After about a decade of being on and off with the minis, I finally got a Sororitas squad and a Cadian shock troop squad. I started with the Sister Superior from the Sororitas squad, and will finish out her squad. I am glad to have a basis for an Imperium combined front in the works and I plan to update as I finish the minis over time! Anyways, Sister Superior and two Leman Russ tanks on the line.
I don't plan to play the tabletop, I just want to build the minis and have fun painting

Edit: totally forgot to tag the OC’s creator, my wife @valhallasoutlaw. the two Astartes are hers (Ajax and Tertius) and Delphine is my Adepta Sororitas OC. Jens does great art of them all so go check it out :)

I want to start uploading battle reports for a crusade I’m playing at my local game store! Partially to keep my momentum up and to get more into the 40K community here!! …. I’m tired of reddit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
————————————————————————
Game 1 - 750 pts - Mission: Scattered Supplies
Adepta Sororitas vs Death Guard
20 - 30
Unfortunately starting out with a loss but it was an overall fun game! I pushed hard in the first half but my experienced partner was helping my new opponent to beat my ass. >:(
Tumblr media
————————————————————————
Game 2 - 750 pts - Mission: Secure the Tunnels
Adepta Sororitas vs Tau
50 - 50
A very, very fun tie where both of us left happy and satisfied!! My opponent was very nice, he had a background in the tournament scene but was looking for some more casual play. This mission would have been a great one for sisters if I had a higher point count. We are playing two games at 750, four at 1000, four at 1500, and four at 2000. I know it’s not how the official crusade rules but I’ve been really liking the weekly matched games.
————————————————————————
Game 3 - 1000 pts - Mission: Deference Nexus
Adepta Sororitas vs Tyranids
30 - 45
Bruh I lost so BAD. I really learned a lot about hoard armies in this game and I over prepared for psychic push back. I still felt like it was worthwhile but I was not proud of how I played.
————————————————————————
Game 4 - 1000 pts - Mission: I don’t remember but it was a weird diagonal corner deployment
Adepta Sororitas vs ORKZ
80 - 15
First sisters win!! FOR THE EMPEROR! This was such a fun game not because I won, I promise it felt much closer than the score my reflect. My opponent was so nice, every orkz player is so kind and just there to have a good time and he was no exception! He told me he had some old metal sisters from 2nd edition he might finally go back to working on after learning how cool they are in 10th edition! I even bought a Kommandos kill team off of him!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
————————————————————————
Game 5 - 1000 pts - Mission: Polarizing Energies
Adepta Sororitas vs Dark Angels
55 - 25
Little winning streak? This week we were doing in-fighting matches! There are sooo many Dark Angels in this crusade because of the new supplement but it’s not aiding them too much. Oh dude bros, they will never cease underestimating femme players and sisters as an army then be salty!!
————————————————————————
NEXT WEEK….. more nids!

Warhammer 40,000 Adepta Sororitas Changes for June 20, 2024
The additional faction post was getting monstrous, so I'm just going to give each faction their own post. It's genuinely impressive just how many changes and clarifications GW has made for this new season.
Sisters have been running fairly strong since the beginning of the edition, often skating by with a good win rate but not so good as to demand nerfs. Their Index was filled with powerful rules balanced out by relatively weak datasheets. Combined with fantastic looking minis that are still relatively new, this had lead to an increase of Sisters players overtime. Currently, Stat Check has them sitting pretty at a 53% win rate with 7% player representation. Still they've only had 2 major event wins since the last balance pass, indicating that Sisters may struggle against more powerful factions played by their best players.
Now their Codex has dropped and their rules are arguably even more powerful. Josh and Kenny mentioned that there might be a few nerfs considering the increased power in the Codex, but I'm not expecting to see anything in the Dataslate itself.
And yep. Just a big ol' "None."
They did get some FAQs and Errata. Suffering and Sacrifice got fixed to only effecting models in range, not units. Miracle dice have been confirmed to be useable on re-rolls and aren't kept when you re-roll a roll (such as trying to re-roll a 1 for your second die on a charge roll.) Relics of Matriarchs has also been confirmed to not allow you to substitute two dice in a roll. I don't know who was trying to claim that you don't gain Miracle dice until the end of the phase, but GW has confirmed it's when the unit is destroyed. All and all this just fixes the one obvious exploit in the Codex and clarifies a few miracle dice mechanics.
