Q and A: The sound of your voice could help fight Covid-19
A recording of a cough, the noise of a person’s breathing or even the sound of their voice could be used to help diagnose patients with Covid-19 in the future, according to Professor Cecilia Mascolo, an expert in mobile health at data analysis at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Prof. Mascolo has developed a sound-collecting app to help train artificial intelligence to detect the tell-tale sounds of coronavirus infection. Created as part of a project called EAR, she hopes it might eventually lead to new ways of diagnosing respiratory diseases and help in the global fight against coronavirus.
Why are noises important when it comes to disease?
The human body makes noises all of the time. Our heart, lungs and digestive system all make noises and they can tell us a lot. Doctors have used these to help them diagnose diseases for a long time. Most people are familiar with the stethoscope around a doctor’s neck for listening to a patient’s heart and lungs. But this technique – auscultation – has almost completely gone from practice in cardiology as it has been replaced by echo-imaging that is done by machine.
How can machines help?
The technique of listening to the body is actually very difficult for humans to acquire without a lot of training, but machines are much better at it. Artificial intelligence technologies like machine learning can identify features or patterns in a sound that the human ear cannot. They can also “listen” to sounds that are beyond human hearing – microphones can pick up a lot of noise that our ears cannot. Ultrasound, for example, is already used a lot for diagnostics, but unlike an ultrasound scan that relies upon sound waves bouncing back to a microphone, we (on the EAR project) are just listening to those produced by the body.
We are not the first people to try to automate listening to the body in this way. But the main problem is there is not a lot of large data sets to train machine learning algorithms to do this effectively, so that is something our project is trying to collect.
Professor Cecilia Mascolo at the University of Cambridge, UK, hopes her coronavirus sounds app could provide the data needed to build a quick and cheap Covid-19 screening test in the future. Image credit – Salvatore Scellato
Is this what led you to build the Covid-19 Sounds app?
Our project actually started in October before the coronavirus outbreak started. The first thing we were trying was to look at cardiovascular sounds, but when the coronavirus started spreading, we decided to build an application that would gather data about it instead. We are hoping to use machine learning to identify certain characteristics that could be used to diagnose someone with a Covid-19 infection.
What information are you collecting?
We have a website (which went live at the start of April) and an Android app (launched a few weeks later) that people can download. We then ask them some basic medical questions, along with whether they have been tested and diagnosed with Covid-19. We also ask them if they have any symptoms. They then record themselves breathing, speaking and coughing.
What does Covid-19 sound like?
It is still too early for us to have a definite answer as we are just starting to collect the data, but there have been some research papers that indicate the cough that comes with Covid-19 has some specific features – it has been described as being a dry cough (with some specific distinguishing features that allow it to be identified). Having spoken to doctors who are treating people (Covid-19 patients) in hospitals, there may be some changes to their voice, their patterns of breathing or the way they catch their breath as they talk like they are exhausted. We are looking at all of these things by asking participants to record themselves breathing and reading sentences out loud.
Can your app help with the global response to coronavirus?
The machine learning (algorithm) will analyse the recordings we collect to see if it can spot anything different in the voice, cough and breathing of people who have coronavirus. If we do find something, then that could be used to create a diagnostic tool.
How might that work?
For cardiovascular disease we checked with an iPhone on the heart in different positions and found the microphone was enough to pick up the sound of the valves as it pumps blood (and so could be enough for respiratory diseases too). If the machine learning algorithm learns to distinguish Covid-19 patients from their cough, for example, it might be also be possible to record a cough or their voice on their phone. Then the algorithm can say whether someone has a cough like those we have classified as having the disease. There might need to be a second line of diagnostic test after that to confirm, but it could be a cheap and quick (screening) test.
‘Having spoken to doctors who are treating people (Covid-19 patients) in hospitals, there may be some changes to their voice, their patterns of breathing or the way they catch their breath.’
Prof. Cecilia Mascolo, University of Cambridge, UK
How many people contributed so far?
