015) as a No. 10 seed. We won our second national championship in Year 13 (or 2020) as a No. 7 seed. We went to the Final Four one other time, in Year 11.

Coach Rick’s record currently stands at 475-113 for his career. We are usually going undefeated in the Summit League at this point — unfortunately, the game doesn’t have conference realignment.

Our season has ended in the Elite Eight the last three seasons.

Coach Rick has a career record of 30-12 in the NCAA tournament. The 30 tournament wins would be tied for eighth among active college basketball head coaches.

Before we pick up with Year 19, here’s a recap of everything that happened last season

We started the year ranked No. 18 in the preseason polls and rated as a 99 overall with four returning starters. We dropped only one game — to No. 5 Stanford — during the regular season and then won the Summit League tournament once again.

We earned a No. 4 seed to the NCAA tournament and blew out No. 13 seed Florida Atlantic in the opening round, and No. 5 seed San Diego State in the round of 32. Read the recap here. We landed a four-man recruiting class that was ranked No. 9 overall in the country. It’s considered our best recruiting class ever.

Western Illinois, Year 19, 2025-2026 season

Here’s a look at the roster coming into the season:

We return two starters from last year’s Elite Eight team. After losing four seniors to graduation, this year’s team to going to feel different. We’re unranked to start the season, but rated as a 97 overall.

Let’s run through the starters real quick:

PG Angel Keita, redshirt senior (90 overall): Averaged 8.2 points and four assists per game on 37.8 percent three-point shooting last season as a first-time starter. Experienced major turnover issues in the second weekend of the NCAA tournament, coughing the ball up a combined 12 times in our two games. The 6’2 guard is super fast (96 rating in speed), and he’s the best passer (89 rating) and second best three-point shooter (81 rating) on the team. After a disappointing end to last year, he needs to regain the trust of the fanbase and show out in his final season of college basketball. Former No. 58 overall recruit with C- potential.

SG Wilky Henry, redshirt junior (87 overall): Henry enters the starting lineup for the first time after moving from small forward to shooting guard, where he falls one point on his overall rating. He’s grown three inches since entering the program and is now a 6’8 wing who can shoot from deep (81 rating in three-point shooting) and finish above the rim (86 rating in dunking). Extremely impressive ball handler (90 rating) for a 6’8 wing. A little slow for a two guard with an B- grade in speed. Former No. 80 overall recruit with C+ potential.

SF Vernard Fulton, redshirt senior (94 overall): Projected as a first round pick in the last NBA draft, Fulton made the shocking decision to return to Western Illinois for his senior season. He is our first four-year starter in a long time. A natural power forward, Fulton moves to the wing for his final season, where he drops one point overall. While Fulton hasn’t been a primary scoring option before, he does all the little things that help teams win. He enters the year with A+ ratings in inside finishing, defensive rebounding, and defensive awareness. He’s also a capable three-point shooter (76 rating) who is fast enough to play the wing with an 84 speed rating. Has a strange but quick release on his jump shot that has drawn comparisons to Shawn Marion. Former No. 30 overall recruit with B+ potential. Projected top pick in the NBA draft.

PF Allan Cunningham, redshirt sophomore (85 overall): Cunningham is a massive 6’11, 281-pound big man who enters the starting lineup after a breakout NCAA tournament run last season. Scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting in our Sweet 16 win against Louisville. Surprisingly fast (A- speed) and extremely skilled as a three-point shooter (80 rating). Former No. 67 recruit with C+ potential.

C Timon Suotamo, redshirt senior (91 overall): Affectionately nicknamed ‘Chewy’ by the fanbase, Suotamo moves into the starting lineup after being our sixth man last year. He’s an elite inside finisher (99 rating) and a solid shot blocker (93 rating) who only has B/B- ratings as a rebounder. Second on the team in scoring last season by averaging 12.1 points per game. Former five-star JUCO recruit with A- potential. Projected lottery pick.

I went back and forth on flip-flopping the forwards since they’re both natural fours (I wrote about the decision at our subreddit) but ultimately thought Fulton’s speed and passing advantage over Cunningham made him a better fit for the wing.

We’re going with a nine-man rotation this season. Sophomore center Pat Giddens (86 overall with A- potential) will backup both front court spots and get 16 minutes per game. Sophomore point guard Tron Whaley (81 overall) and freshman wing Wilbur Ager (80 overall) will get 11 minutes per game, and sophomore shooting guard Vitor Andrisevic (75 overall) will get five minutes per game.

We’re also redshirting the entirety of our incoming freshman class, which ranked No. 9 in the country. Here’s a look at our newest players:

C Kevin Brazzle, 76 overall with B potential: Former No. 127 overall recruit and No. 6 at his position. From Houston, stands 7’1.

PF L.F. Neal is a 77 overall with C+ potential: Former No. 137 overall recruit and No. 21 at his position. From North Little Rock, Arkansas.