But the MFM is a different story. That is a lot of red.
We also have a new color here. The header for the Army of Faith enhancements is orange. I guess this is the color to call attention to changes while noting there are both nerfs and buffs. The sole buff to the Codex is here, with Litanies of Faith going down to 10 points.
But these are nerfs from the Codex point values of course. Pre-Codex is a much different story. First, a little good news. Arco-flagellants have actually dropped a pts per model and the Mantle of Ophelia and Saintly Example are at their pre-codex pts. By contrast Dominions and Paragon Warsuits have actually both gone up in pts despite being grey. Some of these are significant changes from their pre-codex values. Many of these units have increased by 50% or more! So while Sisters have strong new rules, they're going to be starting with way less army using them. Honestly I'll be surprised if we don't see Sisters fall a bit in the ranking from how big these points changes are.

A Warhammer 40K FanFic
Author's note: This is strictly for fun. I have my Warhammer-loving partner proofread and edit my chapters. If he says it is good, then it's good by the only person's standards I wish to meet. Lyra and Reid are our own characters based on us.
Chapter 1: Survivors
Roars and harsh scraping of metal erupted through the blood-red, dusty sky as a large number of grotesque soldiers clad in light armor, welding guns, and blades rushed the wide-open field littered with corpses and debris from an excruciatingly long battle. Blood pumped adrenaline into the opposing Adeptas Sororitas donned in power armor as she stared the enemy in the face, pulling the trigger on her bolt pistol and taking out what man she could. If she was going down, she was taking as many as she could with her. It was not until a split second later that she noticed movement several feet away on her side of the battlefield. Cutting her eyes, she saw it was an Imperial Guardsman, but she could not tell what condition he was in. All she could see from where she stood was a soldier whose olive-green trench coat was caked in blood whether it was his own or the enemy. Regardless, if he was still moving, he could still fight.
In a quick dash, she moved to her allies’ side giving him enough cover fire to get on his feet. It was as if he was bestowed a blessing he did not deserve as he stared up at her for a brief moment through his gas mask. It was clear what had happened now as he looked around at the massacre. Their entire squad was obliterated and they were the last two survivors. The Kriegsman jumped to his feet, snatched his lasrifle from the ground, and took aim. One, two, five, several men shot and downed but it still was not enough for them to back off. The woman noticed one of the opposing Ogryns ready his grenade launcher and the only thing she could think of was to grab ahold of the Kriegsman next to her and yank him out of the way behind some rubble. It gave them a moment to reload and reassess their options.
“Glad to see at least I am not alone in this,” she spoke boldly. “I know your reputation, Kriegsman, but do try to stay alive.”
The man looked at her and took a deep breath reloading his gun. “As you command, sister,” he responded almost regrettably with a curt nod. “I will fight with you ‘til my last breath.”
Once the break in the enemy’s fire had come, the Kriegsman and Sister rushed from behind the rubble and unloaded upon them once more. They could not make any advances and they could not really retreat. An attempt was made to contact the ship or anyone for that matter, but there was never a response. It was an assumption that the coms ceased to work or there was too much interference.
The Kriegsman noticed a body with grenades still present just a few feet away and decided to make a break for it. The sister covered him as he did but ducked covering her head from another explosion. Managing to grab them, he rushed forward pulling the pins and tossing the whole belt as hard as he could. They flew through the air until they landed at the feet of the army exploding on impact and taking a massive chunk out of their line. Then it made its presence known. The huge suit of unholy power armor covered in blood moved through the army, a giant chainaxe in one hand, heretical combi-bolter in the other. For two people, it seemed a bit excessive for a Chaos Lord to present himself, but it was just their luck it seemed. They could not defeat that. There was no way to defeat that. Their fate might as well have been sealed but that did not mean they would stop trying. Cowardice did not know a place within the imperium of man. If it did, it was killed swiftly.
“KRIEGSMAN! GET BACK HERE NOW!”
