Ever since all the craziness of their first year (and a bit of their second year) ended, things at UA really dialed down for class A. So much so that they actually have time for normal teenage things like relationships. Shouto realizes it's something he also might be interested in but he's not really sure how it all works. He doesn't know much about dating and relationships and sex and what else comes with all that but he supposes he just has to figure it out along with everyone else.

Summary: After the bookstore closes for the day, Yaoyorozu ends up stuck under the canopy outside while waiting out a storm. She finds herself in the company of a young man who happens to get stuck with her.

“Excuse me, miss. We’re closing in five minutes.”

Yaoyorozu startled and bowed in apology. She carefully placed the book in her hand back onto the shelf, making sure to slot it in the same place she had taken it from.

After making sure the shelf looked tidy, Yaoyorozu went to the counter with the two books she had chosen.

Plus Ultra bookstore was a quaint little place filled with shelves upon shelves of literature of varying genres. Yaoyorozu often found something to her liking whenever she visited, though she wished that could be more often. University classes and studying ate up a lot of her time, so she was thankful it only took a few minutes to walk to the store from campus.

As she neatly tucked the two books into her backpack, making sure to say a quick thank you to the owner, Yaoyorozu noticed a young man who looked to be her age waiting behind her. His hair was parted evenly down the middle, one side a deep crimson and the other as white as snow. Heterochromatic eyes stared back as Yaoyorozu smiled out of politeness, the left one surrounded by an angry-looking burn scar. All in all, the young man was objectively very handsome.

Yaoyorozu shook her head. What would her mother say if she caught her ogling a boy so openly?

With that thought in mind, she hurried out of the store.

Only to find it was raining. Hard. Droplets came down in a heavy downpour, collecting into puddles that rapidly expanded in size and splashing off the ground. Yaoyorozu was only kept dry by the awning displaying the store’s name above her head but the pavement below her feet was already getting damp. A clap of thunder sounded in the distance as thick, dark clouds rolled by above.

Yaoyorozu bit her lip. If she were to walk back to campus in this weather, she would get thoroughly soaked. There was also the possibility of hypothermia to consider, not to mention the written draft of her research paper would be in ruins. It was a risk Yaoyorozu found herself unwilling to take. But what was she to do to solve this dilemma?

The store owner rushed past her and got into a car parked a few metres down the road, slamming the door behind him.

There!

Yaoyorozu opened her mouth, but just as she was about to call out and ask for a ride (she’s been a regular customer for a few months now. A small favour shouldn’t be too much to ask for) he drove away. She sighed, body slumping forward ever so slightly.

Maybe she should risk it. The research paper wasn’t due for a few weeks. But her backpack wasn’t waterproof, so everything in it would end up damaged if not destroyed.

She would just have to wait it out! She could be patient.

“Are you okay?”

Yaoyorozu jumped, letting out a rather unladylike squeak as her hand shot up to cover her mouth. The boy from inside the store stood to her right, his head tilted inquisitively.

“Pardon me,” she said, clearing her throat. “I hadn’t realised you were there.”

His brows furrowed. “Sorry I startled you.”

“No, it’s okay. I get lost in my thoughts sometimes.” Yaoyorozu said reassuringly. All the boy did in return was nod.

Not much of a talker, was he?

Yaoyorozu fiddled with her thumbs, watching the rain splatter from the ground and onto her knee-length boots. It showed no signs of easing up any time soon. She glanced to her right. The young man hadn’t moved. He flicked his hand up, checking the watch on his wrist.

“If you don’t mind me asking, why were you at the bookstore?” She asked in an attempt to pass the time. He blinked back at her as if not expecting the conversation to continue. His brows furrowed, eyes narrowing.

“To buy a book,” he said, glancing down at the one in his hand.

Yaoyorozu giggled but that only seemed to further his confusion. “No, no. That’s not what I meant,” she said with a smile and a shake of her head. “I meant to ask why you’re buying a book.”

