The Important Role of Social Workers in Substance Abuse Recovery
Substance abuse recovery is a difficult journey, and social workers play an important role in helping individuals to navigate this path. Their role is not limited to providing immediate care; they provide holistic, empathetic support that addresses the emotional, social, and psychological aspects of addiction. Social workers involve clients in one-on-one counseling, providing a safe space for individuals to confront their struggles and develop coping strategies.
However, support doesn't end here. Social workers also develop treatment plans based on each individual's specific needs, linking them to crucial resources such as support groups, rehabilitation centers, and employment programs. They work extensively with families, teaching them how to support their loved ones through recovery and eliminate stigma that surrounds a diagnosis of substance use disorders.
Social workers do direct intervention, which may also include advocating for changes at the systemic level so that there is better access to addiction services and long-term recovery policies. By being very empowering and resilient, social workers help rebuild people's lives and reintegrate them back into society.
It is through such work that social workers contribute to substance abuse recovery. Not only does it help the individual recover, but it also fosters a healthier and supportive community. Recovery is made possible through such support.

Expressive Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that involves the use of creative mediums to enable a person to express their experiences and feelings in a nonverbal manner. It can involve painting, drawing, music, dancing, journaling, as well as other aesthetic experiences.
It's tailored specifically for those who find it difficult to express themselves via verbal communication. Whether you're fighting addiction or coping with emotional trauma, this therapy releases internal conflict in a non-combative manner, allowing you to acquire awareness about your own emotional reality.

Accepting Unity and Hope- A New Year Message from Brian Markle Ottawa
As we stand at the threshold of a new year, Pastor Brian Matthew Markle beckons the community to embark on this journey with optimism and a collective spirit of togetherness.
With hope as our guide and unity as our strength, let us embrace the promise of positive change that lies ahead.
In reflecting upon the trials and triumphs of the past year in Ottawa, Pastor Brian Matthew Markle emerges as a beacon of resilience and perseverance.
Amidst the tumultuous landscape of online cyberbullying, Pastor Markle has weathered a relentless storm of lies and deceit, hindering his ability to effectively communicate his message.
For over a decade, an online cyberbully from the upper Ottawa Valley has posed a persistent threat to Pastor Markle and his family, yet he has remained steadfast in his resolve to confront and overcome these challenges.
Through unwavering faith and an unyielding commitment to his calling, Pastor Markle has continued to stand firm in his convictions.
Drawing strength from the grace of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ, he has persevered in the face of adversity, refusing to be deterred from his mission.
Looking forward, Pastor Markle remains resolute in his dedication to serving the community.
In collaboration with addiction and mental health professionals, he seeks to provide vital support and assistance to those in need, offering hope and healing to individuals and families across Ottawa and the upper Ottawa Valley.
Addressing the pressing issue of homelessness remains a central focus for Pastor Markle in the coming year, as he believes that every person deserves a place to call home in our country.
Central to Pastor Markle's life's work is his ongoing involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), where he finds purpose and fulfillment in guiding fellow alcoholics towards peace and recovery within the program.
Guided by the timeless wisdom of scripture, Pastor Markle finds solace and inspiration in the words of the Bible, which serve as his guiding principles:
Matthew 17:20: “Nothing will be impossible.” Matthew 19:26: “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Mark 10:27: “With men it is impossible, but not with God.” Luke 1:37: “With God nothing will be impossible.”
These passages encapsulate Pastor Markle's unshakeable belief in the transformative power of faith and the boundless possibilities that unfold when we place our trust in God.
As we journey forward into the spring and summer of 2024, Pastor Brian Markle extends his heartfelt wishes for a season filled with safety, sobriety, and happiness to all.
Yours in faith and service,
Pastor Brian Markle.

