HURIWA hails creation of media complaints commission
Tumblr media
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria HURIWA (HURIWA) has hailed the establishment of the Ombudsman otherwise known as the National Media Complaints Commission, headed by Emeka Izeze. HURIWA said the Commission would strengthen the abuse of human rights and unprofessionalism of quacks who parade as journalists, especially bloggers. Its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, said: “The concern of Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) is on the rapid decline of media ethics about the total disregard of media laws by media organisations especially those of the Online genre. “We in HURIWA are amongst the few groups that support freedom of the press in line with Section 22 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 as amended. “HURIWA is however worried by the misdemeanours that have continued to emerge and challenge the ways and manners that the media practitioners ought to practice their profession. “Journalism in Nigeria shouldn’t be a trade but a profession. There has to be a way to bring online reporters under some kind of self-regulation as the newspapers and broadcast industries have done with the broadcasters organisation of Nigeria and the print media ombudsman that is headed by erstwhile MD of The Guardian newspaper of Nigeria Mr Emeka Izeze. “We applaud the newspapers for this bold step. We are aware that online publishers have an organisation or maybe two organisations. “But online publishers should be categorised under print and should therefore be regulated by this National Newspaper Ombudsman, headed by Emeka Izeze.” Meanwhile, Onwubiko described as ‘fake news’ an online report in which a military officer who is undergoing court marshal alleged that the former Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai, asked him to pay Saudi Arabia some money so he obtains citizenship. He claimed that even when the military corrected the online platform, it still went ahead to write another story against Buratai. He said: “The summary is that Sahara Reporters alleged that a Major General who is undergoing court marshal alleged that his former boss the former Army chief asked him to pay Saudi Arabia some money so he obtains citizenship. This is fake because our findings show that Saudi Arabia is rich so doesn’t need outsiders to pay them to buy citizenship. “Buratai has no Saudi Arabia citizenship and why did SaharaReporters go to press with such a falsehood without verification?” Read the full article

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, Temitope Ajayi, said this on Wednesday in reaction to the US presidential candidates debate held on Tuesday night, between Democrat candidate, Donald Trump and Republican candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.Ajayi said like Peter Obi, Trump would use unimaginable negative words to describe a country he wants to lead just to win the sympathy of voters. The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has confirmed the receipt of a flood intervention fund of ₦3 billion from the Federal Government, which will be utilized to tackle the challenges posed by the recent flooding.Naija News reports that over one million individuals have been displaced due to the catastrophic floods in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.Governor Zulum gave more information regarding the devastating events on Wednesday during a donation of cash to those seeking refuge at the Bakassi IDP camp along the Biu-Damboa road in Maiduguri.Zulum announced that food supplies and other essential items would be provided, with vendors engaged to supply meals to the displaced individuals in the camp.As part of long-term strategies, the governor indicated that a health committee will be established to monitor potential disease outbreaks and mitigate their effects. He stated that search and rescue operations have commenced in the affected communities to assess casualties, and data collection of those impacted will begin immediately.Regarding the flood’s cause, the governor attributed it to the heavy rainfall experienced this year.Zulum noted that urban development has obstructed water channels throughout the state capital, impeding natural water flow.Additionally, he pointed to the overflow of the Alo Dam, which was exacerbated by the release of water from other dams in Cameroon.Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, issued a ruling granting bail to ten #EndBadGovernance protesters who had been detained on charges including treason. Each defendant was granted bail set at ₦10 million, along with the requirement of one surety in the same amount. In his ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized the principle of presumption of innocence, asserting that anyone charged with a criminal offense is presumed innocent until proven guilty. He acknowledged the arguments presented by the defense counsel, particularly Abubakar Marshall, representing the 1st, 2nd, and 4th defendants.Despite the serious nature of the charges, Justice Nwite decided to grant bail to all ten defendants, stating, “I have carefully considered the submission of the counsel on both divides. I hereby grant the defendants bail notwithstanding the crime.Justice Nwite approved their bail applications, stipulating that each defendant must secure a surety who is both a property owner and resident in Abuja. These sureties are required to provide property documents and an affidavit of means to the court. Additionally, both defendants and sureties must submit their international passports and three recent passport-sized photographs.Justice Nwite overruled the Inspector General of Police’s objections to the bail requests and imposed a restriction prohibiting the defendants from participating in any public demonstrations during their trial.Until bail conditions are met, the defendants will remain in custody, while their trial is scheduled to begin on September 27.Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu, has said that he has declined all requests for interviews on the country’s economy crisis over the past several months.Moghalu explained that he decided to stay silent because he does not see the need to dialogue with the deaf.He asserted that he has already spoken several times on how to fix the Nigerian economy, and anyone interested should go find his previous interviews.Speaking via his X handle, the former deputy governor lamented that despite not needing Nigeria economy to survive, he has been concerned about the situation in the country out of passion.
