it's crazy to know that game misconduct’s out in the wild today. this book (and series) has been a labor of love over the last few years, although the actual publishing piece of it seems to have happened very fast. this is a story about loving hockey even when it doesn’t necessarily love you back. about the way that hockey culture makes and shapes you. about the way that violence can permeate everything in your life, even when you haven’t intended it to. about the damage that does, physically and psychologically. and most of all, about two broken men who just might hold the keys to fixing each other. thank you so much to everyone who made this day possible. i couldn’t have done it without you. (and as always...please read the content warnings.)
you can buy it on amazon, a few other retailers, or directly from carina.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Brings Back A Classic Deep Space Nine Villain
Tumblr media
Picard season 3 is honestly doing some amazing things on television with the lore of Star Trek and its long history. And the season is only 3 episodes in. Not only is this season acting as a true sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation, it’s bringing in elements of other Star Trek series and franchises from the past. Season 1 already brought back Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager as a regular cast member. But the Picard season 3 villains are an even more of a deep cut of previous Star Trek shows. Read on to find out how the Picard season 3 villains are very familiar. Please note that the following will contain major spoilers for Picard season 3, up until episode 3 titled, ‘Seventeen Seconds’. Picard Season 3 Combines Many Elements From Previous Star Trek Like mentioned before, with the return of classic Star Trek: The Next Generation characters in Picard season 3, it’s the only show so far in canon that feels like it's set in the whole universe, not just its own little corner. Other shows and movies felt limited to featuring just the cast of their respective show and movies. With the rare exception of some cross-overs and cameos.Except in the case of Chief Miles O’Brien (Colm Meaney) and Worf (Michael Dorn) who both successfully transitioned from regulars on Star Trek: The Next Generation, to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But Picard season 3, so far, has brought back Picard’s old Number One in William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Worf, and Deanna Troi (Marina Spirits) in flashbacks. There are also many connections to other TNG characters like Geordi LaForge’s daughter in Sydney LaForge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut). But with the most recent episode of Picard, we really go deep into Star Trek lore with the reveal of the Picard season 3 villains. A Major Reveal Of The Picard Season 3 Villains On the run from this mysterious new warship called The Shrike, the Titan soon realizes that they have a saboteur on board who is leaving a trail for them to follow. While concurrently, Worf and Raffi (Michelle Hurd) are investigating the devastation caused by a stolen portal weapon. A weapon, that The Shrike keeps using against Picard, Riker, Crusher and Picard’s newly discovered son, Jack, all aboard the Titan. After Jack (Ed Speleers) and Seven discover the trail and put an end to it, An Ensign (Chad Lindberg) ends up attacking Jack. After a scuffle, the Ensign’s face ripples and changes. Intercut with this story is that of Worf And Raffi’s interrogation of a suspect, who is seemingly in distress from what might be drug withdrawals. However, they soon realize that it’s not withdrawals, but rather the inability to maintain his solid shape. It’s a Changeling!! Who Are The Changelings? The Changelings are a race of beings introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine who were responsible for the massive Dominion war featured in that series. They were beings that were primarily in a liquid state, which they stay in while on their planet, as part of The Great Link. Their liquid property allows them to shapeshift into any object or person, of any race, making them one of the more formidable Star Trek villains. Their one weakness is that after a certain time, they struggle to maintain their solid shape, without regenerating in liquid form for some time. While initially, the Dominion War was between a warrior race known as the Jem’Hadar, with the Cardassians eventually joining later. Later on, we learned that the Changelings, or Founders as tthe Dominion knew them, were behind the whole thing Eventually, the war ended. However, as Worf explains to Raffi, a small faction of Changelings broke off, vying for the destruction of Federation. And it looks like the Changelings are the main Picard season 3 villains. But what exactly their plans are is still a mystery. And how the Captain of the Shrike chasing Titan, Vadic (Amanda Plummer) factors into it all, is still unknown. But the introduction of the Changelings as the villains is a huge reveal and definitely makes Picard feel a lot more Star Trek, than previous shows, Given how they’re incorporating parts of the universe not just limited to TNG, but the entire franchise at their fingertips. Star Trek: Picard season 3 episode 3 is now streaming on Paramount+. What did you think of the new, but old, Picard season 3 villains? What do you think it all means for the rest of the season?                                                    Amanda Forbes.
