Huh. I'm rewatching Sense8 out of boredom and re-interest and. Kala's father is played by Anupam Kher. Who I mostly know today as Raj's Pops in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenga. Wow, the Wachowskis really went for the cream of the cream for their secondary cast. And also Kala's father is just as good a dad as Raj's dad is.

Just saw the kashmir files letterboxd and amidst all the reviews calling it propaganda there was a very nice girl talking about how its 'so privileged' to call it overly gory while sitting in a theatre with air conditioning when it was a mass Hindu exodus. Thank you anupam kher and whatever agnihotri for rotting the minds of my generation with your nonsense, purposefully targetted propaganda movies where Muslims are always the villains and the good Hindus are always running away from them in fear while other good Hindus banish said invaders and we leave the theatre chanting about a glorious Hindu Rashtra🫡🫡🫡
Also thank you Yami Gautam for starring in movies like Article 370 which is going to be another beautiful propaganda movie which glorifies violence towards Muslims and validates it. And also for always supporting her husband in his endeavors to make such movies hence fulfilling her pativrata dharma

I liked the part with the aloo gobi.
I know nothing about soccer, and thankfully it wasn't a requirement to enjoy Bend It Like Beckham. I didn't even know "bending it" was an actual thing; I thought it was just a figure of speech. Come to think of it, I still don't know what it means.
The story of an Indian girl aspiring to play professional soccer while navigating the cultural expectations of her family is one I found unexpectedly heartwarming. A well written script, some great heartfelt dialogue, and interesting, believable characters went a long way to getting me invested. Parminda Nagra in particular gave an exceptional lead performance.
The climactic back and forth between her sister's wedding and The Big Game, and the scenes immediately following of both, were wonderfully done. I really enjoyed Anupam Kher's performance as a surprisingly cool dad, and the scene of him playing cricket again at the end was actually so sweet.
Not to promote stereotypes about women's sports or anything, but man, this movie should have been gay. It's actually baffling that it wasn't. There was one part where Jess said it wasn't like she was sleeping with anybody and Jules (Keira Knightley) immediately ran onto the scene, and I actually thought it was a bit on the nose because of how clearly they were going to get together. Leave it to a movie from 2002 to have this degree of compulsory heterosexuality.
Speaking of, the love triangle with Jess and Jules both crushing on their coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) was simply uncompelling, and built off a creepy power dynamic that made it uncomfortable to watch. I really didn't care for that final romance scene in the airport at all.
I learned absolutely nothing about soccer, and I hope I never do. Pretty good.

The Maeviks
Details about Marshall's immediate family: her fathers, and her three younger siblings. The page is also available to view on the wiki with photos here.
Oryo Maevik (Anupam Kher fc)
Oryo grew up in quite a large family of his own, but always had more in common with and spent more time with Siyan, the neighbor kid.
He had an affinity for building and repairing vehicles, and he always knew he wanted to do something big with his skills.  It wasn’t hard to convince Siyan, an excellent repairman in his own right.
Between him and his husband, Oryo is the more practical and serious one.  While they both have a large work ethic, it was him that made sure their goals had a way of lifting off the ground.
His other special interest is in dinosaurs, and he named his kids after his favorite dinosaur-centered television program.
Siyan Maevik (Erick Avari fc)
Siyan is the more soft-spoken of the two, but is also the more well-read, even somewhat-smarter of them.
He graduated with a series of certifications under his belt, and has been reading about one book every two days ever since he was a young boy.  Their home is overflowing with books.
He always knew he would want to have several kids and be a dad, and he set up the surrogacy for his children.
Regularly enjoys the taste of black liquorice (He received a regular Mickey Mouse get well soon card as opposed to a Pluto one from Marshall, and it’s now framed in his office.  Even though they know they maybe shouldn't be, Siyan and Oryo are proud of their now-pirate daughter).
Holly Maevik (Aysha Kala fc)
The second-oldest in the Maevik family.
She has a positive and cheerful energy, is honest to the point of blunt-ness, and is very open.
Her extroverted personality, her knowledge of vehicle repair, and her passion for her work makes her the ideal CEO.
When asked by her parents or her younger siblings, she’ll say she’s married to her work and doesn’t have time for anything else like romantic partners, but really she’s never had a crush or even had an urge to date anyone.  Besides, being with someone means having to share her king-sized bed.
She and Marshall grew up very close and still consider each other great friends.
Will Maevik (Nik Dodani fc)
Third oldest. Next to youngest?
Even from a young kid, Will had been the erkuss equivalent of a squirrel, always fidgeting with something, bouncing off of walls, getting distracted in class.  He was given an official ADHD diagnosis to accompany this.
Chaotic neutral.
