THE YARDS (2000) Grade: C
I didn’t find it very entertaining and kinda predictable to be honest. Great cast. James Caan was good in his part. Mark Wahlberg was average, someone else would had done more with the character. He always had the same face in this movie.

Charlie Davoli - Artist Research
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Born in Singapore as an Italian who specialises in matte paint, Charlie Davoli brings both rich cultures into his aesthetic and in the mix of his works. Davoli turned to graphic design and photography in 2006 after his success in indie performances as a musician. Saturated in such an energetic and innovative context, Charlie Davoli holds his music as a strong sense of inspiration as an avid collector of the visual corollary that has been carried along with the acts of various musicians, from impactful album covers of Pink floyd, to the expressive world of Andy Warhol.
Recreating anomalous visual scenes, Davoli started taking pictures with an iPhone and thus acquiring an experimentation of the photographic means, whom is close to the realm of creating fantastical atmospheres which are disconnected from reality. Utilising his favourite source of socials, Instagram has become his communication from which the I-Phone series (2012-2016), Phase in to the life (2015), and The Photoshop series (2016) were born. Forming an immense archive of images, he then grew into the use of the camera (reflex), which he still prefers today; involving the observer in subtle interferences of universal geometries and deceptive perspectives.
In the 1970s, a visual narrative was condensed into a single frame and finished with titles, providing the spectator the proper input to indicate an unlimited variety of experiences. Charlie Davoli's photography work shares similarities with this style. Similar to Charlie Davoli, who views photography as a humorous tool for mocking reality, the narrative aspect draws the audience in while also removing them from the mundane and relentless repetition of reality.
Broadcast and Stereolab are more modern bands that include all the processes of the sensory perception sphere into their music, while Pink Floyd and Sonic Youth from the past have contributed the visual element and vision of art as a way of holistic communication. The Science Fiction vintage culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s, which was influenced by a mass culture capable of analysing social changes brought about by science and technology from a scientific, sociological, and psychological point of view, is also fascinating to Charlie Davoli's photographic dictionary.
Davoli, a representative of a world hovering between dreams and reality, is inspired by the Surrealist and Metaphysical ascendant of avant-garde painting. He also finds inspiration in the Bauhaus' rationalist geometry, which gives him a rational and pure sense of control over the camera and the editing process.

Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix in The Yards (James Gray, 2000)
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron, James Caan, Ellen Burstyn, Faye Dunaway, Steve Lawrence, Andy Davoli, Tony Musante, Victor Argo, Tomas Milian, Robert Montano. Screenplay: James Gray, Matt Reeves. Cinematography: Harris Savides. Production design: Kevin Thompson. Film editing: Jeffrey Ford. Music: Howard Shore.
With its powerhouse cast acting glum, The Yards is a slow downer of a movie. But it repays attention, immersing us in an almost too-familiar milieu, the Mean Streets of New York City. It's more elegiac than the visions of the milieu given us by Scorsese, Coppola, Lumet and many others, portraying a city almost beyond hope and reform, in which the well-meaning can be dragged down by circumstance. Leo Handler (Mark Wahlberg) is certainly well-meaning: Just out of prison for a crime for which he took the fall for his friends, he would like to stay straight if only to help his ailing mother (Ellen Burstyn), but the corruption that is eating his friends and family, particularly his friend Willie Gutierrez (Joaquin Phoenix) and his uncle Frank (James Caan), is bound to swallow him up, too. Eventually, meaning well is not enough, and Leo finds himself taking the fall again. In the end, it turns out that the only way to fight the kind of corruption that ensnares Leo is with corruption itself, a truly vicious cycle. James Gray's steady, slow direction probably tested audiences too much, for the film was a box office loser. But it boasts superb ensemble work, with standout performances from Phoenix and Caan and particularly from Charlize Theron as Erica, Leo's cousin and Willie's girfriend. Howard Shore's music underscores Gray's melancholy vision.

Behind the scenes from Knockaround Guys.
I found it interesting how Barry pretends to get f*cked by Diesel. He uses Andy Davoli but he says “Yeah, Vinnie, oh yeah, Vinnie!” and Andy says “Yeah, I’m Diesel”. Vin is filming.
Someone off camera then starts quoting a scene from the movie. Where Brucker says: “500 what, douche bag?”
And then instead, they changed Taylor’s quote to: “500 little bullets banged in the ass.”
So were they actually referring to Vin Diesel, or were they calling him Vin, but referring to Taylor? Without context it’s hard to tell what’s going on but one must wonder if this was a re-enactment of Matty and Taylor screwing.
***
Then the next behind-the-scenes scene, Barry says “we’re gay!” Again, no context, but I wonder if he was referring to Matty and Taylor.

Doyle says, "Once I settled on the concept, I started hunting down any and all of the TV and movie themes having to do with detectives and spies, while trying to avoid obvious ones like "Peter Gunn," which has been done to death, and "Perry Mason," which I had already recorded on the first Guitar Noir album. I ended up choosing the themes that were most melodic and dramatic, since melody is to me the most important thing in an instrumental album. I uncovered some absolutely amazing music: Nelson Riddle's "The Untouchables," Elmer Bernstein's "Johnny Staccato" and Dave Grusin's "It Takes a Thief" are only three examples. When I ran out of things that moved me, I had to write two pieces that hopefully fulfill the criteria and stay true to the genre." The album also contains two pieces outside of the concept - Frank Zappa's "America Drinks and Goes Home" (arranged as a ballad) and Louis Cole's "Everytime." These were the first two pieces recorded before the Detectives concept had been finalized, and Doyle felt that they were too strong to let go of. Mark Doyle has had a distinguished career in the music business since his first band, Jukin’ Bone, was signed to RCA while Mark was in his late teens. He’s gone on to make records as guitarist or producer with David Werner, Cindy Bullens,Andy Pratt, Leo Sayer, Hall & Oates, Judy Collins, Meat Loaf, Bryan Adams, and Mary Fahl and has provided string arrangements for numerous recordings by the likes of New Kids On The Block, The Cavedogs, The Stylistics, andTiffany. He currently leads his own band, Mark Doyle & The Maniacs, who have released six albums and play consistently throughout the Northeast, and tours as Music Director/guitarist/pianist for former October Project singer Mary Fahl. - Praise for Mark Doyle’s first Guitar Noir - “Bridging the gap between soundtracks, jazz and rock is no easy task, yet in the hands of Mark Doyle & Co., the results are engaging and often spectacular.” - Robert Silverstein, 20th Century Guitar “Doyle lays down some nasty notes and tones. A gorgeous cover of “When I Fall In Love” shows him to be master of volume swells and sweet, stinging sustain.” - John Heidt, Vintage Guitar “By fearlessly venturing into musical territory that is surely foreign to many of his peers, Doyle has notched an impressive artistic achievement.” - Russ Tarby, Syracuse New Times - Praise for In Dreams: Guitar Noir II - "It doesn’t get much better than this. A great idea and perfect execution make this the latest in a long line of fine instrumental albums from Doyle. He produced the CD, played all the instruments, and came up with a great concept that works from the first track through cut 11."
