Can Hamsters Fly - shipping small animals. Domestic shipments (ie. in Canada) are straightforward. I ship using Air Canada Cargo. Domestic Shipments Require: - Full name and address that matches your photo-ID for pickup - $200 Crate Rental Fee (75% returned upon the safe return of the crate at your cost) - $160 Cargo Flight *includes supplies - $20 Cost of Hamster - $30-70 for time/labour costs on my part - most shipments take about 2-4hrs start to finish in terms of calling/paperwork/drop-off/etc. Total: $420-470 (-$150 = $270ish) International Shipments (ie. The USA) are a much greater time and money investment. With COVID it is currently not possible. Since its founding in 1989 as an affiliate of shipping conglomerate Evergreen Group, EVA Air has expanded to include air cargo, airline catering, ground handling, and aviation engineering services. Its cargo arm, EVA Air Cargo, links with the Evergreen worldwide shipping network on sea and land. Its domestic and regional subsidiary, UNI Air, operates a medium and short-haul network to destinations in Taiwan, Macau and China with its main hub in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. As of January 2018, EVA Air is the 15th safest airline in the world, with no hull losses, accidents, or fatalities since its establishment.

EVA Air operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, with Airbus A330, Airbus A321, Boeing 777, Boeing 787, and ATR 72 (operated by UNI Air) airliners primarily used on passenger routes, along with Boeing 777 freighter aircraft used on cargo routes. The airline was one of the first carriers to introduce the Premium Economy class (previously called Elite Class by EVA Air), which it debuted in 1991.

Can you ship chinchillas through the mail? You can, although it's cruel to leave an animal in a stressful situation, unattended, for long periods of time. USPS, UPS and Fedex don't carry live chinchillas so they have to be flown as cargo on planes in special crates (not envelopes or parcels!). Many countries prohibit the import of animals or have hefty import fees instead.

Can You Ship a Chinchilla?

If you live somewhere where chinchillas are uncommon pets, your only option may be to import one. So long as it's legal to import chinchillas to your country, it's possible to do so. This also means that it's possible for you to legally breed, package and ship chinchillas from countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. You can also ship a chinchilla cross country.

So, you can send a chinchilla to someone else by mail. But that doesn't mean putting the animal in an envelope, sealing it, and sending it off. Instead, the chinchilla has to be shipped in the right conditions to ensure that it survives transit. Let's find out how that's done.

Can You Send a Chinchilla in the Mail?

Shipping chinchillas is done with pet crates. These are like large kennels that the animal is kept in. To be shipped either nationally or internationally, the crate has to meet the specifications of the shipping company. These regulations typically relate to:

The ventilation available to the animal inside

The use of bedding and the provision of food

If the crate doesn't meet these specifications, it won't be shipped. Shipping companies have brands that they recommend to that a shipper knows that the crate will be accepted before shipping it.

As you may have guessed, the above means that you cannot ship chinchillas by regular mail. USPS, UPS and Fedex will not carry chinchillas. It's viewed as too much of a risk, as if the chinchilla dies, then the company would be blamed by the customer and may have to foot a bill.

Instead, chinchillas are sent as cargo on airplanes.

Do Chinchillas Die in Transit when Shipped?

If every care is taken when shipping a chinchilla, it should get to its destination safely. Pets sent as cargo on planes are kept in controlled conditions where they don't get too hot, or too cold. However, there are still things that can go wrong during shipping:

Your chinchilla can become stressed by being kept near other animals

Your chinchilla's crate may be handled roughly, either accidentally or though poor service

The chinchilla could have underlying health conditions that mean it won't handle the unusual circumstances

Your chinchilla could run out of food and water

Many breeders operate a policy whereby you don't pay if your chinchilla doesn't make it through transit. It's worth talking to the individual breeder or owner about their honest experiences before making any purchase.

Can You Ship a Chinchilla Internationally?

It is possible to ship chinchillas internationally. But your country may have laws against importing animals, or prohibitive fees on importing them. The U.S. also has several rules and regulations that must be adhered to when exporting, and this becomes your problem if you're importing from there.