The boy whispered a very quiet “oh,” before holding the book up closer to his chest with the front facing toward her. The cover showed an illustration of a young couple, their foreheads resting together and their eyes closed. The couple’s hands were held together against their chests. The title was printed at the bottom, the words in a beautiful, swirling cursive.

Yaoyorozu raised a brow. A romance novel? A peculiar choice for a young man, but some people like things you wouldn’t expect, she supposed.

(Her roommate Jirou, for example, also enjoyed the romance genre, though Yaoyorozu was sworn to secrecy.)

“It’s for my older sister,” he explained. “It’s her birthday soon, and this is the newest novel from her favourite author.”

“How sweet of you,” she whispered, smiling softly. She didn’t have any siblings of her own but the idea of one buying a book for her birthday made her heart sing with joy. This boy clearly cared for his sister, going as far as to pay attention to her favourites.

“What about you? I saw you bought two,” he said.

“One is for a research paper I’m working on and the other is from a book series I’ve been enjoying lately,” she replied, excitement laced into her voice.

“What series is it?”

When she relayed the name to him, his eyebrows darted up ever so slightly. Yaoyorozu supposed it was equivalent to the average, more expressional person gasping.

“I’m also a fan,” he said, lips curling into a barely-noticeable smile. Her eyes widened. “Which book are you up to?”

“The seventh.”

“Me too.”

“What a funny coincidence! You can borrow it from me when I’ve completed it,” she kindly offered. It was the store’s only copy, so she knew he would have to go out of his way to order one from somewhere else otherwise. The local library likely wouldn’t have it in stock yet since it was a small place and the book only released the previous week.

He nodded. “I’d like that. Thank you.”

Yaoyorozu involuntarily clapped her hands together—a habitual way of showing her excitement. As she began to gush about her love for the series, he listened intently, chiming in occasionally. Yaoyorozu couldn’t be any more delighted to have finally found someone to talk about it with.

As their conversation continued, she learnt also they both had the same taste in literature. Yaoyorozu herself had always loved to read. It was a great passion of hers, one of life’s many joys. In fact, it was the very reason she chose to pursue literature and education degrees. It was her goal to pass down that great love for reading to the next generation. In turn, he informed her he was studying at the same university, though a medical degree, not literature or education. To save people’s lives, he said, and to follow in his older brothers’ footsteps. Yaoyorozu thought it was very admirable.

A key difference between them, though, was that he didn’t live on campus. His siblings’ shared apartment wasn’t too far away, so he lived with them instead of at the dorms like most other first years.

Noticing the sound of the rain had gotten quieter, Yaoyorozu held out a hand. It was thinner now, almost a drizzle. Much more preferable for walking in.

“I should be able to get back to campus without getting drenched now,” she said, readjusting the straps of her backpack and making sure it was shut properly. “It was a pleasure to meet you.”

Just as Yaoyorozu took a step forward, he called out to her.

“Wait,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, the simple white case slightly battered at the corners. “We should exchange numbers.”

“Oh, you’re absolutely right,” she said, smacking her forehead. How could she be so careless?

Yaoyorozu stepped back under the cover of the awning and took off her backpack, tucking some loose strands of hair behind her ears as she reached into the back pocket. Pressing a finger to her phone, she unlocked it with her fingerprint and opened it to the contacts page.

As Yaoyorozu exchanged it for his and quickly typed her name and number, she realised something. They’d been so caught up in their conversation, they skipped the introduction step entirely. She didn’t even know the boy’s name, yet it already felt like they’d known each other for a long time.

She took her phone back, quickly glancing down at the screen.

Shouto Todoroki.

Yaoyorozu hummed happily. Looking up, she saw an identical expression adorning his face. She hadn’t noticed it before, but when Todoroki smiled there were cute dimples on his cheeks.

“I’ll be sure to contact you when I’ve finished reading the book,” she promised, a blush rising to her cheeks.

As Yaoyorozu waved to him and set off back to the dorms, Todoroki smiled softly and nodded. “I look forward to it.”

Momo bit down gently on her lip, trying her best not to shiver. The situation was already rather dire, and the last thing she wanted was to worry Todoroki. He, of course, had no problem regulating his body temperature. She was certain he was plenty warm.

