I’d rather be friends with people who are flawed yet kind people over people who are outwardly mean in the guise of ‘owning it’

The same thing that I wrote about Paris and Rory applies to Serena and Blair. Fans complain constantly that "Serena took everything from poor Blair" but past season 1 that's not true at all.
The examples that they bring up are the girls in school, the fashion show, Yale and Dan.
The girls in school - this was literally Chuck's doing. It was Chuck's mastermind level manipulation of everyone involved, yet these fans will ignore that because they usually love Chuck. But let's take Chuck out of the equation for a second and focus just on Blair and Serena - those girls are like mocking birds, they flock to everyone. That week it was Serena, a week before that it was Blair, a year before that it was Jenny. Serena didn't "steal" Blair's friends, Blair's "friends" are just not very good friends that change loyalties all the time.
The fashion show- I don't understand how can anyone watch this episode and not hate Blair. Even when I was a fan of hers, she pissed me off here. She was acting like a 5-year-old and literally sabotaged herself and then cried about it. So her mother rejected her seating chart, which other people in the company agreed was weak because she prioritized bribing her "friends" with second row tickets over actually making a chart that makes sense. Jenny then suggested putting semi-famous Serena and Poppy in the front row and Blair threw a hissy fit and tried to sabotage the entire fashion show, which is the source of her mother's income. She sent the models home which prompted Eleanor to make Serena and Poppy the models. She did this to herself. Throughout the episode she just kept digging her own grave deeper and deeper.
Yale- Serena was waving the white flag at school but instead of accepting peace, Blair had to attack Serena's intelligence. Was it petty of Serena to apply to Yale just to spite Blair? Yes, but if Blair had not insulted her, she would not have done that. Also Blair doesn't own Yale. You can't own a school? Serena was free to apply to any school she wanted. The reason Serena was invited to the Dean's house not Blair is because Serena made a good impression and Blair did not, simple as that. Serena didn't take anything from Blair, they both had equal opportunities. And the reason Blair got rejected from Yale in the end had even nothing to do with Serena, it was all her doing, so I don't get why people still say that Serena "stole Yale" from Blair.
Dan- while I am a huge Dair shipper, Blair did choose to date Serena's ex knowing that Serena was uncomfortable with it, so it is debatable who "stole" from who here.
"But Blair works hard!" How exactly? And when? Yes, Blair is more focused on school than Serena but if we look at actual work, then Serena is much more of a working girl than Blair. Blair looks down on work and tells Eva to wear gloves to cover her working hands ffs! I am not talking about book Blair here because that one was actually focused and had a lot of volunteering and extracurriculars on her plate. The show Blair however only "works" by scheming, manipulating and blackmailing people. We see her do exactly one (1) internship before deciding to be a princess. Serena on the other hand worked in PR, worked on Tripp's campaign (even though we know how that turned out), worked on movie sets and on The Spectator with Nate iirc. Yes, it is unrealistic how these opportunities seemingly fell from the sky into her lap, like when she got offered a job on the movie set because she read the book. In that way Serena was extremely lucky. So in that sense I understand why people prefer Blair - because it's much easier to relate to someone with insecurities who gets in her own way than someone confident who seemingly gets opportunities falling into her lap.

This one stupid Blair twerp said Serena defenders are sick and I seriously had to resist from busting up laughing. Blair twerps for one things are exactly why asylums need to make a comeback, and will defend Blair being a cruel, selfish, bratty entitled, snobby stuck up brat who judges people by their tax bracket but Serena fans are the ones who are sick ? I’m sorry but I can’t 🥴🥴 what’s so funny is every Serena Stan I’ve met is super nice and friendly for one thing and every Blair twerp I’ve met is straight up awful and legit mentally crazy like I said pretty sure Blair’s whack job fans are exactly why asylums need to make a comeback and the funny thing is every Serena fan that I’ve seen doesn’t excuse Serena’s flaws or bad things she does in the show unlike the braindead Blair twerps who excuse Blair being an awful person but act like the people who rightfully don’t put up with Blair being an awful person are somehow the villains like Blair twerps legit scare me with how insane and psychotic they are

