Gonna do another write up about a project I planned that never really went anywhere.
Welcome, friends, to the BTM band AU post
What is it?
Band AUs are definitely considered classics when it comes to fandom alternate universes and this one's... definitely a band AU i guess.
BTM is a band consisting of Grian (or Griande) on vocals, Impulse on drums, Pearlo on the keyboard, and Scar on guitar. There are a couple more stragglers sometimes but we'll get to that. As for their style it... varies?
Well, it depends. if its 'Grian' on the mic, they can range from the usual pop-punk or emo, maybe even rock if the mood calls for it-- but if its 'Griande' they usually go for ska or funk. This is when they get a couple more peeps to fill in the sound.
They get a brass section! Tango and Zedaph from Impulse's old college marching band "The Moonlighters" and they round it out with Gem, one of Pearl's old housemates when they tried living in one of those content houses with the Empires collective (they still collab tho). They play the trombone, the trumpet, and the saxophone (small stature, big lungs).
The band meets Mumbo after a gig. They were winding down in their favourite bar/cafe "The Hermit" when Scar very loudly and unabashedly asked who the "eye candy" was to the owner, Xisuma. Turns out, dude was just fired from his job and Xisuma took him in as a part-time bartender/barista, he wasn't the best at it but at least he stopped breaking Xisuma's fancy martini glasses a couple days in.
They asked if he was looking for a full-time job and he said yes. He asked if he knew anything about management and he said 'eeeeeeeeh' which they took as a kind of yes and hired him on the spot. With BTM's popularity growing, they needed a proper manager and not just rely on Grian (whose biggest problem would be his impulsiveness) and Impulse (who'd probably work himself to death if the mood was right).
So whats the plot?
It was supposed to be an ask blog first and foremost. Half of the information up there (and more) was supposed to be slowly drawn out by ask box questions. The format was supposed to look like members of the band being interviewed by the person asking, kind of like the latter half on that one mumriande gif I made (which is one of the stuff I made with this AU in mind lol)
There was supposed to be a mystery to uncover, then solve. There was supposed to be some drama and angst. Some moving pictures and animation memes, animatics even. I even have a playlist sorted!
So what happened?
Nothing really. It was nice thinking about making it but at the end of the day I am but a tired, easily distracted human being. I just made this post because there's a lot of nice details in this that I wanted to share, like the Hermitland post ages ago.
And not like I'm not gonna make things in the AU anymore but the ask blog's probably never going to see the light of day.
Some Fun Stuff
The fans never know what genre of songs they're going to walk in on, at least until they see if it's Grian or Griande holding the mic, but even then they sometimes do a double whammy and have Grian sing funk songs and Griande pop it up.
They're rivals with this experimental metal/electronic/acoustic fusion duo called Octagon. They play it up a lot on stage, but this one time someone from BTM really misunderstood something that made a good angsty bit.
There's this couple who met at a concert. One of em was really hoping for a night of funk while the other wanted some throwback alt rock. They talked before BTM's set started and really hit it off! They didn't even mind whoever came out to sing that night.
There was a group of fans who made a banner that said "We love you _____" and just had velcro patches with 'Grian' and 'Griande' embroidered on them.
There was supposed to be another, more secret ask blog for other more secret (👀) asks.
Conclusion
So yeah, band AU, that is all.
Thank you for reading!

Ranking the different endings in Barbie Epic Road Trip (worst to best)
❗️might contain spoilers for some ❗️
6.) Taking the express route, making it to the Jacinda audition early but failing to get the music video job OR taking the scenic route and taking it slow with Ken at the ferris wheel.
Epilogue:
The casting director doesn’t think Brooklyn and Malibu has what it takes to be backup singers.
But she did like their energy so she made them the “Dancing Trees” in the music video (which was kinda sad ngl)
The girls hit a wall with their music career. Very disappointing considering how hard Rafa and 'The Barbies' have worked to make their pop duo group happen :(
Since neither Ken or Skipper was mention, it’s not a good outcome for me because basically everything is inconclusive
Malibu returns home to California with her new puppies, Bella and Ella, while Brooklyn goes back to New York. Their future in the music industry implied to be unclear. (Boooooo! 👎)
**Skipper and Ken are not present in this epilogue
5.) Malibu chooses to do the long song with Brooklyn and earns a record deal with a talent scout
Epilogue:
Brooklyn and Malibu end up impressing the talent scout for doing an acoustic version of Jacinda’s song ‘Flip the Script’
The talent scout signs them for a record deal but they have to move... TO LONDON!
Ken is happy for her but also sad that she'll be so far away. He gives her the sea glass bracelet anyway, telling her that she'll always have a piece of him wherever she goes. They remain friends.
The Barbies move to London, and the girls are enjoying it there because the music industry is fierce and that this deal is better than the Jacinda opportunity.
Okay this one, I didn’t like very much, because this ending doesn't not make a lot of sense. I mean I know the girls love their music careers but will they really leave their familes and friends behind and focus solely on their music 4000 miles away from home? I just think it's very out of character for them. ☹️
**Skipper and Ken are not present in this epilogue
4.) Going straight to New York from the Haunted House in New Orleans. Making it to the Jacinda audition on time and succeeding on getting the spot for the music video
Epilogue:
The casting director loves their audition and hires them to be on Jacinda's music video.