She wasn't so lucky; even with her red snow jacket and leggings fit snug against her body, she could still feel the freezing air seeping in through the materials. The wind howled outside, shaking up small flurries of snow that floated by the rundown wooden windows. She rubbed up and down her arms, trying to create heat with the friction.

"Are you cold, Yaoyorozu-san?"

Todoroki's voice made her jump, a small squeak exiting her lips. "Ah! Oh! T-Todoroki-san, no! I'm fine!" she said, waving her hands back and forth.

She didn't want to inconvenience him anymore than she already had. Admittedly, it was her fault they were stuck in this cabin in the first place.

The class had taken a holiday trip up to the mountains to enjoy winter activities before the holiday break. In theory it was fun, but in practice, when the resort had been hit with a snowstorm, it ruined most of the things Momo and Iida had planned together as the class representatives. It had been disappointing to say the least, but they had tried their best to make the most of it, playing a variety of indoor activities. It wasn't the same as what they planned, but Momo hoped it was still enjoyable.

Until she had gotten herself and Todoroki trapped in this tiny cabin.

He raised his eyebrow at her. "You look cold," he said bluntly, tilting his head.

"I..." she glanced down, looking at her winter boots, slightly wet from the now melted snow. "I promise I'm fine. Being in here is much better than waiting outside."

"Maybe we can start a fire," he said, glancing around the room.

The wooden cabin was tiny. The room they stood in seemed to be the main one, though there was only a couch, a fire place and a small table. There was a kitchen at the back and two doors, one which led to a bathroom and one which led to a small bedroom, with only space for the double bed.

She wondered how anyone could ever dream of living in such a place! No wonder it was seemingly abandoned.

Todoroki searched around the small room, opening the door to check on the porch for wood. "If we had wood I could light it no problem..." he muttered. She could probably make wood, but she didn't want to wear her body down anymore than it already was with her being so cold.

"I'd be worried about setting the entire place on fire," she said. "It doesn't look very... fire proof."

"No," he snorted, "but I don't want you to be cold."

"I-I'm not, I swear."

"You've never been much of a good liar, Yaoyorozu-san," Todoroki teased gently, his lips quirking up into a smirk.

She let out a sigh, stroking her gloved fingers along the edge of the couch. "Maybe it's... a little cold."

"You don't have to punish yourself," Todoroki said, making his way over to sit on the couch. "Come here."

She pursed her lips, swallowing as she wrung her hands together. "I just... it's my fault we're both stuck here."

Some of their classmates had been going a little stir crazy, so when the storm subsided enough to venture outdoors, a group had gone snowshoeing along a few of the trails.

Momo wasn't one to usually veer off the path, but when she had seen a few flowers blooming in the snow along the trail, she went to take a picture of them. Todoroki had followed her, interested in what she was talking about.

Unfortunately, the snow underneath them hadn't been as stable as both of them thought, the two tumbling off a small ledge, landing in a large snow pile beneath the cliff. Thankfully, neither of them had been hurt.

Midoriya, Iida, and Uraraka had noticed immediately, rushing off to get Aizawa and the others. They had been hiking for almost an hour and Momo knew it would take them a bit to find them again. Walking a little ways down the lower path, they had found this run down cabin and decided to wait there out of the cold.

Not that it had helped very much.

"It's not like we'll be stuck forever," Todoroki said, and pulled his glove off of his left hand. "Midoriya will come back."

"I know," she said, sighing.

She made her way over to the couch and took a seat next to Todoroki. He held out his hand, igniting a small flame in his palm, holding it between them.

"You shouldn't blame yourself for so much," he said, moving a little closer to her.

Her cheeks flushed, seeing him move so close. He really was warm, offering her the smallest amount of comfort. But being this close to him, it always made her a little flustered; Todoroki Shouto was handsome, and this only reminded her.

"I guess I just... wanted this trip to be something special and fun and the storm ruined a lot of the activities I had planned and then I ruined the snowshoeing."