We had 3,000 in the first three days from the website alone before the Android app went live and that number is growing. But to be useful we are going to need tens of thousands of people taking part. So far, we have less than 50 people who have said they have tested positive for coronavirus. We need more positives. We are trying to get the app into hospitals to reach positive patients in triage sites.
What challenges have you faced?
We have had to be very clear with people that this is not a diagnostic tool at the moment. We are not giving them a result from the recordings they are giving us, it is just for data collection so we can analyse it and hopefully build something later. We are also having to be very careful with the data we collect as it is a lot of personal information and recordings of people’s voices. While we want to make the data public at some point in the future, we will have to ensure it is anonymised.
The other major hurdle has been with getting the apps published. Google restricted who could publish apps to do with Covid-19 to avoid misinformation, but we argued ours is helping in the global fight (and came from a reputable source) so they reviewed it and allowed it to go live. The app will also allow us to follow up by asking users every three days for updates so we can see how their condition progresses. We are also hoping to develop an app for iOS soon too, but we were able to do one quicker for Android.
Is there a danger your analysis will come too late for Covid-19?
It is definitely going to take some time, but there are some countries that are quite a bit behind. There is also talk of the virus coming in waves. We don’t know how successful lockdown will be and when it will end, so we are hoping our research will be useful for these later stages.
Will this research be useful after Covid-19?
There is a chance the data we are collecting now could also identify diagnostic sounds for other conditions such as asthma. We don’t know yet. Our big vision though is for machine learning algorithms to be linked to wearable devices and smartphones so it can automate the diagnosis of disease through sound. Most of us might have a doctor listen to our body’s sounds periodically, but what happens if you have something that can listen to you continuously. It could be a new form of diagnostic. We just have to listen to our bodies more.
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity and length.

Breaking Point: How Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook Became Foes SAN FRANCISCO — At a confab for tech and media moguls in Sun Valley, Idaho, in July 2019, Timothy D. Cook of Apple and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook sat down to repair their fraying relationship. For years, the chief executives had met annually at the conference, which was held by the investment bank Allen & Company, to catch up. But this time, Facebook was grappling with a data privacy scandal. Mr. Zuckerberg had been blasted by lawmakers, regulators and executives — including Mr. Cook — for letting the information of more than 50 million Facebook users be harvested by a voter-profiling firm, Cambridge Analytica, without their consent. At the meeting, Mr. Zuckerberg asked Mr. Cook how he would handle the fallout from the controversy, people with knowledge of the conversation said. Mr. Cook responded acidly that Facebook should delete any information that it had collected about people outside of its core apps. Mr. Zuckerberg was stunned, said the people, who were not authorized to speak publicly. Facebook depends on data about its users to target them with online ads and to make money. By urging Facebook to stop gathering that information, Mr. Cook was in effect telling Mr. Zuckerberg that his business was untenable. He ignored Mr. Cook’s advice. Two years later, Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Cook’s opposing positions have exploded into an all-out war. On Monday, Apple plans to release a new privacy feature that requires iPhone owners to explicitly choose whether to let apps like Facebook track them across other apps. One of the secrets of digital advertising is that companies like Facebook follow people’s online habits as they click on other programs, like Spotify and Amazon, on smartphones. That data helps advertisers pinpoint users’ interests and better target finely tuned ads. Now, many people are expected to say no to that tracking, delivering a blow to online advertising — and Facebook’s $70 billion business. At the center of the fight are the two C.E.O.s. Their differences have long been evident. Mr. Cook, 60, is a polished executive who rose through Apple’s ranks by constructing efficient supply chains. Mr. Zuckerberg, 36, is a Harvard dropout who built a social-media empire with an anything-goes stance toward free speech. Those contrasts have widened with their deeply divergent visions for the digital future. Mr. Cook wants people to pay a premium — often to Apple — for a safer, more private version of the internet. It is a strategy that keeps Apple firmly in control. But Mr. Zuckerberg champions an “open” internet where services like Facebook are effectively