There was no response, only a frozen man unable to move. At first, she thought he might have been frozen with fear and truthfully, she did not blame him. It was a logical and human response. Though Kriegsmen were known to be fearless, maybe this was a moment of truth to see just how fearless they really were when no one else was around.
The giant took many large steps toward the pair, closing the gap rather quickly until he was within arm's reach. He raised his blade ready to slice the man who swore to fight with her but then, nothing. The Kriegsman raised his fist and extended his fingers as if flicking water off his glove. A hole had blown straight through the Chaos Lord's armor and body so effortlessly that gore was strewn about the battlefield in an instant. The moment this gargantuan being fell over, the rest of the army turned tail and ran as fast as they could in utter fear as their champion fell. The Chaos Lord’s body exploded with empyrical energy, the explosion blowing the Kriegsman several feet away and into some metal rubble. The sister had no idea just what she had witnessed but it was certainly the work of the divine and maybe her prayers had been answered. He had fought until his last breath just as he had said and she was the last one standing, or so she thought. Out of reflex, she ran to him sliding across the mud and muck as he lay limp against the metal supporting him. His leg had been blown clean off at his knee, his mask had taken extreme damage resulting in the left side of his face terribly injured, and he was lucky he had a chest plate to protect his most vital organs. Those were the only obvious and noticeable injuries.
Leaning in, she felt for his pulse and was surprised he still had one after all that but his breathing was very shallow. The sister grabbed him, pulling him up into her arms to carry him to a much safer location to treat him. She could have left him to die, but if he was meant to die he would have been killed outright by that monster. Something was special about him and she was not going to let that be snuffed out so hastily.
After getting him to safety, she leaned him against the shelter’s wall and checked his pulse and breathing once more. He was still hanging on. She looked him over before taking some of the cloth from her garb to wrap tightly around his bleeding leg to slow the flow of blood.
“S- I- Lyr-” static came over her coms. “Sist– Come i-”
The sister opened her coms and began talking, whether they could hear her or not. “I’m here. This is Sister Lyra.”
There was still static but obviously, someone was trying to come through until the signal cleared. “Sister Lyra, this is Moz do you read?”
“Yes, Moz! Thank the emperor. I’m here. A guardsman and I are in dire need of your retrieval.”
“Understood. Send me your coordinates so that I may find you.”
Lyra leaned back for a moment and sent a signal to the pilot, Moz. “I sent them. Please, be quick about it. I need medical, immediately.”
She turned her attention back to the man in front of her and he was still unmoving. His chest rose and fell ever so slightly. Maybe if she just removed the mask, she could monitor him better. Lyra reached over and went to tug on his gas mask only for her wrist to be snatched in a panic. A single eye stared at her before realizing who she was and hesitantly let go of her wrist. Lyra pulled his mask off, tossing it aside for the moment. His face was nearly non-existent on the left as blood poured all over him as it was the only thing keeping his face intact. Taking yet another piece of cloth, she wrapped his head to stop the bleeding and keep what flesh on the left side together as she could. He hissed in discomfort but stayed still as she tended to him. He looked down at his leg noticing that it had been removed then felt the autogun wounds and bruises on his arms when he tried to move. He looked up at her curiously and she knew what he wanted to ask.
“How-” he started. “Sister, just leave me. I can be of no use to you. I'm sure I'll be disposed of once we're back on the ship…I didn't serve my purpose.”
“Pilot Moz is coming, you’ll be taken care of, and you’re going to live whether you like it or not. Do you understand?” she replied curtly.
Looking slightly taken aback by her tone, he agreed with a grumble. “Yes, ma’am.”
“You served your purpose. I don’t know what happened, exactly, but one second you were frozen solid and the next the beast was dead. I believe you were touched. That means you still have a fight left in you, and you're meant to live. So throw a fit, kick, and scream, whatever you like, you’re alive until further notice. What’s your number? Or.. name if you have one. Do Kriegsmen have names in the 83rd regiment?”
The man shifted and sighed. It certainly was not exactly what he wanted to hear but at least he did her a great service by keeping her safe with whatever he did. He could not remember.
“Reid Caldwell…Might I know yours, Sister?”