"I don't think you ruined it," he shrugged. "I don't really expect to have dull moments in this class and this is definitely exciting."

She couldn't help but laugh. "You're not wrong about that." Her dark eyes flicked to his hand.

"You're always... working so hard, worrying about us having a good time. So... if we have to worry about you for a minute, I think that's okay," he said.

She pulled her teeth over her lower lip, letting out a sigh. "I just... don't enjoy causing problems for people. Heroes are supposed to help and I... made such a mess today."

"Aizawa-sensei might yell at us," he nodded.

Momo gasped. "Oh gosh! You're right-"

"Yaoyorozu-san."

"What if this affects our grades!?"

"I don't think-"

"We should write him an apology letter right now!" she said, standing up. She glanced around the room frantically. "I'm sure I saw something to write on-"

Todoroki stood up with her, letting his flame go out as he grabbed her shoulders and pushed her back down onto the couch. "I meant that was probably all that was going to happen. So it's not a mess..."

"O-Oh..." she said, tucking some of her hair behind her ear. "I guess you're probably right," she sighed and rubbed her forehead.

Igniting his flame, Momo stared at it, listening to the gentle crackle of the fire. It burned so brightly against his palm. It was incredible, how he could just let it burn on his skin and not feel a thing. If she reached out to touch it, surely her skin would be hurt.

"Are you sure you're okay to have your fire burning for so long?" she asked, softly.

"Mhm," he said. "It doesn't hurt. I've gotten used to regulating my temperature."

"Ah! True! Your father usually has his fire burning all the time!" she said.

"Mmm..." he nodded up and down, not saying much more. She forgot how much Todoroki didn't seem to enjoy talking about his father.

"Apologies, Todoroki-san," she said.

"You don't have to apologize," he said. "My fire side... it doesn't bother me, not anymore."

"Really? I have noticed you use it a lot more now," she said, her eyes glancing between the flame and his dual-colored eyes.

"Yeah. Midoriya helped me a lot and... so did you, Yaoyorozu-san," he said, his voice drifting out softly.

"Me?" She blinked, looking at him with confusion.

"Yeah," he said. "I've seen you work so hard, pushing yourself to your limits, working through your anxieties and fears. It's... really admirable. I realized I could do better myself if I pushed harder. But... I couldn't keep pushing one side and not the other. You inspired me a lot."

"Mmm," she nodded, scooting closer to him. She ran her fingers down his arm, taking in the warmth emanating off of his body. "I don't really understand how I inspired you, if... if anything you've inspired me!" she said. "You're the one who believed in me when even I didn't believe in myself!"

She stared into his eyes, wishing she could take his hand in her own. She was certain it would be warm and she wanted nothing more than to clutch it to her chest, and feel the heat against her body.

He swallowed, his eyes meeting hers, but briefly flicking downwards. "I... have always felt like you were one of the smartest people I've ever met. You're resourceful and hardworking, all of those things are inspiring. You're a person I want to follow and... be close to."

"Even when I lead you off of a snow ledge?" she asked, laughing softly.

"Even then," he chuckled with her, closing his palm to let the flame go out. He pulled his hand back and gently placed it against her cheek, warming his palm against her skin. "Plus... when I use my fire side, I... can help people. Like you..." he said.

"T-Todoroki-san," she whispered. "Your hand is... really warm."

"Does it feel good?" he asked. His cheeks were the reddest Momo had ever seen them, but he still looked handsome.

Her own cheeks heated up and she was certain it wasn't just from Todoroki's warmth.

"Y-Yeah..." she said, her voice catching in her throat. "It's really nice."

"Could I try... something else to make you warmer?" he asked, his eyes flicking to the side.

Momo nodded. "You can..."

Cupping her cheek against his palm, he gently pulled her face towards his, their lips brushing together.

A small yelp left Momo's lips, and she blinked, shocked. Had Todoroki really just kissed her?!

"S-Sorry, Yaoyorozu-san... maybe I shouldn't have..."