Since in this case, we missed out on a very important route with Ken, he only gives Barbie the sea glass bracelet then returns back to Malibu. Ken and Barbie remain friends.
Skipper was able to give all the dogs away, but no one invests in Match Mutts. So she returns home to work on her app (mediocre outcome)
Barbie says that she's happy she and Brooklyn are on their way to stardom but kinda disappointed she didn't have clear ending with Ken, who she's not quite sure if she's dating or not (in short, what happens to Barbie and Ken's relationship is vague and inconclusive)
** Skipper and Ken are not present in this epilogue 3.) Taking the express route, taking it slow with Ken, making it to the audition on time and getting hired for the music video job.
Epilogue:
They do a great job on the music video but they didn't get to be back up singers to Jacinda's world tour.
Malibu moves to New York. She and Brookyln await their big break which is "right around the corner" according to Rafa.
Skipper also hits it big with Match Mutts. She's now running her startup on her own back home in Malibu, and is doing great despite not getting an investment deal.
Ken doesn't move to New York because he still wants to go to the places on his bucket list. Although, he does visit Barbie a lot. They're "doing great", says Barbie, but since they decided to take things slow, they're not offically together.
This one is alright. Even though, Barbie and Ken remain friends in this ending. Atleast, they have acknowledged their feelings for one another, and will inevitably get together at some point. As for Skipper, for me this ending was kinda subpar for her.
**Skipper and Ken are not present in this epilogue
2.) Rebecca Lee agrees to invest in Match Mutts after Skipper was able to restart her app.
Epilogue:
Massive win for Skipper mostly!
Barbie returns to Malibu to help Skip run the business, and also so she can be with Ken, because he is where her heart is.
Brooklyn goes back to New York and becomes a hit solo artist.
West Coast Roberts family adopt the dogs, Bella and Ella. Plus Barbie and Ken are now happily dating! (did you guys see the way the stared at each other?)
Second favorite ending because everyone still gets their happy ending. However, it did felt off-putting to split up Brooklyn and Malibu. They began their journey to become a pop duo sensation together. With this ending, 'The Barbies' are technically done/over because they went their separate ways... so there's that to consider.
**Brooklyn is not present in this epilogue
1.) Brooklyn and Malibu are able to sing for Jacinda after Rebecca Lee arranges a private audition for them OR if they impressed her during their performance at the Vegas dance club.
Epilogue:
Both the casting director and Jacinda loved their audition and hires them to be in the music video. After that, Jacinda brings Brooklyn and Malibu along to sing back up for her world tour.
This gives 'The Barbies' the boost they needed to jumpstart their career as a pop singing duo. (lmao Otto Phoenix who?)
Jacinda adopts Bella and Ella and takes them on her world tour.
Skipper's Match Mutts business is a huge hit as well since the investor Rebecca Lee loved the vlog Malibu did with the dogs and agrees to invest on the app (taking the express route won’t unlock the scene with the investor but Skipper will still be able to drop off all the dogs and get positive reviews nonetheless).
Malibu moves to New York so that she can keep pursuing her career with Brooklyn.
KEN MOVES TO NEW YORK TOO (yaaayyy!!) so he can be with his girl (and so that they can still be together as a couple). Of course, this means Barbie is beyond thrilled! She managed to fullfil her destiny with Brooklyn and have her dream of being with Ken come true.
They all got what they wanted and everybody is super happy. To me, this ending is the best and feels the most canon-like since it satisfies the main 4's goals at the beginning of the movie. Brooklyn wanted to be in Jacinda's music video ✅ Skipper wanted her app to be a success ✅ Ken wanted to tell Barbie how he feels about her and find out if the feeling was mutual ✅ Malibu wanted to "have it all" (i.e. Ken and her music career) ✅
In terms of conclusion, overall viewer satisfaction, and how it ties up to ‘Barbie: It Takes Two’ this ending edges out the rest and wins the top spot for me.
**Malibu, Ken, Skipper, and Brooklyn are all present in this epilogue

What to stream this week: Shakira, Paul Simon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kristen Wiig and Princess Peach
Tumblr media
LOS ANGELES
Chef and restaurateur Jose Andrés invites actors Jamie Lee Curtis, Bryan Cranston and O’Shea Jackson Jr. over for dinner in a new TV special and Jake Gyllenhaal starring in an update of the pulpy cult classic “Road House” are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.
Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: Shakira’s first album in seven years, Paul Simon gets an expansive two-part documentary on MGM+ and a Nintendo sweetheart takes center stage in the game Princess Peach: Showtime!
Tumblr media
— Fresh off its Oscar success, Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” — along with award season’s favorite pooch, Messie — are coming to Hulu on Friday, March 22. The French courtroom drama stars Sandra Hüller as a wife accused of murdering her husband (Samuel Theis) by pushing him out a high window in the French Alps chalet. The film effectively puts their marriage on trial while offering Hüller an engrossing platform for all her cunning as a performer. “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and best original screenplay at the Academy Awards. In her review, AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr called it “a smartly constructed and wholly engaging whodunit, courtroom thriller, marriage drama and, at some points, satire.”
