There's been a ton of nationwide protests going on here the past week with riots and police tear gassing people etc. And a huge march is going on in the city rn as I'm typing this, bc like the entire country is angry about our corrupt ass government and president handing over a mining contract to a Canadian company (First Quantum) for a massive copper mine that will completely fuck the environment and wildlife in the entire region.

And tbh the mine on its own is already bad enough (copper mining in particular leaks a ton of poison into the environment, let alone on this scale) but it really does feel like a final straw bc everyone is just beyond fed up of the corruption and the amount of money that gets stolen, and this is another case where they're trying to say the income from the mine will improve the cost of living crisis here but we all know the population will never see a penny (like always) bc the president and other people in power only want to make money for themselves. And then companies like this from wealthy countries will come in just to take resources and they don't give a shit bc its not their land or water supply being damaged irreparably.

lrb i do kind of wonder how much people's approach to incest as a literary theme ends up informed by that stupid fucking fanfiction discourse which posits that the presence of incest (& other "problematic" relationships) in a work of fiction is only ever intended to titillate and like, endorse. otoh that discourse is hopelessly discrete with its categories (fanfiction is X and 'real literature' is Y and these boundaries can never be even slightly porous) but otoh i feel like the establishment of a correlation between constructed intellectual value in a work & non-eroticised thematic utility of its knottier subject matter creates reactionary approaches to such subject matter at uhhh pretty much every level lmao

The first thing Nick learns about his new neighbour is that he plays the drums. 

He’s opening his door with a load of washing at his hip, trying to juggle his keys so they don’t fall through the gap in the banister, when an unfamiliar man carrying the bass drum from one of those electronic drum kits trips up the stairs. 

Nick drops his laundry before he even notices what he’s doing, bidding his keys farewell through the gap in the banister, and catches the drum by its stand before it goes the same way. The man isn’t so lucky, his knee banging painfully into the top step. It’s carpeted but Nick knows there’s concrete underneath, so it’s got to sting. 

The man wheezes out a, “thanks,” clutching his knee. He’s wearing a blue hoodie and a matching beanie, and the hair that’s escaping from the bottom is black and curls endearingly around his eyes, which are a strange hazel—not quite green, or brown, or grey, but somewhere inbetween.

The door opposite Nick’s flat is ajar, the hallway within crammed with cardboard boxes, and it’s immediately obvious this guy is moving in. 

And Nick’s dirty laundry is now spilled all over the landing. Great first impression, Nicholas. 

“Here,” he says, handing over the drum while surreptitiously toeing a pair of boxers back into the basket, which fell on its side at his feet. “You’re number seven?”

“What?” The guy glances back at his open door. “Oh, yeah. Should remember that.” He takes the drum, his fingers brushing over Nick’s as he does so. They’re cold from being outside. “Thanks,” he says again. “I’m Charlie.”