“Lyra Mickeal.”
The sound of a carrier hummed and shook the ground as it landed nearby. Two veterans left the ship to assist the pair returning to the ship as quickly as possible. As soon as they had returned to the ship, the Kriegsman was taken away for medical treatment following Lyra's orders and she was left writing the report noting every last detail of their mission and the disaster that had followed.

Is there something I missed for the new Kill Team edition ? There is actually no Adepta Sororita besides the Novitiates and no Orks besides the Kommando ? The main base of these factions are actually not supported outside of these two very specific kill teams ?

Welp, with the release of the September slate, GW did the thing they said they were gonna do and made the app locked behind WH+.
I don't know about y'all, but I, for one, am what the kids call "broke as shit", so instead of paying for another subscription I don't really need, I just decided to update the old points calculator I made a few months ago.
You can find it below:
This should be fully updated with the 9.7.23 dataslate, but let me know if you have any issues using it or any suggestions to improve it.
Cheers!

Who's up next for a refresh?
Now that the Nids got their ancient kits modernized, I decided to check on all the factions over at the Lexicanum that had no relevant releases over the last years.
Of course 99% of Space Marines disqualifies by default. Their minis might be the aesthetical equivalent of drywall, but that doesn't change the fact that they at least got something. Unlike, ya know, Grey Knights, who since 2011 have gotten TWO CHARACTERS and that's it. If anyone would be due for a makeover on the imperial side it would be them, but given how for over a decade GW has tried their best to pretend the faction does not exist I doubt they will get anything. So onwards to the other factions:
Adeptas Sororitas: Got re-released as a faction in 8th, and got a whole bunch of stuff in 9th. Not likely to get a refresh anywhere.
Adeptus Custodes: Also released in 8th with an miniscule model range. How these guys qualify as an army faction and not a variant of Agents is beyond me. Might get some stuff, but no refreshes.
Astra Militarum: Literally just got an update towards the end of 9th, but there's probably a lot of older stuff that need redoing. Likely to get a bone when their codex drops but nothing massive.
Heretic Astartes: Got a whole bunch in 8th and 9th, also not very likely to get a massive refresh.
Death Guard: Became a faction in their own right models-wise in 8th, and got some more in 9th. Too new to get some refreshes.
Thousand Sons: Released with Magnus in 7th, got a bit of stuff during 8th, and only a single token character in 9th. Nothing up there needed a refresh but rather new stuff really.
World Eaters: Released literally last year - we might get a new Kharn tho.
Chaos Demons: shares the range with AoS so no shortage of new releases on big characters and monsters, but a lot of their rank-and-file units are getting somewhat dated. Wouldn't be surprised if we got an upgrade to 2008's Bloodletters and Daemonettes.
Craftworld Eldar: Got a bit of a refesh in 9th, but I wouldn't be surprised if we also get some upgrades to their 6th edition stuff. Despite all memes not a very high priority from what I can see.
Dark Eldar: These guys are NOT having a good time. Most of their stuff is from 5th edition, and since then we have gotten a bunch of characters, two units, and a flyer - all over the course of 4 whole-ass editions. In dire need of a refresh.
Harlequins: lol. lmao even.
Genestealer Cults: fairly new, given how they only got a single character in 9th they will most likely get new stuff, but no refreshes
Leagues of Votann: Literally came out last year, same situation as World Eaters, currently waiting for their second wave.
Necrons: Got a refresh in 9th, most likely getting their 2012 and earlier characters redone this edition (Trayzin, Stormlord, Orrikan) when their codex comes out, although Camoptek-stuff and the Ghost Ark sure be showing their age.
Orks: gigantic model range. Despite solid releases every edition there's always stuff that needs to be updated.
T'au Empire: Got a bunch of stuff 8 years ago, and not much since then. 2 Killteam boxes and 3 named characters sounds like something, but when armies field models from 2001 that definetly does not help.
Overall in that list there's only three that stand out: Demons, Dark Eldar and T'au. If we look at the severety of outdated stuff, the DE should be totally up next, but my guess is that GW will tie their refresh to when the story focus jumps back to where Arks of Omen left off in the Webway. If that happens still this year, they get it first, otherwise T'au gets their Codex early 2024 which is the most likely time they will get anything.

