At SEODay, were Google Page Experience Scoring updates revealed?
John Mueller, a Google Search Advocate, talked at an online session at SEODay 2022 on the importance of page experience on search engine results and changes to how search engines evaluate websites.
Google now bases desktop search results on a site's desktop experience, while mobile search results are determined by a site's mobile experience.
In addition, he described the three primary metrics used by the search engine to calculate experience scores: largest contentful paint (LCP), first input delay (FID), and cumulative layout shift (CLS).
Mueller stated, "This is not a tie-breaking factor."
"It won't make or break your website in terms of search, but it does play a role in how results are ranked."
Google has also added a new page experience metric referred to as INP, or "interactivity to next page."
Google announced INP for the first time at I/O 2022, and while Mueller was clear that it is not a direct ranking factor, he discussed INP as something that could play a role in the future.
Search Console Insights Facilitates Tracking Of Search Rankings.
Mueller began his presentation by discussing the advantages of Search Console Insights.
Using Search Console data in conjunction with analytics, users are able to generate custom reports and obtain a unique perspective of the data.
He specifically mentioned BigQuery and Data Studio as "a method for connecting disparate data sources and generating incredibly elaborate reports."
Mueller stated that Google is also working on expanding its Search Console APIs, which will allow users to connect these APIs to their websites' code.
Mueller mentioned monitoring top queries and determining if specific URLs are indexed as possible applications.
Videos and pictures play a more prominent role in search results.
Google previewed a set of video reports coming to Search Console at I/O earlier this year, in response to a growing demand for this type of media in search results.
"We know that customers like seeing videos and real photographs in search results, so we strive to provide them with more," Mueller added.
He includes web tales, a collection of sites that often contain videos, in this rising trend.
Google currently provides a WordPress plugin for generating them to ease their usage.
Genuine Product Reviews Considered in Rankings
The worldwide market for e-commerce is projected to top $5.5 trillion this year, a trend that has been on the rise.
Google's algorithm incorporates what Mueller calls "genuine reviews" to better serve digital buyers.
"People have high expectations for online reviews, therefore we've focused especially on algorithm changes for prioritising these product reviews," he said.

Mueller said at SEODay that Google has somewhat modified its nomenclature, with "title links" now referring only to the title of a search result.
The search engine giant has also introduced the "indexifembedded" robots meta tag.
When embedding material on the main page and want to control the indexing of that embedded content, users may use the meta tag.
Mueller said that the Google blog was the finest source of knowledge on any SEO-related subject.

The oil industry has launched an all-out pressure campaign to kill an attempt by Congressional Democrats to tax methane – an extremely powerful greenhouse gas – for the first time.
The American Petroleum Institute (API), the oil industry’s most powerful lobbying group, enlisted over 130 state-level chambers of commerce, oil lobbying outfits, and labor groups, and together they wrote a letter on September 7 to U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, which is considering the methane fee as part of the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill.
This is despite top oil companies and their trade associations earlier this year claiming they were in favor of carbon pricing as their preferred policy choice to address climate change.
In the same month as the industry made headlines for supporting carbon pricing, U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Brian Schatz (D-HI) introduced a bill in March 2021, the Methane Emissions Reduction Act of 2021, which would impose a $1,800 per ton fee on methane emissions beginning in 2023, and rise by 2 percent per year above inflation going forward.
The senators saw the bill as having the potential to end methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, taking a large bite out of potential warming.
That bill, or some version of it, now has a chance of getting folded into the budget package that Congressional Democrats are currently writing. The House Energy and Commerce Committee included a lower fee in its portion of the package working its way through the House.
With details still murky and Congress working at a blistering pace to put the sweeping budget bill into place, things could still change. But over the next few weeks or months, a methane fee has a real chance of being signed into law by the President.

Twelve years ago, the American Petroleum Institute ran an ad in the print version of the Washington Post. “If you like $4 gasoline,” it read, “you’ll love the House Climate Bill.”
This was during President Barack Obama’s first term, when a gallon of gas cost barely $2.70, and API — a coalition of over 600 companies and the oil and gas industry’s top lobby group — was fighting against the Waxman-Markey Act, landmark legislation to put a price on carbon emissions across the country.
Now, however, the big oil group might be about to change its tune. The group is discussing a draft statement in support of putting a price on carbon emissions — the very same policy that they helped defeat 12 years ago. Such a price, in the form of a carbon tax or a cap-and-trade bill, would increase the cost of fossil fuels and theoretically help to cut carbon pollution across the entire economy. And API isn’t the only business and fossil fuel group coming around on“market-based” climate action. Last September, the Business Roundtable, a lobbying group of 200 CEOs including the leaders of Chevron and ConocoPhillips, announced its support for a carbon price; in January, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, long one of the most powerful lobbying groups, did the same.
But are these claims evidence of a real change of heart — or just an attempt to sidestep even more costly regulations from the new, Democratically-controlled Congress?
“It may well be that the API is realizing that carbon pricing is an idea whose time has come,” said Anne Kelly, the vice president of government relations at the sustainability nonprofit Ceres. “They know that regulations are coming, and so I think they want to be a part of those negotiations to shape what a carbon pricing system would look like.”
But the move could also be an attempt to hamstring other, less palatable policies from gaining too much traction, like more stringent regulations. Democrats in the House and Senate have largely turned away from carbon taxes and cap-and-trade in favor of things like a clean electricity standard — a mandate that the country’s electricity be produced by clean sources by 2035 — or other rules and regulations that would be overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency. On Tuesday, Democrats unveiled their first big climate proposal this Congress, which included such a standard, but no carbon tax.
The group’s draft statement seemed to confirm this. “API supports economy-wide carbon pricing as the primary government climate policy instrument to reduce CO2 emissions while helping keep energy affordable, instead of mandates or prescriptive regulatory action,” the statement read, according to the Wall Street Journal.
