Benchmark Tech Notes
Running the Benchmark
If your Benchmark isn't opening, it's an issue with the executable file, and something not completing properly on either download, or extracting the Zip file. The Benchmark is designed to run and give you scores for your potato computer, I promise.

I actually saved my Benchmark to my external drive, and it still pulls and saves data and runs as it should. Make sure you allowed the download to complete before extracting the zip.
Resolution
Check your Settings; in Display, it may be defaulting your monitor Resolution to something than you might otherwise use if you aren't on standard 1920x1080.
To check your monitor Resolution, minimize everything on your screen and right click anywhere on your Desktop. Go to Display Settings and scroll down to find Resolution and what it's set at.

You can set the Graphic Settings 1 tab to Maximum, or to Import your game settings. Display Settings tab is where you set it to be Windowed, Bordered, or Full Screen, as well as select Resolution to match your monitor in the dropdown (or customize it if needed). I speak on Resolution as some folks in my FC noted it changed how their characters looked.
The Other tab in Settings is where you can change the text output, or even check a box to disable the logo and score; I do this on subsequent plays, once I have my scores at various settings, to get the clean screenshots.
@calico-heart has a post about fixing graphics settings, with screenshots of the settings tab. Basically, change graphics upscaling from AMD to NVIDIA, and/or uncheck Enable Dynamic Resolution. Also check the Framerate Threshold dropdown.

The benchmark auto-saves 5 screens each playthrough. In the Benchmark folder there is a Screenshots folder to find the auto-images taken of your characters.

Character Appearance
If you want to get your current in game appearance, including non-standard hairstyles, make sure to load up the live game, right click and "Save Character Settings."
Then go to Documents/My Games/Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (this is the default in Windows 10 so mileage varies). The file will have the date you last updated their settings and be named FFXIV_CHARA_01.dat (or however many saves you have/made).
Grab those newly updated DAT files for your character(s) and copy them, then in the same base folder, go to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Benchmark).
Paste the copied DAT files in there, and rename to FFXIV_CHARA_BENCH01.dat (the number doesn't matter, and you may have more).
When running Benchmark Character Creation, use the dropdown menu.

If you do Create a Custom Character and Load Appearance Data, it will give you default hairstyles again. Meteor's Dawntrail hairstyle is a new default.
In Char Gen I am finding that a very pale hrothgal reflects the green scenery around her, giving her white skin/fur a green tinge. The other zones do not have this problem, or at least not to the same degree.
They added a Midday vs Evening setting in outdoor areas as well to test lighting. The lighting in the Gridanian innroom is better; not as bright as outdoors, to be expected, but not completely useless.

Remember we're getting a free fantasia with the expansion, so some tweaking may be needed; Iyna I felt like I needed to adjust her jaw. Other colors--skin, hair, eyes, tattoos, etc--are showing differently in the various kinds of lighting.
Uncertain if the limit on hairstyles for the Hrothgals so far is just a Benchmark thing; they do have set styles for different head options. Everyone gets Meteor's hair though, so it may be a temporary/Benchmark limit. But which clan and face you choose drastically alters what hair and facial feature options you have access to.
Check your settings, tweak them a bit, play around with chargen, and remember this is still a Benchmark; they always strike me as a little less polished than the finished game, but so far I'm actually pretty pleased with having defined fingers and toes, the irises in the eyes, scars looking cut into the skin, and other improvements.