free. In that scenario, advertisers foot the bill. The relationship between the chief executives has become increasingly chilly, people familiar with the men said. While Mr. Zuckerberg once took walks and dined with Steve Jobs, Apple’s late co-founder, he does not do so with Mr. Cook. Mr. Cook regularly met with Larry Page, Google’s co-founder, but he and Mr. Zuckerberg see each other infrequently at events like the Allen & Company conference, these people said. The executives have also jabbed at each other. In 2017, a Washington political firm funded by Facebook and other Apple rivals published anonymous articles criticizing Mr. Cook and created a false campaign to draft him as a presidential candidate, presumably to upend his relationship with former President Donald J. Trump. And when Mr. Cook was asked by MSNBC in 2018 how he would deal with Facebook’s privacy issues if he was in Mr. Zuckerberg’s shoes, he replied, “I wouldn’t be in this situation.” Apple and Facebook declined to make Mr. Cook and Mr. Zuckerberg available for interviews and said the men have no personal animosity toward each other. Regarding the new privacy feature, Apple said, “We simply believe users should have the choice over the data that is being collected about them and how it’s used.” Facebook said Apple’s feature was not about privacy and was instead about profit. “Free, ad-supported services have been essential to the growth and vitality of the internet, but Apple is trying to rewrite the rules in a way that benefits them and holds back everyone else,” a spokeswoman said. A Chasm Opens Mr. Cook and Mr. Zuckerberg first intersected more than a decade ago, when Mr. Cook was second in command at Apple and Facebook was a start-up. At the time, Apple saw Facebook as a hedge against Google, the search giant that had expanded into mobile phone software with Android, a former Apple executive said. Around 2010, Eddy Cue, who leads Apple’s digital services, sought out Mr. Zuckerberg for a potential software partnership, the former executive said. In the ensuing meetings, Mr. Zuckerberg told Mr. Cue that Apple had to deliver a great deal for a partnership, or the social network would be happy to go it alone, this person said. Some Apple executives felt those interactions showed that Mr. Zuckerberg was arrogant, this person added. Two other people said that the talks were cordial and that they were confused by the characterization of the meetings. The discussions eventually led to a software feature that let iPhone owners share their photos directly to Facebook. But the friction had set the tone. The situation was complicated as Facebook and Apple also became mutually dependent. The iPhone was a key device for people to use Facebook’s mobile app. And Facebook’s apps — which later also included Instagram and the messaging service WhatsApp — have been some of the most downloaded programs from Apple’s App Store. By 2014, Facebook executives had grown fearful of the leverage that Apple had over the distribution of its apps with iPhone customers. Those concerns were compounded when Apple at times delayed updates of Facebook’s apps through its App Store, said people familiar with the matter. In February 2014, when Facebook’s board met to discuss Project Cobalt, which was a potential acquisition of an unidentified large social app, Apple’s power was top of mind. Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, argued for the deal partly to protect the social network from Apple’s and Google’s control over smartphone software, according to the meeting’s minutes, which were released last year as part of a congressional investigation into tech companies. Let Us Help You Protect Your Digital Life Adding another popular app to Facebook’s offerings “would make it more difficult for operating system providers to exclude the company’s mobile applications from mobile platforms,” Ms. Sandberg said. Mr. Cook, too, began thinking more negatively of Facebook, former Apple executives said. After the 2016 presidential election, federal authorities revealed that Russians had misused Facebook to inflame American voters. In 2018, the Cambridge Analytica revelations broke, highlighting Facebook’s collection of user data. Mr. Cook decided to distance Apple from Facebook, the people said. While Mr. Cook had raised privacy as an issue as early as 2015, he ramped that up in 2018. Apple also unveiled a new corporate motto: “Privacy is a fundamental human right.” This was in line with Apple’s marketing pitch, which was that people should buy $1,000 iPhones to help protect themselves from the internet’s harms. When asked in an interview that year on MSNBC about Cambridge Analytica, Mr. Cook called the situation “dire” and suggested “some well-crafted regulation is necessary” for Facebook. Then, at its 2018 developer conference, Apple unveiled technology changes that struck at Facebook’s ad business. Those included a built-in screen-time tracker for iPhones that let users set time limits on certain apps, which affected companies like Facebook that need people to spend time in apps to show them more ads. Apple also said that to protect people’s privacy, it would require companies