One group that does ship chinchillas internationally is Chinchillas.com. They are based in Ohio, but can ship to countries around the world. They charge a $1600 fee (as of 16/03/2020) per shipment of 1-8 chinchillas. This is a prohibitive price, but it's not solely so they can make a profit. The fee goes towards:

As you can see, there are lots of fees and lots of paperwork involved. This means it's only infrequently worth going through all the hassle. It typically only makes sense if you don't have any breeders whatsoever in your country.

Shipping Internationally during Summer

One thing to note is that breeders don't typically ship chinchillas over the summer months. That's because the conditions during transit and shipping wouldn't be favorable for chinchillas.

Chinchillas are from high up in the mountains, and prefer cold weather. That's why they have thick coats of fur. If you've ever owned a chinchilla, you'll know they aren't supposed to sit in direct sunlight or overexert themselves as they can overheat. This same issue applies to shipping.

Shipping a chinchilla during colder months is much safer. A chinchilla can survive temperatures of below freezing, so even in the unlikely event that the animal is left somewhere it shouldn't be for a long time, it should be safe. But even ten minutes of hot conditions can be too much for a chinchilla.

As such, many breeders ship only in the fall/autumn and winter months. Chinchillas.com, for example, ship between the months of October through May. Other sellers specify that they will only ship when they can guarantee that the temperature will stay between 32 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which rules out warmer seasons and harsh winters.

Legal and Regulatory Issues

Some countries and some U.S. states have made it illegal to import or export pets. In the U.S., Hawaii is the best example: you can't import anything, even much more common pets than chinchillas. The only exception is for scientific research, and even then any animals being imported are under strict control.

Most countries and most U.S. states don't have rules that are anywhere near as strict as that. But things you might encounter include:

Mandatory vet visits

Lots of paperwork!

As such, you should check with the relevant authorities in your country to see whether it's legal to import chinchillas and what regulations may apply. Otherwise, your chinchilla may be confiscated when it gets to the country, or you may be faced with a large unexpected fee.

To find out whether you can legally import chinchillas to your country, talk to the Department of Agriculture or equivalent body. You can likely find information online, but it's better to be certain by doing the research yourself.

Cost of Shipping a Chinchilla

The cost of shipping a chinchilla is high. That's because of the crates you have to use to ship them. These crates are big and bulky, and add significantly to the weight of the overall shipment. So, whether your shipping company calculates cost using weight, size, or a combination of both, it's going to cost you.

The exact price depends on the carrier you're using. But it will likely cost you more than $1000.

Cost of Shipping Chinchillas Internationally

The cost of shipping internationally is more than shipping nationally. That's because there's so much more time and effort involved in doing so, and because chinchillas are exotic animals that take a long time to breed.

ChinchillaAngora.com, for example, have a $5000 minimum fee for shipping chinchillas out of Canada (where they're based). These costs must be paid in full before shipping.

This is one of the core reasons why you should consider buying or rescuing locally. The only instances that this might be worth it is if your country has no breeders, or if you need exceptional breeding stock for your own ranch.

Is Shipping Chinchillas Cruel?

This is a difficult question to answer because shipping chinchillas in the mail is a point of controversy among owners and breeders. But at the same time, some countries don't have breeders, or only have very few, meaning that there's no other way to have a chinchilla but to import one.

Shipping is at least not the optimal way to transport a chinchilla from A to B. Ideally, you would go and pick up the chinchilla yourself, and transport it in a carrier. That way, you could check on it, tend to it and feed it. Even then it would be stressed by the journey, but this is far better than leaving the chinchilla unattended for long periods of time as it's shipped. It's an animal, not a thing, after all.

We would recommend exhausting every possible avenue before shipping a chinchilla nationally or internationally. That means:

Check that there are no reputable breeders local to you

Check that there are no rescues local to you

Check that there are no random people advertising chinchillas for sale near you (it's best not to encourage backyard breeding, but it's also bad to ship animals long distance, so this is a big decision to make)

Check if either the shipper or the recipient can pick up the chinchilla in person

Check if there isn't at least a breeder in the same country you can ship from, rather than internationally (this will save on paperwork, too)

However, we also recognize that people are going to do what they're going to do regardless of what others think, or that sometimes you have no choice. If either of those points apply to you, take as much care and precaution before you ship a chinchilla as possible.

Man furious with Air Canada after airline loses his cat during layover in Toronto

A Winnipeg man is furious with Air Canada after the airline lost his three-year-old cat during a layover in Toronto.