Drugs to treat alcohol addiction are underused
Tumblr media
Today, we're diving into a topic that affects millions of lives across the United States – alcohol addiction. But, hang on, this isn't a doom and gloom story. We've got some exciting news to share about how new medications might just be the game-changer we've been waiting for. So, grab a cup of your favorite beverage and let's talk about how these medications are turning the tide against alcohol addiction. A Silent Struggle: Picture this: Nearly 30 million Americans silently wrestling with a challenge that's impacting their lives in a big way. That challenge is alcohol addiction, and it's more common than you might think. For many, it's a battle that's hard to talk about, and that's why we're here – to shed some light on the situation. The Hidden Toll: Alcohol-related causes claim over 140,000 lives each year in the U.S. That's a staggering number, and what makes it even more heartbreaking is that so much of this suffering could have been prevented. Addiction to alcohol doesn't just affect the individual; it ripples through families and communities, leaving a trail of heartache. Meet the Lifesavers: Now, let's talk about something promising. For decades, medications have existed to help individuals in their fight against alcohol addiction. Some of these superheroes include Disulfiram, Naltrexone, and Acamprosate. They might not wear capes, but they have their own unique powers. Disulfiram, known as Antabuse, is like the friendly warning sign your body needs. It makes you feel unwell when you have that drink, which can be a powerful deterrent. Naltrexone and Acamprosate are there to ease cravings and help folks through withdrawal. They may not be miracle cures, but they work fairly well for many. A Hidden Treasure: Here's the kicker: These medications are as effective for alcoholism as some well-known drugs are for depression. Yet, they remain underused. Less than 2% of people with alcohol-use disorder report using any medication. Compare that to 22% of those with opioid problems and over half of those with depression who take prescription drugs. So, what's holding us back? The Knowledge Gap: One of the reasons behind this underutilization is a knowledge gap. Many healthcare practitioners aren't fully aware of these medications or how to use them effectively. It's like having a toolbox full of life-saving tools but not knowing how to use them. Lorenzo Leggio, from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, explains it well. He says, "You need as many medications as possible because some will work for some people but not others." It's all about finding the right key to unlock the door to recovery. Seeking Help: Here's another tough nut to crack: Only 7% of those struggling with alcohol-use disorder seek any form of treatment. Some of them might not even know that these medications exist. Imagine waiting ten years before getting the help you need – that's a long time to suffer in silence. A Ray of Hope: But don't lose hope just yet. Enter Semaglutides, the new kids on the block. You might have heard of them as Ozempic and Wegovy, popular drugs for treating diabetes and obesity. They're like the fresh breeze of hope that's blowing through the world of alcohol addiction treatment. Changing the Game: People who've used Semaglutides have reported fewer alcohol cravings. Even preclinical trials on our furry friends, rats and monkeys, suggest that these medications could be a game-changer. Of course, anecdotes and animal trials aren't enough to make a final call, but the good news is that human clinical trials are underway. A Prozac Moment for Addiction: Kyle Simmons, a pharmacology professor at Oklahoma State University, believes these medications could be the "Prozac moment" for addiction treatment. Back in the day, depression drugs were often reserved for the most severe cases due to their side effects. When Prozac came along, it changed the game. Doctors became more comfortable prescribing these drugs, and patients started asking for them. The popularity of Ozempic and Wegovy could do the same for alcohol addiction treatment if the FDA gives the green light. Patient Optimism: Dr. Simmons is excited about Semaglutide's potential, but he urges patience. We're talking about your health here, and rushing things isn't a good idea. His study's results won't be available for another two years. But the good news is, you don't have to wait to get help. A New Beginning: So, there you have it, folks. We've discussed the underuse of medications for alcohol addiction treatment, but we've also talked about the hope on the horizon. It's not just a story of statistics and challenges; it's a story of resilience, awareness, and the potential for a brighter future. Closing Thoughts: Let's remember that you're never alone in this journey. There are healthcare professionals, support groups, and, yes, medications that can help. The key is spreading the word, raising awareness, and having conversations like this one. Change is possible, and sometimes, it starts with a friendly chat over a cup of coffee. What is alcohol-use disorder, and how is it different from occasional drinking? Alcohol-use disorder, often referred to as alcoholism, is a chronic condition characterized by an inability to control alcohol consumption despite negative consequences. It's more than just occasional drinking; it involves a compulsive need for alcohol, withdrawal symptoms, and a negative impact on daily life. Are these medications for alcohol addiction a replacement for therapy or counseling? Medications are often used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for alcohol addiction. They can help reduce cravings and make it easier to engage in therapy and counseling. However, therapy and support groups are important components of recovery. How can I find a healthcare provider who is knowledgeable about these medications for alcohol addiction treatment? You can start by talking to your primary care physician or seeking a referral to a specialist in addiction medicine. They can provide information about available treatment options and guide you through the process. Read the full article

Addiction recovery generally starts with one important step: Medical Detox Florida. It’s when your body begins to cleanse itself of the substances and stabilize both physically and emotionally. Medical Detox Florida is not, however, merely about getting the drugs or alcohol out of one’s system. It is a supervised medical process that ensures this stage is safe, under control, and as comfortable as it can be.
Most people believe they can just quit cold turkey at home. The reality, however, is that it is unsafe and, in the worst instances, life-threatening. That’s why Medical Detox Florida programs are so important. They provide the medical support your body needs to cope with the symptoms of withdrawal and keep you safe along the way.

💭 Things I Wish I Knew Before Recovery
Tumblr media
💭 Things I Wish I Knew Before Recovery (and maybe you need to hear, too)
You don’t need to hit rock bottom to ask for help.
Relapsing doesn’t mean you failed — it means you’re human.
It’s okay if healing feels boring sometimes.
You won’t always be motivated. That’s why we build discipline and support.
Crying in therapy doesn’t make you weak.
Forgiving yourself takes time — and that’s okay.
Recovery isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about remembering who you were before the pain.
At Ona Treatment Center, we walk this journey with you — not just through detox or a 30-day program, but through real, lasting recovery.
We specialize in dual diagnosis treatment — helping people who are battling both addiction and mental health struggles like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or trauma.
💚 Here’s what you’ll find at Ona: 🏞️ A peaceful 250-acre campus in Northern California 🧠 Trauma-informed therapy + holistic healing 🫂 Real people who actually listen and care 🧘‍♀️ Mindfulness, movement, and nature-based healing 🔁 Aftercare support so you never feel alone again
📞 Call us: (530) 869-6163 🌐 Visit: onatreatmentcenter.com
If you’re thinking about getting help, this is your sign: You’re allowed to begin again. And again. And again.
