Noticed in Ch. 6 of RDR2, you can see the pollution from Cornwall's oil town, Annesburg. Oil shimmering in water. Cans littering the sandy waterside. Discarded boxes and barrels no one has bothered to clean up. Clearly a place of exploitation, both of nature and man.