to get permission from users of its Safari internet browser to track them across different websites. Facebook has used such “cookie” tracking technology to gather data, which enables it to charge advertisers more. “It really spoke to the power of Apple controlling the operating system,” said Brian Wieser, president of business intelligence at GroupM, an advertising industry firm. “Facebook isn’t in control of its own destiny.” At Facebook, Apple’s privacy moves were viewed as hypocritical, said three current and former Facebook employees. Apple has long had a lucrative arrangement with Google to plug Google’s data-hungry search engine into Apple products, for instance. Facebook executives also noted that Apple was entrenched in China, where the government surveils its citizens. Privately, Mr. Zuckerberg told his lieutenants that Facebook “needed to inflict pain” upon Apple and Mr. Cook, said a person with knowledge of the discussions. The Wall Street Journal previously reported Mr. Zuckerberg’s comment. Behind the scenes, that work had already begun. In 2017, Facebook had expanded its work with Definers Public Affairs, a Washington firm that specialized in opposition research against its clients’ political foes. Definers employees distributed research about Apple’s compromises in China to reporters, and a website affiliated with Definers published articles criticizing Mr. Cook, according to documents and former Definers employees. Definers also began an “astroturfing” campaign to draft Mr. Cook as a 2020 presidential candidate, presumably to put him in President Trump’s cross hairs, The New York Times reported in 2018. A website, “Draft Tim Cook 2020,” featured a lofty quote from the chief executive and a model campaign platform for him. Data behind the website linked it to Definers. (Definers’ work against Apple was also funded by Qualcomm, another Apple rival, according to a Definers employee. Facebook fired Definers after The Times reported on its activity.) Apple and Facebook have also started competing in other areas, including messaging, mobile gaming and “mixed-reality” headsets, which are essentially eyeglasses that mix digital images into a person’s view of the world. By the 2019 Sun Valley meeting, Mr. Zuckerberg’s and Mr. Cook’s relationship had reached a low. Then it got even worse. App Tracking At Apple’s virtual developer conference last June, Katie Skinner, a manager on the privacy team, announced that the company planned a new iPhone feature to require apps to get users’ consent to track them across different apps. She discussed it for just 20 seconds. To Facebook, it was a declaration of war, three current and former employees said. If people were given the option to not be tracked, that could hurt Facebook’s ad business, the executives figured. Over the next few months, Facebook and Apple sniped at each other over the feature in letters to privacy organizations and advertising coalitions. Then in December, Facebook took out full-page ads in The Times and other publications about the change. It declared Apple’s privacy feature would hurt small businesses’ ability to advertise and said it was “standing up to Apple.” Facebook also met with advertising clients to warn them about Apple’s change, according to a copy of a December video presentation that was viewed by The Times. “Apple made unilateral decisions without consulting the industry about a policy that will have far-reaching harm on businesses of all sizes,” a Facebook product director said in the presentation. “The impact of Apple’s changes makes it harder to grow. And for some, even survive.” Apple delayed the feature so apps and advertisers could prepare, but Mr. Cook refused to change how it worked. And in a picture to show the new feature, Apple used an image of a familiar app: Facebook. Mr. Zuckerberg has since shifted his tune about Apple’s move. With Wall Street nervous about the effect on Facebook’s business, he said in a March interview on the audio chat app Clubhouse that Apple’s feature could benefit the social network. If advertisers struggled to find customers across different apps, he said, they might gravitate more toward Facebook because of its already enormous troves of data. “It’s possible that we may even be in a stronger position,” he said. But Mr. Zuckerberg has also been blunt about Facebook’s feelings on Apple. “We increasingly see Apple as one of our biggest competitors,” he said in an earnings call this year. Even on that point, Mr. Cook has disagreed. “I’m not focused on Facebook,” he told The Times this month. “I think that we compete in some things. But no, if I’m asked who our biggest competitors are, they would not be listed.” Source link Orbem News #breaking #cook #Foes #Mark #Point #Tim #Zuckerberg

Guy Who Reverse-Engineered TikTok Reveals the Scary Things He Learned
Facebook got itself into a sensitive data scandal when it did shady business with Cambridge Analytica, Instagram confirmed a security issue exposing user accounts and phone numbers, but these apps are basically online security havens compared to TikTok, according to one senior software engineer with about 15 years of professional experience.