PRESENT TENTH
Right. Let's try this again shall we?
Tumblr media
So, with 10th edition dropping at the end of June, I decided I wanted to get some games in early doors to get a handle on the new rules. With this in mind I reached out to the community to see if anyone fancied playing in the launch week, expecting a handful of us to get together somewhere.
Tumblr media
I ended up organising a weekend-long event at the start of July in Nottingham (at the fantastic LeadBelt Games Arena) for 18 people, including helping order the new index cards packs and Leviathan mission deck for those that wanted them. It turned out pretty good! I only got extremely stressed out! It was actually a really good weekend - lots of games played, a wide variety of beautiful armies on show, a good mix of different sized games plus some with the new Combat Patrol rules as well.
Tumblr media
I personally got in two 1000pt games against Genestealer Cults and Necrons (two defeats, including the Necrons winning by a single point with one of the new Gambits), a 2000pt game against the Aeldari (a narrow victory for me), and a Combat Patrol game against the Adepta Sororitas. It meant that I ticked all the boxes I had for the weekend - at least four games, all different opponents, at least one game of Combat Patrol, use every model I had painted across all of the games, and try out the Space Wolves and Gladius detachment rules.
Tumblr media
And the verdict was: 10th edition is good! So good that, when it came to the last round of the local Crusade league that was still ongoing at the time, we were asked if we wanted to continue playing with the 9th edition rules or drop. So, I dropped. The thought of going from simplified datasheets, army and detachment rules and stratagems on a handful of index cards back to juggling rules and 61(!) stratagems from four different books… nah, ta. I mean, it was still a difficult decision to make - I missed the last round of games from my first Crusade league due to a positive Covid test, and now I was missing the end of this one as well - but it just seemed like too much of a faff.
Tumblr media
Hobby-wise I fully stepped into my idea of building and priming while it is nice weather, and painting and building during the winter months - over 2000 points of marines either primed or part-painted, including two big(ish) vehicles with the Repulsor and Impulsor in there, ready for painting when the nights draw in.
Tumblr media
One of these primed models I managed to get finished in time for my second game of the new Crusade league, my new Lieutenant with Combi-weapon (I used my Secret Santa gift as a proxy in the first game).
Tumblr media
I'm going to post up the after-match stories I wrote up for the previous league - I incorporated the fact I ended it early through the idea of my army being pulled out to fight the incoming Leviathan hive fleet invasion. And with the new league turning out to be set during said invasion, I'm using this as a chance to continue their story. And this one I intend to see it through to the end!

Factions in 40K
(long post)
Imperium
The Imperium is the only really interesting faction in 40k. This is because they are the most fleshed out, and they are the most fleshed out because they are the default / creator's pet.
Imperial Guard
Interesting. Well done. Might have balance recommendations. The problem is that the setting allows one basic ruleset for them. They had to completely revamp the Dwarves to make them good in model / battle.
I'm not going to cover Tempestus Scions, as they are basically upgraded Imperial Guard. They are interesting in concept, but most of their equipment is just slightly better weapons than the Imperial Guard has.
Lost and the Damned
In the lore, they are one of the most common enemies for the Imperium to fight, as it includes basically any pirate, rebel, discontent, mutant, and abandoned faction. They are already an incredibly interesting idea, and fantastic playground for throwing Chaos into. Hell, Rogue Trader had Lower Deck Rabble be a common enemy early on, and it was great.
They haven't had rules since 3rd. The first time they had rules.
You can have mutant armies, mad max armies, organized chaos cults, etc.
Planetary Defence Force
By the lore, the most common army in the Imperium. They vary in quality from Soviet conscript given a few minutes of training and no rifle to Imperium Guard level, to even beyond.
Have there ever been rules?
No.
The big problem here is that GW decided that Space Marines are the default, not the Imperial Guard. As such, Imperial Guard are barely useable, while PDF are cannon fodder. This also produces the effect that your super-cool generically engineered and powered armour are now run of the mill. In 9th, (pre-Ark of Omens), Space Marines are 18 points. This means you could have an army of 1 point units, and still have fun with it. Like, the one time they kind of wrote rules for the Tyrant's Legion, they had the Imperial Guard work as Human shields for your Astartes units. This doesn't make any sense for the Tyrant of Badab, but would make sense for PDF and perfect for Lost and the Damned.