NICKNAME:
Amy, Mandy. BIRTHDAY:
10/10/1992 (26) ZODIAC:
Libra. OCCUPATION:
SPECIES:
Humana (por ahora). Cazadora.  SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Dean Winchester - ex-pareja FAMILY: Liz Forbes ;; Madre. Bill Forbes ;; Padre. Caroline Forbes :: Hermana gemela. Ella Lindberg :: Amanda es descendiente de Ella.
Sebastian John Winchester Forbes ;; Hijo.
Sam Winchester ;; Hermano.
FANDOM Crossover:
SPN/TVD/TO. SEXUALITY:
Bisexual. VOICE:
Candice Accola.

Pesä Ysien kasvatti Hertta Härkönen on tehnyt 2+1-vuotisen sopimuksen kasvattajaseuransa kanssa. Ykköspesikseen päättyneellä kaudella tipahtaneen lappeenrantalaisjoukkueen Härkönen on 16-vuotias, mutta hän ehti debytoida superpesiksessä jo loppukaudesta 2020.
- On helpompi katsoa tulevaisuuteen, kun joukkueessa on yksi oman ikäluokkansa lupaavimmista pelaajista, kommentoi joukkueen pelinjohtaja Ville Lantta.
Tumblr media
Pesäpalloilun Härkönen on aloittanut pesiskoulussa kolmevuotiaana. Pelaaja näkee suurimmat kehityskohteensa pesäpallossa fysiikan puolella, mutta muitakin ominaisuuksia hän haluaa kehittää kuten räjähtävyyttä lajisuorituksissa.
- Haluan tulla mahdollisimman monipuoliseksi pelaajaksi ja unelmana on voittaa Suomen mestaruus, Härkönen kertoo tavoitteikseen.

Muut seuran sopimuspelaajat tällä hetkellä ovat: Lotta Anttonen 2022, Nea Forsell 2022, Emmi Julkunen 2022 (2023), Eveliina Kainlauri 2022, Aino Kuittinen 2022, Kiia Laakkonen 2024, Heidi Lindberg 2023, Sara Moilanen 2023, Elina Muurman 2022, Maiju Peussa 2023, Essi Rytteri 2022, Tiia Saarela 2022, Amanda Timperi 2022 sekä Roosa Örså 2022 (2023). Suluissa on mahdollinen optioajankohta sopimukseen.
Joukkue on saavuttanut välitavoitteen tällä kaudella.
- Henkilökohtaisesti olen ollu tyytyväinen omaan suorittamiseeni peleissä, Härkönen päättää.

The suffering won't last forever.  It won't be long before this generous God
who has great plans for us in Christ - eternal and glorious plans they are!
– will have you put together and on your feet for good.
1st Peter 5:10 -   The Message Bible
Prelude
Invitation to Worship
Gather us in, O Lord, as your people; people who are grounded in faith and who understand resilience as a gift that is seen in Expecting; Knowing; Trusting; Resisting; Believing and Living.
Hymn – ELW #532  Gather Us In (vs. 4)
Not in the dark of buildings confining, not in some heaven, light years away—
Here in this place the new light is shining, now is the kingdom, and now is the day.
Gather us in and hold us forever, gather us in and make us your own;
Gather us in, all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone.
Centering Litany – God is in Us by Susan Palo Cherwein
Perhaps we do not remember it,... as loving arms held us
and water of new belonging splashed over us.
Each Ash Wednesday we see the sign again revealed.
We had forgotten it on ourselves;
we had neglected to see it on others,
But it persists.
That sign.
That cross.
A smudge of mortality.
A nudge of remembrance.
A remembrance of water poured.
A remembrance of anointing.
A remembrance of a way made straight for God.
You have been sealed… (point to your heart)
With the cross… (make the sign of the cross on your forehead)
Forever. Forever.
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed. AMEN.