Riley McCann has been living in Montreal for the past five years but earlier this month decided to move back to his hometown of Winnipeg to be with his mother who is dealing with health issues. 

He originally booked a direct flight from Montreal to Winnipeg but ended up having his route switched by Air Canada, which included a layover in Toronto.

McCann travelled with one of his cats, Vida, in the cabin of the plane and paid $105 to have his other cat, Dewy, placed in the cargo area of the aircraft. 

Everything seemed to be going well until about one hour into his layover in Toronto when he got a call from an Air Canada employee saying they needed to "rely some information."

"They told me that my cat Dewy had escaped his carrier and is now missing in their baggage room," McCann told CTV News Toronto on Tuesday. "She told me that the employee that walked the crate off the plane set it down for a moment and when they turned around it was open and he was gone."

"They had no idea where he is."

McCann said he asked the employee if he could come search the baggage room himself but was told that wasn't allowed due to security reasons. 

"I begged and begged to be able to do that, so that I could call out for him but I was told that was not going to happen."

McCann said Air Canada offered to put him on a later flight to Winnipeg while staff searched for Dewy but he declined because he didn’t feel it was fair for his other cat to remain in its cage for an extended period of time.

He flew back to Winnipeg without Dewy. 

When he arrived, McCann tried to call Air Canada but he said no one from Toronto got back to him for more than 48 hours. 

He said he finally received a call on Jan. 18 from an Air Canada employee saying that they were searching for Dewy and hoping for the best. Over the next few days he received a few more notifications from the airline saying that they could not locate Dewy.

He said at one point last week, Air Canada even offered to fly him back to Toronto so he could search through the baggage room at night when it was quiet. 

"Initially, I was told this was impossible," McCann said. "Now, suddenly they're willing to fly me there. Normally, I would have got on a plane immediately but we’re in the middle of a global pandemic. I'm in self-isolation so to offer this seemed really reckless."

Air Canada has since offered to refund his flight and provide him with a $500 flight credit. While he accepted the offer, he also vowed to launch legal action.

McCann said he hasn’t been doing well since he lost Dewy and is struggling to cope with the loss.

"For the first week, I was so upset and so stressed that I wasn’t sleeping, I wasn't eating. It’s been very tough,” he said.

"I'm just sitting here stressed and sad but also scared for my animal’s wellbeing."

CTV News Toronto contacted Air Canada for comment, who said they have been in frequent communication with McCann. 

"We have been in frequent communication with the customer over this unfortunate situation and we continue to search for Dewy, including retaining outside specialists to assist," the airline said. "Air Canada safely transports thousands of pets each year and occurrences such as this are extremely rare."

The Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) told CTV News Toronto on Tuesday it is aware of Dewy's disappearance

"Airlines and their baggage handlers are responsible for all checked bags and cargo on their flights, which includes pets in transport," the GTAA said in a statement. "We are supporting the airline in their efforts to find Dewy and reunite him with his owner as quickly as possible."

Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Virtual Montreal Car Show

After redesigning the Tiguan and launching the Atlas, Volkswagen’s sales numbers have reached an unprecedented high. While the Atlas may be shattering the brand’s SUV sales figures, they’re not prepared to rest on their laurels. With other marques expanding their SUV/crossover line ups, clearly VW needed to expand their two model lineup to remain competitive, especially while the iron was hot. Enter the sleeker and smaller Atlas Cross Sport, offering customers a new and welcomed size alternative.  

But unless you have a really sharp eye, I doubt if you’ll notice that Volkswagen chopped off a couple of inches from the roof. They also took out three inches from the Atlas’ rear end, raked the back window, and got rid of the third row seat. The result is sportier looking midsize SUV that still delivers above average passenger room, with the largest rear seat in the segment, making this a true five passenger, and still enough room in the cargo bay for a weekend’s outing at the cottage.