Adeptus Arbites
Basically, Judge Dredd. An interesting idea, but they don't really do anything in lore, as they only focus on Imperial-level issues. As long as you worship the Emperor in some vaguely acceptable fashion and pay your tithe, they have nothing to do. No Streets to be Judging. It basically takes a planet-wide riot / insurrection for them to actually do anything.
They were also never released as a faction. Just a few models you can add to your existing army.
Adepta Sororitas / Sisters of Battle
Note: Unlike the rest of the Imperial armies, the fake Latin is not an overland with the common name. The Sisters of Battle are the Orders Militant of the Adepta Sororitas... except when they are not.
Anyways, this is a really great IDEA for an army. I say idea, as GW will often go entire editions without a Codex for them. And this is one of the biggest problems with GW, as they produce new editions so often that they have to constantly produce new rules, and we get a lot of interesting factions without rules.
They also mostly play as discount Space Marines.
The Ark of Omens dataslate, (rules patch), completely fucked them over, and was the last time I ever cared about 40k's canon rules.
For the record, I decided to write my own rules,
Tumblr media
Adeptus Astartes / Space Marines
I've always hated calling them space marines.
Anyways, the single most fleshed out faction, at least the Ultramarines. Most of the non-Codex chapters simply change the size of units, and maybe a couple of swap-out rules, which make them easy to produce a new codex for whenever GW creates a new edition.
Do I have negative things to say about Space Marines?
There are several books I could write about it. That's because it has so many books written about it that I have material to complain about in lore, and arguing about lore is half of the fun.
That, until Primaris Marines ruined everything.
Adeptus Custodes
Super space marines. Space marines are already super, but GW loves adding ultra-super-too-rare-to-use elements to their games.
In truth, until the recent retcon, they were an entirely solid faction. If you combine them with the Sisters of Silence. They have technology that is a step beyond what the Space Marines use, and it works incredibly well in the setting.
Grey Knights
Another super-space marine faction. An entire faction of Psykers, but made entirely out of edgelordery. They kill anyone that witnesses them, even though they are space marines in bigger powered armour, making them extremely conspicuous. It also means they cannot fight along side any other faction. They also used to murder space nuns to sanctify their weapons, because edgelodery.
If they wanted to make them edgelord, but still interesting, they could have given them a rule where they will treat any other faction's unit as hostile, even Imperial, and justify as an overabundance of caution, because calling in the Grey Knights is a last resort to stop a planet from being turned into a Daemon World, and everyone is probably being mind-raped by daemons, anyways.
Instead, they don't want anyone to know they exists.
For the record, if a daemon is in real space, and you kill it, it's just reborn in the Warp, sometimes instantly. You have to kill it in the work to put it into a century-long timeout. So, killing a daemon in real space means that everything they learned is instantly passed onto the rest of the chaos forces.
Adeptus Mechanics / Skitarii
This is the time that GW finally does something different, rather than every other factions being on the scale of IG-SM. Their mentality is wholly alien, their equipment unique. This is what every faction should feel like.
Eldar / Space Elves
The faction with the most lore after the Imperium, and honestly, probably the most lore after the Space Marines. Because Space Elves are cool.
Now, Eldar is Sindarin for Children of the Stars, which is a fantastic name for them. Unfortunately, since it's stolen, they can't copyright it. So, they changed it to Aeldari, because THAT IS SO MUCH MORE CREATIVE.
Just use the borrowed name.
Craftworld Eldar
The best done of the Eldar factions, but that is a mixed bag. They have incredibly deep lore, interesting morality, and complex societies.
On the tabletop... they use lasguns and chainswords, like the Imperium. Now, the chainsword works well for the Imperium, as it's Brutalist and industrial. Space Elves have Wraithbone, which is a magic material that is literally sung into existence, and their - hand crafted - worlds - . Until the retcon.
And they use chainswords. And slightly better lasguns.
