Perchance do you have any headcanons to share about Hunk 👉👈? We really didn't get enough of him in canon

we truly didn't!!!!! sorry i made you wait, but i really wanted to post these on his birthday 🥰💐💛🍰💝🌷🌻❣🌈

on their first night as roommates, lance walked into their garrison dorm room with a weird green face mask, and hunk (who just came in minutes ago and did not get to meet him yet) panicked, shrieked, and then hit him on the head with a pillow. he still apologises to this day

shiro: (giving an inspiring speech)

hunk: isn’t that from naruto

he will absolutely tell you that your plan is dumb as shit, but he'll do it while packing an emergency backpack and getting ready to follow you

hunk: no offence, buddy, but that sounds like a bad idea

keith: you don’t have to come with me

hunk, already putting on his suit: no no i’m gonna

he can watch most horror movies with a straight face because he usually finds them predictable; however he WILL start crying if someone on a baking show forgets to grease their pan or has their cake fall over

when he found out that shiro was born on a leap year, he made him a personalised “baby on board” magnet to put on the black lion

pidge: if you had to make someone watch three movies to really get to know you as a person, which three would you pick?

hunk, without hesitation: ratatouille, pride and prejudice 2005, and then ratatouille again except this time i say all the lines in time with the characters

whenever someone asks baby hunk what he wants to be when he grows up, he responds with “an engineer and a dog owner”

lance: okay everyone, mission 'prank keith' is a go. hunk, any ideas?

hunk: uh. what if we tell him we’ll bake him peanut butter cookies, but then we do chocolate chip instead

lance: idea rejected, but i love you

aliens routinely assume that hunk would be the easiest to trick because he’s known as the kindest, and the team really enjoys watching them have an 'oh shit' moment once hunk takes literally two minutes to figure them out

hunk was a huge part of lance’s bi awakening, and lance is not at all ashamed to admit this to anyone who will listen.... which is understandable

lance, late to their usual training session at the garrison: hey man, sorry i’m-

hunk, pushing his bangs out of his face: oh hi lance :-)

lance: oh ok WOW. funny how i suddenly have NO idea what the fuck i was going to say

also, lance totally convinces allura that people on earth call handsome men “hunks” solely due to hunk’s impact, which she readily believes. her lack of hesitance is, again, understandable

hunk: man, i just love you guys

matt: aw! we love you too, hunk

hunk: oh well that's awkward. i was talking to the mice

he responds to all group chat dumbassery with a text that reads "(uncaramelises your onions)"

allura always takes him to diplomatic meetings with her because he’s just such a natural!!! ...and also because they’re both incredibly noisy. but listen! sometimes gossiping about countess grixane’s love life is just so much more fun than boring diplomacy stuff ok

little hunk: (turns the family computer off and then back on again)

hunk’s mom: oh wow....our baby boy....an engineer...

he really likes hanging out with coran!! the man is basically a walking encyclopedia on altean culture (& most other alien cultures, really) AND also has so many wacky mechanical trinkets that hunk loves messing around with

he often talks to himself while cooking, pretending that he’s on his own culinary show. sometimes lance sits on the counter and acts as a laughing track.

hunk, making oatmeal at 7pm: i just think it’s so raw and real and visceral and it’s what we need right now

keith, who walked in to grab a glass of water: ....bet

he has a shirt that says 'i brought a hug to a knife fight' & then underneath that, in much smaller font: 'and also this huge fucking gun'

Keithtober day 10: books

Keith discovered early on books were an easy escape. Foster families, no matter how short  the stay, were happy to leave him alone if he were doing something which could be considered scholarly, and teachers at various schools were always impressed by his reading level. 

He could hide away at the back of classes, in libraries and cold, lonely rooms, open up a volume and disappear. Other kids were less inclined to steal books, and damaging them always got them in trouble, so they were relatively safe from harm. 

With a book, he could live someone else's happiness, smile for them when he couldn’t for himself. He could watch someone with greater troubles than he conquer them, and give himself the push to go through one more day. He could escape completely into fantasy and magic, live in a world so impossible it seemed real. 

He could fall in love with dashing heroes, feel his heart race at words he imagined were directed at him through the pages, imagine he too, would eventually find a man who would care just as much for him. 