The coming COVID-19 baby bust: Update
New Post has been published on http://khalilhumam.com/the-coming-covid-19-baby-bust-update/
The coming COVID-19 baby bust: Update
Tumblr media
By Melissa S. Kearney, Phillip B. Levine In June of 2020, three months after the COVID pandemic began in earnest in the United States, we wrote a report suggesting that the public health crisis and associated recession would result in 300,000 to 500,000 fewer births in 2021. Six months later, we have been asked several times if we have an updated estimate. We have revisited the issue and stand by our initial prediction of a large reduction in births. Based on our previous methodology and a labor market that improved somewhat more quickly than we anticipated, we place more emphasis on the lower range of our original estimate, likely closer to 300,000 fewer births. However, additional factors that we did not incorporate into our model – in particular, ongoing school and day care closures – might very well mean a larger reduction in births than that.
Corroborating evidence
It will still be several months before birth data will become available that will enable us to count the “missing” births. Additional survey evidence has come out, though, since we released our initial report that supports a coming baby bust. Corroborating evidence generated since our June report supports our prediction of a baby bust next year. A survey conducted by Laura D. Lindberg, Alicia VandeVusse, Jennifer Mueller and Marielle Kirstein of the Guttmacher Institute reveals that that 34 percent of American women have either delayed their plans to have a child or reduced the number of children they expect to have as a result of the pandemic. A different survey conducted by Francesca Luppi, Bruno Arpino, and Alessandro Rosina shows that European women similarly report that they plan to postpone giving birth or have fewer children. Levels of sexual activity have also fallen. In one survey (conducted by Justin Lehmiller, Justin Garcia, Amanda Gesselman, and Kristen Mark of the Kinsey Institute), almost half of adults surveyed report a decline in their sex lives. In another (conducted by Devel Hensel, Molly Rosenberg, Maya Luetke, Tsungchieh Fu, and Debby Herbenick at the University of Indiana), those with young children and, particularly, those with school-age children report the largest declines in intercourse. One way to gauge individual behavior is to examine what they search for in Google; these data are available through Google Trends. A study by Joshua Wilde, Wei Chen, and Sophie Lohmann based on these data supports our prediction of reduced fertility. The authors report that searches for pregnancy-related terms, such as “ClearBlue” (a pregnancy test), “ultrasound,” and “morning sickness” have fallen since the pandemic began. Based on the reduced searches for pregnancy-related terms, the authors of that study forecast a reduction of births on the order of 15 percent, an even larger drop than what we forecasted.
The pace of the economic recovery
In the six months that have elapsed since our original June report, labor market conditions have improved more rapidly than experts were predicting back in June. A key element of our forecast for declining births was based on our empirical analysis that found that a one percentage point increase in the unemployment rate is associated with a one percent drop in the birth rate. We applied that estimated relationship to the expectation of a seven to 10 percentage point increase in the unemployment rate, which was in line with Federal Reserve expectations. From today’s vantage point, it looks more likely that unemployment will have risen by around 5.5 percentage points in the year following the start of the pandemic (April 2020 through March 2021) from 3.5 percent to roughly nine percent. This estimate is based on observed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for April through November and assumes little change in the next few months. Using this revised expected change in unemployment, we would predict a 5.5 percent reduction in births from the unemployment effect alone. Applying that to the number of births in 2019 (3.75 million) suggests 206,000 fewer births in 2021. Our original forecast also incorporated an additional reduction in births coming from the anxiety and social conditions associated with the public health crisis. We incorporated this into our forecast by examining the experience of the 1918 Spanish Flu. Back then, every spike in the death rate attributable to the flu was associated with a dramatic reduction in births nine months later. We relied on that evidence to increase our forecast based solely on labor market conditions by one to three additional percent, or another 38,000 to 114,000 fewer births. The public health crisis has unfolded much as anticipated in the spring and similar in magnitude to the 1918 experience. That pandemic led to 408,000 deaths in the year after it began. Currently 290,000 deaths have occurred as of December 8 and 539,000 deaths are forecast to occur by April 1. The population of the United States is three times as large today as it was in 1918, but medical care has significantly improved, which should have reduced the death rate for a similar level of disease. We see no reason to alter our forecast based on these data. Combining the updated impact of the recession with our earlier additional impact of the public health crisis indicates that we should expect a baby bust in the range of about 245,000 to 320,000. Yet there are reasons to believe that our July prediction might understate the impact on fertility. Ongoing school closures are putting tremendous strain on families that may reduce their willingness to have more children. Restrictions on public gatherings and social encounters might mean fewer new couplings that could lead to pregnancies, intended or otherwise. The extended nature of this crisis also is likely to create large structural changes in the economy; a sizable share of the jobs lost will be permanent. The longer the duration of the income loss that workers expect, the more likely it is that delayed births will never happen. We did not attempt to make any predictions based on these additional factors because we had no previous context or data from which to draw empirical conclusions. It will still be several months before data will be available on the number of post-pandemic births that we can use to begin to assess our forecast. In the meantime, we have revisited our prediction based on the most recent evidence available. As of now, we stand by our prediction of a COVID baby bust of around 300,000 fewer births. But the longer the pandemic lasts, and the deeper the economic and social anxiety runs, it is feasible that we will see an even larger reduction in births with an increasing share of them averted permanently. Stockholm Jazz Stream:  STYRELSEN långfredag 10/4 kl 20:00
Tumblr media

Popular Protest: How effective is it?