Early on Wednesday morning, the garrison town of Bassa in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State came under severe attack from suspected Boko Haram terrorists.According to local sources who spoke with Premium Times, the community has been subjected to sporadic gunfire since approximately 5:30 a.m.The attack marks yet another violent incident in a town that has seen its fair share of conflict, including a significant attack earlier this year where several soldiers, including a captain, were killed. This incident had previously led to the withdrawal of troops from the area. However, the government had redeployed joint security forces recently to bolster the town’s defense, allowing residents to return to their homes.Sources report that as the attack commenced, security operatives instructed residents to remain indoors while they engaged the attackers. The ongoing violence in Bassa is attributed to the presence of Boko Haram militants in the nearby Allawa forest reserve, turning the area into a frequent battleground. The region has suffered extensively, with bandits and terrorists infiltrating from neighboring states such as Zamfara and Kaduna, utilizing the Kuyambana and Kamuku forest reserves as their pathways. The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has said President Bola Tinubu’s government offers no hope for Nigerians. The National Leader of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) said all economic and security policies of President Tinubu have only worsened the situation of Nigerians. In his “State of the Nation” open letter on Tuesday, the Aare Ona Kakanfo accused Tinubu of turning a dictator by charging #EndBadGovernance protesters with treason for doing what he had always done to other administrations. He reminded the President that by 29 May 2023, a liter of fuel only cost less than ₦200, but with his “subsidy is gone” statement fuel has gone to over ₦1000 per liter, and Naira to Dollar was less than what it is in his administration.Adams told President Tinubu that insecurity has worsened in his administration and his government has not been doing enough to curb it.The leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) accused the President of mismanaging the August 1 hunger protest. He decried the clampdown on civil society organizations by security agencies.Google News That’s the top Nigerian newspaper headlines for today. Read more Nigerian news on Naija News. NHRC, CSOs insist on Punishing those behind 450 cases of poll violation
Tumblr media
The Federal Government has been tasked to arrest and probe perpetrators of various acts of electoral violence during the just concluded general elections before it’s too late. This is after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), yesterday, disclosed that it received 450 complaints of human rights abuses and violations during the polls. According to the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu (SAN), while 300 complaints of human rights violations were received during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, 150 cases were recorded during the governorship and state Houses of Assembly polls. Ojukwu stated these in an interview with journalists in Abuja, during the launch of the e-rights project by the Avocats Sans Frontières France, popularly known as Lawyers Without Borders. The project, which was funded by the European Union (EU), is aimed at promoting the rights of Nigerians in the digital sphere, harnessing opportunities and addressing challenges provided by new technologies. Recall that over 700 offenders were arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for violation of electoral laws during the elections. Disclosing this on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, said the exact figure of those arrested currently stands at 781. Giving more details regarding the arrest, IGP Baba said 185 cases of electoral infractions were recorded during the presidential election with 203 arrests made. For the governorship and State Assembly elections, the police chief stated that 304 electoral breaches were recorded with 578 offenders arrested. The NHRC boss stated that the Commission closely monitored activities of law enforcement and security agencies during the elections. He said: “Of the 450 complaints received, I cannot say exactly the categorisation. This is because some were about violence, vote buying, voter suppression, intimidation and hate speech. Don’t forget, we had a situation room, which was able to harness the complaints of Nigerians across board of the violations that happened during the elections. The Vice President of ASF France, Ivan Paneff, said the agency had over the last 15 years, worked with Nigerian institutions to protect human rights of citizens. He, however, said the coming of modern technologies have made it necessary to look at the aspect of digital rights. “Now, we have entered a new phase in a new area of the law due to the permanent intervention of electronic devices, tools and networks in our day to day life. It means we have to take that in account to protect the rights of citizens and