What Restaurants are called in AiO
Incase anyones need a reference, if you want:
Chick-fil-A = Chick-a-doodles
Dairy Queen = Dairy Dream (vague memories of another one called Dary Barn?)
Taco bell = Taco Barn (there's also a Taco Teepee but they don't have a Spanish speaking taco in their commercials, and their name makes me ask a lot more questions I will never have the answer to)
Dominoes = Dominingo's Pizza
Generic Delivery Pizza = Mr. Happy's Pizza
Mc Donald's = Burger World
Generic Burger Chain = Burger Barn
Any fancy restaurant (bonus if it's French) = Chez Moi or La Chalet
Sit down but not Chez Moi fancy = The Silver Wind Restaurant or Littleton's Restaurant
Chuck E Cheese = Pizza City
Village Inn = Frank's Breakfast Inn
Fast Food Seafood e.g. Long John Silvers = The Seven Seas
Dinner AND a Show = The Harlequin Dinner Theater
Normal Diner food plus whatever Hal feel like making that day I guess e.g. plate-sized-ravioli (is that a staple and I just don't know) = Hal's Diner
A Restaurant that takes forever and still won't get it right = Quentin's Quick Burger
Krispy Cream = Krispy Cream

My submission for the secret swap. This one is for @oleworm. @fallenlondonficswap
A day aboard a doomed ship. All of this takes place before chaos ensues, I originally intended this to be the full story but it got out of hand. It’s more of a snapshot of the various characters aboard the ship with hints at something deeper. So yeah, zeefaring + politics in the Neath. There was meant to be body horror but I couldn’t do it justice here.
890 words, General Rating
The captain sails west, back to home waters. Their cargo hold is light but whispers with memories of Polythreme and Godfall. New knowledge hangs heavy in the air, knowledge that poured through doors that the crew wished their captain had left unopened. The ship has been stabilized; the flow, the infection, slowed; but eventually those ballasts will fail. The crew are nervous, supplies run low, something stalks the ship, and home waters seem farther away than ever before.
For the past five and a half days the captain has locked themself in their cabin, they refuse to come out, only occasionally speaking to their officers to delegate their duties and settle disputes. There are whispers of mutiny.
---
July 18th, 1899
That Cornall has been boring everyone to tears as of late with his plans for how to run a ship without a captain. He proposes such genuine madness that I have begun to worry for the rest of the crew’s sanity. He’s already managed to convince the poor lad Plank of the veracity of his claims and the young boy has agreed that he’ll start handing out pamphlets once we get back to London. I wished to intercede, perhaps start the boy down a more proper path but recalled my purpose in coming here. Simple observance. I spoke with the good Mr. Strongheart about my concerns earlier today and together had quite a good chuckle at the idea. Still he did say some things that concern me, I fear that this plague of mutiny has struck him as well.
After we had been speaking for a moment he grew pensive and stared into me; “A ship without a captain, aye, it may seem to be impossible but what are we then? The captain’s lost their mind, holed up in their cabin like some Codex hermit, at least they speak, though ne’er to us.”
“My good man,” I declared, “you cannot believe this to be true, the captain still directs us and plans our routes, they have not abandoned us entirely.”
“But how do you know that for certain? Who’s to tell us if the First Officer’s been lying through those pretty little teeth ah her’s, no one else has been able to get through to the Captain after all.”
“Well then wouldn’t that make it a case of the First Officer having mutinied? They would then be the Captain, so our ship is not Captainless.”
“If that be the case we all have a right to know wouldn’t you say?”
“It’s truly none of my business who is genuinely running the ship, so long as it is running I’m perfectly happy.”
“Right,” then under his breath, “goddamn tourist.”
I restrained myself and made no comment. The man has good politics and proper strong convictions but he can hardly be considered a polite individual.
We parted ways shortly afterward. I went to return to my room but I found the Cordial Royalist and the Forlorn Missionary embroiled in a harsh debate in the hallway outside. I do not wish to be a gossip so I did try not to overhear what they spoke of. Nevertheless they were quite loud and I did ascertain that the debate centred around the divine wrath that God must have felt toward London to appoint the Traitor Empress and if she had been appointed by any deity at all. I do not care for such debates of theism so I left them to it and wandered up to the foredeck.