2 months ago, Reddit user bangorlol made a comment in a discussion about TikTok. Bangorlol claimed to have successfully reverse-engineered it and shared what he learned about the Chinese video-sharing social networking service. Basically, he strongly recommended that people never use the app again, warning about its intrusive user tracking and other issues. Considering that TikTok was the 4th most popular free iPhone app download in 2019, this is quite alarming.
Image credits: Marco Verch
Bangorlol is no script kiddie. “The last several years of my career has been based around reversing mobile applications, analyzing how they work, and building additional third-party functionality around them,” he told Bored Panda. “A rough example would be me noticing that Twitter doesn’t show you a sequential timeline (no idea if they do or not) on the website but does on the app. I’d go into the Android or iOS version, find the requests that get the correct data, and build a third-party tool (app, website, browser extension) to give users this functionality.”
“Lately, it mostly involves reversing my company’s partner APIs so we don’t have to wait for them to create something custom for us. I hunt bug bounties when I’ve got the time, or help my friends out with theirs (or their CTF challenges). I like security in general and typically find at least a few major flaws whenever I change employers. I’m kind of a ‘jack of all trades’ kind of guy in the sense that I’m comfortable in most areas of software engineering and mostly pretty okay with many security topics.”
Reportedly, it took 200 days for the Chinese development team to create the original version of TikTok, but when Bangorlol got his cursor on its code, it had no chance. Although, it did try to put up a fight. “TikTok put a lot of effort into preventing people like me from figuring out how their app works. There’s a ton of obfuscation involved at all levels of the application, from your standard Android variable renaming grossness to them (bytedance) forking and customizing ollvm for their native stuff. They hide functions, prevent debuggers from attaching, and employ quite a few sneaky tricks to make things difficult. Honestly, it’s more complicated and annoying than most games I’ve targeted,” Bangorlol explained.
Such secrecy is understandable. TikTok’s earnings have risen proportionately with its increase in popularity and its owner ByteDance made a net profit of $3 billion last year, according to a report from Bloomberg.
Bangorlol thinks that we as a society have normalized giving away our personal information and have no expectations of privacy and security anymore, so giving TikTok our data together with our money is nothing surprising. “The general consensus among most ‘normal’ people is that they can’t/won’t be targeted, so it’s fine. Or that they have nothing to hide, so ‘why should I even care?’ I think the apathy is sourced from people just not understanding the security implications (at all levels) of handing over our data to a foreign government that doesn’t discriminate against who they target, and also doesn’t really have the best track record when it comes to human rights,” he said.
Keep in mind that Bangorlol released his initial commentary a while ago and hasn’t touched the app in months, and when he posted his findings, they were also a few months behind. “The app could’ve changed fingerprinting techniques or added/removed some of the nasty things they do. I strongly encourage security researchers who are much smarter than me and have more free time to take a look at the app and scrutinize every little detail they can. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the native libraries for at least the Android version that I wasn’t able to figure out and didn’t have the time to investigate further,” he added.
“TikTok might not meet the exact criteria to be called “Malware”, but it’s definitely nefarious and (in my humble opinion) outright evil,” Bangorlol said. “There’s a reason governments are banning it. Don’t use the app. Don’t let your children use it. Tell your friends to stop using it. It offers you nothing but a quick source of entertainment that you can get elsewhere without handing your data over to the Chinese government. You are directly putting yourself and those on your network (work and home) at risk.”
Here’s what people said after going through TikTok’s issues

Apocalypse Soon: What happens when the iOS advertising ID is deprecated?