He has a very comfortable job managing the technical aspects of his parents’ company, and it gives him a lot of time for his many side projects.  Mainly website development.  His website creations range from either useful or very not-useful.  For example, he created a website that has one singular picture of Jeff from the Wiggles, and he refuses to sell off the jeff.com domain to a very adamant stranger named Jeff.
Will has had one girlfriend throughout high school and now, and they would like to get married, but they both keep putting it off.  Simply because they would both like a larger wedding, but don’t want to actually plan one.
Rick Maevik (Seerat Kapoor fc)
The baby of the family.
Rick has next to no memories of when they used to live on Kor’Sel’Koo, and only really knows the version of the dads that owned Maevik Motors.
She wasn’t favored by their parents, per se, but she did receive a lot more leniency on just about everything.  With responsibilities covered by her older siblings, Rick didn’t have to work much for the company, save for starring in the occasional commercial.  She had a lot of freedom to hang out with friends, date, and her free spirit meant she racked up many wild stories to share.
After she graduated school, Rick knew she wanted to act more, and so she auditioned and landed several more gigs in commercials, and had a small role in a tv drama series on Kraysha called Glass House.
She’s currently taking up a regular modeling gig for a soda company.
After a series of partners, Rick met her now wife on the set of Glass House, they had a huge wedding about two years ago, and the two live in Different City.

Alaukik - The Missing Goncharov Adaptation
Tumblr media
Martin Scorsese, creator of Goncharov (1973), greatly appreciated Indian cinema. Thus, it is of no surprise that over a decade later, he decided to bring his best film to an industry that had influenced him so greatly.
In 1990, Scorsese made the journey to Mumbai (then Bombay) to meet with renowned director, Yash Chopra, of Yash Raj Films. He had plans to adapt Goncharov for an Indian audience. It was initally planned to be made years earlier, with Amitabh Bachchan and Anupam Kher leading the film.
Though, with the 1990 version, Scorsese allowed Chopra to take great artistic liberty. Chopra cast two unknowns, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol Mukherjee, in the equivalent roles of Goncharov and Katya. The roles were renamed to Rahul Alaukik and Pooja Khanna. The roles of Sofia and Andrey, now named Nisha Prasad and Rancho Singh, respectively, went to Madhuri Dixit and Aamir Khan who would go on to star in Dil that same year.
Unlike the original, Alaukik really leans into the bisexual polycule subtext, which was near unheard of for Indian cinema at the time and even today. Sadly, the film harbored hard feelings for two of the male leads, seeding the feud between Khan and Khan that would come to an end with 2022's Laal Singh Chaddha. Nonetheless, the movie was extremely popular with both audiences and critics. It established many tropes present in Hindi cinema today, such one lover running towards the other who is on a moving train. This scene, between Khan's Alaukik and Khan's Singh later inspired a very similar scene between Khan and Mukherjee in 1995's Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Instead of the bathhouse scene, Alaukik and Singh sit in a communal bathroom dancing in chairs that look like butts.
In a revision of Goncharov's death scene, Alaukik falls down a set of stairs, with no one around to save him. A small white dog named Buffy passes by and howls.
It shot Mukherjee and Khan to stardom and they would go onto star in many more movies together, all thanks to Scorsese's love of Indian cinema.
Alaukik changed the landscape of Hindi cinema and its legacy is seen throughout films of the time period and of the modern era.
Interestingly, one day on a visit to set, Scorsese noted that Shahrukh had a particularly good banter with an American extra, Leonardo DiCaprio. Years later, Scorsese would try to reunite the two with a movie called Xtreme City, but it never got made.
Alaukik would go onto inspire a number of Hindi adaptations of American films such as Dil Bole Hadippa!, Maqbool, Omkara, and Haider.
Sadly, Alaukik was never issued an international release despite Scorsese's involvement. The only reason anyone today knows about it is because a partial reel of film was found in the Maratha Mandir cinema when they were about to premiere Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
I hope that one day we have more to show for this piece of work that launched the careers of some of India's most well known actors.