On that note, can you imagine how INSANE the media circus would be if it did come out publicly that Chuck and Blair illegally backdated their marriage certificate and the case against them was actually re-opened? Especially in 2023, at a time when anti-billionaire “eat the rich” sentiment has become very mainstream, and true crime is one of the most popular and profitable genres of entertainment?
Like, the events of season six happen so fast that we don’t really get to appreciate just how wild they are from the outside looking in. Imagine if Michael Bloomberg or pre-presidency Donald Trump died in a car crash, and their then-teenage progeny took over their real estate empires. Everyone just gets used to the idea of a little boy real estate mogul, I guess, and a few years pass, and then - surprise! They were faking their death all along!! Yes there was a funeral, yes they were legally declared dead, but who cares! They’re back baby, and ready to go back to being the same shitbags they were before!
Except, a mere handful of months later, they’re dead again - this time having gone careening off the side of one of their company’s most famous buildings (imagine if Donald Trump died falling off of Trump Tower lmaoooo). Did they fake it again? Was it foul play? By the time rumors start to swirl of the alleged involvement of their recently deposed nepotism baby, the cops close the case and rule it an accident. Their heir, still barely an adult, retakes the reigns of leadership - newly married, a detail no one realizes is suspicious because they likely have no idea that the spouse was at the scene of the crime.
Years pass. YouTubers and online conspiracy theorists periodically bring up the case, but the public at large once again more or less accepts the public narrative. Another piece of shit real-estate mogul gets elected president, and the attitude of the general public towards the uber wealthy turns increasingly hostile. Then there’s 2020, and 2021, and 2022, and- And then. “Billionaire boy and family linked to father’s mysterious death after discovery of faked marriage license”.
Even though we, the audience, knows Chuck didn’t actually kill his father, do you think in a world where this was an actual case involving actual public figures anyone would believe that? The coverup is so ridiculously suspicious that the general public almost definitely assumes they really did do the crime.
And consider the players in this case - a terrible billionaire who died a deliciously ironic death, his somehow worse son who in a post-#MeToo world is already a PR nightmare waiting to happen, and the ex-princess of Monaco (?!) who just so happens to already be tabloid fodder. If they get especially unlucky, Dan (a pretty famous novelist, at least according to the reboot), Serena (a 2000s era “it girl” and semi-celebrity), and Nate (an ex-NYC mayoral candidate, media mogul, and in universe Kennedy equivalent) might just find themselves implicated too - or at least forced to testify - given they were at the very much in public wedding where any rando could have snapped a picture.
There is just soooo much fucked up entertainment value in a case like this I can’t imagine it being anything less than a public fucking spectacle, and not the kind Chuck or Blair could just shake off. I genuinely do not know how they could absolve themselves in the court of public opinion if it actually went to trial, even if they managed to prevail legally.
Oh my god. Okay well, first of all, I really want the fake Serial podcast that unpacks all of this lol. Someone should make that lmao.
"little boy real estate mogul" took me out lololololol
also like...faking your death is a crime right??? how was Bart just able to re-enter society so easily??? did they ever say???
i'd also like to point out that it's actually much vaguer whether or not Chuck killed his father. They cut away during their fight and then next thing you see is Bart hanging onto the edge. Chuck himself says that he isn't sure whether or not he pushed him or Bart fell over. but also Chuck and Blair both just stood there and did nothing to help Bart before he fell, which is involuntary manslaughter I believe
But seriously though, you're so right anon that all of this was made for true crime. In 2030, someone makes a "Jinx" style doc about Chuck I bet

Remember that time when Blair sabotaged Jenny's career (and destroyed her property, which I'm pretty sure Jenny could've sued her for), and publicly called her a whore just because she fucked Blair's EX-boyfriend, even Blair herself had lost her virginity to her freshly ex-boyfriend's best friend, fucked said best friend's uncle, and later literally whored herself out to said uncle to help her boyfriend keep his hotel?
And then the fandom called her "QUEEN!" for it? Insane behavior.

idk but what do you think of blairs really intense internalized misogyny? like i remember in S3 pilot Chuck was cheating on her and when she came in Chuck was like, she knew i had a girlfriend so she yelled at the girlfriend and then started making out with Chuck
oh that specific instance you're talking about was some unhealthy consensual "cheating kink" thing that blair and chuck had going on, i remember because when i saw it for the first time i was like "??" i mean, there's nothing wrong with roleplaying infidelity, the problem with the way chuck and blair did it was involving people who don't know that they're part of an RP scene, which is. bad ettiquette & fucked up on various levels.
but yeah, we see blair's internalised misogyny a lot. i think it comes thru especially in how she responds to jenny, esp over the whole "putting jenny into exile because chuck had sex with her" which... chuck more or less isolated jenny from everyone else and arguably took advantage of her, so blaming jenny for chuck in those instances is, to me, the most notable example for b's fucked up internalised misogyny.
i've actually spoken about this a decent amount on this blog before, i have an anti blair waldorf tag that u can go thru! im not, by definition? "anti blair", it's just a filtering/categorising thing.

After seeing some of @hydesjackiespuddinpop 's posts and having a chat with them, I realized that there is a pattern in fandoms where people tend to prefer the "bitchy" friend over the more down-to-earth "normal" friend. It is everywhere, all over teen shows especially. Rory and Paris, Serena and Blair, Summer and Marissa, Donna and Jackie... (Maddy and Cassie from Euphoria almost fall into this category but not quite because Maddy actually never did anything as bad to Cassie as she did to her.)
But the thing is that if you met these people in real life, you would run the opposite direction. Who would you prefer to be your boss- someone who refers to you as a number because she can't even be bothered learning your name, criticizes anything you do because nothing is ever good enough and overall creates a hostile and toxic atmosphere, or someone nice, friendly and down to earth?
Who would you rather be friends with- someone who looks down on you because you're not from the same social class and wants to make you her minion (aka slave) or someone who doesn't look at money and class and is nice to everyone?
Would you rather hang out with someone who constantly criticizes your looks and bosses you around or someone chill and down-to-earth?
Yes, I know these characters are entertaining and it's fun to watch them "drag" and "own" people but come on. And I know that if someone is generally a bad person, it stands out when they do something good once in a while, so that's why people tend to remember their good deeds more than of someone who is generally a good person. But still, acknowledge that in real life you wouldn't want to come anywhere near them. And while yes, Rory, Serena, Marissa and Donna made mistakes, they always tried to be good people instead of being just straight up mean.