Tumblr media
By James M. Dorsey
A podcast version of this story is available on Soundcloud, Itunes, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn, Spreaker, Pocket Casts, Tumblr, Podbean, Audecibel, Patreon and Castbox.
If there is one theme, beyond corruption and a host of economic and social grievances, that have driven protests -- large and small, local, sectoral and national – across the globe, it has been a call for dignity.
Reflecting a global breakdown in confidence in political systems and leadership, the quest for dignity and social justice links protests in Middle Eastern and North African countries like Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria and Sudan to demonstrations in nations on multiple continents ranging from Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Haiti to France, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Pakistan and Hong Kong.
The global protests amount to the latest phase of an era of defiance and dissent that erupted in 201l and unfolded most dramatically in the Middle East and North Africa with the toppling of the autocratic leaders of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.
Of the four Arab nations, only Tunisia has produced a relatively successful transition from autocracy to a more democratic form of government.
Regional and domestic counterrevolutionary forces staged a military coup in 2013 to remove Egypt’s first and only democratically elected president from office, installing one of the country’s most brutal and repressive regime in its post-independence history.
Libya and Yemen are wracked by civil wars, fuelled by foreign intervention. Syria has been devastated by an almost nine-year long civil war between forces supported by outside forces that were determined at whatever cost to decide the fate of the country’s own popular revolt.
Like elsewhere in the region, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan used the 2013 Gezi Park protests, the largest anti-government demonstrations in the decade of his party’s rule, as well as a failed military coup in 2016, to reverse Turkish strides towards democracy and political pluralism.
The Middle East and North Africa’s retreat into more repressive authoritarianism and autocracy coupled with crackdowns of various sorts in Russia, China, Hong Kong, and Kazakhstan, to name just a few examples, has prompted analysts to wonder whether mass protest remains an effective way of achieving political change.
“Only 20 years ago, 70 percent of protests demanding systemic political change got it — a figure that had been growing steadily since the 1950s. In the mid-2000s, that trend suddenly reversed. Worldwide, protesters’ success rate has since plummeted to only 30 percent,” concluded New York Times journalists Max Fisher and Amanda Taub in a column exploring the roots of the current wave of discontent.
Mr. Fisher and Ms. Taub base their conclusion on a study by political scientist Erica Chenoweth that suggests that illiberals, authoritarians and autocrats have become more adept at thwarting protest using what she terms “smart repression.”
Yet, “smart repression” that involves in Ms. Chenoweth’s definitions efforts to ensure the loyalty of elites; greater brutality and violence by security and paramilitary proxies; enhanced censorship and criminalization of dissent; and depicting revolts as foreign-inspired conspiracies and forms of terrorism is at best an upgraded version of standard authoritarian and autocratic responses.
It’s hard to describe what is smart or more sophisticated about the repression involved in the military coup in Egypt and its immediate aftermath in which more than 1,000 people were killed; the arbitrary detentions of prominent businessmen, members of the ruling in family, religious figures and activists in what amounted to a power grab by Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman; the mass detention of an estimated one million Turkic Muslims in re-education camps in China’s troubled, north-western province of Xinjiang; or the arrests of tens of thousands in countries like Turkey and Egypt.
