DISCOGRAPHY REVIEW: 3) No Pressure

“Goddamn, goddamn, conversations with people/ Crazy how one day, the legends forget that they equal/ On this Under Pressure sequel/ We not taking it back, we keepin' it pushing/People scared of change but you'll find me deep in the cushion”

The final installment in Maryland rapper Logic’s discography, No Pressure, is a quite impressive project packed with nostalgia, growth, storytelling, and reflections on his journey as an artist and a father. With the help of executive producer No I.D., Logic brings a sound reminiscent of the prequel Under Pressure. Bringing strong lyricism, excellent and creative production, and a much more positive tone than previous project Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Logic stamps a footprint in 2020 and redefines the phrase “Going out with a bang”.

I did not expect this magnitude of excellence from Logic in this stage of his career. After Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, I figured his final album would have the hit single where he put all his efforts--i.e. “Soul Food II”--and 14 filler tracks of leftovers over the years. But Logic delivers a solid farewell project. If he truly decides this is his last, he’ll leave a good taste and solid image.

I thought the album cover and the similar title No Pressure was going to be a cash grab to allude to his massive success Under Pressure. I mistakenly assumed he was gonna use the praises of that album to trick people to listening to an average record. But he connects to this album in several ways. The classic mixtape x crisp sound he utilized has returned. He has distanced from complaining about his race, social media, and the hip hop industry, and instead returns to telling his own personal stories. 

The track “DadBod” is a great exemplification of this. Its a great example of evolving the sound and topics of conversation as he grows. He talks about how his life has slowed down; he doesn’t go through the same experiences he did when he started his career. As a father and husband, his everyday life is calmer. Yet the track is still a great listen. I think Logic handled this criticism well. He could’ve tried to rap hard and pretend he was in that struggle or complain in a track where he rants about people’s expectations of him (aka the Eminem Route). This actually relates to a complaint I had about Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. I felt he was too old and successful to be complaining like he was. No Pressure distances from that mindset and is embodied with much more maturity.

Maturity is a common theme throughout this project. “Amen” is a great track where Logic acknowledges the role his fans play in his success, similar to “Thank You” on YSIV. Also on the track “Dark Place”, he talks about his mental health and the toll of his past success. Except this time, it has a tone of acceptance and embracement, acknowledging that he had a strong impact on the hip hop community and thats GOOD. And its doesn’t feel good to know you can’t match past success but that’s also okay. Logic acknowledges he’s a 30 year old successful artist who’s experiences has helped him grow. And throughout this project he also pays homage to his influences via his production, the two best being “man I is” and “GP4″.

Now, there are some parts of this album I wasn’t a fan of. They weren’t necessarily BAD, they just didn’t do it for me. First is “Perfect”. It reeks of Bobby Tarantino and does not fit in this catalogue of songs at all. The good thing is its 1:40 runtime; I’d be more bothered if it was 3-4 minutes. But then that begs the question, its so short and different from the rest of the album, why include it? I think he could’ve removed this track altogether.

“A2Z” is the second track I wasn’t thrilled about. Its not bad, I get what Logic was illustrating, and I love his son is getting a publishing percentage. However, the alphabet rhyme concept is a little tacky in my opinion. Plenty of people have done it and its rarely executed in an appealing and interesting way. And this track unfortunately fits that trend, even though including his child in the intro tugs at the heart strings and bumps it above an average alphabetical rap. Part II of the track is a snippet of Logic rapping in the early 2000s as a teenager. This part isn’t bad either, but it doesn’t fit the topic of this song. This would’ve fit better on one of his other tracks that talks about his come up and his beginnings compared to where he sits today. But it feels out of place on this track.

I also want to quickly commemorate the intro and outro “No Pressure Intro”/ “Obediently Yours”. The speeches Orson Wells give set the tone for the project and are perfectly cohesive. They don’t feel out of place nor forced. It’s also refreshing to hear Thalia at the narrative helm again. Definitely helps bring the project back to the early sound of Under Pressure.

Even the unfavorable parts of this project do not make it bad. The only reason No Pressure is third on this list is because, like he discusses, he’s reached higher peaks. I have little to no gripes with this project; Logic came through with some heat to conclude his career. I personally do not think Logic is done with music. Plenty of rappers have started families and continued their musical careers. I definitely think we will see less, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take a backseat and work as a producer or writer. If this is his final project, he created a powerful farewell to hip hop/rap. If this isn’t his final project, however, he’s got a new standard that will be difficult to match.