The worst part is that they literally have rules for a bow they could have used.
I mean, give the entire army a trait, let's call it Ranger, that lets them Flank AND allows them to come in as reinforcements WITHOUT having the game treat them as having moved.
Give them Wraithbone longbows that create magic arrows. ESPECIALLY as they are very clearly Celts. Give them Wraithbone swords that have the same statistics as Power Swords, (-4 AP).
Dark Eldar
On one hand, you get the justification for hand-crafted monsters.
On the other hand, you don't get that many, and the lore...
The Dark City is literally powered by torture, with torture also being used instead of food. They have spikey armour. Sorry, spikey "armour".
Tumblr media
Now, I'm not complaining about the bikini, as it's a lot more realist than spikes. Hell, if you have spikes, you need real armour, or else the one most likely to get stabbed is yourself.
If you want to create emo elves then have Dark Worlds that orbit Dark Stars that are connected by the forbidden Abyssal Pathways. Instead they give them spikey armour and poison.
Because only an evil faction would use poison. The Imperium is more pure and noble, and uses Flamethrowers.
They already have a faction that uses spikes, Chaos Marines, and the spikes are often involuntary and a sign of Chaos corruption.
Give them a magic breeding programme that lets them breed mix-and-match critters. Have them use slave obedience collars, that use pain to get compliance.
Instead they use bomb collars, and sometimes blow them up for the fun of it. Like, if they had a Lost and the Damned codex, they could just use Lost and the Damned rules, and give them Human shields. The models would be the same, just with collars around their necks.
Exodite Eldar
Tumblr media
So, brief lore.
The Space Elves had enough blood orgies to summon futa-satan.
The mainline Eldar became the Dark Eldar.
The Craftworld Eldar were the uptight ones that felt that enough blood orgies to create a new Chaos god was a bad idea, and so fled to their craftworlds.
The Exodites went to wild worlds, and kind of devolved as a civilization. Now, they could have easily had them be like the Nox in Stargate, that abandoned the outer trappings of technology without abandoning it. Instead they use magic rocks to mimic the infinity circuits that prevent Craftworld Eldar souls from being consumed by the aforementioned futa-satan.
There is little lore, barely any acknowledgement in canon, and never had models or rules.
Models of what?
THEY RIDE FIRE BREATHING DINOSAURS WITH GIANT LASER CANnONS!
GW naturally assumed that their audience would somehow find that boring. They never released actual faction rules. 2nd edition had some models.
Tumblr media
Yes, players would find that SO BORING, wouldn't they?!
Ynnari
Actually a really interesting idea. Actually adding something new and dynamic to the setting, especially for the infamously ancient and plotting/plodding Eldar. Guilliman's Elf Waifu helped to create the new god Ynnead, and Eldar from all factions rushed to join the new one.
So, on the tabletop, they are a mix-and-match faction. This makes sense, but it's also just the existing factions, mix-and-matched.
Which I guess is similar to how Death Watch works.
Tau
The Tau was an obvious excuse to add their own Gundams. Just like how Titans and Knights are obviously Mechs from BattleTech. And the Great Crusade is from Dune. And the Arbiters are Judge Dredd.
Are they good Gundams? No.
Are they bad Gundams? No.
The faction itself are space communists that are probably being controlled by the Space Elves. This is a simple way to build up the faction, it's divided into Indian elements, Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Aether, each given a history. In truth, I really don't have any complaints against their history.
In the lore, they were planet that the Imperium wanted to conquer, but got distracted for a thousand years. When they met them again, they are a technologically advancing space-faring civilization.
In the lore, they are incredibly interesting in the setting, like dropping a viewpoint character into a fantasy RPG. They have a minimal warp presence, and barely skip through the warp when traveling FTL. This means they don't have any history of daemons. So, all of the daemons and space magic and living saints of the setting is completely foreign to them.
Unfortunately, as a newcomer faction, they are not allowed to actually do anything. They can barely travel being planets, and haven't had a chance to spread anywhere, yet. This means that when something interesting happens, they can't really get involved.
The space communism is also pretty boring for storytelling, so they created a renegade faction to add named characters to. The renegade faction is far more interesting than the original, which again, I have no problem with.