Under the hood

The Cross Sport shares its powertrain options with its big brother, as the 235 horsepower, turbocharged 2.0 liter is the standard mill across all trim lines, while the 276 horse, 3.6 liter DOHC V6 delivering 266 lb-ft of torque remains as a $2,200 option. All Cross Sports sold in Canada are equipped with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Trims

You can get yourself into the base model, the Trendline for $38,995. Of course that’s with the turbocharged four but you also get autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alert. Stepping up to the $43,495 Comfortline will get you adaptive cruise, push button start with keyless entry, dual zone a/c, front and rear parking sensors, and vinyl seats. At $48,095 the Highline brings you the creature comforts us northerners want and need - heated seats (front and rear) and heated mirrors. A large panoramic sunroof makes meteor watching in winter really sweet. VW also threw in some ambient lighting. The top dog Execline will set you back $52,095 but you get a 12 speaker Fender audio system complete with a subwoofer, a 360 degree view camera, digital instrument cluster and a dynamic road sign display – just in case you forgot the speed limit where you are.

 The cabin

If you’re familiar with the Atlas, or read my blog, then the Cross Sport has few surprises. This is one big, airy, comfortable interior. My Aurora Red Chroma Execline came with the Cinnamon – Titanic Black seats which really complimented each other.  There’s no bad seat in the Cross Sport, the shot gunner’s seat is power operated while the 60/40 split rear bench reclines for some added comfort and features more legroom than a lot of luxury sedans and suvs. That alone dear readers is worth the price of admission if you value your rear seat occupants. Headroom is down slightly from the standard Atlas, but even with my six-foot frame, there was plenty of headroom to spare.

The customizable 12.3-inch screen replaces the traditional dash with an easy to navigate,  high-resolution display. A digital speedometer and tach flank the steering wheel and are part of the digital gauge cluster. The two-tone aluminum strip running down the dash wasn’t to my taste but a couple of friends did like it.

A buddy showed me the advantages of having two USB outlets; he ran two devices simultaneously, using his phone to run Waze while a USB key played our favorite road tunes. The Cross Sport also has a wireless charging pad.

There’s 40 cu.ft. of cargo room with the rear bench in place, fold it down and that expands to a more than ideal 77.8 cu.ft., besting anything in this highly competitive category. It may not be equipped with dozens of cubbyholes like its Japanese and Koreans counterparts but then, sometimes if you don’t have too many pockets, it’s easier to find things.  

On the road

Before the rise of the jellybean cars of the eighties and nineties, cars had flat hoods with clear unobstructed views of the road ahead and the front corners. Climb into the Cross Sport and peer out the windshield and you get the same vast expansive view of the road, even with the chopped roof. It’s a welcome feeling.

While I haven’t had any seat time in the turbocharged four powered version, I can’t see it as being anywhere nearly sufficient to haul this people carrier down the road. The fuel consumption savings alone would justify picking the two additional cylinders. If you plan on pulling anything with the Atlas Cross Sport opt for the V6 and the tow package. Sadly I didn’t feel any performance improvements over the Atlas despite the weight shedding. Like its big brother, off line gitty up and go is impressive for its size, but it would be nice to see the Cross Sport inherit the sporty driving dynamics hinted at by its fastback styling. Hopefully VW will address the issue and offer us a sporty edition with a tighter transmission and better-dampened suspension.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the Atlas Cross Sport a five-star overall crash-test rating.

 Conclusion

Volkswagen must have seen the writing on the wall, or have a good crystal ball, because they got the formula right. As a hot rodder, the Atlas has scored high in my increasing list of must-have VWs, right along with the Golf Rabbit edition GTI and Golf All-Track (modified to Golf R specs) plus a slew of vintage VWs, but that’s an article for another day.

If you don’t need to haul a platoon of kids, or a garage full of car parts or renovation items  around on a regular basis, but want the comfort and ride of a larger SUV with cool lines, then the Cross Sport might just be the vehicle you’ve been waiting for.

Is it perfect, no it’s not, no vehicle is, but here are my Atlas pet peeves.

For reasons beyond my understanding, as the flagship of the marquee, the Atlas’ rear view camera is NOT hidden behind the VW logo and hence prone to the same elements, just like every other car out there. I mean one of the winning features of modern day Volkswagens is the protected back up camera. Note to corporate if you don’t want a large VW logo on the back how about a round globe or Atkas the titan on a round circle to hide the camera behind.

I’d prefer a full size spare also, but at least it does have a spare with a full tool kit. Lastly why oh why have you not connected the tail pipes to the two square exhaust ports in the bumper?