What may provide a better explanation of the reduced effectiveness of protest may be the fact that for the first time since World War Two, the number of countries moving toward authoritarianism exceeds the number moving toward democracy as a result of what political scientists Anna Luehrmann and Staffan Lindberg have dubbed “a third wave of autocratization.”
Underlying that wave is the rise of a critical mass of world leaders that share a belief in illiberal, authoritarian and autocratic principles of governance and disregard human and minority rights in favour of a supremacist endorsement of the rights of an ethnic or religious group.
The rise of those leaders is in many ways the flip side of the protests. They often are political outsiders, men who may or may not be part of the elite like Donald J, Trump in the United States, Victor Orban in Hungary, Narendra Modi in India, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil and Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines but project themselves as forces of change that will tackle the elites’ grip on power.
Aspects of their civilisationalism and reactionary nationalism has empowered and is supported to varying degrees by often opposed political forces that include far-right, anti-migrant and supremacist ethnic and religious groups as well as popular leftists, including some of the Democratic Party presidential candidates in the United States.
The result is a potential vicious circle in which civilizational attitudes, increasingly restricted democratic rights and greater repression marginalize ever more societal groups including significant segments of the middle class as well as minorities who like in the case of Hong Kong, Iraq, Sudan  or Rohingya see their resilience hardened by perceptions of having northing more to lose. Violence on all sides of the divide increases with the risk of militants having a greater appeal.
The conclusions of Ms. Chenoweth, Ms. Luehrmann and Mr. Lindberg would bear that out. If protest is people’s only peaceful alternative in response to unresponsive governments and political forces, undermining the protests’ effectiveness narrows the choices to affect change.
From that perspective, the scholars conclusions would amount to a contemporary adaptation of writer George Orwell’s 1944 assertion that “all revolutions are failures, but they are not all the same failure.”
However, that may be prematurely jumping to conclusions despite what the scholars project trends.
To be sure, the jury is still out on whether the revolts in Tunisia and Sudan will produce enduring political change.
But eight years on from the Arab revolts in 2011, protesters. determined to secure recognition and their place in society, underline lessons learnt by no longer declaring victory once a leader is forced to make concessions or resign as in Algeria and Sudan and by transcending easily exploitable sectarian ethnic and religious divides like in Iraq and Lebanon, a mosaic of 18 carefully balanced sectarian groups.
Said Middle East scholar Hanin Ghaddar: “For the first time in a long time, Lebanese have realized that the enemy is within—it is their own government and political leaders—not an outside occupier or regional influencer… Political leaders have been unable to control the course of the protests, which are taking place across all sects and across all regions… What brought them together is an ongoing economic crisis that has hurt people from all sects and regions.”
The realization that street power needs to be sustained until the modalities of transition are in place is key to enhancing the chances of protest retaining its effectiveness.
The future of protest as an effective tool depends similarly on perceptions of a common interest that transcends sect, ethnicity and class becoming part of the fabric of society.

Multimedia Design at its Finest: 10 Award-Winning Projects
It’s always impressive when a design team pulls off a project in which multiple forms of media are blended into a single interactive masterpiece. Zulu Alpha Kilo’s parody site, which was recognized in the websites category of the HOW International Design Awards last year, comes to mind. They combined hilarious short videos, brilliant photography and interactive elements like a Super-Buzzword™ Generator into an unforgettable experience at one point comically referred to by fictional co-founder Frank Zulu as a “web thingy.” Multimedia design at its finest—and funniest.
Equally impressive is when a team creates a brand identity complete with assets that can be put to work effectively across a variety of applications, from business cards and brand books to websites and environmental graphics—all of which come together to ensure an overall impactful brand.
We’re forever inspired by the creatives behind projects like these. That’s why we’re spotlighting the teams below, who kicked butt when it came to developing a unified look and feel for their respective multimedia design projects—all of which have been recognized in the International Design Awards. (This year’s deadline is Monday 9/25 at 11:59pm EDT. Don’t miss it!)