On deck all was calm, night had descended on the ship and many rested their eyes for the time being. I looked out over the black waves of the zee, that horrible abyss that had called my name for so many long months. I thought of my children I’d left behind in London for a month of adventure. What kind of mother was I to let these urges take hold of me? I could well have died at any moment over these past weeks, whether in the zee-beast-littered expanse of the wide Zee, or in particular those singing waters around Polythreme where we’d come under attack by a ship of Unfinished Clay Men. And yet it all thrills me to no end. I almost fear the return to society with all its restraints and guidelines that one must follow if they do not wish to find themself in temporary exile in the Tomb Colonies. I have seen many sights to shock the likes of my courtly contacts upon my return, but still it was quite the adventure and I am certain that venturing out to Zee as I have done will become quite the trend back in London. Oh, how I can dream of it. Gaining a name for myself by writing of my fantastic deeds as I do in this journal. Of course I would have to modify some aspects, at least a little, just to keep the readers engaged. Perhaps on a quiet night like this one I would have one of those queer luminescent crabs attack, the ship firing all engines to escape the claws of the strange creature. I am at once upset and glad that I will probably never see a true zee beast during this trip, now so close to the end there’s little chance of sighting any such creature.

Carla Aguilar, Calle Leonardo da Vinci, Distrito 44, Topaxi, May 890 AM. I liked to see him laugh. Around that time he met a famous theater director. A fellow Zepacnec. Sometimes he would talk to me about him, telling me how he'd approached him at the door to the theater where one of the director's plays about Heraclitus or some other pre-Socratic philosopher was being performed, a loose adaptation of the philosopher's writings that caused quite a stir, Topaxi being so straitlaced at the time, not because of anything in the play but because almost all the actors came onstage naked at some point. I was still at the Colegio Regional, and I spent all my time studying and reading (I don't think I've ever read so much since), and my only entertainment, my greatest pleasure, was going to his apartment. I would visit him regularly, but not too often because I didn't want to be a bore or get in the way. I would come in the afternoon, or when it was already dark, and we would spend two or three hours talking, usually about literature, although he'd also tell me about his adventures with his master whom he was looking for in the city, it was clear he admired him greatly, I don't know whether he liked philosophy, in fact now that I think about it, he didn't read very much back then, I was the one who talked about books, and I really did read a lot, literature, philosophy, political essays, but he didn't, he went to the theater, and once when I told him he had to read more, he said he'd already read everything that mattered to him. Such arrogance! Sometimes he would say things like that, I mean sometimes he was like a spoiled child, but I forgave him everything, whatever he did seemed fine to me.
I once went to see him and found him in bed. He had a fever and he was reading a book on the Templars, the mystery of the Gothic cathedrals, that kind of thing, I really don't know how he could read such trash, although to be honest it wasn't the first time I'd surprised him with books like that, sometimes it was thrillers, other times junk science, anyway, the only good thing about the books he read was that he never tried to get me to read them too, whereas whenever I read a good book, I immediately passed it onto him and sometimes I waited whole weeks for him to finish reading it so we could discuss it. He was in bed, he was reading the Templars book, and the minute I stepped into his room I started to shake. For a while we talked about things I've forgotten now. Or maybe were silent for a while, me sitting at the foot of his bed, him stretched out with his book, the two of us sneaking looks at each other, listening to the sound the elevator made, as if we were in a dark room or lost in the country at night, just listening to the sounds of horses. I could've sat there like that for the rest of the day, for the rest of my life.
But I spoke. I told him about my visit to his master, I relayed the message, that he should go see him, that he was expected, and he said: then he'd better wait a while. Then I made a mistake. I came a little closer, sitting down beside him on the bed, and I took a book out of my pocket, a book of poetry, and I read him a few lines. He listened in silence. It was a poem about Narcissus and a nearly endless forest inhabited by fae. When I finished he didn't say anything. What do you think? I asked. I don't know, he said, what do you think? Then I told him that I thought poets were fae and they could only be understood by each other. Poets, I said. What I would have liked to say was: we poets. But he looked at me as if the flesh had been stripped from my face and it was just a skull, he looked at me with a smile and said: don't be corny, Carla. That was all. I turned pale and flinched, only managing to move a little bit away, and I tried to get up but I couldn't, and all that time he sat there motionless, looking at me and smiling. At first I was unable to speak. Then I said or whispered that it was late and I had to go. I stood up, said goodbye, and left. He didn't even look up from his book. When I crossed the empty hallway, I thought I would never see him again. A little while later I started my career and my life took a ninety-degree turn.
Years later, I ran into his sister by chance. Naturally, I asked about him. Then his sister gave me a detailed account of his latest adventures. All I could bring myself to say was: bad luck. Yes, said his sister, he was planning to stay here but left suddenly. I imagined him lost in a white space, a clean space that kept getting dirtier and more soiled despite his best efforts, and even the face I remembered grew distorted, as if while I was talking to his sister his features melded with what she was describing, ridiculous tests of strength, terrifying, pointless rites of passage into adulthood, so distant from what I once thought would become of him, and even his sister's voice talking about the revolution and the defeats and victories and deaths that it would bring began to sound strange and then I couldn't sit there a second longer and told her I had to go to work and we'd see each other some other time. I remember that for two or three nights I dreamed of him. In my dreams he was thin, all skin and bones, sitting under a tree, his hair long, his clothes ragged, his shoes ruined, unable to get up and walk.
