Foo Fighters @ Mt. Smart Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand 20/01/2024
Cussing and cigarettes, Jack Black, and 35,000 people’s love for rock and roll—Foo Fighters return to Auckland, New Zealand after six long years.
Riding the success of their 10th studio album, Foo Fighters were forced to delay their late 2022 tour to Australia and New Zealand when drummer Taylor Hawkins suddenly passed earlier in the year. There was some speculation that the band might retire after 25 years, but after a year of grieving (particularly for frontman Dave Grohl, whose mother also died in 2022) Foo Fighters announced that step-in drummer Josh Freese (The Vandals, Devo) would permanently be joining the band.
In what was their first show of 2024, Foo Fighters return exclusively to New Zealand and delight fans with one of their most dynamic performances to date. Although the set was evenly paced, sprinkled with new songs from last year’s studio album Here We Are (2023) and old classics to get everyone out of their seats, an almost 3 hour set was bound to have more than just a couple of highlights.
“Who came out and saw us when we played at that old speedway? That show was so loud it caused a seismic event,” said Grohl, referring to the volcanic-like tremor caused by the stamping feet of thousands of fans at Western Springs in 2011. “When I think about New Zealand, I think about an audience that can trigger an earthquake.”
It wasn’t the only time Grohl expressed his fondness for New Zealand, noting that he always has a great time whenever the band tours. Whilst Grohl shared stories with the crowd, the band teased snippets of songs from multiple artists (Metallica, The Ramones, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails) throughout the set, and even surprised everyone with a special appearance from actor and singer Jack Black for a cover of AC/DC’s Big Balls.
But in amongst the party, there were sombre moments too, like an acoustic stripped back version of My Hero and a tribute for Hawkins that the band perform every night. “This was the first song we wrote together and his favourite,” Grohl told the crowd before performing Aurora. A few times the lights were dimmed and the stadium lit up like stars as the audience held their torches to the sky, providing the perfect atmosphere for the warm summer’s evening soundtrack.
When the crowd weren't swinging their arms in unison over their heads, they were screaming and thrashing their heads at the peak of all the fan favourites, from The Pretender, to Monkey Wrench, to Best of You and their faithful encore Everlong. It's hard not to admire such a resilient act as this band who can seemingly overcome any obstacle thrown their way. Welcome back, legends.

A Story Told
Recently I was able to catch up with A Story Told to discuss what went into the writing process for their new single that released today. Their latest track, called “How Do You Write A Love Song?”, is about the tumultuous journey of finding a healthy relationship. The band will be embarking on a headlining tour later this month and tickets are available here. Where did the inspiration come from to title your new single, “How Do You Write A Love Song”? We have written literally hundreds of songs over our career, and not a single one of them has been a love song, so what better time than now? The title is kind of a tongue-in-cheek presentation of this realization and whether we even know how to write a love song. We’ll keep you posted on if we figure this out or not… I understand A Story Told will be headlining a few dates coming up. How are you planning to build out the setlist for this tour? Having just released our fourth full-length record, it’s been tough! Ha. With this being the Mundane Magic tour, we are definitely excited to be playing a lot of the new record for the first time. These songs were MEANT to be played live. And of course, we will be playing the fan favorites from previous records. We expect non-stop sing-a-longs for the entire set. How does A Story Told measure success? When we started this band, we just wanted to impact people the way our favorite bands impacted us growing up. So, as far as measuring success, the fact that people have been and continue to find meaning and support in what we do is what truly matters to us. After your band wraps up this tour in May, what does the rest of 2024 entail for the band? Anything special for fans to look forward to? We are a band that literally can’t sit still, so definitely expect a whole lot more new music and more shows and touring than ever before. Headline Tour Dates 4.28 Nashville, TN @ The End 4.30 Chicago, IL @ Beat Kitchen 5.1 Columbus, OH @ Ace of Cups 5.2 Pittsburgh, PA @ Smiling Moose 5.4 Philadelphia, PA @ Kung Fu Necktie 5.5 New York, NY @ Heaven Can Wait 5.9 Washington, DC @ Pie Shop 5.10 Charlotte, NC @ Evening Muse --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/features/interviews/a-story-told/