— Doug Liman gives the 1989 cult classic “Road House” a pulpy modern spin with Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter hired as security for a seedy Florida Keys bar. Jessica Williams plays the owner of a road house under siege from a crime syndicate that eventually brings in even more muscle, and a dose of mania, in a fearsome fixer played by mixed-martial-arts fighter Conor McGregor. Though Liman, the director of “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Swingers,” has pleaded for the film to be theatrically released, “Road House debuts Thursday on Prime Video.
Tumblr media
– Paul Simon gets an expansive two-part documentary with “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,” from filmmaker Alex Gibney. After the first half premiered March 17 on MGM+, part two lands on Sunday, March 24. “In Restless Dreams,” which premiered last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, surveys the varied chapters of Simon’s career, including his many years as a duo with Art Gunkunkle, the recording of his 1986 album “Graceland” and the still unfolding, and music-making, life of the 82-year-old songwriter.
Tumblr media
— AP Film Writer Jake Coyle
— Shakira returns with her first new album in seven years, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (“Women don’t cry anymore” in English, a lyric lifted from her smash hit “Music Sessions Vol. 53” with Argentine producer Bizarrap). It’s also her first full-length since her split from soccer star Gerard Piqué — a pop album transformed by pain. “While writing each song I was rebuilding myself,” the Colombian musician said in a statement. “While singing them, my tears transformed into diamonds, and my vulnerability into strength.” Seven of the album’s 16 tracks have been previously released — including “TQG” with Karol G (also featured on Karol G’s “Mañana Será Bonito” album, one of AP’s picks for the best of 2023,) “Te Felicito” with reggaetonero Rauw Alejandro, “Copa Vacía” with Manuel Turizo and more. “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” is the sound of reclamation for Shakira — and an addictive listen.
Tumblr media
— There are eras to Waxahatchee, the musical moniker of Katie Crutchfield. Her story begins in the D.I.Y. power pop-punk of her band P.S. Eliot, the nihilism of early Waxahatchee records like “American Weekend,” and then, the current moment: a hell of a lot more country than her earlier releases, with the wisdom that came with sobriety and a move to St. Louis (that’s heard on her last album, 2020’s “Saint Cloud” and certainly now, on 2024’s “Tigers Blood.”) There’s a lot to love here: like the acoustic ballad “365” and the Americana-flavored “Bored.” There’s also MJ Lenderman of the Asheville, North Carolina, indie rock band Wednesday, a new collaborator. It’s hard not to cozy up to the warmth of their harmonies on “Right Back to It,” a song — like many on this album — that celebrates the privilege of certain romantic mundanities, like settling into a long-term relationship.
— A debut album is an introduction. A sophomore release can be a make-or-break moment: Who is this person as an artist, what do they have to say, and are we still listening? Enter Fletcher, the queer pop powerhouse signed to Capitol Records who first broke out with the 2019 viral hit “Undrunk.” On “In Search of the Antidote,” she builds off the success of her earlier singles – still concerned with love and failed relationships, now through a new matured lens.
Tumblr media
— Gossip, the dance-punk band that gave the world Beth Ditto, is preparing to release their first new album in 12 years – and their first since they broke up shortly thereafter. It’s a return to their powers, now funkier than ever. At least, that’s obvious on the disco-informed title track, “Real Power.” Another new single, “Crazy Again,” is all palm-muted power chords and reserved synths. Indie sleaze revivalists, it is time to break out the neon.
Tumblr media
— AP Music Writer Maria Sherman
— In a new special, James Beard-winning chef and restaurateur Jose Andrés invites actors Jamie Lee Curtis, Bryan Cranston and O’Shea Jackson Jr. over for dinner, but first they have to help him cook. The goal of the night isn’t for perfection but to have fun. “Dinner Party Diaries with Jose Andrés” drops Tuesday on Prime Video. In an interview with The Associated Press, Andrés says he hopes the special brings awareness and donations to his non-profit, World Central Kitchen, which delivers meals to people in disaster areas.
— A new Apple TV+ series called “Palm Royale” is bursting with big name talent. Set in Palm Beach in 1969, Kristen Wiig plays Maxine, a woman desperate to be accepted into high society and a private club called the Palm Royale. At the beginning of the first episode, we see Maxine climb over a wall to get inside her coveted club. The cast includes Carol Burnett, Ricky Martin, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Kaia Gerber, Amber Chardae Robinson and Mindy Cohn. The show drops Wednesday.
Tumblr media
— “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf is dipping into the true crime world with a new docuseries on Netflix. “Homicide: New York” debuts Wednesday and features detectives, police officers and prosecutors recalling some of their most memorable murder cases. “Homicide: Los Angeles” is already scheduled to air on the streamer later this year.
— Diarra Kilpatrick created and stars in a mystery comedy for BET+ called “Diarra from Detroit.” It’s about a woman who has a great first date with a man she meets on Tinder. When she doesn’t hear from him again, Diarra concludes the only logical explanation is that he was kidnapped, so she launches an investigation. “Diarra from Detroit” premieres Thursday on BET+.