Keith loves books, and really is suffering from the lack of them in space. Pidge and Hunk are only interested in technology texts, which he’s tried to read in desperation but they don’t hit the spot. Shiro’s concentration isn’t what it used to be, so he prefers to relax watching things rather than reading. Allura’s recommended several Altean novels, but their translation system doesn’t seem to work fully, for they descend into gibberish. 

Coran gave him a thirty minute rant about the superiority and traditions of oral storytelling. Which was fascinating (if somewhat long winded), but also didn’t solve his problem. Lance had walked in half way through, and walked out after ten minutes with a haunted look on his face, and Keith hasn’t bothered asking Lance about books after that. 

It’s been months and, although they are starting to get the hang on their new bonds, roles and responsibilities as defenders of the universe, Keith is craving escapism. So on every planet, he goes hunting for books, anything that may be vaguely readable, and subtly asks Allura if they’ll be stopping at a Space Mall anytime soon. 

It’s after an unsuccessful trip around the market stalls of Fluddherin, that Keith returns to the castleship to find the rest of the team crowding around Lance. He’s grinning, holding onto a small hexagonal box made of what looks like wood, golden symbols shining through. The top half includes a panel which looks like a keypad, small and golden in the same way as the symbols. 

“Please let me study it! I won’t use it, I swear,” Pidge moans, but Lance holds it aloft, above their head. 

“Nope, it’s my magical wish box!” 

Keith frowns. “Magical wish box?” he asks. 

Allura sighs heavily. “It’s a not a magical wish box. It’s just a replicating device. If programmed directly, it can recreate any object it can find in the galaxy. But it can only be used three times.” 

“It’s an important tool Lance, we should think carefully about using it,” Shiro adds. 

Lance pouts, and Keith tries not to think of how cute he looks. “I won it though, shouldn’t I at least get one thing?” 

Keith listens vaguely to Lance bartering with Shiro as they enter, the sounds soothing in his ear. He likes that they both get along so well, his brother and his crush, even if it’s just his mind wanting to draw the connections between him and Lance, hoping that someday soon he’ll find the way to tell him how he feels. 

Keith becomes absorbed in the rest of the day’s activities, so is surprised when there’s a knock on his door later that evening. Even more so when he opens it to find Lance there. Before he can even ask, Lance smiles widely,  and brings his hands from where they are hidden behind it back, producing a book. 

It’s cover is dark red and blank, so Keith just stares at it, perplexed. 

“You should open it,” Lance says, smile still in place, nudging the book towards him. 

So carefully, Keith takes it. The cover feels strange, almost rough and patterned under his fingertips, not the same type of paper he is used to. Ever so carefully, he folds open the cover. 

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.’ 

Keith snaps the book shut, and stares at Lance in absolute disbelief. 

“Pride and Prejudice,” he says, numbly and with a quivering tone. 

“One of your favourites, I think? I remember you mentioned it to Coran. I know you’ve been looking for books, and Shiro said we could only use the magic box once so...well, the rest of us already have something from home, and I don’t know enough about books to get you a new one so-”

Lance doesn’t finish speaking, for Keith steps forward and kisses him. At a bad angle, almost missing his mouth mid sentence, but still, it’s a kiss. And maybe, this has always been the best way to express his feelings, he realises as Lance’s cheeks turn red. For although Keith loves words, he’s never really been one to rely on them. 

Lance clears his throat. “M-maybe you can tell me why you like it so much. Later,” he adds, then bends forward a little. 

“Later?” Keith questions, although he’s smiling widely now, knowing where this is going. 

“Yeah. I think for now, I’d like to kiss you some more,” Lance says, just a breath away from the action. 

And Keith agrees with a second kiss, learning in that moment, that books can be something other than an escape. 

They can be a beginning.

Klance Pride and Prejudice AU/Altean Lance

Characters

Takes place in Voltron, a fictitious country of lots of different races of people.

Lance—Altean: Age 21. Eldest son of Mr. Castro. While his father is a well-respected gentleman, his family isn’t exactly part of the upper elite. Still, that doesn’t stop Lance from practicing disciplines he should really have no business being a part of, such as sword fighting and studying too many academic books that are above his station. As the eldest, it’s expected that he’ll marry someone at his own station or below, before inheriting his father’s estate. Lance dreams of bigger things, but alas, he’s oftentimes pigeonholed. It’s his cousin, whose mother married well, that basically exposes him to things he wouldn’t normally have been privy to. He wanted to enlist--to do his part to fight the Infected, but his father forbid it as his position as the son to inherit was too valuable. Ran off to the war as a teenager and was dragged back by his father. 