It’s rare for me to speak with a mobile advertiser that doesn’t view the deprecation of the IDFA — Apple’s proprietary advertising identifier for iOS devices — as a certainty, if not an imminent one. While the deprecation of the IDFA has been a possibility for years, and rumors of the identifier’s demise reliably circulate before every WWDC, a few recent developments support the notion that 2020 might usher in the end of an advertising ID for iOS devices:
In its most recent earnings call, Facebook’s CFO cryptically made reference to upcoming changes by mobile platform operators that will introduce friction into the process of mobile advertising measurement;
Facebook has also made some other changes that tangentially could relate to a potential end of the IDFA: it announced that it will no longer operate its Audience Network on the mobile web, and that it has modified its MMP program to disallow the sharing of view-through attribution data at the user level (see a note from Adjust below). Again, while neither of these issues directly relates to mobile advertising tracking or the relevance of an IDFA, they do both support a more privacy-centric posturing by Facebook that was perhaps taken to appease Apple;
Apple updated its iOS developer guidelines after last year’s WWDC developer event to bar apps in the Kids category from using third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. This was interpreted by many as a dry-run for full IDFA deprecation;
Google announced that it will phase out 3rd-party cookies from the Chrome browser within two years. Although Apple already does this with its Safari browser on mobile by default, Chrome has a much larger marketshare, and so this is a bigger development. While it is popular wisdom that the deprecation of the IDFA by Apple would likely instigate Google to deprecate the Android-equivalent GAID, given Chrome’s reach, it could be that Apple decides to one-up Google on the basis of privacy by reacting with the IDFA deprecation;
Apple introduced Sign in with Apple at WWDC 2019 as a means of allowing users to tie app- and website-specific authentication to their Apple IDs, meaning that Apple could ultimately be the route between devices and third-party platform IDs.
Of course, all of these development could merely be coincidental to a decision by Apple to deprecate the IDFA; Tim Cook seems zealously protective of user privacy, and the large mobile platforms generally appear to be eager to stave off invasive regulation in the wake of public furor over privacy incidents such as with Cambridge Analytica, etc.
And obviously, IDFA deprecation may not actually be on the immediate horizon, and it may not happen at all. But it’s interesting to consider what happens to the mobile advertising industry if it does, given the incredibly prominent role that the IDFA plays in even the most sophisticated advertisers’ attribution models for iOS. To that end, I present: a speculative, assumption-dependent vision of the first few months after the deprecation of the IDFA.
June 2020
Apple’s annual WWDC developer conference reveals a slew of new features coming to iOS 14 later in the year. Cryptically, Apple’s Vice President of Engineering, Craig Federighi, reveals that Apple has implemented a “simplified system profile” on iOS that limits the surface area of device information that can be collected by an app. The “simplified system profile” was first introduced to Safari in macOS Mojave in 2018 to stop devices from being fingerprinted by advertising networks. Marketing blogs and MarTech Twitter alight with speculation about the implications of this change.
Following the keynote, the first beta of iOS 14 is released to registered developers, and an important update to the documentation for the advertisingIdentifier property, which stores the user’s IDFA, is discovered (bolded text is new):
Important In iOS 10.0 and later, the value of advertisingIdentifier is all zeroes when the user has limited ad tracking. In iOS 14.0 and later, limit ad tracking is enabled by default.
Tech commentators immediately seize upon this revelation and declare that default IDFA zeroing will effectuate the end of direct response mobile advertising. Assuming that the iOS 14 adoption timeline resembles that of iOS 13, it is estimated that 50% of iOS devices will have limit ad tracking (LAT) enabled within a month of iOS 14’s release in September, and nearly all iOS devices will have limit ad tracking enabled by September 2021.
The mobile advertising technology ecosystem enters a state of panic, organizing war room meetings to come up with strategies for handling the monumental change coming to their industry in September, just three months away. Ad tech suppliers wonder if any additional device-level properties can be added to their models to improve the precision of fingerprinting, which, under the new “simplified system profile,” will only be reliable for a few minutes after an install. But most recognize that Apple is committed to removing or obfuscating these unique device signatures, such as when it added noise to device sensor data in iOS 12.2 as per the recommendations of this research paper. The changes implemented to iOS 14 are interpreted to be grievously dangerous by mobile ad tech vendors.