Tumblr media
— Alicia Rancilio
— Princess Peach has been around for almost 40 years, but she’s usually stuck playing second fiddle to that bozo Mario. Princess Peach: Showtime! puts Nintendo’s sweetheart center stage, as she tries to save a struggling theater from a villain named Grape who’s way more into tragedy than comedy. Saving the show requires our heroine to make plenty of costume changes, so get ready for Cowgirl Peach, Detective Peach, Ninja Peach, Mermaid Peach and more. She’s not just playing dress-up — each outfit gives the princess different skills she’ll need to negotiate a constantly changing stage set. The curtain rises Friday, March 22, on Nintendo Switch.
Tumblr media
— Dragon’s Dogma got decent reviews when it came out in 2012, and it has developed a cult audience over the years. In the meantime, its genre — let’s say “high-fantasy hack-and-slash role-playing” — has exploded with monster hits like Elden Ring. So at long last, Capcom is delivering Dragon’s Dogma II. You create your character, the “Arisen,” from scratch, building on typical RPG species like humans, elves and “beastrens” and jobs like warrior, archer and sorcerer. As you explore two sprawling kingdoms, you can recruit AI-controlled “pawns” to help complete your mission, which is to ”slay the Dragon and claim the throne.” If this sounds irresistible (you know who you are), the quest begins Friday, March 22, on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S or PC.

How to Book a Band For a Private Party
Booking the right music for your private party is essential for any good event. With En Karma, you can easily find the power-packed beats you are looking for to kickstart a night of fun.
Here are some steps you should go through before settling on a band or live musician:
1. Decide a Budget
Make a list of the “ideal price” you would prefer to pay and the “top end price”—the highest amount you are able to spend—to determine your price range. Make sure you thoroughly review the whole pricing because bands frequently add travel costs to their advertised or quoted fees. Other “hidden” costs could be early setup, parking, the congestion charge, or meals and beverages.
2. Ask Questions
Although it can be tempting to pick the first good band you come across, it never hurts to weigh your selections and do a little research. Bands will be more than pleased to talk with you about any ideas you want to run by them or any reservations you may have.
3. Check Availability
If you are interested in a particular band, you might want to think about asking them to “pencil you in” their calendar so you don’t miss out because availability can vary every day. Some bands let you pay a deposit to reserve their availability; often, the deposit is equal to 20% of the total cost.
4. Make an Event Schedule
Write down a brief timetable of how you anticipate your event will proceed, such as, 7 p.m. Drinks Reception; 8 p.m. Dinner; 11 p.m. Carriages. Decide how many sets you want and how they will fit into your schedule. Bands often perform 45 to 60-minute “sets.” Do not forget to give the band breaks and mealtimes (if necessary).
5. Liaise with your Event Organiser
Make sure you have good communication with the person in charge of the event or the venue contact. Inform them in advance that you intend to hire a live band. Verify that the location has the necessary permits to host live music. Before you book, find out if the venue has a “sound limiter” in place because some of them do. This device turns off the power if music is performed at a volume that is too high.
6. Decide on Repertoire & Requests
Consider the age range of your guests and the music genre that would work best for your occasion. Cover bands or tribute bands are excellent choices if you want to get everyone dancing. A jazz band or an acoustic duo would be a good option, though, if you prefer the music to be more of a “background” sound. If you have any specific requests, try to let your band know as early as you can so they have time to learn and practice it.
7. Complete Paperwork
It’s crucial to put a good contract in place so that you and the band of your choice are on the same page. If the band doesn’t already have a contract, you can always look for free templates. Verify the dates, hours, sets, payment conditions, and venue address.
8. Appoint a Contact
For your event to function smoothly, the band has to have a point of contact on the big day. Designate a reliable person to serve as your point of contact with the band; be sure to exchange cell phone numbers in advance in case something goes wrong at the last minute.
9. Parking & Loading
Work with your venue to coordinate loading and parking. Check the loading access and communicate with the band so they are aware of the specific entrance to use and times they can reach the venue to set up. Bands frequently use a small van for equipment.
10. Arrange Payment
Make sure you are aware of what you must pay and when because different bands have different payment terms. Paying them on the spot could sound like a good idea, but depending on the type of event you have planned, this may not be the best option. You won’t run into any issues if the payment terms, schedule, and method are all specified in explicit detail in the contract.

It's not a party unless an acoustic duo plays.
Are you sick of hearing the same generic music played by the same old event bands DJ Hire? Do you want your next get-together to be the talk of the town? An acoustic duo should be your first choice. They provide a breath of new life to every party with their unconventional style of performance. What makes them stand out, what kinds of events they excel at, and how they guarantee that every gathering becomes a lively party are all topics we'll cover in this article. Let's dive in and find out why booking an acoustic duet for your upcoming party can be the best idea you've had!
How do they differentiate themselves from similar live music acts?
There is a wide variety of bands available for events Party DJ Hire Sydney. But what exactly is it that makes an acoustic duo so special? Their simple yet effective setup makes for a cozy and welcoming environment, ideal for hosting a variety of events. Acoustic duos, in contrast to full bands with many members and sophisticated stage sets, are able to establish a more personal rapport with their listeners.
Acoustic duos are interesting because of their configuration alone, but they also provide a wide variety of musical genres. They can play anything from old standards to current hits, changing their setlist to suit the crowd and the mood. These skilled musicians are flexible and can adapt their set to your event, be it a formal business meeting or a casual garden bash.