With the release of 2014’s critically applauded mini-album/EP Traitement Deuxluxe, Montréal-based psych rock duo Les Deuxluxes — vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Anna Frances and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Etienne Barry — quickly exploded in their native Québec. Building upon a rapidly growing profile across the province, the duo followed up with their critically applauded full-length debut, 2016’s Springtime Devil. Continuing upon that momentum, the French Canadian duo released a French translation of Springtime Devil album title track “Springtime Devil,” “Diable du pringtemps.” The band supported their efforts by making their way across the provincial festival circuit with stops at Montréal Jazz Fest, Festival d’été de Québec, Pop Montréal and M for Montréal. They’ve also opened for Lisa LeBlanc, Marjo, and Jon Spencer among others. They closed out 2016 with a mini-tour of South America that included stops in Santiago, Chile, Valdivia, Chile, Buenos Aires and São Paulo. The duo isolated themselves in a 19th century church in the remote Québec countryside to write and record 2020’s sophomore album, Lighter Fluid. The album featured material anchored around classic and beloved, power chord riffage and classic psych rock vibes that channeled the likes of AC/DC, White Mystery, The White Stripes and on and on. Throughout their run together, they’ve also collaborated with a handful of boundary-pushing acts across the province, including ALIAS, Larynx and others. But this year, sees the Montréal-based duo in a period of reinvention: They founded their own label Noble Shit Records, which will release their future releases, including their forthcoming four-song EP, Pleasure Doing Business — and guarantee them much more creative freedom. Slated for an April 19, 2024 release, the entirely self-produced effort will feature the duo’s latest single “Always on the Run,” a collaboration with fellow Montréal-based rock outfit Les Shirley — Raphaëlle Chouinard, Lisandre Bourdages and Sarah Dion. “Always on the Run” further cements Les Deuxluxes’ swaggering hook-driven, barroom blues take on psych rock — but the addition of Les Shirley add a bit of playful pop-leaning muscle to the proceedings.

Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (696) : Sun 11th Feb 2024
I had to get a taxi to work this morning because of the bike being in need of a new chain and the mechanic not being able to put a new one on until next week. I'll be honest it was nice to arrive to work and not have to run my hands under hot water due to my shitty bike gloves. On my lunch break I looked around online to see if there were any reasonably priced driving instructors that I could book some lessons with and fucking hell it was tricky as most of them require you to book at least two hour lessons and some of them even require you to make yourself available and pay up front for an intense 10 week course which isn't what I'm looking for. I just want a few refresher lessons to see if it changes my mind about driving a car and to see if I can still do it. What I may do is get an automatic car and use that to get to and from work until I can get through my actual motorbike test and then I'll get a proper motorbike with parts that aren't made in a warehouse in China out of old discarded chopsticks and bat vomit. While on my lunch break I saw that AC/DC have announced a show in July which excited me because obviously I would love to see these legends of rock like at Wembley but also it means there's another big kick in the bollocks to my bank account. I've already got Jane's Addiction, my wing walking experience and my family holiday to Greece to save up for and now this? I actually removed AC/DC from my band bucket list a while back because I figured they would stop touring for good after Malcom Young died but it turns out his death did not impact the other band members love of money. At the team meeting later in the day I was told that I still had 30 hours (3 days) of carryover leave from last year that I needed to use by the end of March or it would disappear forever like Justin Lee Collins. I was hoping to put these 30 hours towards the holiday to Greece but it looks like I can't do that so instead I decided to stick this holiday in for the end of March. I briefly considered the possibility of another trip to Gran Canaria but I decided against it as winter is nearly over and it hasn't been nearly as bad as it usually is. I'll reserve my trips to Gran Canaria for January and possibly the start of Autumn if the summer has been shit. Instead of travelling I'll use my ten days off to try to get into shape and finish the Edgar books.

The New Roses
Tumblr media
Former Jane’s Addiction Bassist Chris Chaney Joins AC/DC for 2024 European Tour
Former Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney is the newest member of AC/DC.
The band tapped the musician “to carry the torch for Cliff” Williams, who has retired.
Chaney will anchor the rhythm section with new drummer Matt Laug - who joined AC/DC at 2023’s Power Trip - on the group’s European tour, its first since 2016.
The 21-date trek runs May to August.
“We can’t wait to see you all out there,” the band said.
Lead guitarist Angus Young is the only original member left in AC/DC, which also includes longtime singer Brian Johnson and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young.
