Perseverance: Slow and Steady Wins the Race
We all have an inner need for perseverance and the will to find courage. Dr. Tom psychoanalyzes Aesop's tale, The Hare and Tortoise, in this article. #psychology #aesop #depthpsychology #asacredjourney #journey #sacred
Perseverance and the Need for Inner Courage I have always loved the story of The Hare and Tortoise. It is one of my favorite of Aesop’s fables. But what lessons does it teach, other than the age-old idiom slow and steady wins the race? When I read this story, I cannot help but think of two primary virtues: Perseverance and the will to engage our inner courage. Psyche, the element of the soul…

Of Paul Terry and Terrytoons
We already talked a bit about Paul Terry (1887-1971) with respect to his studio’s creations Mighty Mouse and The Mighty Heroes; this brief post will fill out the rest of the portrait. Terry had been a newspaper comic strip artist for about a decade when he was inspired by Winsor McCay’s Gertie the Dinosaur in 1914, inspired him to take up animation. He started with a couple of shorts that were…

Grasshopper revision | David Berman
If the fable of “The grasshopper and the ants” was amended so that the world ended before the turn of winter, then the grasshopper would have been wiser and the moral would have vindicated him. In a story, the location of the ending is very deliberate. From David Berman’s December 1994 essay/poem/riff “Clip-On Tie,” which could be read as a Christmas story, if you like.

But Who Plays The Wolf?
The Boy Who Cried Wolf  … from Aesop’s Fables There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, “Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!” The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy…

Aesop's Fables - Amazing Tools for Business
Aesop’s Fables – Amazing Tools for Business
Aesop’s fables are more than just stories for school children, they are tools to teach important business lessons. Take a new look at these classic stories and see how they can benefit your business. You may be surprised that you and your children get two different lessons from the same fable.   Most people read on or more of Aesop’s fables during their childhood without realizing they are…

The Ant and the Grasshopper
Early Spring Seated on a stair beneath a dimly lit sconce, Andy Ant drew the book closer, securing it between his legs with tarsal claws pressed against his compound eyes. The faintly illuminated words became readable in the spill of light. “Hey ant-boy!” “Gaaaahhh!!!” Andy Ant nearly leaped out of his exoskeleton; his antennae stiffened, and the book thudded onto the floor. “Damn, Oly,…

Frog and Scorpion Retold
Frog and Scorpion Retold
The basic nature of man never changes as the famous poet Waris Shah said it hundreds years ago. He said “Waris Shah na adtaan jandiyan ne, bhaven katiye porian porian ji” meaning come what may, the habits never die. Same lesson is sought to be conveyed by the fable “Frog and Scorpion” which is commonly attributed to Aesop though the authenticity of this claim is contested by some authorities. Any…

The Ants and the Grasshopper The Aesop for Children http://read.gov/aesop/052.html
Sometimes it is hard to create horror in a world so horrific. I sometimes break from it out of sensitivity for the situation, incredulity over politics, and personal burnout. When I am not anxious, I sometimes feel flat. Can anyone relate?
The personal horror for me is realizing lessons I never learned…

Man and Serpent by Aesop
Man and Serpent by Aesop
Today for Myths, Legends, Folklore and Tall Tales, we’re reading Man and Serpent by Aesop. Myths, Legends, Folklore and Tall Tales is another one of my podcasts featuring bedtime story readings — in this case the myths, legends, folklore and tall tales of the world. Now and again, I read one of my own stories or even the chapters of a serialized novel.

Horror Movie Review: The Devil's Carnival (2012)
The Devil’s Carnival is a lot of fun. The story is weighted down by tales of murder, suicide and greed but dressed up in flashy and stage-like visuals.
We love a musical horror, the likes of Stage Fright and Repo! A Genetic Opera have given us much joy. So The Devil’s Carnival is on to a winner straight away, being a musical horror movie. That it was also directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, stars the likes Sean Patrick Flanery, Briana Evigan, Jessica Lowndes, Paul Sorvino, Emilie Autumn and draws from Aesop’s Fables is the icing on the cake. It…

Triple Down Bummers Now Come in Grape Flavor
Triple Down Bummers Now Come in Grape Flavor
You heard me right.  Grape flavor.  Specifically sour grape flavor.
I put my family on an airplane today to go be with my oldest son while he has surgery.
I get to stay home with the family dog because my back is hurting so fiercely from weather and arthritis that I can’t possibly spend hours on a plane.
So, sour grapes.
You know the Aesop’s Fable about the fox and the grapes?
The fox, seeing…

Two Milestones
Two milestones, which I admit are poles apart — Shakespeare’s Sonnets (all 154) and Aesop’s Fables.

In Aesop’s Fables, one of the stories that everybody relates to is the one about the boy who cried wolf. It’s No. 210 in the Perry Index of Greek and Latin fables: the morality tale of a young boy who shouts “wolf, wolf” while grazing his sheep.
Villagers who are near by rush to his defence, but they find him hale and…