The Unseen Hustle: Sikander Kher Dismantles Bollywood Privilege Myths, Embraces the Path of Perseverance
Tumblr media
Sikander Kher's Candid Confession: Talks Privilege and Perseverance in Bollywood
The starry allure of Bollywood often belies the gritty reality of persistence that even the most established actors endure. In a recent heart-to-heart, Sikander Kher, son of veterans Anupam Kher and Kirron Kher, opened up about his career and the perils of taking his privilege for granted. Kher revealed that he stopped actively searching for roles, an approach that starkly contrasts with seasoned actors like his father, Anupam, Anil Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff, who continue to hustle for work. The Narrative of Nepotism In an industry scrutinized for nepotism, Sikander's acknowledgment uncovers an infrequent perspective: a privilege perhaps less of an edge and more of a cushion, one that can lead to career complacency. Fortunately for Sikander, the self-awareness illuminated a critical truth - consistent effort reigns supreme, regardless of one's lineage. Learning from the Legends Kher's realization embodies the age-old adage, "success is a journey, not a destination." Emulating the work ethic of icons Anupam Kher, Anil Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff – who remain relentless in their quest for roles despite their legacy – shifted Sikander's outlook. They serve as beacons of dedication, with Anil Kapoor grappling for meatier roles post a successful Netflix series, and Jackie Shroff maintaining his zest for work post his significant Bollywood innings. Not a Simple Road This sentiment strips away the facade that privileges equates to an assured cinematic journey. As Sikander imparted, even after an admirable stint in an acclaimed web series, the struggle to bag substantial roles persists. This underscores a reality check that lineage does not guarantee success; rather, consistent hard work and continual self-improvement carry the day. Charting a New Course Encapsulated by his newfound realization, Sikander Kher is charting a novel trajectory. This pivot is indicative of a larger trend within Bollywood, where industry insiders stress the importance of persistence and performance over pedigree. In closing, Sikander Kher's confession emits a duality — a reflection of his privileges and the tribulations that embody the acting profession. As the drama of Bollywood unfolds both on and off the screen, stories like Kher's spotlight the unseen struggles that go behind the glamor and underscore a message for all: in the grand tapestry of cinema, sustained diligence, and passion still hold the power to script one's destiny. Actors, Celebs Take Selfies At New Ram Temple.
A huge group of actors and celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, and couples Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif attended the Ram temple's consecration in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya today. Filmmakers Rohit Shetty and Rajkumar Hirani; actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Madhuri Dixit Nene along with her husband Sriram Nene, and producer Mahaveer Jain also came to the temple town.
Tumblr media
Many were seen clicking selfies at their seats when Prime Minister Narendra Modi started addressing people. Some of those seen taking selfies were Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Rohit Shetty, Katrina Kaif, Ayushmann Khurrana, Madhuri Dixit, Rajkumar Hirani, Akash Ambani, and Vicky Kaushal.
Hema Malini, Rajinikanth, Pawan Kalyan, Shankar Mahadevan, Madhur Bhandarkar, Subhash Ghai, Shefali Shah, Vipul Shah, Randeep Hooda, Lin Laishram, Aadinath Mangeshkar, Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam were among those who arrived in the temple town on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, Chiranjeevi was photographed getting out of a chartered plane at Ayodhya airport. He was accompanied by his wife Surekha and son, "RRR" star Ram Charan.
Actors Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, who are shooting for their upcoming film "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan", gave their wishes in a video message on social media.
"Both of us wish you Jai Shri Ram! It's a big day for all devotees of Lord Ram across the world. After a wait of hundreds of years Ram Lalla is returning to his abode in a grand temple in Ayodhya. We wish you and your family on this pious day," Akshay Kumar said in the clip.
Tiger Shroff said watching this day become a reality is a big deal. "We are waiting for the time when we will light up lamps to welcome Shri Ram," said the actor, whose father Jackie Shroff attended the 'pran prathishtha' today.
Anupam Kher, who reached Ayodhya on Sunday, said regardless of religion, the country has come together today. Kangana Ranaut, who reached Ayodhya on Saturday, said it appears as if she has been transported into a "pauranik kaal". She also posted a series of her pictures from the temple site.
"This is a divine experience. If we talk about development, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has completely changed Uttar Pradesh. Ayodhya will go on to become even more famous than Rome's Vatican City, not just in terms of development, but spirituality as well. Our icon, Ram Lalla, will guide the whole world," Ms Ranaut said.

So I'm watching this movie entirely because the poster looks interesting (and Milind Soman!). And yet, in the first 15 minutes, not only has there been no Milind Soman (turns out he's not the main character), but also:
A man (our hero, apparently) wakes up to his alarm clock (after the Bollywood favorite dream of winning some award given to you by a famous actress, soon after an item song) and immediately exclaims "I"m late". Like, if waking up to your alarm clock is late, you are using this clock incorrectly.
Hrishitaa Bhatt! (She's the actress in the dream, though, so I we may not see her again)
Our hero is upset, with good reason, but also exclaims "I worked hard for 3 months." Like, having been an 'adult' for a bit now, I don't think 3 months of hard work is enough.
The girl who will apparently be our main actress is upset that her boyfriend (our hero) is late to watch her presentation. And this isn't some sort of TED talk - this is her, at a company she works at, trying to sell some unhackable software to interested buyers. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be able to sit in on this anyways.
It was also around this point that I realized that the Milind Soman movie I wanted to watch was actually 16th December, not this one. But I figure since I've already started it, I might as well continue until it becomes unbearable (I mean, even with all this, it isn't as painful as, say, Heropanti 2).
