EEEEEE, MY TIME AS AN ALICE AND WONDERLAND FREAK HAS COME!

So while the original is technically more well known, most adaptations sort of merged the two, leading to certain scenes being far more popular from both, and both having their kind of unknown scenes.

If you're taking the tweedles for example, then you're actually using Through the Looking Glass. If you bring up the Jabberwocky, the red or white queens, humpty dumpty and his depiction as an egg (Caroll was the first to do this), or the garden of talking flowers, that's all Looking Glass.

Conversely, some notable scenes from the first book that tended to get adapted out include The Mouse's Tale, most of the character moments from The Caucasus Race (fun trivia reference, but the various birds that appear here represent the people that were in the canoe Caroll and the real Alice Lidell were in when he first told the story), the shouty duchess and her ugly pig baby (direct lead in to The Cheshire Cat scene), and the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle.

It's also notable that even some of the famous scenes tend to get misremembered, like the fact that the Queen of Hearts trial wasn't actually for Alice, it was for the Knave of Hearts who stole her tarts.

Okay so the thing is that I did read both the original and looking glass but that was..... back in middle school so it's been a While™. And I did bring up the Disney and American McGee versions because those are a lot fresher in my mind.

So yeah I do know a lot of the original, but there's also some dissonance based off what those reinterpreted and changed.

I have been considering moving the conversation between the avenger and the king to somewhere public, I just haven't quite figured out where. Originally, I had the avenger keep the king hidden in the dungeons so that nobody would know and try to rescue him or anything, but then again he on some level wants to do a public execution anyways because he's Like That™, so maybe the king could keep his mouth shut until he's out in the open and then drop the bombshell. Would that work?

To make matters more complicated, the avenger isn't actually the new king (yet, he plans on deposing his allies anyways), but the royals of the invading nation he's allied himself with. He's shot himself in the foot by not revealing his identity and bringing on devastation to the people he's supposed to be ruling in the future. He is frustrated by how limited he is by his allies, and wants to eventually break things off with them, what could prevent him from doing so?

The healer boy makes it back to his homeland, his father's castle (I will have the noble claim him as his bastard child from the start before all this goes down as you advised) and another foreign army tries to invade them, how feasibly could surviving generals (very high-ranking ones, the highest in the country barring the one general that oversees them all) incite other lords to come to aid? Could there be a political incentive to make people want to come? Could the avenger “help” with the expectation that they'll be indebted to him and his faction, to coerce them into swearing their loyalty to him?

He could but have you considered them having the conversation before the King goes to the dungeon? Say the avenger has the King paraded before him and the court to sort of gloat and rub his face in it and all the while he thinks he's winning then the King drops the bomb? That would have an impact. It also gives you the chance to make the King's punishment even worse and the drama an injection of more drama.

He obviously needs his allies for a reason, so find out why he made friends with them in the first place. Was it more men? Political backing? Money? What will he lose if he breaks their agreement?

If the noble is respected and powerful, many nobles will likely try to help him if they can. It's not just political, it's also through familial ties, friendships and solidarity. They don't even have to offer help in a big over the top way. I mean, imagine if somebody smashed your neighbour's windows, you'd at least offer to help them tidy up the glass or board up the window.

The avenger could help because it makes him seem in control and helpful, which are good traits to be if you're running the country and want the nobles on your side. Rocking up to help a noble in this trouble would show the other nobles that's he's powerful enough to protect them but also crush them if need be

With all the period accuracy going on, i was wondering what your opinion on a series of unfortunate events was?

Since it’s in a fictional universe and some alternate version of an unspecified point during the 20th century, I’m pretty sure anything goes. I can talk about historical influences I see in the costumes, though!

The movie went in a Victorian-ish direction, which I loved because I’m me. You can especially see it with Aunt Josephine:

1890s widow goals.

Violet’s dress has a thousand different historical things going on:

The bodice gives me 17th-century stays vibes, with that tabbing on the bottom and the conical shape. I’m not sure if the skirt length is an intentional nod to her age, but it looks like the recommended above-ankle-but-below-calf length for a 14-year-old girl in the late 19th century. The boots kind of resemble some styles I’ve seen from the early 20th century, like the originals that inspired the American Duchess “Colette” boot. 

This shot of the Baudelaires gives a great display of the general mishmash going on:

Klaus has a sort of generic Vintage Boy(TM) look going on; he wouldn’t look out of place among the more bookish guys I went to high school with c. 2009, even. Violet has the same dress under a princess coat that looks more 1930s-1950s, and Sunny’s in a full-on hooded cape. But again, this makes sense. It’s a totally different world where fashion evolved differently, meant to feel similar enough to our own to be relatable but different enough to be off-putting.

Moving on to the series, it’s still a bit of a jumble, but it seems to be jumbled slightly later than the movie. There’s a brighter color palette, and not much I saw would put any of it earlier than the 1930s.

Some looks on Violet that seem generic late 20th-early 21st century. The one on the end gives me slightly stronger vibes, specifically 1970s. Her hair is pretty generic, too, but generic in a way that makes the character seem far more anchored to a time frame of 1960s-present.

Violet and Klaus being. Well. Yeah. That. These outfits would just look like the kids had parents who were really into vintage if they were worn in modern-day America. Nothing terribly unusual or anachronistic- at least, not in a way that’s not currently trendy.

Looking up pictures of the adults’ costumes kind of surprised me, because I remembered them having a stronger Deco vibe, but they really do hop about the 20th century a lot, too:

Though she also rocks a bit of 1980s secretary

Kit just hit up Urban Outfitters Maternity (which I hope to all the gods does not exist).

I actually wasn’t fond of the costuming in the series, not because there’s any relevant accuracy to criticize, but because I felt like they took the easy way out. A bit of the specific kind of vintage that’s currently popular, bright colors and all, and...that’s it, really. I’m inclined to prefer the Grande Neo-Victorian Gothique style because I’m me, but honestly, I don’t mind the departure from that. I just wish they’d made it less anchored to modern, current fashion than they did.

So...yeah, those are my thoughts.