In all honesty, I just find their not!gundams to be ehn.
Orks
Of all of the factions in 40k, Orks are the most to faction.
The Orks are fantasy Orcs moved to space, but they were turned into space football hooligans. Orks have a gestalt psychic field that they cannot directly control, (which, is honestly a lot safer than sorcery). They are photosynthetic mushrooms that spread spores. Not for themselves, but they Orikiform worlds, create entire Ork ecology for them to survive in.
Orks are unique in that they completely change the tone of the setting.
Most of the setting are space knights, and those that help or hinder them.
Orks are a faction of Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck. They work on cartoon logic, and their psychic field allows the universe to work on cartoon logic when they are around.
They are a great enemy, but honestly, the best POV setting other than the Imperium
Tyranids
And interesting premise that is completely failed. I honestly think the Zerg, (up to Brood War), to be this faction done well.
What are the Tyranids? Hungry. They devour the entire biosphere of living planets!
Except they don't. Canonically, they come to a living planet. Kill it's biosphere. Create their OWN biosphere. They then liquify and drink that biosphere. Into orbit. Which would take more energy than they would get from the planet. And they could theoretically do for a number of planets without life.
And it's just like, WHY? Most of their faction are born moments before they see combat. Meaning... they don't have to be fed. Okay, yeah, have them born hungry and give them rules for actually eating defeated enemies.
But, this being GW, they didn't. They then created the Synapse, which is a psychic link some units have to control the other units. Without this, they would act like slavering beasts. They also didn't write these rules. Ironically, Space Wolves actually have the "Headstrong" rule, which is similar to how it could act. Make that the unique element of the faction, that their units are overpowered/underpointed, but they have limitations on how to actual use them, as they are mostly stupid beasts.
They also have them carry rifles. The rules say bio-rifles that launch tiny bugs that burrow into your heart, but in practice, they are just carrying rifles. I mean, you are creating living weapons. Have them launch spikes like supercharged hedgehogs. Have them spit acid, have a tail that launches poison darts at a short range.
How do they move through the Warp? Plot.
What do they want? Unknowable, (aka: plot).
How do you beat them?
Now, 40k doesn't want to end ANY of their factions, as that ruins the fun, but in theory, every faction other than Chaos can be killed, if you try hard enough. Considering the Imperium has several exterminatus bombs; they literally can kill everything.
Chaos can be killed by the Alpha-Pariah, but that's THEORETICAL. The logistics of actually doing so are mind boggling. There was also a time before the gods of Chaos, and the Necrons have killed gods before. And the Elves have their own gods. Kind of.
Tyranids? They work entirely on plot. In a setting like 40k, that cares deeply about military strategy and logistics, this is boring. An unkillable enemy is boring.
And funny enough, Warcraft III actually added some unkillable enemies that are not boring.
Necrons
Now, the name for the space robot skeleton army is entirely accidental, as their real name is Necrontyr. So, Necro is just a short version of it. Brilliant!
Except they could have just made it the Imperial nickname for them.
Anyways. In lore they are incredibly interesting. They fought a war in heaven, worshipped, (and killed), literal gods more powerful than the existing Chaos gods. They learned how to transfer themselves into machine bodies, which just accidentally look like skeletons to us.
Every time they die, they can transfer their consciousness to a new body, but there is always a little loss. After aeons of deaths, their lower ranks lose the ability to honestly think.
Yes, like Hollowing in Dark Souls, which Dark Souls might have stolen from them.
Anyways, in theory the lower ranks are nearly mindless, barely able to use their weapons, while the upper ranks still maintain their minds.
Are their rules for this? No.
They did add resurrection rules. They work, but they could have been a lot more interesting. Like, have an Ark that builds new models for their minds to move into, which then gives the enemy a single target they can focus on. Like most of the factions in 40k, they feel too samey to every other factions, with only minor differences in function. They also forcibly make the Necrons use morale roles, when they could have had the base, (mindless), units immune to morale. Because beep-bop-boop. They also modelled them after Egypt, when the Thousand Sons are also Egypt. They could have gone with Mesopotamia, which would actually fit better with the skeleton designs.