Though, it tries. She finally wisens up and gets exasperated by his video game playing (instead of, you know, actually getting a job) and is like "you have 2 months to make something of yourself" - it's so bad that even these random kids are like "we can't play all day, we have to sell things and make money for the family" (though, there is a bit of abuse that is sorta glossed over) - and, in response, her parents and Anupam Kher's character (some random rich guy who appears to know him and her) are like "what are you doing?" It's an interesting reverse from typical Bollywood, where parents are like "no, you can't marry this guy, he has no job!" in that they're like "don't break up with him just cuz he's got no job or income or prospects" - and it's frustrating, because she's actually being sensible! (Well, until that completely unnecessary jab about the video game convention thing right when he's trying to come through on her 2 month deadline.)
Once the "twist" takes place (finally, Milind Soman!), things... maybe get better? Maybe. The 'red/yellow' debate between mom and daughter was a good way to introduce a clue, but heavens did they need to keep the audio of that debate going for so long? It became clear immediately that the mom has no idea what color blindness is, but was also annoying. He later, off the top of his head, says that color blindness is rare (one in a million), so they can hack into some database and figure out who one of the "producers" who hired him, but a simple study online would've know it to be closer 1/10,000 (for females) - meaning that it's probably not rare enough that just looking for license applications rejected on those grounds would be a simple search. But then, when has Bollywood ever cared for truth about science/medicine.
He makes up a fake code has part of planning, and that ends up being the exact password for this insane security system guarding some insanely crazy diamonds? Yeah, okay. ... And speaking of coincidences: her friend goes on vacation to disappear for half the movie, then returns and just happens to be almost engaged to one of the culprits. Like every single clue/discovery is pure coincidence (well, 3 of the 4) - the colorblindness thing he sees/overhears, the don's henchmen having the same bracelet, this. The only one that isn't is the one where he finds the picture, reminding him of the house; even that, he had entirely given up and only gone to investigate her apartment on Jiya's suggestion.
The scene where he writes a story for them: he writes it, gives it to them, they read it and all say "I love it," and then, and only then, he's like "I changed the prompt you gave me a little bit." Like, no shit! - they literally just read what you wrote. Why are you telling them this AFTER giving it to them to read?
The director he goes to at one point gives him a DVD of the movie Evolution and asks him to make a Bollywoodized remake of this "blockbuster" movie. That movie wasn't really a blockbuster - and I'm not sure that Bollywoodizing a sci-fi movie with aliens is really a great way to go (yes, I know about Koi Mil Gaya, but I've also seen other Bollywood attempts at sci-fi).
I know it's not the exact same crime, but I don't know if, in in trying to prove your innocence, committing a whole bunch of crimes is the best way to go. Also, in this process of creating havoc on the streets of Mumbai, he, on a bike, is barely able outrun (outride?) Milind Soman on legs. Impressive running, Milind. And the bike riding is made even more ridiculous by the scene where he is hit by a car and slides under a truck like some weird Matrix-style act. Dumb. Also, how did the wannabe writer become so good at action? And at defusing bombs? This is ridiculous.
The entire Don thing, I guess done for comic relief (and indirectly leading to another clue) , is dumb. And we don't really need comic relief at that point in the movie, we just need it to end and give us true relief. Also not giving relief are the songs, which are ... skippable. Sulag Sulag, the second item song, is the best of a poor lot, simply because it's fast-paced enough to be somewhat catchy.
At least Milind's character is smart enough that after the 3rd murder, he's like "maybe (main character) isn't the culprit." We also get the "nonsense" guy from Singham, which is what I will forever know him as/for.
Foreseeable twist/ending, because the role otherwise was pretty minimal. Also, too much interest in what was going on. Glad it wasn't Milind; might've been even better if it was her. But given the lack of other real characters in the movie, it was guessable. (Also, once he starts the timer - the time passes very, very quickly. Like, quicker than a minute is, which is interesting cuz normally in movies, 1 minute takes like 2 hours to pass.) Until time is running out, then it takes him like multiple minutes to slowly type in a code. Like, come on bro, her life (and yours) is on the line!
Milind Soman somehow fights a bunch of people and then appears on top of a boat that is entirely encompassed by water on 3 sides and a dock, which the baddies are walking on, on the 4th. Impressively impossible. Also, he can apparently fly, and jump out of water like a dolphin. And, in the end, an Ajnabee-style death for our baddie.
He enters the code and... instead of defusing, it goes into a Windows-like "processing" mode. Imagine getting the code right and then being foiled by it take minutes to process. Speaking of codes, though - all the codes in this movie that require "cracking" (sure, there's only 2 of them) are absolutely ridiculous. Like, the code setters for the security needed help from those google "autosuggest passwords" that no one could remember even if they had written them down.
Nonsense. It's all nonsense.