Allura—Altean: Age 23. Lance’s cousin and close friend. Her mother married Lord Alfor. It was a match that was extremely frowned upon at the time, as her mother—Lance’s father’s younger sister—is of a station quite below Alfor. Yet he was in possession of his own inheritance and so could basically do as he pleased, including marrying for love. Thus, Allura. Her father’s estate exists near to Lance’s father’s, so they spent a majority of their childhood growing up together. Despite being a woman, Allura showed considerable flare from a young age, both academically and physically. While women don’t generally train in combat, Alfor allowed her to train in staff combat (seemed less harmful to her expected constitution than a blade). But in Alfor giving her lead there, she was given lead in other areas, making her a force to be reckoned with in many ways. Still, as a woman, she is not legally allowed to inherit her father’s estate, thus she must find a suitable husband. A fact that is of a constant irritation to her. Having had no sons, her mother and father have no children to legally leave the family estate to. 

Hunk—Human: Age 21. Lance’s best friend. He’s a scholar at a university in the city. As a human, he’s not regulated by the codes of conduct pertaining to Altean and Galra lifestyles. As a foreigner, he was welcomed into Lance’s home on scholarship to a university in the city (the same university Lance attends), so he stays in the city during school and with Lance’s family during any off periods. Unlike Lance, he doesn’t have to worry about estates and such things, so he’s “free” in Lance’s eyes. He is rather infatuated with one of the maids that works for Allura’s family—a balmera—but a relationship between them would be taboo due to Hunk being a human—a race that may be foreign, but is very well-respected—and she is a balmera, a race of the lower classes. This seems to bother Hunk a lot less than it should, or so Lance tells him, as humans seem to have little regard for the social expectations in Voltron. It’s not legal for balmerans to marry outside their own race, let alone to a race of higher class, like a human, altean, or galra.

Shiro—Human: Age 29. Shiro is a well-respected general in the war against the Infected. After an accident that left him missing an arm, he retired to the estate where his half-brother lives, mostly because Keith is the only family he has. Considered newer money. His reputation gets him extremely far, as does his affiliation with Keith. As a human and a foreigner, he isn’t judged by such things as bloodlines and social rank either. Considered a very eligible match for many, being a rich human. But not suitable for girls of noble rank, like Allura, who are expected to make matches that will further their family’s good names. He eventually decides to take an estate for the summer nearby to Lance’s family’s estate. Keith tries to convince him out of it, but Shiro wants to get to know the locals.

Keith—Half human/half galra: Age 22. Keith’s father was first married to a woman in the home of humans across the sea, resulting in Shiro, but she died. The two made their way across the sea, whereupon Keith’s father, who was also a well-respected general against the Infected, met and married Keith’s mother, who was the daughter of a very well-endowed lord. Keith and Acxa were the result of that marriage and he and Shiro basically grew up together. When Keith’s uncle was killed, it left Keith—as the only male heir in the family—to inherit their family’s generous estate. Both his parents eventually died as well (or maybe just his father? Might leave Krolia alive), leaving him in the care of his grandfather before he followed Shiro into the military, despite the fact that Keith’s grandfather was righteously pissed that Keith would do something so reckless and risky. Still, he returned from the battlefront once his grandfather died and inherited the estate, leaving him as one of the most eligible bachelors in the country. Doesn’t make him any pleasanter to be around, however.

Matt—Half human/half altean: Age 27. Shiro’s best friend from the military. Doesn’t have much in the way of an inheritance despite being considered a gentleman, but very smart and generally good to have around. Agrees to come stay with Shiro in his new estate, as Shiro insists that it’s far too big for one man alone (or two, since Keith has a habit of staying there sometimes).

Pidge—Half human/half altean: Age 19. Matt’s younger sister. Goes with him to stay at Shiro’s. She knows Matt hopes she’ll meet someone and be whisked off her feet into a good marriage, but Pidge has absolutely no interest in marriage at all. Still, she tries to make good of the experience, spending a generous chunk of her time walking around the nearby areas and reading a lot of books. Which is how she meets Lance and Hunk. They all become fast friends despite the fact that Pidge is also pretty good friends with Keith, who Lance has come to find quite detestable.