fight against abuses, using tools, networks and different bad behaviours of certain bodies or companies.” On her part, Country Representative of ASF France in Nigeria, Angela Uwandu, warned against censorship of online platforms, saying freedom of expression have to be guaranteed, not just offline, but also on online platforms. According to her, the e-project will respond directly to the needs of youths, activists, journalists, bloggers, social media influencers, human rights defenders and active citizens to have access to a free and open internet. THE Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED) has asked the Federal Government to arrest and probe those who perpetrated various acts of electoral violence during the polls. The group warned that should authorities fail to take action against perpetrators of all the criminal acts, which were committed on the election days, citizens would take action in the form of sending petitions to national and international bodies, especially where perpetrators of such acts have been properly identified. CHRICED’s Executive Director, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said: “Given the climate of fear, anxiety and uncertainty, which now pervades our country, there can be no mistaken the fact that all is not well. From the discontent in the polity, to the worries posed by an economy in tatters, Nigerians are having it rough in the hands of the current ruling elite. “CHRICED believes strongly that it is not yet too late to investigate, apprehend and prosecute the brigands and their backers for the crime of violently subverting the vote of the Nigerian people. “Sadly, as we speak, the gang of criminals and thugs who assaulted and threatened electors on Election Day are still walking scot-free,” he said. The group further noted that the 2023 elections, which witnessed 24.9 million Nigerians voting in the Presidential and National Assembly elections out of more than 93.46 million registered voters show that Nigeria is experiencing a democratic decline. He said: “The fact that only 24.9 million Nigerians voted in the Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25, out of more than 93.46 million registered voters and 87 million citizens, who collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), is a major disappointment. “This implies that Nigeria is experiencing a democratic decline due to the declining voter turnout. This calls for urgent steps to fix the flaws ailing our democracy.” Also, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) coordinated by the Global Network for Youth Empowerment and Equal Justice (GNYEEJ), led by Chris Okike, has told the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to explain to Nigerians why the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) developed faults during the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections. In a communiqué made available to journalists in Abuja by the Executive Director of GNYEEJ, the coalition resolved that “INEC should explain to Nigerians why the BVASs developed many faults.” PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has described those trying to ascribe religious or ethnic colouration to the Obidient movement as being parochial. Obi, in a series of tweets, yesterday, said there is no looking back on the movement’s goal of taking back Nigeria because the time is now. Arrests made by the police for alleged disruption of voting and destruction of ballot boxes at Gwammaja area of Dala LGA, Kano State. FILE PHOTO “In the life of every nation, there is a turning point. For Nigeria, that time is now; a time to save Nigeria, save our democracy and give the Nigerian youths hope. The OBIdient Movement has been the arrowhead in the take back Nigeria mission.” He described his role in the movement as just to provide leadership and direction. “My role in the movement is that of a focal point. As I’ve always stressed, Nigeria remains a secular state. As such, the movement is not about my tribe or my religion, and it is not an Igbo agenda or in any way, to Christianise Nigeria. “My aspiration is for a new Nigeria, where the children of a nobody will become somebody. A nation anchored on national interests, and not sectional interests; where the entire youths from the six geopolitical zones will have a sense of belonging in the affairs of their country.” Obi drew the attention of Nigerians to what is happening in Scotland, where a 37-year-old, Humza Yousaf, is set to become Scotland’s first Minister, having won the keenly contested SNP’s leadership contest. Born to Pakistani parents, Yousaf, whose parents migrated to Scotland in the 60s, is from the ethnic minority and a Muslim. “I have always maintained that Nigerians must rise above ethnicity, religion, and sectarian politics in matters of governance; and that the leadership selection process must be strictly based on character, competence, capacity and compassion, only then shall our democracy flourish and our society progress. Contextually, the Scottish reality is instructive and presents us with some lessons learned and missed opportunities.” Read the full article