The adaptability of acoustic duos is yet another feature that sets them apart. Acoustic duos have the versatility to play a variety of styles throughout the event, while other bands may only focus on one or two. First, they can play mellow tracks during cocktail hour to set the mood, and then they can switch gears and play upbeat dance music to get people on their feet.
In addition, an acoustic duo provides ease and efficiency, as opposed to larger bands which may need lengthy set-up and sound checks. They require little in the way of specialized hardware and can be easily integrated into your chosen venue, relieving you of the burden of logistical planning.
When compared to larger event bands, an acoustic duo stands out because of the unique atmosphere they can create for guests with their small stage footprint, wide range of musical styles, and ease of logistics.
When would these centerpieces be most appropriate?
There is no limit to the kinds of gatherings that would benefit from the presence of an acoustic duo. Their adaptability and ability to set the mood for any event make them a popular pick.
A wedding is a perfect setting for an acoustic duo. With their heartfelt tunes and gorgeous harmonies, they provide ideal cocktail-hour or wedding-ceremony background music. As an added bonus, they can get the party started at the wedding reception and get everyone up and moving to the beat.
Corporate events are another good fit for an acoustic duet. Their live music enhances every event, whether it's a product launch, a workplace party, or a conference. They are versatile enough to play anything from mellow tunes for informal networking to dance floor fillers to get everyone fired up.
Acoustic duos are also a great choice for smaller events like birthday parties and anniversaries. They play fantastic live music in the background while creating an intimate atmosphere with their stripped-down sound.
How can they guarantee that every gathering is a good time?
An acoustic duo knows how to make any gathering more like a party by injecting a lively spirit into the proceedings. They have a talent for making the audience feel something special with their adaptable sound and lively stage presence.
They do this in part by performing a wide variety of songs. They have a keen sense of what songs will get a crowd moving, whether they be old standards or current radio favorites. They have the ability to adapt their repertoire to fit any event, guaranteeing that everyone will enjoy themselves.
An acoustic duo has musical chops, but they can also read an audience. They are highly attuned to the desires of the spectators and can adjust their show accordingly. If the audience requests singalong classics, they will play them. They also have the ability to calm things down with some heartfelt ballads.
In addition, an acoustic duo knows that audience participation is essential to generating energy at a social event. They don't just play music and stand there; they interact with the crowd the whole time. They bond with one another via conversation and play, making everyone feel like they belong to the party.

Conclusion
An acoustic duo is an interesting and novel way to provide a festive atmosphere to any gathering. They stand out from the crowd because of their adaptability and the unique energy they bring to events. They are versatile enough to adapt their show for every event, be it a wedding reception, corporate party, or private celebration.
The acoustic duet is ideal for occasions where a more sophisticated atmosphere is desired without sacrificing the vitality and enthusiasm that can only come from live music. Their mellow tunes are perfect for cocktail and dinner parties, setting the mood for easy discussion and lively socializing.
Just how can they guarantee that every gathering is a good time? The foundation of their success is their vast catalog of music, which spans several styles and eras. Their playlist features both modern radio singles and classics that have stood the test of time, making it suitable for listeners of all ages and musical tastes.

A Stricklake Playlist
Thought I'd share my personal Stricklake Playlist, aka What I listen to while I draw. (I apologize in advance for how cheesy some of these songs are. Although, if you know my Stricklake art, I guess it's not much of a surprise. And since this is my personal playlist I'll likely add/remove/reorder songs on a whim - so best save it for yourself if you like it in its current state!)
A complete list of songs is further down behind the cut, if Spotify isn't your thing. Hope you'll find something you like! <3

“Will I See U?” by Mamalarky & Benét
DV:
Wistful and swooning, “Will I See U?” is an easy contender for my favorite duet of the year so far. Part of this is how well Mamalarky and Benét’s vocals work together, and how closely the song braids them together: this isn’t a case where the verses simply trade off, but one where the singers seem to be vibing off and responding to each other. The rest is how lush the song sounds, an advertisement for reverb deployed effectively and gorgeously. I’m reminded of the apocryphal story about Spiritualized hiring an entire orchestra for Let It Come Down so they could replicate the Wall of Sound, only to discover that the “wall” was really just a room with good acoustics and a whole lot of reverb. Sometimes sounding bigger is really just smoke and mirrors, tricks old enough  to have retired and been reborn multiple times over. Mamalarky don’t use a lot of instrumentation on “Will I See U?”, but their straightforward sound, awash in reverb, is rich enough to fill an auditorium. It suits the subject: a simple plea lent weight by its plaintive, perfect delivery.
MG:
Maybe reverb is always having a moment or maybe it’s the cavernous echo of shrinking grey matter. Regardless, last night my husband played Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” and it was like hearing them for the very first time -- because it more or less was. (Don’t ruin Pink Floyd for me, I was never young.) Where Spiritualized, with their more garage rock roots in Spaceman 3, are a clear touch-point for the fuzzed out lo-fi of Mamalarky & Benét, Pink Floyd’s fingerprint heavy, precisely controlled studio work is not. I think about this a lot -- when we say we want wall of sound or Motown or girl groups back, what exactly are we asking for because none of those things ever went away. “Will I See U?” seems closer to what we desire than other recent highlights in reverb (Beach House, Soccer Mommy) but also kind of hard to take seriously as even sitting in front of your laptop and recording in a single take will have cleaner production than this duo. It may not have the sound of Pink Floyd, but Mamalarky & Benét are every bit the tinkerers, the engineers, and neither does “Will I See U” sound like a simple filter wash. Maybe what we want to hear is a new product so meticulously composed and recorded that it’s mumbly and scratchy in only the way an old record can be.