Lotor—Half galra/half altean: Age 25. Son of Lord Zarkon, who has an estate far off somewhere else. He comes to spend the summer with Allura’s family as punishment for something, so he’s rather unpleasant all around and views everyone in the town and surrounding areas as country bumpkins and rather simple, aside from Allura. He and Allura have known each other for quite some time, as their fathers are old friends, and while Lotor has feelings for her and is confident he can win her affection, he’s somewhat blindsided when she takes a liking to some human general that’s recently moved into town. He’s even more ticked when he realizes that this general is Keith’s brother. Lotor and Keith have a history, one that relates to their time serving in the military and that leaves Keith quite unwilling to remain in Lotor’s presence. Maybe’s it’s Lotor’s fault Shiro almost died, but Shiro and no one else knows that but Keith. Also, Lotor played Keith’s sister.  

Acxa—Half human/half galra: Age 22. Keith’s twin sister. Became quite infatuated with Lotor a few summers back and has remained rather scarred by the incident despite how she hides it. She was considered a good match for anyone and so it wasn’t so surprising when Lotor took to her, but it was only to get at Keith, who Lotor hates. Acxa despises that she fell for him, and Keith kind of hates that he failed to protect his sister, despite how she feels she needed no protection from him. She is a bit of a snob though, if only because—like Keith—she doesn’t really relate well to strangers.

Ezor—Half galra/half lower class: Age 20. Works for Keith. Acxa’s best friend. Her existence at all is quite scandalous and people kind of don’t understand why Keith keeps her on as one of Acxa’s maids, but Krolia took pity on the girl a long time ago, thus resulting in the close friendship between she and Acxa. Keith keeps her around despite finding her extremely annoying. She’s considered a “maid,” but really she just hangs around and mooches off Keith, doing very little aside from keeping Acxa company.

Zethrid—Half galra/half lower class: Age 21. Another person Keith keeps on despite it being quite scandalous. Probably another pity case of Krolia’s. She’s tasked with protecting Acxa and the estate, even though she basically failed when it came to Lotor and Acxa (Keith was not pleased). At least she works though, unlike Ezor. Gender discrimination doesn’t exist within the lower classes, thus Zethrid can do more masculine work.  

Narti—Half galra/half lower class: Yet another of Krolia’s pity cases that had once guarded the estate when Keith was away. She was mysteriously murdered around the same time Lotor tried to trick to Acxa into running off with him. 

And that’s all I got so far. Maybe I’ll do a story outline, we’ll see.

VLD Analysis: Keith in The Feud

I know this scene has been analysed to death, but I just wanted to write a summary of my thoughts on it.

As well as talking about Keith in S7E4, I'm also going to analyse his character in general in season 7 (in relation to klance). And if you're wondering, yes I do think klance is endgame.

Lance's reason for choosing Keith was very obviously sweet and romantic, so there's no need to do any analysing there. In fact, Lance's character is generally easy to read. Keith, however, is always more tricky to understand due to the fact that he communicates through actions and struggles with social cues. We even saw this in his scene with Hunk; although he ended up delivering an excellent pep talk, at the beginning of the scene he folded his arms, had a grumpy expression and said he's not good with talking to people.

So about this scene in The Feud (the scene where he chooses Lance to escape)- a key thing which I haven't seen anyone mention is that he's looking at Bob when he delivers his answer.

Every other character, when explaining their choice, looks directly ahead, looks at the person they chose, or a combination of both. Keith is the only character to look Bob in the eyes when giving his answers.

This is important because if Keith was looking at LANCE with that irritated/grumpy expression, it would come off as mean, as if he was annoyed at Lance. But because he looks at Bob, it makes me think he was more annoyed that he was being forced to justify his choice- part of his annoyance, if not all of it, is directed at Bob. This is supported by his line at the end of episode about Bob- 'the guy was kind of a jerk though, right?'. Makes sense he'd look like this at a guy he thinks is a jerk.

Another reason why Keith looking at Bob is important is that it shows he felt embarrassed and uncomfortable enough to avoid eye contact with Lance. This ties in with another way his body language differs from everyone else's; every other character stands with their arms by their sides, showing they're relaxed (Lance slumps over the podium, but his body language is still relaxed and open). Keith stands upright with his arms folded across his chest, creating a barrier, and not looking at the person he's talking about. This SCREAMS insecurity, embarrassment and discomfort, not anger or annoyance.