10 Award-Winning Multimedia Design Projects

The Best of Bold Colour
The Best of Bold Colour
Roundup
by Lucy Feagins, Editor
The Eltham home of John Henry and Deb Ganderton features Verner Panton coloured chairs and a Robert Venturi Chippendale chair, with Peter Wright polka dot artwork. Photo – Sean Fennessy for The Design Files.
Primary Pops
Introducing colour at home doesn’t necessarily mean painting walls and surfaces. A white-on-white scheme is the perfect backdrop for pops of primary colour – seen here in the Eltham home of John Henry and Deb Ganderton, whose colourful Verner Panton chairs and a kaleidoscopic collection of artwork transform this bright, white space.
P.S. I once promised myself I would never used the expression ‘pops of colour’…!  Consider this the first and last time.
Matt and Carly Skinner’s home in Beaumaris. The front lounge room features original bench seating with reupholstery by Grazia & Co, skylight which runs the full length of the room, Supertuft Escape Velour carpet in ‘Abby’, and Treehouse’ artwork by Sally Smart. Photo – Annette O’Brien. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Artist Tai Snaith and Simon Knott’s Northcote home with chairs by Svend Skipper (pink) and Grant Featherston (cream) upstairs, alongside art by Tai (left) and Adam Lee (right). Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
The Beaumaris mid-century home of Grazia Materia and Steve Parry. The kitchen and dining area feature bar stools designed by TH Brown circa 1960, and Australian made Comcork (rubber and cork compound) sheet flooring in ‘safely yellow’. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Surface Switch
Colour can be introduced on any surface – why not try the floor!?
A bright, eye-catching flooring choice can be the perfect treatment in mid century homes, such as Matt and Carly Skinner’s incredible home in Beaumaris, which features Supertuft’s Escape Velour carpet in ‘Abby’.  Carpet is making a comeback!
Louise and Martin McIntosh’s home in Melbourne’s North-Eastern suburbs. The timber-lined ceiling is original, the homeowners added grasscloth wallpaper to the walls, and cushions by Swedish designer Stig Lindberg. Photo – Eve Wilson, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.

Incremental Updates
Contrary to what reality TV would have you believe,  a great interior shouldn’t be completed in a week – banish ‘The Block’ mentality! For an eclectic and authentic feel, beautiful rooms need to be layered and added to over time. This incremental approach frees you up to save for items you REALLY love (buy well, buy once!), and gives you time to develop confidence in your decorating choices.
Even a room with white walls can be given an extraordinary lift when layered with colourful objects and soft furnishings. Fill your bookshelves with colourful books and objects you love, and introduce a bold floor rug or soft furnishings in an accent colour.
Phillip and Lauren Li’s Parkdale home. The master bedroom features pendant light over bedside from Hub, bedlinen from Bedouin Societe, painting by Richard Claremont, side table from Globewest and custom made bedhead. Photo – Eve Wilson for The Design Files.
The North Melbourne home of interior designer Amanda Lynn, her husband Leon Levine (a lawyer), and their much-loved cats  Buster and Ting! Artworks from left to right by: Rick Amor, Mary Pitjara, and Mitjili Napurrula. Revolving bookcase is an early Australian piece, bought by Amanda from an auction many years ago, while the sofa is from Arthur G and yellow lamp Jielde. Photo – Annette O’Brien. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
The home of Jo Dabrowski and Andrew Fisher. The living room features brown leather Longreach sofa by Neil Burly for Anibou (Thonet NZ), coffee table custom-built in London and designed by Andrew Fisher, Bertoia Diamond chairs from Alfie’s Market London, and yellow lamp from Mill Markets, Geelong. Photo – Anette O’Brien. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
The Northcote home of interior designer Amanda Henderson Marks. Above – old French bed with Weylandts side tables and assorted cushions from Amanda’s shop, Gardener and Marks in Albert Park. Bedroom walls are painted in Dulux Companion. Photo – Eve Wilson, styling assistant – Nat Turnbull, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Wall Treatment
YES, painting a room requires a little effort, but it’s also one of the cheapest and easiest ways to give your interiors a major update, without the need for professional help.
