Roots of Perception: Reflections on Michael Craig-Martin's 'An Oak Tree'

In the early 1970s Michael Craig-Martin created his famous sculpture An Oak Tree 1973. The work consists of a glass of water standing on a shelf. On the wall next to it a text by the artist argues that, despite what your eyes tell you, the glass of water is in fact an oak tree. In 2024 Charles Pigott acknowledged the Oak Tree and presented its roots. The work consist of giving space to the reflection of The Oak, by imagining the image of the glass of water to be seen standing under the shelf. Reflections deny the rules of gravity and that is true of our roots in humanity, even if we are oaks.

After some chaotic years in Ios, Damen returns to the University town of Aquitart as a University tutor in the hopes of trying to recapture old feelings and reunite with his brother. However, on his first day back, when Damen turns up for a meeting with a friend, he instead finds himself being questioned by the police about the disappearance of Auguste d’Vere, his onetime enemy turned friend. Damen and Laurent played a game against each other, they waltzed and danced and fenced around each other. There was no mention of dating or loving each other, no plans or titles or whispered words. When they met it was as natural as two friends’ meeting, yet it was obvious to each other that they were not friends.

They both had a hunger for each other in a way that they both knew about but, neither acted upon. They would meet at cafes and restaurants, drinking coffee and eating decadent food. They saw each other in worn out clothing, freshly woken and worn out so late in the dark that they would welcome the first glints of sunlight together. They would chase each other through the night and laugh and play games with each other, yet neither spoke of what they wanted to be to each other.