Privacy advocates very vocally champion both the mobile simplified system profile and the new default limit ad tracking setting.
July 2020
Facebook announces that it will stop sending user-level data to its attribution partners for both iOS and Android, across all campaign objectives, by September. The move is unexpected and widely interpreted as being a concession to Apple in order to continue attributing users with its own proprietary data collected from its SDK. Google, Twitter, Snap, and Pinterest all announce very similar policy changes just a few days after Facebook.
These announcement stun the mobile advertising industry: if Facebook, Google, et al no longer relay user-level data to measurement partners, then install and event-based campaign types like Facebook’s AEO and VO and Google’s UAC can only be assessed for ROAS via aggregated, campaign-level data from the platforms themselves.
Mobile advertisers become anxious: what does this mean for measurement? And how will non-Self Attributing Network (SAN) sources of traffic be evaluated? App advertisers are unable to glean much helpful information from MMP partners, Apple, or their account representatives at various networks.
August 2020
Apple announces the first set of members of its new Certified Mobile Advertising Partners program: advertising platforms that are registered to attribute installs via the SDKAdNetwork API that Apple introduced in iOS 11. The list of partners includes most of the largest and most prominent providers of mobile traffic.
At this point, advertisers begin to get a clearer picture of the future of mobile measurement and the severity of the changes being instituted. If attribution is handled directly from iTunes and doesn’t include user device identifiers, then the impending new reality of advertising dictates:
ROAS and CPE campaigns will only be possible via the SANs that are able to do any form of fingerprinting via their proprietary SDK data and the revenue data they collect;
Cost Per Install values for campaigns from the networks in Apple’s Ad Partners program are calculable, but building effective ROAS models for these campaigns will be difficult, if not impossible. Without being able to attribute revenue to campaigns (because all IDFAs are zeroed, and SKAdNetwork transmits no identifiable user information), the traffic sources of monetizing users are unknowable;
Most of the infrastructure currently supporting mobile advertising will soon become obsolete.
Advertisers scramble to assemble data science teams to build Media Mix Models from their existing data and to validate their current ROAS models. Shifting from deterministic measurement to probabilistic measurement will take time; in the interim, their ROAS models can be used to provide credible assumptions around what various traffic is worth. Advertisers also begin attempting to re-negotiate their contracts with technology and data partners, recognizing that many of these partners won’t be needed in their new measurement paradigms.
Google announces that it will also turn on “Opt out of Ads Personalization” by default in the next Android release.
September 2020
iOS 14 is released to the general public. Almost immediately, CPMs on mobile plummet as advertisers reduce media spend across the board. Some apps see their advertising revenues drop by half; apps that rely exclusively on advertising for user acquisition experience shrinking DAU levels. Advertisers concentrate media spend across Apple Search Ads, Facebook, and Google while conservatively layering in traffic from other sources as measured through attributed installs from iTunes (via SKAdNetwork) in a media mix model. Many advertisers note that their Facebook install volumes have decreased relative to levels from before iOS 14, recognizing that fingerprinting may have previously over-attributed LAT installs to Facebook.
December 2020
By the end of the year, most advertisers have adjusted to the new ecosystem reality, although overall mobile advertising spend is about 10% lower than it had been one year prior. Since iOS 14 was launched, a major ad network acquired an attribution provider and is using its data to develop a media mix model service. Because of the added complexity of tracking and measuring the effectiveness of media spend, a large proportion of smaller advertisers are now only advertising on either Facebook or Google and Apple Search Ads; larger advertisers have built their own infrastructure to aggregate campaign-level install data and integrate it into their media mix model.
Consumer sentiment around Apple’s privacy changes to iOS 14 was overwhelmingly positive in June, but the fanfare waned over time and those changes are rarely cited or referenced going into the new year.