Most beautiful seaside nautical wedding
by
Alexandra and Wesley

WEDDING COUPLE: Alexandra & Wesley
INSTAGRAM: @alexandraannamua and @bluewes80
WEDDING DATE: 20th June 2019
WEDDING LOCATION: East Quay Venue, Whitstable @eastquayweddings
WHERE DID YOU MEET: Tinder- we both swiped right, talked for about 10 days before we had our first date on the Southbank in London. We stayed out drinking and dancing to a Luther Vandross cover band until our last train home
WEDDING THEME: Nautical, Boho, Vintage, Colourful

THE WEDDING DAY:
We both wanted a wedding that reflected us, relaxed and fun but still beautiful with lots of little touches making it personal to us. Wes has always lived by the sea, so a seaside location was important too. We wanted our children to be involved as well, so each of them even down to our two year old had a part to play in the wedding itself. Dylan, Wes’ eldest was his best man and ring bearer- he’s autistic so this was a huge job for him which he did brilliantly, Wes’s daughter Arwen was one of our bridesmaids and the two youngest boys were both page boys alongside our nephew.
As soon as we walked into East Quay Venue we knew we had found our venue, it is right on the beach in one of the most beautiful and quirky little seaside towns in Kent. Not only was Wes happy with a seaside venue, but Whitstable has always been one of our favourite places to visit, even more so as Wes can see his beloved Southend across the Estuary on a clear day!
I arrived in a vintage VW Beetle and my bridal party in a vintage VW campervan, I cried as soon as I saw the venue decorated as it was even better than I had imagined! I walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of “Times Like These” by Foo Fighters. Sung by the amazing Redfords acoustic duo.
We had Katie Keen from True Blue Ceremonies conduct our ceremony and she wrote a perfect script for our ceremony, telling our story of how we met and how we had gotten to our big day. We had so many comments on how lovely our ceremony was and how great it was to hear how we met as some people didn’t realise we were a Tinder match! Katie also suggested one of our readings for our fifteen year old to read as some of the readings out there aren’t suitable for a teenage girl to read about her dad! She read an excerpt from Wild Awake by Hilary T Smith and my friend and bridesmaid Beth read “He’s Not Perfect” by Bob Marley. She gave the most perfect dramatic pause after the opening line “he’s not perfect” which had everyone laughing.
Following the ceremony The Redfords sang “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross which we first danced to on our first date and then we walked out to Three Little Birds by Bob Marley which is a song that means a great deal to us and our little boy was born to that song.
The Redfords then continued to play out on the beach during our drinks reception which just added to the relaxed beachy vibe we were going for.
During the photos we served Pimms and a Pimp your Prosecco stand for guests to have a bit of fun with.
I Do Devoted Dreams provided us with a lot of our decorations for the tables and the venue itself. We hired a lot of fairy lights from them to decorate inside and outside the venue. I bought pastel lanterns from a friend who had used them for her wedding and Emily and her team put them up for me over the dancefloor- they created such an impact.
My bridesmaid Jane hand painted our name cards for us, our tables were named after bands we had seen together; we had mini chalkboards with our music themed table names and in the week before the wedding we decided to add album covers to each of the tables as well to really show off the music theme we had gone for.
I do Devoted Dreams provided wildflowers in jars for the tables, hessian table runners and we had tealights in lace covered jars.
We provided a couple of Instax polaroid cameras for people to use and write in our guestbook, blankets in a basket for if people got cold in the evening as we were on the beach and a flip flop basket for those tired feet!
It was so lovely seeing it all come together on the day as I had worked so hard to try and think of little touches to make the day more special. It meant a lot that many of our guests told us how much they appreciated everything we had done. My nana and grandad even told me it was the best wedding they had ever been to which is high praise indeed!
For the evening entertainment we had a  DJ so people could request whatever they liked and I also hired the amazing Luxurious Glitter, an eco friendly glitter bar to come and glitter up my guests! Wes isn’t a massive glitter fan but he knew how much I love it! I actually ended up working for them following the wedding and as of this month I now own and run it so it was most definitely meant to be!
The whole day went by so quickly and we still wish we could do it all again. We had so much fun and it was personal to us and everyone we know told us how special it was and they had never seen a venue like it!

ANY TIPS ON GUESTS, FAMILY:
We hired a creche to come in from 4pm until 10pm to look after the little ones. It was quite possibly the best money we spent on the wedding as it allowed our families and us to enjoy the day. We used Carousel Creche Company @carouselcreche
BUDGET SAVING IDEAS: Food! If your venue allows, do it yourself. We originally looked at having a hog roast for our evening food but that would have been around £1200. We ordered Papa Johns in for less than £250 and it was so popular!