"N-No!" she said. "Sorry it was just... shocking I..." She leaned in to brush their lips together again, leaning into his warm touch. "I... liked it."

"Yeah," Todoroki smiled. "Me too. Did it... warm you up at all?" he asked.

Her cheeks were certainly far more flushed than they were before. "It did," she giggled.

"Good."

"If I had to get stuck in a cabin, I'm really glad it's with you," Momo said, smiling as she took her hand in his.

"I'd be... happy to be stuck anywhere with you, Yaoyorozu-san," he said, leaning in to kiss her once more. His lips really were warm, just what she needed against her freezing ones. He let his other hand rest on her hip, pulling her closer to him, his body so warm and inviting. She wanted nothing more than to snuggle and curl up close to him.

"Yaoyorozu! Todoroki!"

"A-Ah! A-Aizawa-sensei!" Momo gasped lurching away from Todoroki. The last thing she wanted was to be caught so close with him in the cabin. Though pulling away wasn’t exactly ideal either; just when she had started to get comfortable.

"Ah... they're here," Todoroki said, and Momo could almost hear a hint of disappointment in his tone.

She sighed, a feeling of relief washing over her. Admittedly, she was okay with spending her time here with Todoroki, but she knew they couldn't stay tucked away forever.

Jumping off of the couch, she clenched her fists excitedly. "Come on, Todoroki-san," she said, a smile pulling across her lips. "We should go get warm together."

"Y-Yeah," he stammered, his cheeks heating up, and she realized exactly what she had said.

"Ah...! I-I just meant... uhm..."

"I-I know..." he said, standing up off of the couch.

She rushed to the door and dashed out of the cabin where she saw Aizawa with Midoriya, Uraraka and Iida, walking around to find them. "Over here!" she called out, waving.

"Momo-chan!" Uraraka cheered, waving towards them.

"Thank goodness we found you two!" Iida called out, waving his hands about wildly in the air.

"Come on, Todoroki-san," she smiled, nodding toward him.

"Yeah," he said. "Let's go."

With a small smile, he slipped his hand into hers, linking their gloved fingers together, as they stepped down to head back to the resort, where they could get warm together.

okay I’ll be real w/ you I lied I do have One notp and it’s dabihawks (hotwings). it’s. it’s okay, I’ll admit, but it kinda squicks me out in canon verses. like, reverse aus, genderswap aus, most aus really that slightly shift the dynamic, I’m good w/ dabihawks, but Not In Canon or any approximations of it.

I guess antis just kinda fucked it up for me?? I was kinda neutral when it first was proposed, ya know like ‘oh that’s cute!! not for me but more power to ya!!’ but then dabihawks shippers started getting in hawksdeavor shippers’ faces n giving the usual arguments against age gap ships (as if a villain/hero ship was so uwu pure n unproblematic), and then there came the ‘hawks will betray the heroes and become a villain for dabi’ theories from them and it just. that was 2018 and it Still makes me uncomfortable to think about. 

I very much enjoyed hawks’ double agent thing!! but I knew an infiltration mission would end with betrayal from the beginning and that’s what I liked about it. him doing the absolute Most for the heroes even if it feels scummy to do so. I was Devastated for a moment when I saw hawks’ first meetup w/ dabi and it looked like he might be spying for them, but then we were quickly assured that it was a ploy and I was like Oh My God Thank God I Near Had A Heart Attack. but other people, the loudest group being dabihawks shippers, were dissatisfied with this and wanted canon to take a different direction and I Dunno Man, I just had very strong emotions about that and still do. 

I love hero hawks in all his double agent endeavor fanboy glory and people wanting to take it a different direction in canon felt like a blatant kind of???? idk defacing of character almost, even though that’s a mega mega mega dramatic way to put it loL don’t ask me why I got such strong feelins about it I couldn’t explain it if I wanted. I’d love to go back to being chill about it I really really would.

“Trick or Treat!”

Halloween doesn’t make sense to Shouto; however, it isn’t the idea of pretending to be someone else that he can’t comprehend.  Though he isn’t as exuberant as Midoria, Shouto idolized All Might. In fact, he still does. It’s natural for kids to have such dreams.

