Lampranthus spectabilis
Lampranthus is a genus in the Aizoaceae, or Ice Plant Family, and it is hard to imagine anything that could flower more spectacularly. This species is widely grown in the nursery industry, though often labeled simply as "ice plant", rather than giving its proper name. It was much used by Ruth when she started planting her garden in the 1970's, since it provides such a jolt of spring color. Our plants re-seed, and they come up in a range of colors from white to pink to purple. L. spectabilis comes from South Africa's Eastern Cape Province.

Why on Earth isn’t the New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonoides) a more popular food plant?
This relative of succulent Iceflowers (Aizoaceae) is native to Australia, New Zealand, and Japan and was used by the Māori people in their traditional food. This plant has many attributes that could make it a perfect crop for environments where other crops fail. The New Zealand Spinach tolerates salty soil (a consequence of poor irrigation techniques), drought, heat, and most insect pests. In addition, the leaves are packed with healthy fibre and vitamins, and they have a long “shelf life” once harvested.
I can attest that the plant is delicious and versatile in all kinds of dishes where one would normally use spinach.

La dernière est en surexposition, à l’effet intéressant !

Drosanthemum micans
Drosanthemum is a genus of about 60 species in the Ice Plant Family (Aizoaceae), most of them found in the winter-rainfall area in western South Africa. They are often very enthusiastic flowerers, as can be seen here - the plant itself completely hidden by its flowers. The vivid red and yellow of the flowers makes for a very festive spring display. D. micans is native to the Robertson Karoo, a relatively dry region to the east of Cape Town.

#2471 - Disphyma australe - New Zealand Ice Plant
AKA Māori ice plant, Kermadec ice plant and Horokaka.
A short-lived endemic, found on cliff faces, gravel beaches, salt meadows and estuaries on most Aotearoan coastlines, and on the Kermadec Islands. It now also grows on a few Australian islands, including Tasmania, Norfolk Island and Lord Howe. Common around bird colonies, because it tolerates levels of nitrogen in the soil that many plants can't.
The flowers turn to follow the sun and are most open at noon.
Now a popular garden plant, but used as food and in medicine in the past. Māori utilized the juice of the leaves to treat boils, abscesses, or itch, and European settlers ate the bland-tasting, fleshy capsules and pickled the leaves.
Unfortunately vulnerable to the Australian Hibiscus Beetle Aethina concolor, and the introduced Pulvinaria mesembryanthemi, a scale insect specialised to host plants of the family.
The other three species in the genus are found in Australia and southern Africa.
Cape Egmont, Taranaki, New Zealand
