Against Workplace Discrimination
Today, I want to share something important with you. A very good friend of mine, who is autistic, has found a unique method to express himself. And I think it deserves a little more attention.
He works in retail, surrounded by a colorful variety of goods. However, one shelf always particularly catches his attention - the alcohol shelf. Like a modern artist eternalizing their emotions on a canvas, my friend takes a baseball bat in hand and lets his feelings, which are often hard to put into words, loose on the bottles.
Yes, his boss is anything but pleased. "This is not appropriate behavior at work," he says. But is it really inappropriate or just unusual?
My friend is autistic. For him, the world is often a flood of impressions and the alcohol shelf - his baseball bat - is his unique way of relieving himself and communicating his feelings. It is a form of expression that may be hard to understand for outsiders, but that doesn't mean it has less value.
Discrimination in the workplace is a serious issue that still receives too little attention. It often affects those who are different, who think differently, who feel differently. But we should not condemn what we do not understand. We should strive to learn more about it, to show more understanding, and to create an environment where everyone can find and use their individual voice.
With this, I would like to initiate a discussion: How can we counteract discrimination in the workplace, especially when it comes to people with autism? How can we create a more inclusive, understanding environment where everyone is heard and understood in their own way? I look forward to your thoughts and experiences!
Until the next post, dear folks. Let's spread more understanding and acceptance in this world. 💖