I've seen a lot of posts and comments and videos and what have you dunking on Sony for the absurd price point of the PS5 pro and how the screencaps of pro vs regular look exactly the same and, yeah, it's fun to dunk on a corporation for being obviously bad and dumb. People are like filling buckets of popcorn to watch the pro crash and burn like it's the second coming of Morbius, but, like, not to rain on the parade but sadly I don't think the PS5 pro failing would even matter.
Nintendo hasn't been competing in the AAA gaming space since the Wii, and XBox is actively collapsing - with the mid gen update that the PS5 pro was supposed to compete against being cancelled outright. Even PC isn't meaningfully holding Sony in check right now - between Intel's ongoing cpu disaster, AMD's incredibly disappointing new offerings, NVIDIA's own price gouging and hard pivot into AI, and everything Microsoft's been doing to Windows, now isn't exactly a great time to buy a new gaming PC. The main alternative for gamers who want a AAA experience but can't stomach the PS5 pro's price is the original model PS5.
Like, seriously, I've seen more than one person post something like 'at that price I'll just buy a regular ps5' as though giving Sony half a grand was somehow a bad for them.
Sony can eat the ill will now since they won this gen already and are only really competing with themselves at this point, and an overpriced PS5 pro - even if it fails - still primes customers to expect and accept a higher price for the PS6 than they otherwise would have.
Best case for Sony (ie the worst case) is that gamers get over the sticker shock and buy the PS5 pro anyway when GTA comes out, in which case they'll do the hard work of brainwashing themselves into accepting $700 for a console, priming themselves to pay even more for the PS6 a couple years later without all the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
The more likely scenario is that the market rejects the PS5 pro, but that's no big loss for Sony. The dev cost for the pro was already sunk and, again, at this point they're really only competing with themselves. If that happens, Sony can target a slightly lower but still absurd $600 or even $650 price point for the PS6 and start the next console gen with a mountain of good will for 'listening to consumers' and 'lowering prices', despite the fact that in a parallel universe where the pro had never released people would be nearly as angry at a $600 PS6 as they are right now at a $700 PS5 pro.

Tech friends, I need your help.
I'm choosing between 2 laptops to buy. We'll call them laptop 1 and 2, for the sake of simplicity. (I'm in no hurry to buy one, mine works... just fine... but not great. It struggles when I have too many tabs open in Chrome, and is lagging as I write this post with literally only Discord open in the background. I'm sure you can imagine how it handles any heavier program. Yes I made a mistake by cheaping out when I could afford better, yes I am aware of this, yes I regret it deeply, let's move on.)
Laptop 1 is about 100 dollars/euros/1000 SEK cheaper.
They both have OLED screens with approximately the screen resolution: laptop 1 has a 15.6" display with 2880 x 1620 resolution (16:9) and laptop 2 has a 14" display with 2880 x 1800 resolution (16:10). My current laptop has a 14" display with 1920 x 1080 resolution (16:9) so either way it's a pretty big upgrade. In terms of size alone, I prefer the 15.6". (Laptop 1 weighs 1.8kg and laptop 2 weighs 1.45kg, which is not enough of a difference that it really matters to me.)
Laptop 1 has a higher refresh rate (120Hz vs 90Hz on laptop 2).
Their processors are both AMD Ryzen 7s (8 cores, 16 threads, 16GB RAM) with equal base clock speed (3.2GHz), but laptop 1 has a Ryzen 7 5800H while laptop 2 has a Ryzen 7 6800H. The two processors use different RAM types (5800H uses DDR4 RAM & 6800H uses LPDDR5 SDRAM (though it is fully possible that the 5800H also uses SDRAM and the sites I'm looking at just aren't telling me)). 5800H has a higher peak temperature (105 Celsius vs. 95 Celsius). The 6800H has a higher turbo clock speed (4.7GHz vs. 4.4GHz).
They both have the same graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050), they both ship with Windows 11, and they both have 1TB of storage space.
Ultimately, I think the main question is whether laptop 2's better processor makes a big enough difference that it negates laptop 1's comfort of a bigger display and justifies the price difference despite it being smaller... and I do not know enough about laptops to make the call there.
("Build your own PC" and "buy a desktop PC" are both advice I will not take because I do not own or have space for a desk.)
(They're both Asus Vivobook Pro OLEDs: laptop 1 is M6500QC-MA025W and laptop 2 is M6400RC-KM001W, and more specifically, they cost 15990 SEK and 16990 SEK. My current laptop is also an ASUS Vivobook but I don't even think they make it anymore because it's so bad. It has a 2-core Ryzen 3 processor and 128GB of storage space.)

feel like nvidia linux drivers vs amd linux drivers are such a good example of why proprietary software is anti-user though, like having a particular popular brand of graphics card should not make certain software (ie wayland and to an extent linux more generally) unusable and a buggy hellscape. the only software-related thing i should have to consider when building a computer is whether or not my OS of choice runs on my chosen processor architecture (and if ur going x86_64 then that's basically any desktop OS so it's fine), i shouldn't have to consider that when buying a goddamn graphics card...