I do think Keith was annoyed by how Lance got so many answers wrong, which explains the grumpy expression (old married couple, anyone?). But his reason for picking Lance was a lie, not because he was annoyed. It's canon that Keith finds Lance endearing. Just look at his face here:

He made this face when Lance said 'I'm not a goofball, I'm like the cool, ninja sharpshooter' to which Keith responded with 'are you joking?'. This whole exchange including the facial expression shows that Keith DOES think Lance is a goofball, but he's fond of him for it.

I won't lie, I do think part of the reason they had Keith answer that way in The Feud was because if he said something nice about Lance, it would be far too obvious klance is endgame. So instead, they played into Keith's character flaws and insecurities. They're dragging out this miscommunciation and angst in their relationship for as long as possible.

Now let's talk about Keith in season 7 as a whole. I find the klance dynamic in this season very interesting.

First of all, Keith is still pining. A lot of people think pining Keith is gone, but he isn't. Season 7 was just action packed, and Keith is able to put his feelings aside to concentrate on the mission- similar to how Lance and Keith used to put their rivalry aside when they had to work together.

Keith is pining because he chose Lance and lied about his answer, formed the wings of Voltron with Lance, didn't snap at Lance when when he went space mad and yelled for Lance twice when Red didn't respond to him.

The reason their relationship felt tense is because Keith is trying to reject Lance before Lance can reject him.

We've all agreed that Keith got a crush on Lance after the bonding moment and fell deeper for him around season 3, although it's hard to tell when those feelings became love.

Keith is fully aware of Lance's feelings for Allura. A lot of people forget that in the bedroom scene, Lance literally told Keith he doesn't want to take Blue away from her- that would definitely have assured Keith that Lance has feelings for her, strong feelings. Also, Keith saw Lance and Allura standing together when he called the castle in season 6 (it's possible he also saw their hug, or at least saw them pulling apart). It's been suggested that the animators had Keith interrupt the hug to foreshadow Lance moving on to him, but in hindsight I think it was so Keith would see that they were in the middle of an intimate moment and become jealous.

Also, Keith is more insecure than people give him credit for. It's evident in his scene with Hunk that he doesn't think he's good at talking with people, and he IS socially awkward. Now think about Lance. Lance is outgoing, sociable and great at connecting with people. If you were in Keith's shoes, you wouldn't think you have a chance with Lance. Not in a million years.

Keith has technically been rejected by Lance twice. First, when Lance pretended to forget the bonding moment, making Keith think the moment wasn't important to Lance. Second, when Keith said 'must really be bothering you if you're coming to talk to me', to which Lance replied 'you're the leader now, right?'. This one is more subtle, but Lance essentially just told Keith 'no, we don't have a connection. I'm just coming to you because you're the leader and it's your job'.

Again, miscommunication.

Basically, in season 7 it's clear that Keith is trying to distance himself from Lance emotionally. He has his walls up. Ultimately, in season 8, it won't work and he'll be forced to confess or something because he loves Lance too much. (Pride and Prejudice, anyone?)

In S1-S3, Keith was very open (well, as open as Keith gets) about his affection for Lance whereas Lance hid his affection for Keith because he didn't understand it. In S6-S7, Lance is being open about his affection because after the S5/S6 love triangle and being seperated from Keith, he has a better understanding of what it is to like someone. Keith is now hiding his affection to protect himself from hurt.

As things stand in season 7, it's hard to imagine Keith and Lance as a canon couple. But that's the whole point. For an endgame couple to be successful, there has to have been rough patches in their relationship, there has to have been miscommunication and arguments.

If (hopefully when) Keith and Lance get together in the finale, it will be incredibly satisfying. Why? Because we've seen them argue with each other, hurt each other's feelings, be seperated from each other, see each other at their worst points and have near death experiences. And after all that, if they choose to be together, it will be powerful and will really assure the viewer that their relationship is strong and will last forever.

Season 5, wow

This season.... completely blew away ALL of my expectations

As with most retrospectives, Spoilers ensue. However, i REALLY recommend watching this season. 

In the most spoiler-less way possible, this season focuses on the theme of family and is very action-orientated.

Firstly, I’m glad to see that I’m right about the Altean markings glowing

(Although granted, canonically her’s glow slightly more blue)

Secondly, all of you judging @smolsarcasticraspberry for putting forward the clone! Shiro theory, wow how does it feel to be wrong, like so wrong now?

Thirdly, Honerva. My HeArtttt- she’s like those overprotective mums who put monitors everywhere to look at their children.