SG Mathew Alloway is a 77 overall with B- potential: Former No. 31 overall recruit and No. 10 player at his position. He’s the fourth-highest ranked recruit in program history, per the Leathernecks Recruiting Database. Named Mr. Basketball in Minnesota.

PG Jamie Burke is a 71 overall with B potential: Former No. 71 overall recruit and No. 24 at his position. From Dallas.

Recruiting

We have three scholarships to recruit for this season. We need a guard, a wing, and a big. There’s an extra emphasis on getting a quality small forward, because that’s the only position we didn’t land last season. I decide to use my visits on the following players:

SG Kim Dewitt out of Pueblo, CO, ranked No. 18 overall and No. 6 at his position

SF Tanoris Estrada out of Oakland, ranked No. 54 overall and No. 8 at his position

Dewitt is an All-American, which would get me a coaching point if we can land him. I offer both players a scholarship on the first day I’m allowed to do it. My final scholarship offer goes to 6’8 center Daryl Brittian, who is ranked No. 159 overall and No. 9 at his position.

We also have to create a character for the winner of last year’s bracket challenge — Sean Garland. Here’s what Sean wrote:

My player will be me, he’ll be as true to life-size (5’5”, 150) as the game will allow. Slashing point guard similar to De’Aaron Fox or John Wall, with great passing skills and plenty of speed to burn. Decent outside shooter but more often uses his quickness to get to the rim through traffic. Predictably bad at contesting shots on defense but can pick a pocket or two. Messy blonde/light brown hair and I’ll also continue the created player beard trend we’ve got going here. Also not sure if I can still pick a future opponent too but if so I’d love to see a Houston matchup!

Garland is our fourth created player to enter the Leathernecks Cinematic Universe. It’s worth noting our first winner Matt Boswell committed to Dayton and ended up winning national freshman of the year. There is information on how to enter this year’s bracket contest at the bottom of this post.

It’s finally time to start the season

We open the year against our in-state rivals Illinois. The Illini are a 92 overall. Let’s go!

Loss, 69-57. Man, that is not how we wanted to start the season. Just a brutal shooting performance from our guys: we shoot 29 percent from the field and go 1-for-18 from three-point range. Our backcourt of Keita and Henry was particularly brutal. You aren’t beating anyone when you’re that cold and also have 16 turnovers.

As we sim to the next week, Brittian gets an offer from New Mexico that he likes significantly better than ours. We drop him and offer Artie Snipes, a 6’11 center out of Riverside, California who is ranked No. 177 overall and No. 10 at his position.

Next on our schedule is Arkansas. The Razorbacks are an 85 overall. Can we pick up our first victory of the season?

Win, 81-68. Look at Fulton bully his way to 17 points by going 11-of-12 from the foul line. We love to see it. Keita had a nice game (14 points on 6-of-11 shooting), and I was impressed by our young bench of Tron Whaley and Wilbur Ager. That was a game we had to win and we took care of business.

Seton Hall is next. The Pirates are No. 14 in the latest polls and enter the game as a 96 overall. The Hall has been making deep tournament runs consistently in this simulation. This is going to be a huge test.

Loss, 96-89. We were able to hang tough against a talented team, but our offense just fell apart in the second half. The good news: Chewy was incredible to finish with 34 points and seven rebounds, and I loved what Keita did putting up a 14-8-5 line. Bad news: Fulton fouled out in 16 minutes, and Henry and Cunningham didn’t do anything. We fall to 1-2 overall, which is not how we wanted to start the season.

As the early signing period begins the next week, we face an uphill climb for both Dewitt and Estrada despite being the only offer at the moment for both. Colorado leads for Dewitt, and San Jose State leads for Estrada. I’m going to ride it out but I fear that we may need to start looking into backup options.

We have two games this week. The first one is against Dayton, led by iconic sophomore power forward Matt Boswell.

Win, 91-75. Boswell was excellent (22 points on 7-of-14 shooting), but we were able to pull away early and lock down the win. I love what Henry was able to do (14 points on 5-of-9 shooting), and Chewy continues to be productive. Also shout-out to Tron for hitting double-figures in scoring for the first time in his career, I believe. He’s going to be really good down the line.

We wrap up the week with a home game against No. 11 Duke. That’s right, we got the Blue Devils to come to Macomb. Duke enters at a 95 overall. We streamed the simulated game on Twitch on Wednesday night. It should start when you press play:

Win, 96-74! We looked great ... expect for Keita, who the entire fanbase now hates. In better news, I have a feeling that Allan Cunningham is going to go down as a Leathernecks legend. He’s such a killer finisher on the inside and is shockingly super skilled on the perimeter. Here’s two great plays from Honey Ham (as the Twitch chat calls him) in this clipped by reader Abby: a tomahawk dunk after getting the defense to bite on a pump fake, and a tip-dunk off a miss by Henry:

That’s our biggest win of the year. We’ve been shaky in simmed games so far this season, but I’m thrilled that we looked so good when we actually watched the game. That’s a great sign for tournament time when we watch every game.