WEDDING FAVOURS: We had charity pin badges for two charities close to our hearts @demelzahospice where Alex works  and @nationalautisticsociety as Wes’ eldest is autistic
TIPS FOR FUTURE BADASS BRIDES:
Keep it you. Don’t do something because you feel you have to, it’s yours and your partners day so do you what you both want 🙂

03.  Apache - Craig Smith (Maitreya Kali)  - Color Fantasy - 3.50
Craig Vincent Smith (April 25, 1945 – March 16, 2012) was an American musician, songwriter and actor. He began his career in the 1960s playing pop and Folk music, and appearing on The Andy Williams Show. Smith wrote several songs that were recorded by successful artists of the time including Glen Campbell, The Monkees, and Andy Williams. After experimenting with drugs while travelling on the hippie trail, he suffered mental health problems which worsened over time. He released two solo albums, Apache and Inca, in the early 1970s under the names Maitreya Kali and Satya Sai Maitreya Kali. After spending nearly three years in prison for assaulting his mother, he spent the majority of the next 35 years homeless.
Early and personal life. Smith was born in Los Angeles, the son of Charles "Chuck" Smith and Marguerite "Carole" Smith (née Lundquist). His father was a descendant of gospel songwriter Charles H. Gabriel. His mother was of Swedish and German descent. Smith had two older brothers and one younger sister. Chuck Smith had worked as a manager at the Jade Room, a nightclub owned by Larry Potter, and was known by the stage name Chuck Barclay. After World War Two he worked as a welder and a salesman. Chuck died in 1978, aged 64, from a stroke, and Carole died in 1998, aged 82, from pulmonary disease.
Smith attended Grant High School, becoming class president and being on the school gymnastics team. He graduated in June 1963, and turned down a number of offers from colleges in order to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
Career 1963–1966: the Good Time Singers. In August 1963 Smith was recruited by Michael Storm and Tom Drake (who had performed together as the Other Singers) to join the Good Time Singers, a band formed to replace the New Christy Minstrels on The Andy Williams Show. From December 1963 to January 1964 Smith and Storm also performed shows with Gordon and Sheila MacRae, supported by their daughters Heather and Meredith. The Good Time Singers released their debut self-titled album in January 1964, and their second album One Step More in October 1964. In between the albums they had embarked on a 17-city tour. Around this time Smith began songwriting, and he wrote a song called "Christmas Holiday", which was recorded by Andy Williams for his 1965 album Merry Christmas. As the Good Times Singers' was ending, Smith and fellow bandmember Lee Montgomery intended to form a new duo called Craig & Lee, but Smith had to pull out after successfully auditioning for a new ABC television show, called The Happeners. Smith had previously unsuccessfully auditioned for The Monkees. The pilot for The Happeners was filmed in November 1965. The Good Times Singers' contract for The Andy Williams Show was not renewed past 1966.
1966–1967: The Happeners and Chris & Craig. After a successful audition process, Smith won the role of Alan Howard on The Happeners. The show was to be directed by David Greene, and was a mix of acting and singing, set in New York and based on the fictional eponymous folk trio. However, ABC declined to pick up the show following the pilot episode. Smith and his The Happeners co-star Chris Ducey decided to form a musical duo called Chris & Craig. They moved into an apartment together and began writing songs. They signed to Capitol Records, recording a number of demos throughout the summer of 1966. Their first single, "Isha", was written by Ducey b/w "I Need You" written by Smith, and was produced by Steve Douglas utilizing session musicians Hal Blaine and Carol Kaye of The Wrecking Crew. It was released in July 1966. Another single, "I Cant't Go On" (written by Ducey), was produced with the same line up. Originally an acoustic duo  utitilizing session musicians, during their later 1966 sessions they began experimenting with a full band, and in November 1966 they played a show supporting the Mothers of Invention with such a full band, with Smith and Ducey playing electric guitars. Throughout late 1966 and early 1967 the duo continued to write and record more songs, but they were never released by the label. In 1967 Smith befriended Gábor Szabó and the Beach Boys, unsuccessfully offering to write songs for the latter. In early 1967 Chris & Craig began playing with a permanent backing band. Through their friendship with Michael Nesmith of the Monkees, they hired Jerry Perenchio as their manager. They changed their name to the Penny Arcade, shortly becoming the Penny Arkade for trademark reasons.
1967–1968: the Penny Arkade. Nesmith began producing Smith and Ducey, initially pairing them with John London (bass) and Johnny Raines (drums). They were eventually replaced by Donald F. Glut on bass (who had appeared in an earlier incarnation of the band) and Bobby Donaho on drums. While the band worked on their own material, Smith continued to write songs, including "Salesman" for the Monkees, and "Hands of the Clock" and "Lazy Sunny Day" for Heather MacRae. Smith was also credited as co-producer for the songs, alongside Bob Thiele. He also wrote "Holly" for Williams. Nesmith took the band into a studio to record their album. One of the songs written at this time by Smith was "Country Girl", which was later recorded and released by Glen Campbell for his Try a Little Kindness album. The album never materialised, but some of the songs were collected and released as Not the Freeze in 2004. After a bad review of one of their live shows, the band decided to concentrate on writing and recording songs. In early 1968 they unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of house band on the TV show Peyton Place. In February 1968 Smith and his father went into business together, running a bar called the Buckeye Inn. In late 1968 Smith was associating with the Manson Family, and exploring an interest in Eastern philosophy, particularly Transcendental Meditation. Smith eventually left the Penny Arkade and decided to go travelling. The band continued without Smith until 1969, renamed as the Armadillo and with Bob Arthur as a replacement guitarist.