On a serious note, i really loved this season. The healthy balance between humour, drama and seriousness does give the season a more complete feel. They managed to fit in character building (Kuron, Lance, Lotor, Haggar), worldbuilding (the world of the galra, Altea, etc) and make the entire season themed on family ( the slow breaking down of the Voltron team, the Holts being fully reunited, Lotor and his rejection of his family, Allura’s pining to act like her family, Honerva/Haggar coming to terms with the state of her family and her wishing to be with her son, and the scene where we see the team give messages to their families).

Anywho, fourthly, Clone! Shiro.... Kuron I didn’t expect that. I have so many questions- are his eyes cameras? How does his skin feel if he’s a clone? Is he made out of resin or plastic or some galactic material?

Fifthly, Lotor. Oh. my. lord.

I mean I like him much better now, but there’s something off, although I didn’t expect him to be the one to fully finish off Zarkon- that came out of the blue.

Honestly, I do like the fact that the crew decided to fully emphasise the extent of Lotor being Allura’s foil. We clearly see this in the first few episodes ( we see this visually, by the way that Allura looks clearly enraged at Lotor, while he keeps a cool and collected expression) and we are constantly reminded of this whenever Lotor mentions the relationship that his and Allura’s fathers held, while Allura doesn’t really seem to mind it all too much, suggesting that Lotor does like to relate to his peers in order to get close to them ( if this is true, we will see this come to a turning point in S6, if Lotor indeed has other plans, wherein he uses his closeness towards his prey as their weakness). Most notably, we see this in the White Lion scene, where we are shown that despite Lotor and Allura’s equal footing in terms of status and people that they have lost, the way in which Lotor fights (ie victory or death) differs significantly from Allura’s (peace first, then attack). If you want a really cool introspective on Lotor’s behaviour, Please read this by @radioactivesupersonic . They explain what I’m trying to explain 10 x better. 

Also, the hints of shipping are not really hints anymore. I mean

But I think there’s a catch... my shallura ass won’t quit. I can’t really see them having a proper full-on romantic relationship, mostly because of them being each other’s foil, and by the suspicious nature of Lotor. That said, it is quite a sweet and interesting relationship, kinda reminds me of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Wickham’s relationship in Pride and Prejudice and this song:

Lance- he has become what I’ve always wanted him to be: a true leader who doesn’t fall under the shadow of Shiro and Keith

Pidge- I loved her moments of both humour and seriousness- her bursts of anger really did make this season.

Hunk- he’s Hunk... need I say more? He is my love

Slow burn Klance road trip in which the Paladins are (mostly) university students that come together to start a band and go on tour around Texas pretty much as an excuse to put them into humorous/interesting situations and let me strut some Texas pride while making fun of my home state which just so happens to be Keith’s as well. There’s also some not funny issues such as prejudice and homophobia thrown in for depth and realism but I’m trying for a balance between fluff, humor, and seriousness.

Also, the world needs more Rodeo Keith.

  This is a teaser for a much longer fic/series that I’m thinking about writing. A/N: And here’s the seond part to this. Writing this fanfic has been so draining but also so fulfilling, I honestly don’t understand myself at times. Thank you for reading it and enjoy! <3 P.S. Please listen to this if you want your heart to die for real.

On the day of the funeral, Allura is in her garden.

The house is too quiet  and dull and while being in the garden doesn’t really help, at least she doesn’t feel like she’s suffocating. Inside the memories of all she’s lost haunts her every step, ghosts of laughs and happy voices maker her want to scream and there’s not a single thing that doesn’t hold a shadow of her family.

Outside is no better, after all they’ve lived here all her life so all the things that make her sick to the stomach inside have the same effect on her in the garden.

But the warm sunlight feels good on her skin and the sound of spring around her lets her pretend for a couple of seconds that she’s still alive. She breathes in those few moments but her lungs still don’t feel full enough.

She wonders if they’ll be full enough ever again.

“Allura,” Coran calls her kindly from the balcony. “I’m leaving.”

She doesn’t turn to look at him. She doesn’t move at all. She just stands there looking at the small fire in front of her with glassy eyes.

Coran sighs and fights the impulse to go stand by her side. She had been firm earlier when she said that she wanted to be alone and Coran will respect her wish for now.

Before he leaves, he looks one last time at the same thing Allura was watching: the nightdress she wore that night she held her brother’s body in her arms burning.