Shouto can picture himself as a child, turning the corners of a happy home in loose socks and a towel tied his neck like a cape.  His mother would have laughed, and his father would have smirked, peering thoughtfully over the top of his morning paper. Of course, this false memory is nothing more than a poor imitation of normality, strung together from odd ends of pop culture and sitcom reruns.

But it’s a nice thought nonetheless.

No, it isn’t the costumes and pretend play that baffles Shouto.  It isn’t even the flash mobs, zombie runs or themed pub crawls. If U.A. had not kept him so busy, he might have joined in.

It’s the child, a little boy of maybe five or six, who stands in front of him dressed in a navy blue jumpsuit with burgundy wrist guards that causes him unease.  Brown eyes bright with awe, he rocks back and forth, teeming with excitement in his snow-white boots. The child’s movements strain the gray neckpiece connecting the high collar of his costume, and lower down, a brown utility belt jingles with every subtle movement.

Impressed, Shouto scans the child’s heart-shaped face, noting the wig as well as the makeup applied over his left eye to mimic Shouto’s infamous scar. It’s hard to fault the child or his proud mother for their fastidious attention to detail.  Yet, Shouto cannot help but wonder if they’d feel the same if they knew the story behind his mark.

He keeps his silence and forces a small smile, dropping a piece of candy into the kid’s plastic pumpkin along with a pre-autographed card.  Both treats hit the bottom of the container with a hollow thump. It’s only his twentieth visitor, but Shouto has already grown tired of tricks, treats and the children who’ve swarmed the decorated auditorium.

In true U.A. style, the event is ridiculously “Plus Ultra,” from Tokoyami’s Haunted House to the three-legged race officiated by Iida.  Even Bakugo has a part to play, though he has no lines. Ground Zero merely stands by Midnight’s side as she welcomes the crowds, and perhaps it is progress enough that he isn’t yelling obscenities over the sound of Earphone Jack’s festive music.

Shouto’s directive is to be more personable, and to this end, he is paired with Creati, handing out candy on a mock front porch.  So disarming is she that sometimes Shouto forgets that the Yaoyorozu family is old, old money. So kind, that from time to time, villains underestimate her S-class intelligence.

He’s realized recently that she takes advantage of their ignorance.  But not tonight.

Tonight, her smile is as open and unguarded as ever.  Bright eyes blaze in midnight shades of gray offset by the crimson cape of her hero’s costume and the gold belt glinting beneath it.  Flashes of skin capture Shouto’s unbidden attention, but moreover, he finds himself enthralled by the way she connects with both the students and parents.  They might put Shouto on a pedestal as a potential successor to All Might, but the public feels like they know Momo Yaoyorozu.

And sometimes Shouto is jealous.  Of what, he isn’t sure.

“Has the hero Shouto come to help me eat all this candy?” she asks the small boy.

Delight spreads across the child’s face when he realizes she’s talking to him and not the semi-pro handing out candy alongside her.  He happily thrusts his hand inside the plastic jack-o’-lantern and offers Momo an orange KitKat, which she politely declines. Instead, she produces a box of pocky and offers mini-Shouto a slender stick.  They laugh and share their sweets. Momo’s tongue darts out to greet the rich chocolate, and Shouto finds himself watching and wondering.

In the space of a second, the young man’s mind flits back to his earlier reverie.  But now, he is no longer the child; Shouto is the father, sipping a cup of tea, legs tucked under the kotatsu.  A little girl with split black and white hair sprints outdoors. She catches snowflakes in her gloved hands and spins as the flurries continue to fall.  Momo is seated next to him, watching their daughter.

It’s pleasant and disarming -- the precise qualities Momo exudes despite the danger lurking just out of sight and mind. He shakes the pesky thought off and continues to attend to the never-ending line of lookalikes. If it is jealousy Shouto feels, he hopes it will not show.  Not for the first time, he wonders if these wishful daydreams are truly tricks or treats.