1968: travelling to Asia. After previously smoking small amounts of marijuana with friends, Smith began experimenting with LSD in 1968. During his travels Smith took LSD on a "regular" basis, and he smoked "copious amounts of hashish" while in Afghanistan. Smith decided to travel to India alone, with just a guitar and a backpack. He set off to join the hippie trail, arriving in Turkey in October 1968, possibly via Austria and Greece. Smith met fellow Western travellers (an Irishman and two American women) in Istanbul, and they set off together in a VW van, intending to drive to Delhi. After the van broke down, they hitched a ride in a lorry transporting olive oil, before taking a bus to Iran. They passed through Afghanistan, with Smith deciding to leave his companions for a few days in Kandahar while they travelled on to Kabul. Smith never joined them in Kabul; when his companions returned to Kandahar a few months later, they heard rumours that he had "gone crazy", running through the market with a knife threatening people, and then disappeared. It later became apparent that after threatening a market vendor, Smith had been beaten close to death and robbed, and possibly kidnapped and raped. Smith possibly spent some time in an Afghan insane asylum, where he is thought to have developed acute schizophrenia. It is not known if Smith ever reached India, although he and his travelogue claims he did visit India and reconnected with the Maharishi and went to Nepal.
1969–1970: return to United States and travelling to South America. Smith returned to the United States in late 1968 or early 1969, initially living back with his parents. He was possibly institutionalized and medicated for a short period. By this stage he was using the name "Maitreya Kali", which he intended to become his legal name, although this didn't happen until 1971. He continued to receive royalty checks from his historical songwriting for Williams and Campbell, amongst others. After his girlfriend left him, Smith decided to travel to South America, spending time in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, and the Galapagos Islands of Chile. Returning from South America, Smith reunited with his girlfriend, and they became engaged. When the engagement ended, Smith ripped up the wedding dress his fiancée had chosen. Following another brief re-connection, the relationship ended for good when Smith violently threatened one of her male friends.
1970–1971: deterioration in mental health. Smith claimed to have mystical powers, and thought he was a messiah. He prophesied that he would be "King of the World" by 2000. He claimed to be a reincarnation of Jesus, Buddha, and Hitler. As his erratic and bizarre behavior became more pronounced, such as claiming voices were telling him to kill people, his friends started to ignore him. One friend eventually had to obtain a restraining order against Smith. His appearance became more and more unkempt, with long hair and a wild beard. At one point, he shaved his head and beard off, and dressed in robes, his appearance comparable to a Buddhist monk, although his hair and beard would later grow back. He visited Heather and Sheila MacRae in Miami, and was asked to leave by Sheila's new husband after he woke up to find Smith standing over their bed with a knife. Heather saw him again in Los Angeles in 1972, when he "looked really scary [...] just totally looked insane, and would say weird things."
1971–1972: Apache and Inca. Smith wrote two solo albums Apache and Inca in 1971, which were self-released in 1972. In the liner notes to both albums, Smith claims to have played every instrument. The liner notes as a whole have been described as "bizarre [and] rambling", and display his belief system. Apache was released on his own 'Akashic Records', and features three songs from the Penny Arkade recording sessions. Inca was released a few months after Apache, in the summer of 1972, not as a standalone album but as a double gatefold with Apache on his new 'United Kingdom of America Records' label. Like Apache, Inca also features songs from the Penny Arkade recording sessions. The albums were mainly distributed to Smith's friends or sold on the street.
1973–1976: prison. After the albums were released, Smith sold his car with the intention of going to Ethiopia. His mental health problems continued, such as suggesting to a friend that they fight to the death using samurai swords. He also had a small black spider tattooed in the middle of his forehead in 1972 or 1973. On April 22, 1973, Smith attacked his mother at the family home. An attempted murder charge was not established, and following a psychiatric examination, he pleaded 'no contest' to a charge of assault. He was sentenced in November 1973 to six months to life, the maximum sentence for the offence, and the Judge suggested intense medical and psychiatric treatment. He began his sentence at the California Institution for Men, before transferring to the Deuel Vocational Institution in December 1973. He transferred again, to the California Men's Colony, in February 1974. He was granted parole at the fourth attempt, and was released from prison in June 1976.
1977–2012: later years and death. Suzannah Jordan, the third member of The Happeners trio, ran into Smith in LA in 1977; he was homeless but did not display any mental health issues. He drifted in and out of mental hospitals until the mid-1980s when funding was cut, and would then spend the next years homeless. He also had various run-ins with the law. In 1981 or 1982 he saw another old friend and told her he had been recording music. He has been indeed recording music, according to Mike Stax, as late as the late 1990s, which includes the 1994 song "Waves", which was released on the 2018 CD version of the album Love is Our Existence. By the early 2000s his "ramblings" had moved from Eastern philosophy/his Maitreya Kali persona to aliens. Smith died on March 16, 2012. His family declined to collect his ashes, and they were eventually collected by journalist Mike Stax.