She’s so close to it that the smell of dried blood burning make her turn around and vomit. A few of her maids run to her side to help her but she stops them. She just wants to be alone to gather her thoughts and realize what she just lost because of her selfishness. She wants to be alone to think about her brother.

When she’s not gasping for air anymore, she wipes her wet cheeks and turns to look once again at the fire, following with her eyes the smoke’s trail towards the clear sky.

She doesn’t know how long she stays there but when she looks back down the fire died out. All that’s left is a handful of dark ashes and a few small ambers, too stubborn to fade away.

Allura’s never been a religious person. She’s seen too many tragedies in her life to still believe that God exists. But for the first time in ages she does something she never thought that she’d do again.

She prays.

She pray for her parents, for Lance, for Keith and Shiro. And, even though she knows she doesn’t deserve it, she prays for forgiveness too.

A soft and sweet wind blows the thread of smoke in her face and the ashes travel to her feet. She ignores them, though, for the familiar feeling of hands cupping her face and something bumping against her forehead. It’s nothing more than a whisper, lost as soon as it came, but

she knows what- who it was.

She knows it was Lance’s way of telling her that he forgave her and that he doesn’t blame her; that he’ll be with her at every step and that he loves her.

When she opens her eyes, she barely notices the darkness that fell around her or the tears that were falling on her cheeks.

Shiro’s eyes are on Keith’s face.

He can hear the sound of grieving around him but it’s sort of muffled. He doesn’t even feel like he’s actually here.

His brother lies in one of the two coffins while the other one is occupied by Allura’s brother –Lance! he scolds himself. Both of them look more like they’re sleeping rather than dead and that’s because despite the white faces and blue lips they seem peaceful. As if the fact that death took both of them doesn’t matter since they are finally together.

His eyes linger on Lance. A boy that used to be nothing for him became now the boy Keith gave up everything for; a boy that represented an inconvenience for him became now the boy that made Shiro’s little brother happier; a boy that he used to hate but with whom Keith fell in love.

Now Lance is a boy that loved Shiro’s baby brother so much that he chose death instead of living without Keith. They both chose death and Shiro knows that their decision is his fault. Maybe if he had been more understanding with Keith they wouldn’t be crying over a senseless tragedy.

He let himself be influenced by their parents prejudice and the hate grew over the years so much that it became a part of him, he doesn’t know how to be without it burning inside of him. But if you’d ask him why he hates Lance’s family so much, he wouldn’t be able to give you an answer.

Does anyone even remember what started this conflict between them? Or did they continue just in spite? Because of the pride of his and Allura’s family the city has been a spectator to so many tragedies for years, just because they could and because they wanted to. But this is going to be the last one. Shiro’ll make sure of it.

He clenches his fists at his side when he feels for the first time an anger that he thought he left behind him. This funeral could’ve been avoided if only the egoism hadn’t been so big. Keith and Lance would still be alive and happy. He’d still have his little brother by his side and Allura would still have the only family she had left.

This thought makes him suck through clenched teeth a long breath. Allura is all alone now, she has nothing and no one. Did she even come to the funeral? He looks up and searches the sea of people that are crying as the two coffins are slowly lowered in the cold unforgiving ground. He sees Hunk, Pidge and Allura’s adviser but she’s nowhere to be seen. Is she okay?

There are so many people that surround him looking actually sad and regretful but Shiro can’t bring himself to believe any of them. It’s their fault if they’re all here today and he’ll never forgive any of these people. It’s because of them that they are watching two brilliant boys being put in their graves way too early.

Despite his anger, he stays at the funeral until the end. He feels like he has to do it. For himself. For his brother. For Lance and Allura.

When he finally gets home the sun is setting but it disappears without painting the sky in its usual beautiful colors. One moment the sky is bright and clear and the next it’s dark, not even a single star sparkling. The moon also doesn’t want to get out from behind the clouds.

He goes to bed feeling numb, still not being able to believe that this is all real, and he falls asleep with a promise in the back of his mind: tomorrow.

Tomorrow he’ll go visit Allura and ask for her forgiveness with head lowered and on his knees.

Tomorrow Allura will cup his face in her hands, lifting it up and she’ll ask for his forgiveness too.

Tomorrow Shiro will finally let reality hit him and he’ll grieve his loss in Allura’s arms.

Tomorrow they won’t fall in love but it will be the beginning.