If you lack confidence with bright colours, try a mid or charcoal grey – still ‘neutral’, but with a little added oomph!
We also love shades of deep blue and teal in bedrooms and bathrooms, as seen in the homes of interior designers Amanda Henderson Marks and Lauren Li. After all, as Lauren says, ‘Why not splash around some colour, it feels good and makes me happy!’
Annie Price and Jamie Paterson’s mid century home in Beaumaris. Vintage Dutch wallpaper from Etsy, fibre optic lamp from garage sale, print and cushions from an op shop, curtains and small teak table from eBay, and Modular chairs from Charles’ Chairs. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Annie Price and Jamie Paterson’s mid century home in Beaumaris. Vintage Wallpaper from The Bitch is Back in St Kilda, Divan couch by Anderson Furniture Australia (Designer: Gerard Dubey) upholstered in vintage fabrics. Cushions made by Annie from Jamie’s Nan’s old curtains, and actual curtains from eBay. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
The Sydney residence of Karen Julian, her husband Bruce, and their two grown-up daughters, Holly and Megan, features an incredible array of vintage wallpapers. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.

Study nook vintage wallpaper found on eBay, vintage pendant light from eBay, ornaments found at Vinnies, and shelving made by Bruce. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Prints and Patterns
If there’s one thing more anxiety-inducing that choosing a bold paint treatment, it’s installing wallpaper. Terrifying stuff. Understandably, since wallpaper can be a significant investment, and requires an expert to install. (DON’T even think about doing it DIY!)
The right wallpaper, though, can completely transform a room. We loveAnnie Price and Jamie Paterson’s mid century home in Beaumaris, and The Sydney residence of Karen and Bruce Julian, which both feature an incredible array of vintage wallpapers.
Try Flashback Fabric for a brilliant range of retro-inspired options.
In case you missed it in our house tour this morning: inside the Potts Point home of interior decorator Chrissie Jeffery. The master bedroom includes, bedhead in ‘Maggie Linen’ in ‘fig’ with ‘Mrs Munro’ hand-block printed linen on bed, and velvet cushions from Designers Guild. Photo – Nikki To, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
The bold and beautiful home of Kip & Co co-founder Kate Heppell, her partner Mal Heppell (of DMS Landscapes).  Photo – Eve Wilson, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Bold Bedrooms
The bedroom is the most personal of spaces, rarely seen by anyone other than close family. So, if you can’t go BOLD with your decorating choices here, where can you!?
Moody greys and blues are always a popular choice for sleeping quarters, but it’s also worth experimenting with brighter hues!
We love the feminine palette in the home of interior decorator Chrissie Jeffery, and the unexpected orange in Kate and Mal Heppell’s sunny master bedroom!
The North Fitzroy home of Kylie Zerbst (of Obus) and partner Simon Murray. Artwork by Kirra Jamison. Photo – Annette O’Brien, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Start with a Door
My number-one tip for introducing colour at home, particularly if you don’t have the time/money/confidence to tackle a big paint job, is to start with one internal door – so easy!
Just twi litres of paint and an afternoon is all you need!
Madeleine and Jeremy Grummet’s North Caufield family home. Artwork titled ‘Homecoming’ by Luisa Rossitto , op shop Parker chair covered in Warwick ‘Pantone’ fabric, and coloured glass, which has been passed down from family members, bought from op shops, on overseas travels, and from talented local designers. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins/The Design Files.
Inside the home of Madeleine and Jeremy Grummet. The colourful TV/family room features blue Ottoman from Kasbah Imports, hot pink cushion from Curio+Curio,  vintage ceramic racing car made by 13 year old Harriet Grummet. The  Red/pink vessels on shelving are by Madeleine’s friend Emma Davies, and the orange acrylic bird by Madeleine’s other friend Madeleine Stamer. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins/The Design Files.
Colourful Collections
A love of colour usually starts with ‘stuff’. The stuff that catches your eye: bedlinen, cushions, tableware and trinkets… things you buy without much thought for where they will go or how they will be displayed. But, as a collection grows, you often start to see common themes emerge.
Display much loved objects en masse, grouped by material or colour. We’re in awe of the coloured glass collection in the North Caufield home of Madeleine Grummet.
