(Ants Talk) Ruth Coker Burks cared for hundreds of dying people, many of them gay men who had been abandoned by their families. She buried more than three dozen of them herself, after their families refused to claim their bodies.

(Ants Talk) It was 1984 when Ruth Coker Burks​ was 25 and helping a friend who was going through cancer treatment. On one of these visits she found herself in a hospital hallway and saw a big red bag over a door. She noticed nurses drawing straws on who would enter that room.  Ruth Coker Burks is an icon in the gay community and helped over a thousand people deal with the devastating effects of AIDS.