As we enter the final week of the early signing period, I’m crossing my fingers we have chance with Dewitt, who is at 93 percent interest and still doesn’t have any other offers.

First, we have No. 9 Miami this week, who enters the game at 6-0 on the season. Big test. Can the win over Duke be a launching point for the rest of the season?

Loss, 87-71. Ugh. Another big game from Suotamo (24 points) and a solid effort from Keita (13 points and seven assists) but we got run off the floor in the second half. This team should have shooters — we have three starters rated in the 80s in three-point shooting — but we haven’t been able to consistently hit from downtown yet. That could be a problem. Next is our two early conference games that we have every year, and we blowout both South Dakota State and Fort Wayne.

We get some bad news on the recruiting front the next week: Dewitt commits to Colorado, and Estrada commits to San Jose State. The dream of landing our first All-American is pushed off to another year. Also, congrats to our created player Sean Garland for committing to Ole Miss. We have to find some new recruits now. After scouring the uncommitted prospects, I decide to offer the following players:

SF Jitim Dupre out of Chicago, ranked No. 91 overall and No. 19 at his position

PG Koko Reeves out of San Antonio, ranked No. 62 overall and No. 27 at his position

I love Dupre’s size on the wing, and considering most of my players have been growing once they get in school, I figure he could get up to 6’11 or so eventually. Reeves is small at 5’10 but his AAU numbers were tremendous. We could really use a stud shooter like him in the backcourt.

I’m also continuing to recruit Snipes, but I’m starting to get concerned because ‘playing at a big program’ is revealed to be his No. 1 priority.

Next on the schedule is a game against the defending champs and the team that knocked us out of last year’s NCAA tournament in the Elite Eight: UConn. The Huskies enter at 9-1 and No. 2 in the polls. They’re rated a 100 overall. I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Loss, 88-75. Can’t say I’m surprised with that result. We actually had it tied at halftime before another second half collapse. The loss drops us to 5-4 on the season.

We have three more games before conference play begins. The first one is against Notre Dame, who reached the national championship game last year before falling to UConn. The Irish appear to have lost most of their top players from last year but still look formidable.

Loss, 83-78. Man, we are struggling this season. I’m officially nervous we’re not going to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since Year 4 if we don’t get the automatic bid by winning the Summit League tournament.

Next up: Stanford. The Cardinal beat us in the regular season last year — one of only two losses we had all season — before reaching the Final Four. We’re out for revenge:

Win, 83-75! We really needed that one. That might have been the best game of Angel Keita’s career — 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals on 5-of-12 shooting. I don’t think he’s had a great season but it’s nice to see him step up against quality competition. Chewy continues to be a monster as the man in the middle, and I’m liking Henry’s production, too.

The final game of the non-con schedule comes against Charlotte. The 49ers have consistently been one of the best programs in the country in this simulation, so I’m not expecting this to be easy.

Loss, 90-63. Blown the hell out, sheesh. Suotamo was awesome (32 points) but otherwise that box score is UGLY. We can’t afford many more 3-for-14 shooting nights from three. The loss drops us to 6-6 as we enter conference play.

We are typically dominant in the Summit League, going six straight years without a loss at one point. Can we run the table and finish 18-0 in conference again?

Yes we can. We finish the regular season at 23-6 overall. Here’s a look at our team stats:

Suotamo had an absolutely dominant year, finishing second in the entire country in scoring behind a center from Cal. I’m pleased to see all five of my starters averaging double-figures in scoring. Keita’s per-game numbers look good, but it’s worth noting he was very inefficient as a shooter, finishing the year with at 43.7 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from three-point range.

In-season recruiting is now over as well. All three of our targets — Dupree, Reeves, and Snipes — have their recruitments totally up in the air to this point. We’ll have to wait for the spring signing period at the conclusion of this season.

That brings us to the Summit League tournament. While we’re clearly the best team in the field (the next highest rated in the conference is Southern Utah at 78 overall), this is still going to be intense because I’m not sure if our resume is good enough to get an at-large bid if we lose.

Summit League tournament

Our first game is against Oakland, who enter at 7-21 on the season.

Win, 56-52. OMG, we needed overtime! That could have been disastrous. We badly need to get our wings going. Anyway, survive and advance. Next up is Oral Roberts, who enters at 10-20 on the season.

Win, 99-41. That’s more like it. Suotamo goes off for 37 points by hitting 18-of-23 shots from foul line. Monster. Cunningham also adds 20 points in the win. Our front line is looking good. Also! This was also Coach Rick’s 500th career win, which gets us a rare coaching bonus point! It’s been years since I got one of those. Now we have Southern Utah in the title game. They enter at 18-12 on the season. I am unreasonably nervous for this.

Win, 96-61! Chewy scores 32, Cunningham scores 20, Fulton and Henry both with 15. We’re going dancing once again.

2026 NCAA tournament

We draw a No. 12 seed and a first round matchup with No. 5 Cal. Here’s a look at our current roster:
