Dec 26 Aberdeen Art Gallery Visit. Amongst the collection in the gallery. I discovered a few of my favourite artist including Ken Currie
A short statement about the artists work and set of questions about the artists work for the viewer. I would say aimed at younger viewers. To help ask some interesting questions to provoke thinking and discussion. I can see it’s an excellent way get people to engage in the work through discussions.
Adopt an Artwork
The other item is an Adopt an Artwork plaque. This allows an artist to help the gallery financially by making a fixed amount donation of £100 - £200. This helps support the gallery cost in maintaining the art works condition while in the galleries care .
The benefits of an work adopter will have their name in the gallery stating they have adopted the work. This could be good for promoting yourself within the gallery art community and wider public.
Harbour Arts Centre. Irvine .
I made a visit to the HAC harbour arts centre at the weekend to go and collect information on exhibiting work.
They have a one year waiting list for exhibition if you want to show your work.
Requirements are that you send in a portfolio of your work with a description of the artwork size and type you want to exhibit. Unfortunately the gallery was empty of work. As they are setting up for a new exhibition. I am planning to go that exhibition over the next few days. It is a joint exhibition by two artist. Having a shared exhibition can help with costs.
Harbour Arts Centre Exhibition
Tumblr media
I went to the Exhibition at the HAC, the work was all individualy spot lit each wall is composed of the atists work a writtern statement about the artists was on display. The structure of the written statement have to cover key elememts on the artists. i thought it may be helpful to break these down in to the key elements and translate these into my own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ist Draft of Artist Statement for professional use only not for the College Exhibition.
I have engaged in creativity from boyhood having always been my most content when making art. I developed drawn work and painting. My drive to become a working artist led me to degree study in Contemporary Art at Glasgow City Colege as a mature student. I developed conceptual thinking and use in different media developong an interest in 3D instalation and further develope my skills in 2D work. I enjoy painting on textural surfaces often aplying recyled textural materials such as ridged cardboard and wrinkled masking tape or mod rock that enchane a feel of movement in my painting. My recent instalations have explored the meaning of self and our interconectivity to one another. I am driven to produce work that shows a juxtaposition from mass media naratives that cause negitivity. Or simply just to express the beauty of what he sees in life and nature.
My Social media Profoile. I have created an instagram for my art work promotion and am following some interesting artist. I am not very farmiliar with instagram. I do not like the interface of the app. I will keep going with it until i have worked it out, no doubt enjoy promoting myself as an artist on it when Im more comfortable using it. I do have an artist profile that I have had on facebook since 2018. I share my work with the public group. Members share their work to the group also. Criteria I have for the group are no adult content the group is for all ages work must be origonal, No bad language and no mass produces junk being promoted on my group. I have removed people from the group for sharing commercial posts selling factory made junk. It is important that my art and others should be origonal inclusive and suitable for public spaces.
WASP Court Yard Studio Irvine Harbourside Ayrshire
I made a visit to the WASP studios at irvine harbour my home town. I introuduced myself to David Reid a resident artist who is an exhibition artist he holds painting classes from his WASP location. I asked him how he promotes him self. He said he did have an instagram but he found it was high maintainanance keeping it current took a lot of time.
He said some work comes from exhibitions by way of commisions from the public. He generates income from prints sold at his WASP location and sells them at exhibition. He finds most the people who join his classes are found via word of mouth. I relate to this as i was self emploid for 20 years running my own grounds maintainance company, most work comes from work being seen and through word of mouth. These elements of promotion should not be ignored. It is always good to have your work on hand in your phone to show to potential customers or clients. This is why I think having an organised digital portfolio is vital.
I have noticed that artist statements including social media bio's are written in second person. This may be a advertising strategy that attempts to appear the artist is being discussed by someone else reviewing them. Rather than the artist discussing themself. Is that a good aproach? I tend to think it isn't. I will get advice from lecturerers. In the mean time I have had a go at a first draft which no doubt will require improvement. I have tried to keep the word count low as i know viewers generally don't want to read a huge ammount of informatuon.
Creative Scotland
The link below gives information on how to apply for Creative Scotland funding. Including group initiatives, individual artist and project funding. I cant see a link to an application form. I belive I would need to contact them on the contact us option on their site. Although a lot of information is on the site to consider already. I have also added a video below which talks about the aplication form. Creative Scotland's Open Project Grant Explained.

Jody kelly
Looking at how the work has been palaced on galley walls I noticed how work like the four below have been placed with similar colour and tone and alternating size. The gallery is a narrow gallery that goes round cornes into different areas. This makes it a nice walk through the work in sections where types of work can be divided to compliment each other .
His facebook, instagram and website all have montages of his work. Having the same montage on his digital profiles becomes a signature image of his presence online.
News Articles of his work painting Murals on Glasgows Clutha Bars site. The council helped with the funding for the boards surrounding the site. He talks about the concept and realtionship with location and the characters in his works relevence.
His facebook page also has time laps videos of his paintings.
Images of him working on outdoor murals giving his audiance a feel of what he dose.
His page has announcements on where he is exhibiting and selling his art and prints and events.
His instagram page has moving annimations with music of his art this is very cool and engaging with contemporary music.
links to his other social media sites are shown on his instagram.
He has a You Tube channle that is promoted via his socila media pages.
You can also find an article in the Glasgow Herrald talking about the project which was organised by artpistol who are involved in both interior design art in commercial public and private buildings as well as a large portfolio of murals in public spaces. I am excited by their work.
I will be contacting them via Emial to ask how i may become involved and will add any progress on this to my blog. I think one of the most important things to do is to begin to organise a portfoilio ASAP this will give me a structured framework from which to present myself as an artist.

Generating Extra Income
Atist Wendy Crieg
As part of her promotional strategy and to generate income as an artist she sells prints of her work as well as her origonal pecies in the gallery. This is something I will look into I have already had high quality colour images printed by Brown Bro's Printers locally. The method used was to send a PDF of image with specifications on size and quantity.
I will have to enquire about framing and print cotsts before i consider pricing of different sizes. Then compare them to other printers before making a decisoin .
Wendy Crieg and Jody kelly are both members of Troon Art Club, Engagement with goups and collectives like this are a fantastic way to network, become involved in group projects such as exhibition.
She has also did a video for TV Ayrshire on her exhibition talking about how she became involved in Troon Art club and subsiquently became involved in exhibitions . She has a social media presence and online articles about he work similarly to Jody kelly's profile
I plan to do is use my youtube chanle to 'promote my work.
Ken Curry
Is very sucsessful Scottish artist he is very well established who exhibits his work the most prestigiouse galleries. He has an excilent online and public profile within the creative industries. including the Natuonal Portrait Gallery. Flowers Gallery London, Aberdeen Art gallery, Kelvingrove Art Galery and the GOMA and internationaly.
His presence on line is excilent, he has a very good instagtram profile on Flowers Gallery page. Show casing his work exhibitions. He shares his thinking behind his work on Reels that helps to give viewers and audiances an understanding of his work. He talks about his feelings that inspire him to express his thoughts. The vidoes helps to put artist persona and concepts into context. His profile can also be found on Glasgow print studios website he sells his work at the GIS location 103 Torngate. We made a visit to the print studio on our gallery visit day where a range of his large scale prints are for sale. what i liked about how his prints are presented is that they are accessable to the public you can go through them at your lesiure. The First point of contact with the work is welcomimg in a well lit locastion.
Making my work welcomoing to potential buyers is something I am considering the location and feel of my point of sale. that should feel welcoming and genuine through out all my platforms and sales points.
Making a short reel to promote my work is something I am going to definetly do. i am also going to do a sketchbook video to add to my socila media. instagram, facebook, and Youtube protfioles.
This is also something i will use when aplying for work in the cresative industries as part of my portfile. I feel this is a good way to give insight into yourself as an artist. I will also add links to some of my writtren work about art that has been created by myself. This will show that i am an artist who usese propper process and can research well and create art that is relatable to theory and practice and will give potential funders and sources of work an insight and confiodence to invest in me as a serious artist. I intend to make a careeer from my artwork.

A Waiting Game
Summary: Carrington Price was a small-town girl with a big dream. She just didn’t think it could become real life.
Pairing: Chris Evans / Original Character
Word Count: 3.5k
Author’s Note: Short smut scene. If you’re interested in becoming part of the taglist, comment of message me. :)
Chapter Two
Chapter Three
“Attention passengers. We are now descending into Glasgow International Airport. The time is now 5:38. It is partly cloudy and six degrees. Enjoy the rest of your Wednesday.”
Carrington turns the airplane mode off on her phone and immediately checks her weather app. 43°F. Not that bad. About the same as home. She sends a text to Cooper to let him know she made it.
Stepping outside, the air is wet. A slight drizzle falls from the sky. While in baggage claim, she decides to text Chris.
Carrington: I landed.
The ease of the airport surprises her. No problems with her passport. No problem with her work visa. No lost bags. A cab pulls up to the door as she goes back outside.
“Hi.” The woman says as Carrington gets in.
“Hi. Here’s the address.” Carrington hands the woman a piece of paper from her wallet.
Her phone vibrates.
Chris: I’m glad you made it
Carrington: I just realized I forgot to exchange my money.
Chris: I can cover it
She rolls her eyes and looks out the window.
“So where is it that you’re going?”
“I’m an intern on a film. They’re shooting her for the next two weeks I believe.”
“Gotcha.”
Chris: When will you be here? I can meet you at the gate.
“How long will it take to get there?” She asks.
“Traffic isn’t bad. Maybe 20 minutes.”
Carrington texts Chris back and goes back to the window. The sun is hidden behind a cloud and she could see the city in the distance. Her eyes kept falling from her sleepless flight. Before she knows it, the car parks and rain is falling from the sky.
“It’s gonna be 25.” The driver says looking at Carrington in the rearview mirror.
Carrington looks up through the front window and sees Chris’s figure standing by the gate, an umbrella in his hand.
“Give me just a second. I have to go get the money from him.”
She runs out of the car and into the rain. She ducks her head under the umbrella.
“Hello.” Chris smiles.
“It’s 25.”
He hands the umbrella to Carrington and gets his wallet out of his back pocket.
“Here’s 30.”
Carrington runs back to the car and the woman rolls the window down.
“Is that your boyfriend?” She asks, taking the money.
“Um.” She looks back at Chris, “Kind of.”
The trunk of the car opens and Carrington quickly grabs her bag. As she makes her way back to the gate, it opens. Her and Chris walk through and he covers her head with the umbrella again.
“How was your flight?” He asks and pulls her body into his.
“I didn’t get any sleep. Listened to a lot of music and got some journaling done.”
“I made dinner for you.”
Carrington looks up at Chris and smiles.
“Thank you.”
“We can drop off your bag at your trailer and then we can come back to mine.”
“That sounds great. But I’m not staying over.”
When they make it back to Chris’s trailer, dinner is sitting on the table. There’s a platter with grilled chicken and veggies.
“Oh, so you’re a health nut.” Carrington jokes sitting at the table.
“It takes hard work to keep up a body like this.”
“Wow. You are such a dick.” She laughs.
Chris stands at the edge of the table and serves them both. He then leans down closer to Carrington.
“Can I help you?” She asks.
“Give me a kiss.” He smiles.
She smiles back and reaches up towards him. His hand reaches the back of her neck and pulls her closer to him. The connection between them brings the familiar heat to each other’s lips. Carrington pulls away first.
“Can we please eat first?” She asks, her hand holding onto his forearm.
“Of course, we can.”
Chris sits down across from her and smiles. They begin having casual conversation, talking about the next few weeks of filming and travel. The minutes turn to hours as their familiar chemistry develops once again. Carrington feels her eyes start to become heavy.
“Do you want to stay here?” Chris asks.
“I shouldn’t but I will.”
He gets up and takes their plates to put them in the sink.
“And why not?”
“I’ve already invaded your space enough.” She sighs, also getting up from the table.
Chris walks up to her and puts a hand on her waist.
“I want you here. I promise.”
Carrington steps up to him and rests her head on his chest. He kisses the top of her head and rubs his fingers along the small of her back. He eventually takes his hands away from her.
“Come with me, the beds back here.”
As Carrington follows behind, she admires Chris’s figure. His broad shoulder, his nice legs, that tiny little ass. She chuckles and Chris turns to look at her.
“What do want to sleep in?” He asks as he begins to remove his shoes.
“Just a t-shirt is fine.”
Chris bends over to get into a drawer and then throws her a shirt. She picks it up and throws it back at him.
“That’s not gonna work.”
“Why not?” He asks, scrunching his eyebrows.
“Chris. That’s a Pats shirt. I’m from Indy.”
“Oh. Well. Get over yourself.” He gives her smile.
Carrington begins to undress, leaving only her underwear on.
“You could just sleep like that.” Chris says.
“Will you please just give me a different shirt?”
He grins and tosses her another one. She puts it over her head, the hem hitting her just above the thigh. Carrington sits down on to the bed and watches Chris as he undresses. The hair on his chest seemed a little thicker than the last time she saw him. His boxers seemed just tight enough, but still comfortable. He puts on a pair of thin, plaid pajama pants and then to put on a shirt.
“Could you, um, leave the shirt off?” She asks, “Your skin is so warm.”
Chris gives a smirk and puts the shirt back into a drawer. As he reaches to pull back the covers, Carrington gets off the bed to pull them back on her side. They both get into the bed and find a comfortable spot. After a few minutes of silence, Chris reaches over and turns off the lamp.
“Okay get over here.” Chris says.
Carrington feels the fabric of the sheet move as Chris moves his arm. She scoots over to nuzzle herself into his side. She places her head on his shoulder and a hand on his chest. Chris wraps his arm around her and rubs his thumb on her arm.
“I’m glad you’re here.” He whispers.
Carrington smiles and begins running her finger tips across his chest.
“So am I.”
----
Carrington wakes up and immediately feels the jet lag. She slowly gets out of bed, trying not to wake Chris. She leaves Chris’s shirt on and slides her pants on from the day before. She leaves the trailer and quietly shuts the door behind her.
As she walks to her trailer, she checks her phone. A few texts from Cooper, weather is cloudy and 39 degrees Fahrenheit. Time, 06:48. With all the time before filming, she decides to go for a run.
She puts on leggings and an Army hoodie with her hair in a high ponytail. Stepping out of her trailer, she sees the sun rising in the distance. She does a few stretches before putting in her earbuds and taking off on a jog.
Carrington pushes play and her running playlist begins. In Atlanta, she hadn’t had the time to go on a run. But this felt much needed. As she turned the corner of the lot, she saw the sun rising in the distance. Carrington picks up her pace as the tempo increases in the song. She goes around the large building and then heads back to the trailers.
Before going to her own trailer, she decides to go back to see Chris. She quietly opens the door and shuts it behind her. As she makes her way back to the bedroom, she hears the shower running. Carrington goes up to the small bathroom and quickly opens up the door.
“What the fuck!” Chris exclaims.
Carrington hunches over laughing.
“Are you serious?” Chris chuckles.
“You should have seen your face.” Carrington says through her laughter.
“There is soap, in my eye.”
Chris puts his face into the spraying water. While he does this, Carrington begins to undress and then gets into the small shower with him. She runs her hands down his back and wraps her arms around his waist.
“Well hello there.”
Chris turns around and Carrington looks up at him.
“Let’s go on a date.” He says to her.
Carrington sighs and moves her way under the water. She turns around to face him while she gets her hair wet.
“No.” She says flatly.
“Why not?” Chris asks, his hands tracing the outline of her body.
Carrington begins to wash her hair and trades places with Chris again.
“Jennifer practically threatened my internship. Plus, you haven’t exactly said what’s happening between you and Jenny.” She turns back around to rinse out her hair.
“Carrington. Hey look at me.”
“What Chris?”
The tension between them is thick. Their eyes don’t leave each other.
“Jenny and I are no longer together.”
"And you’re not going to get back together again?”
“Right now, I’m focused on you and only you.”
Carrington quickly finished showering and got out to dry off. By the time she had gotten dressed, Chris was out of the shower too.
“So why did you have a date with Jenny before you came here?” Carrington asks him once he comes around the corner.
“How do you know about that?” He asks and sits next to her on the bed.
“Jesus, I sound like a psycho.” Carrington lays back on the bed.
Chris lays back next to her. They turn their heads and face each other.
“We met up to officially call it quits. And you aren’t a psycho. You’re just taking precautions.”
Carrington checks the time on her phone.
“I’m gonna go back to my trailer. I’ll see you at the set meeting.”
----
“Now that was a waste of time.”
Carrington looks up from her notebook. Anthony Mackie stands next to her.
“How is it right for them to make up get up early and then say we’re gonna night film.”
“Didn’t you read the script beforehand?” Carrington asks.
“You did?” He asks.
“I couldn’t sleep on the flight over. Figured I’d be ahead of the game.”
“I’m Anthony by the way.”
“Yeah, I’m aware.” Carrington chuckles and puts a hand out. “I’m Carrington, the production intern.”
“Oh, you’re Chris’s girl. I saw you running this morning.”
Around this time, Chris notices Carrington after searching for her the entire meeting. He feels his heart clinch as he sees Carrington’s smile as she talks to Mackie. Chris makes his was across the room towards them.
“I’m not his girl.” She smirks.
“Oh, so then why did you stay in his trailer if you have your own?” He questions and crosses his arm.
“Mackie, don’t mess with her.” Chris says, putting a hand on Anthony’s shoulder.
“Evans. Mind your business.” She says.
Chris gives her a smug look. Anthony chuckles.
“I like her. She’s good.” Mackie says, slapping Chris’s shoulder. “Chris, you wanna come lift today.”
“I will.” Carrington says.
“You lift?” Anthony chuckles.
“Trust me she lifts.” Chris says.
Carrington and Anthony both look at Chris and then at each other. She then begins to walk away back to the trailer.
“Carrington wait up.” Chris says running after her.
“What Chris?” She stops.
“I didn’t mean for that to sound how it did.”
“It’s fine.” Carrington begins walking again.
Chris picks up his pace and walks beside her.
“Just one date. That’s all I’m asking.”
“I’m not losing this opportunity just for some guy.”
“Do you really think I’m just some guy?” He says, just loud enough for her to hear.
She stops and turns to look at him. His hands now in his pockets. Carrington sighs. She takes her hand and moves a piece of hair from his eye line.
“One date. Make it count.”
----
Carrington is woken up by a hard knocking at the door. She quickly gets off the couch and runs through her trailer. She opens the door and there stands Anthony Mackie.
“Are you stalking me?” She asks, squinting at the bright sky.
“No,” he chuckles. “I was coming to see if you wanted to come lift.”
“Oh. Yes. Right now?”
Mackie nods.
“You can come inside. I’ll be just a sec.”
He slowly follows her into the small trailer. Carrington goes back to the bedroom and shuts the door behind her. While she digs through her bag to find clothes, Anthony sits on the couch and texts Chris.
Anthony: With your girl, meet us at the gym.
Carrington comes out of the bedroom. She now wears an Army long sleeve shirt and a pair of green sweatpants. In her hand is a pair of Nikes and sits on the couch to put them on.
“Were you in the military?” Anthony asks me.
“Oh, no. Uh, my dad was in Vietnam.”
“So, he was really old when your parents had you?” He jokes.
The pair gets up and start to leave.
“Not really old, but yes older.” She chuckles
Carrington follows beside Anthony as they walk in between trailers. There’s what appears to be a garage behind a building that Carrington remembers seeing earlier in the morning.
“I told Chris we were headed over here. But he hasn’t responded.”
They walk into the building through a door on the side and Anthony switches on the lights. The floor is covered in black matting and the walls are painted a dull grey. It looks like any other home gym, but much more expensive. Carrington walks over to the garage door and pushes a button to open it.
“Do you want to control the music?” Anthony asks from the stereo set up.
“Anything from the 70s is what I typically listen to. Mostly classic rock.”
“I can work with that.”
Carrington connects her phone to the speaker and shuffles her playlist from the morning. As she is hidden behind the wall, she slips off her sweats and reveals spandex shorts. The song plays loudly through the speakers and Carrington begins stretching.
Chris is now walking towards the gym and the sun begins to shine. As he gets closer, he sees Carrington walking up to the squat rack. She ducks underneath the bar and keeps her head down as she adjusts her shoulders and hands. Chris leans against the doorway and nods at Mackie.
Carrington quickly flips her head back and her hair falls over the bar. Chris admires how her body quickly moves and gracefully lifts the weight down and back up again. She does this a few more times and then reracks the bar.
Chris walks over to her and puts a hand on her shoulder. Before he can say anything, Carrington quickly turns around and pokes a finger into Chris’s chest.
“I'm like evil, I get under your skin, just like a bomb that's ready to blow.” She sings along to the song with a grin on her face.
“Hi.” Chris chuckles.
Carrington places a kiss on his cheek and then moves around him. She goes to one side of the squat rack and begins to change the weights. Chris goes to the opposite side and changes them to match. He takes a step back and Carrington walks over to his side.
“What is that 150?”
“165. Did you graduate high school?” She looks up at him.
“You can lift that?” He asks.
“I’ve done 200 before.”
Chris takes a step back and looks at her through squinted eyes.
“What?” Carrington chuckles, and reaches up to tighten her ponytail.
“I’m just trying to figure out where that tiny body of yours gets all that power.”
Carrington walks back under the bar and gets in place again. Carrington unracks the bar and begins with her lift. Anthony walks up to Chris.
“Does she need a spot?” Anthony asks.
Carrington does about three more reps gracefully before reracking.
“I think that’s a no.” Chris replies.
“Come on Chris. Show me what you got.” Carrington smiles.
“Well let’s move it to like the basic 135.”
Carrington rolls her eyes and walks away from the squat rack. Chris and Anthony switch around the plates. The music changes from rock to rap quickly. The men quickly turn their heads to where Carrington is by the speaker.
“Okay where did that come from?” Mackie asks.
“I listen to certain music when I lift and run and different music when I do petty shit.”
Carrington walks across the room to where the dumbbells and kettlebells are sitting.
“What’s petty shit?” Chris asks, as he starts to stretch.
“Watching you lift a small amount while I do kettlebell swings.”
“You can quit it with the sass.”
Chris walks over to Carrington. She folds her arms and Chris does the same. Carrington takes a step closer to him and looks up at him.
“Make me.” She says.
Chris swiftly wraps his arms around her and squeezes her tightly. Carrington begins laughing.
“Watch me.” He says.
Carrington quickly stops squirming and laughing. She looks up at Chris with wanting eyes.
“Later.” Carrington says and falls out of Chris’s arms.
Chris and Carrington only stay for about another hour before the tension between them becomes too thick. They quickly walk back to the trailers together. Chris holding Carrington’s shoes, while she holds her sweats.
“So your place or mine?” Carrington asks.
“Mine is closer.”
“Perfect.”
When they make it to the trailer, Chris opens up the door and Carrington swiftly walks up the steps. Carrington puts her sweats on the couch and the shoes get placed on the counter.
“Did you lock the door?” Carrington asks walking up to Chris.
“Yes sweetheart .”
Carrington takes Chris’s hands and places them on her waist. Their lips meet and they melt into each. After only a few kisses, Chris moves his hands down Carrington’s body. His hands follow the curve of her rear just to the top of her thighs. He swiftly picks her up and Carrington wraps her legs around Chris’s waist. Chris walks them to the bedroom as Carrington begins to kiss his neck.
“How much time do we have before you have to get ready for shooting?” She asks.
Chris grabs out of his sweatpants and checks the time. A big smile crosses his face.
“I’ve got all kinds of time for you baby.” He whispers as he sits her down on the bed. “Arms up.”
She raised her arms up and Chris takes her shirt off for her. This leaves her in a gray sports bra. Carrington’s body falls back onto the bed and she scoots back. Chris positions himself in between Carrington’s legs. He begins by kissing her shoulder and then working his way down the middle of her chest.
The feeling of his beard sends a shiver through her body. As his lips reach her stomach, Chris pulls away. He grabs onto the top of her shorts and pulls them down off of her.
“Carr?”
She sits up on her elbows and looks down at him.
“You have the most beautiful body.”
The comment makes her blush. Chris begins kissing her thighs making his way to where she wants them the most. Before he gets there, he pulls up and brings his lips to hers.
“Chris...” She whines.
“Yes babe?”
“Fuck me please.”
“Only because you asked nicely.”
Chris stand up and quickly takes his pants off including his boxers. As Carrington watches his dick come free she sighs. She was addicted to him and it left an ache in her chest everyday she wasn’t with him. Chris lays back down in between her legs. He put the tips of two fingers into his mouth and then places them on Carrington’s entrance.
“You’re always ready for me aren’t you.” Chris smirks.
“Yes sir.”
The simple word makes Chris groan and he quickly enters Carrington. It had only been a week since they’d had the time to be with each other but they could both tell that it had felt like much longer. Chris picked up pace and Carrington buries her head into the curve of his neck.
“As much as I want to make this last, it’s just been so long baby.” Chris whispers.
“It’s okay Chris. I’m close.”
Within a minute they’re both panting and coming unhinged. Chris lays down next to Carrington and moves his arm so that she can lay on his chest.
“How’s your plotting for our date going?” She asks.
She takes her fingers and begins running them along his faint ab muscles.
“I think I want to wait til we’re back in the states. I know better places there. That is, if that’s alright with you?”
“I’m fine with whatever.” She smiles.
“What’s your place to eat?”
“Cheesecake Factory.”
Chris chuckles.
“Sorry was that a little too fast.”
“No. It was perfect.”
“You are such a romantic.” Carrington says and looks up at him.
“Just you wait. I’m gonna spoil you so much sweetheart.”

File types refresher:
File type
RAW
+ The best quality image file is captured
+ Extensive options in post-processing and image manipulation
- Time needed to convert and edit photos
- Bigger file sizes mean more storage needed and longer post-processing times
JPEG
+ Small file size so good for social media and emailing
+ Universal format that doesn’t need proprietary software
- Loss of quality due to image compression
- Less opportunity for image manipulation in photo editing software
TIFF
+ Ability to manipulate photos extensively in photo editing software
+ Option to print at the highest quality and at much larger sizes
- Much bigger file sizes (more storage needed)
- Longer transfer and loading times due to file size
GIF
+ Small file sizes makes these ideal for use on the web
+ Files can contain animation
- Limited colours means it is not the best choice for photos
- Does not support partial transparency like drop shadows
ADOBE PDF
+ PDF can be opened on any device with any operating system in exactly the same form in which it was created
- It’s not free to edit PDF files
- It’s easier to edit files in other formants than in PDF, because PDF files must be edited in specialised programs
Choose another that you might use
DNG
+ Ability to use image processing software such as Lightroom and Photoshop
+ Possibly guard against inability to open or access files in future
- Extra time needed to convert camera raw files to DNG (if your camera does not have the option to supply files in this format)
Choose another that you might use
PNG
+ Lossless compression means good image quality
+ The ability to maintain transparency
- Quality will not be good enough for printing at any size
RAW workflow: In photoshop.
Add an appropriate diagram from the web.

Explain the need to develop a good digital workflow.
Why workflow matters
Photography workflow is the sequence of steps and actions you take to edit your photos, work them up to a result you consider finished, and share them with the world. Editing photos can be like baking a cake or assembling flat pack furniture. You start with raw ingredients, or loose parts, and use an ordered sequence of steps to put the thing together. In a good photography workflow, the end result is a perfectly crafted image, securely stored for future use, all with the least possible effort.
Efficiency is important. Without a good workflow, at minimum you’re wasting time. Worse, you run the very real risk of losing your most precious photos. Forever. A couple of years ago I knew a wedding photographer, then aspiring to become professional, who lost an entire wedding shoot because of relatively simple errors in her workflow. (In short, the mistakes derived from a convoluted importing method and totally inadequate backups.)
Maybe you’re only taking pictures for fun? If you’re planning to continue with photography, you still need to use an effective workflow. If you don’t, your photo archive will become a beast, very difficult to tame. And your images won’t look as good as they could. No fun.
When you’re starting out in digital photography, you need to develop good habits early.

1/ What software did you use to optimise/ name/ select these? Where did you store them?
File management
Name Three places where you will store your images.
1
Memory Card/USB Drive
+ Small and portable.
+ Easily share files documents with other devices.
+ Simple to operate.
+ Cheap to buy.
- Easily infected with viruses or malware.
- Easy for users to lose or break them.
2
Computer HD
+ Fairly affordable and easy to use.
+ Higher capacities than those available with small USB drives.
- This type of physical storage doesn’t last forever.
- Don’t usually come with password protection or advanced security features.
3
Cloud Based Back-up
+ Your data to be accessible from anywhere.
+ Allow clients to view select files through cloud sharing platforms.
+ Off-site storage so useful in disaster recovery.
- Security is a major concern for businesses using cloud storage solutions.
- Possibility of remote failure of server.
- Can be expensive.
Name File management software.
1/        Adobe Bridge CC
2/        CyberLink PhotoDirector 10
3/        Magix Photo Manager Deluxe
Explain the need for good clear file management.
Good file management is important to allow you to quickly and easily locate images.
1. Everything is easier to find
2. See how you’ve progressed
3. You’re forced to review the good with the bad
4. It will teach you to avoid recurring mistakes
5. Discover ideas you want to revisit
6. Find themes and begin developing a vision

How straight forward was it to make this in your selected software?
Quite straightforward, I selected the shots I wanted in Bridge’s “Output” tab, selected the number and size of images I wanted on a sheet and exported them as a PDF file.
Explain two methods of Black and white conversion from an RGB original.
From Bridge, an image can be opened in Camera RAW and converted by selecting the “B&W” option in the top right-hand side.
In Photoshop, a new “Black & White” adjustment layer can be selected.

Evaluate how the edits have changed/ enhanced the feel of the image.
For these shots, I first corrected the image in the “Optics” tab of Camera RAW to correct any chromatic aberrations. Next, I converted to B&W and checked the exposure and colour temperature. I then added a small amount of clarity and adjusted the contrast, shadows, whites and blacks. Next, I opened them in Photoshop and cropped them a small amount.
I think all the edits have worked well and by making the adjustments described above, I feel I have met the brief by providing more high contrast “gritty” and engaging images of Glasgow’s people.
People make Glasgow finished canvas, make a selection of your best images and display on one A3 300 ppi canvas.
Tumblr media
How do you feel about your final series of images?
I think the final series of images work together well to give a flavour of the different characters that make up Glasgow’s people.

Use your Alphabet Challenge project to describe the stages in the workflow from Capture to Output
Capture
Using my Canon EOS 750D I walked around the streets of Glasgow searching for objects, shapes and shadows that closely resemble every letter in the English alphabet and taking images of them.
Import
After all shots have been captured, I remove the SanDisk Ultra 32GB SD card from the camera and insert it directly into the laptop. Once I’ve created a new folder for the images on the laptop, I cut and paste the raw files to the hard drive.
Edit
Using Adobe Lightroom, I imported all the images to select which pictures were suitable and removed the rest.
Optimise
Once the final images have been selected, they are optimised further in Lightroom in the Develop section. Here I cropped, re-angled the images then made more creative changes such as making them all black and white, playing with the contrast, highland and shadows to make the subject standout more.
Export
Following the editing and optimising process I exported all the final images to a sub folder on the hard drive.
Output
Before I could finally upload the images onto Tumblr I had to organise them into a collage for a neater display. For this stage I first had to upload them all onto my Google Drive page, then download them from there onto my phone where I could use an app called InCollage. Once the collages were made, they were then finally uploaded to Tumblr for submission.
What software did you use?
Windows 10 and Adobe Lightroom
Was this good workflow?
It worked well enough at the time. A few screws could be tightened here n there.
What could be done better next time?
As I didn’t know how to create a collage on my laptop, the only device that could make a quick collage being my smart phone. This process of transferring photos from device to device was a bit time consuming. And due to the collage app on my phone, the resulting images’ quality and resolution did suffer. Next time I shall try create interesting collages on the laptop to preserve image quality and quicken the process.

Mickey Rooney (born Ninnian Joseph Yule Jr.; September 23, 1920 – April 6, 2014) was an American actor, vaudevillian, comedian, producer and radio personality. In a career spanning nine decades and continuing until shortly before his death, he appeared in more than 300 films and was among the last surviving stars of the silent-film era.
At the height of a career that was marked by declines and comebacks, Rooney performed the role of Andy Hardy in a series of 16 films in the 1930's and 1940's that epitomized American family values. A versatile performer, he became a celebrated character actor later in his career. Laurence Olivier once said he considered Rooney "the best there has ever been". Clarence Brown, who directed him in two of his earliest dramatic roles, National Velvet and The Human Comedy, said he was "the closest thing to a genius I ever worked with".
Rooney first performed in vaudeville as a child and made his film debut at the age of six. At 14, he played Puck in the play and later the 1935 film adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Critic David Thomson hailed his performance as "one of the cinema's most arresting pieces of magic". In 1938, he co-starred in Boys Town. At 18, he was the first teenager to be nominated for an Oscar for his leading role in Babes in Arms, and he was awarded a special Academy Juvenile Award in 1939.[4] At the peak of his career between the ages of 15 and 25, he made 43 films, which made him one of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's most consistently successful actors and a favorite of MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer.
Rooney was the top box-office attraction from 1939 to 1941 and one of the best-paid actors of that era, but his career would never again rise to such heights. Drafted into the Army during World War II, he served nearly two years entertaining over two million troops on stage and radio and was awarded a Bronze Star for performing in combat zones. Returning from the war in 1945, he was too old for juvenile roles but too short to be an adult movie star, and was unable to get as many starring roles although there are numerous inexpensively made but critically well-received films noir with Rooney playing the lead during the post-war period and 1950s. Nevertheless, Rooney's popularity was renewed with well-received supporting roles in films such as Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) with Audrey Hepburn, Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962) with Anthony Quinn and Jackie Gleason, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), and The Black Stallion (1979). In the early 1980s, he returned to Broadway in Sugar Babies and again became a celebrated star. Rooney made hundreds of appearances on TV, including dramas, variety programs, and talk shows, and won an Emmy in 1982 plus a Golden Globe for his role in Bill (1981).
Rooney was born Ninnian Joseph Yule Jr. on September 23, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of vaudevillians Nellie W. Carter, from Kansas City, Missouri and Joe Yule, a native of Glasgow, Scotland. His mother was a former chorus girl and a burlesque performer. When Rooney was born, his parents were appearing in a Brooklyn production of A Gaiety Girl. Rooney later recounted in his memoirs that he began performing at the age of 17 months as part of his parents' routine, wearing a specially tailored tuxedo.
Rooney's parents separated when he was four years old in 1924, and he and his mother moved to Hollywood the following year from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. He made his first film appearance at age six in 1926, in the short Not to be Trusted. Rooney got bit parts in films such as The Beast of the City (1932) and The Life of Jimmy Dolan (1933), which allowed him to work alongside stars such as Joel McCrea, Colleen Moore, Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Wayne and Jean Harlow. He enrolled in the Hollywood Professional School and later attended Hollywood High School, graduating in 1938.
His mother saw an advertisement for a child to play the role of "Mickey McGuire" in a series of short films. Rooney got the role and became "Mickey" for 78 of the films, running from 1927 to 1936, starting with Mickey's Circus (1927), his first starring role. During this period, he also briefly voiced Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. He made other films in his adolescence, including several more of the McGuire films. At age 14, he played the role of Puck in the Warner Brothers all-star adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1935. Rooney then moved to MGM, where he befriended Judy Garland, with whom he began making a series of musicals that propelled both of them to stardom.
In 1937, Rooney was selected to portray Andy Hardy in A Family Affair, which MGM had planned as a B-movie.[14] Rooney provided comic relief as the son of Judge James K. Hardy, portrayed by Lionel Barrymore (although former silent film leading man Lewis Stone played the role of Judge Hardy in subsequent pictures). The film was an unexpected success, and led to 13 more Andy Hardy films between 1937 and 1946, and a final film in 1958.
According to author Barry Monush, MGM wanted the Andy Hardy films to appeal to all family members. Rooney's character portrayed a typical "anxious, hyperactive, girl-crazy teenager", and he soon became the unintended main star of the films. Although some critics describe the series of films as "sweet, overly idealized, and pretty much interchangeable," their ultimate success was because they gave viewers a "comforting portrait of small-town America that seemed suited for the times", with Rooney instilling "a lasting image of what every parent wished their teen could be like".
Behind the scenes, however, Rooney was like the "hyperactive girl-crazy teenager" he portrayed on the screen. Wallace Beery, his co-star in Stablemates, described him as a "brat", but a "fine actor". MGM head Louis B. Mayer found it necessary to manage Rooney's public image, explains historian Jane Ellen Wayne:
Mayer naturally tried to keep all his child actors in line, like any father figure. After one such episode, Mickey Rooney replied, "I won't do it. You're asking the impossible." Mayer then grabbed young Rooney by his lapels and said, "Listen to me! I don't care what you do in private. Just don't do it in public. In public, behave. Your fans expect it. You're Andy Hardy! You're the United States! You're the Stars and Stripes. Behave yourself! You're a symbol!" Mickey nodded. "I'll be good, Mr. Mayer. I promise you that." Mayer let go of his lapels, "All right," he said.
Fifty years later, Rooney realized in hindsight that these early confrontations with Mayer were necessary for him to develop into a leading film star: "Everybody butted heads with him, but he listened and you listened. And then you'd come to an agreement you could both live with. ... He visited the sets, he gave people talks ... What he wanted was something that was American, presented in a cosmopolitan manner."
In 1937, Rooney made his first film alongside Judy Garland with Thoroughbreds Don't Cry. Garland and Rooney became close friends as they co-starred in future films and became a successful song-and-dance team. Audiences delighted in seeing the "playful interactions between the two stars showcase a wonderful chemistry".[27] Along with three of the Andy Hardy films, where she portrayed a girl attracted to Andy, they appeared together in a string of successful musicals, including Babes in Arms (1939). During an interview in the 1992 documentary film MGM: When the Lion Roars, Rooney describes their friendship:[28]
Judy and I were so close we could've come from the same womb. We weren't like brothers or sisters but there was no love affair there; there was more than a love affair. It's very, very difficult to explain the depths of our love for each other. It was so special. It was a forever love. Judy, as we speak, has not passed away. She's always with me in every heartbeat of my body.
In 1937, Rooney received top billing as Shockey Carter in Hoosier Schoolboy but his breakthrough-role as a dramatic actor came in 1938's Boys Town opposite Spencer Tracy as Father Flanagan, who runs a home for wayward and homeless boys. Rooney was awarded a special Juvenile Academy Award in 1939, for "significant contribution in bringing to the screen the spirit and personification of youth". Wayne describes one of the "most famous scenes" in the film, where tough young Rooney is playing poker with a cigarette in his mouth, his hat is cocked and his feet are up on the table. "Tracy grabs him by the lapels, throws the cigarette away and pushes him into a chair. 'That's better,' he tells Mickey." Louis B. Mayer said Boys Town was his favorite film during his years at MGM.
The popularity of his films made Rooney the biggest box-office draw in 1939, 1940 and 1941. For their roles in Boys Town, Rooney and Tracy won first and second place in the Motion Picture Herald 1940 National Poll of Exhibitors, based on the box office appeal of 200 players. Boys' Life magazine wrote, "Congratulations to Messrs. Rooney and Tracy! Also to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer we extend a hearty thanks for their very considerable part in this outstanding achievement." Actor Laurence Olivier once called Rooney "the greatest actor of them all".
A major star in the early 1940s, he appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1940, timed to coincide with the release of Young Tom Edison; the cover story began:
Hollywood's No. 1 box office bait in 1939 was not Clark Gable, Errol Flynn or Tyrone Power, but a rope-haired, kazoo-voiced kid with a comic-strip face, who until this week had never appeared in a picture without mugging or overacting it. His name (assumed) was Mickey Rooney, and to a large part of the more articulate U.S. cinema audience, his name was becoming a frequently used synonym for brat.
During his long and illustrious career, Rooney also worked with many of the screen's female stars, including Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet (1944) and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)." With his appearing with Marilyn Monroe in The Fireball (1950) and with Grace Kelly in The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954), Rooney is the only actor ever co-starring with four of the greatest female screen legends ever. Rooney's "bumptiousness and boyish charm" as an actor developed more "smoothness and polish" over the years, writes biographer Scott Eyman. The fact that Rooney fully enjoyed his life as an actor played a large role in those changes:
You weren't going to work, you were going to have fun. It was home, everybody was cohesive; it was family. One year I made nine pictures; I had to go from one set to another. It was like I was on a conveyor belt. You did not read a script and say, "I guess I'll do it." You did it. They had people that knew the kind of stories that were suited to you. It was a conveyor belt that made motion pictures.
Clarence Brown, who directed Rooney in his Oscar-nominated performance in The Human Comedy (1943) and again in National Velvet (1944), enjoyed working with Rooney in films:
Mickey Rooney is the closest thing to a genius that I ever worked with. There was Chaplin, then there was Rooney. The little bastard could do no wrong in my book ... All you had to do with him was rehearse it once.
In June 1944, Rooney was inducted into the United States Army, where he served more than 21 months (until shortly after the end of World War II) entertaining the troops in America and Europe in Special Services. He spent part of the time as a radio personality on the American Forces Network and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for entertaining troops in combat zones. In addition to the Bronze Star Medal, Rooney also received the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal, for his military service.
Rooney's career slumped after his return to civilian life. He was now an adult with a height of only 5 feet 2 inches (1.57 m) and he could no longer play the role of a teenager, but he also lacked the stature of most leading men. He appeared in a number of films, including Words and Music in 1948, which paired him for the last time with Garland on film (he appeared with her on one episode as a guest on The Judy Garland Show). He briefly starred in a CBS radio series, Shorty Bell, in the summer of 1948, and reprised his role as "Andy Hardy", with most of the original cast, in a syndicated radio version of The Hardy Family in 1949 and 1950 (repeated on Mutual during 1952).
In 1949 Variety reported that Rooney had renegotiated his deal with MGM. He agreed to make one film a year for them for five years at $25,000 a movie (his fee until then had been $100,000 but Rooney wanted to enter independent production.) Rooney claimed he was unhappy with the billing MGM gave him for Words and Music.
His first television series, The Mickey Rooney Show, also known as Hey, Mulligan, was created by Blake Edwards with Rooney as his own producer, and appeared on NBC television for 32 episodes between August 28, 1954 and June 4, 1955.[46] In 1951, he made his directorial debut with My True Story, starring Helen Walker.[47] Rooney also starred as a ragingly egomaniacal television comedian, loosely based on Red Buttons, in the live 90-minute television drama The Comedian, in the Playhouse 90 series on the evening of Valentine's Day in 1957, and as himself in a revue called The Musical Revue of 1959 based on the 1929 film The Hollywood Revue of 1929, which was edited into a film in 1960.
In 1958, Rooney joined Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra in hosting an episode of NBC's short-lived Club Oasis comedy and variety show. In 1960, Rooney directed and starred in The Private Lives of Adam and Eve, an ambitious comedy known for its multiple flashbacks and many cameos. In the 1960s, Rooney returned to theatrical entertainment. He still accepted film roles in undistinguished films but occasionally appeared in better works, such as Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962) and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).
He portrayed a Japanese character, Mr. Yunioshi, in the 1961 film version of Truman Capote's novella Breakfast at Tiffany's. His performance was criticized by some in subsequent years as a racist stereotype. Rooney later said that he would not have taken the role if he had known it would offend people.
On December 31, 1961, Rooney appeared on television's What's My Line and mentioned that he had already started enrolling students in the MRSE (Mickey Rooney School of Entertainment). His school venture never came to fruition. This was a period of professional distress for Rooney; as a childhood friend, director Richard Quine put it: "Let's face it. It wasn't all that easy to find roles for a 5-foot-3 man who'd passed the age of Andy Hardy." In 1962, his debts had forced him into filing for bankruptcy.
In 1966, Rooney was working on the film Ambush Bay in the Philippines when his wife Barbara Ann Thomason— a former model and aspiring actress who had won 17 straight beauty contests in Southern California—was found dead in her bed. Her lover, Milos Milos—who was one of Rooney's actor-friends—was found dead beside her. Detectives ruled it a murder-suicide, which was committed with Rooney's own gun.
Francis Ford Coppola had bought the rights to make The Black Stallion (1979), and when casting it, he called Rooney and asked him if he thought he could play a jockey. Rooney replied saying, "Gee, I don't know. I never played a jockey before." He was kidding, he said, since he had played a jockey in at least three past films, including Down the Stretch, Thoroughbreds Don't Cry, and National Velvet. The film garnered excellent reviews and earned $40 million in its first run, which gave Coppola's struggling studio, American Zoetrope, a major boost. It also gave Rooney newfound recognition, along with a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In 1983, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave Rooney their Academy Honorary Award for his lifetime of achievement.
In addition to his movie roles, Rooney made numerous guest-starring roles as a television character actor for nearly six decades, beginning with an episode of Celanese Theatre. The part led to other roles on such television series as Schlitz Playhouse, Playhouse 90, Producers' Showcase, Alcoa Theatre, The Soldiers, Wagon Train, General Electric Theater, Hennesey, The Dick Powell Theatre, Arrest and Trial (1964), Burke's Law (1963), Combat! (1964), The Fugitive, Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre, The Jean Arthur Show (1966), The Name of the Game (1970), Dan August (1970), Night Gallery (1970)
In 1961, he guest-starred in the 13-week James Franciscus adventure–drama CBS television series The Investigators. In 1962, he was cast as himself in the episode "The Top Banana" of the CBS sitcom, Pete and Gladys, starring Harry Morgan and Cara Williams.
In 1963, he entered CBS's The Twilight Zone, giving a one-man performance in the episode "The Last Night of a Jockey" (1963). Also in 1963, in 'The Hunt' for Suspense Theater, he played the sadistic sheriff hunting the young surfer played by James Caan. In 1964, he launched another half-hour sitcom, Mickey. The story line had "Mickey" operating a resort hotel in southern California. His own son Tim Rooney appeared as his character's teenage son on this program, and Emmaline Henry starred as Rooney's wife. The program lasted for 17 episodes.
When Norman Lear was developing All in the Family in 1970, he wanted Rooney for the lead role of Archie Bunker.[66] Rooney turned Lear down; and the role eventually went to Carroll O'Connor.
Rooney garnered a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Special for his role in 1981's Bill. Playing opposite Dennis Quaid, Rooney's character was a mentally handicapped man attempting to live on his own after leaving an institution. His acting quality in the film has been favorably compared to other actors who took on similar roles, including Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Hanks. He reprised his role in 1983's Bill: On His Own, earning an Emmy nomination for the turn.
Rooney did voice acting from time to time. He provided the voice of Santa Claus in four stop-motion animated Christmas TV specials: Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (1970), The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974), Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July (1979) and A Miser Brothers' Christmas (2008). In 1995, he appeared as himself on The Simpsons episode "Radioactive Man".
After starring in one unsuccessful TV series and turning down an offer for a huge TV series, Rooney, now 70, starred in the Family Channel's The Adventures of the Black Stallion, where he reprised his role as Henry Dailey in the film of the same name, eleven years earlier. The series ran for three years and was an international hit.
Rooney appeared in television commercials for Garden State Life Insurance Company in 2002.
A major turning point came in 1979, when Rooney made his Broadway debut in the acclaimed stage play Sugar Babies, a musical revue tribute to the burlesque era costarring former MGM dancing star Ann Miller. Aljean Harmetz noted that "Mr. Rooney fought over every skit and argued over every song and almost always got things done his way. The show opened on Broadway on October 8, 1979, to rave reviews, and this time he did not throw success away. Rooney and Miller performed the show 1,208 times in New York and then toured with it for five years, including eight months in London. Co-star Miller recalls that Rooney "never missed a performance or a chance to ad-lib or read the lines the same way twice, if he even stuck to the script". Biographer Alvin Marill states that "at 59, Mickey Rooney was reincarnated as a baggy-pants comedian—back as a top banana in show biz in his belated Broadway debut."
Following this, he toured as Pseudelous in Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. In the 1990s, he returned to Broadway for the final months of Will Rogers Follies, playing the ghost of Will's father. On television, he starred in the short-lived sitcom, One of the Boys, along with two unfamiliar young stars, Dana Carvey and Nathan Lane, in 1982.
He toured Canada in a dinner theatre production of The Mind with the Naughty Man in the mid-1990s. He played The Wizard in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz with Eartha Kitt at Madison Square Garden. Kitt was later replaced by Jo Anne Worley.
Rooney wrote a memoir titled Life is Too Short, published by Villard Books in 1991. A Library Journal review said that "From title to the last line, 'I'll have a short bier', Rooney's self-deprecating humor powers this book." He wrote a novel about a child star, published in 1994, The Search For Sunny Skies.
Despite the millions of dollars that he earned over the years, such as his $65,000 a week earnings from Sugar Babies, Rooney was plagued by financial problems late in life. His longtime gambling habit caused him to "gamble away his fortune again and again". He declared bankruptcy for the second time in 1996 and described himself as "broke" in 2005. He kept performing on stage and in the movies, but his personal property was valued at only $18,000 when he died in 2014.
Rooney and his wife Jan toured the country in 2005 through 2011 in a musical revue called Let's Put on a Show. Vanity Fair called it "a homespun affair full of dog-eared jokes" that featured Rooney singing George Gershwin songs.
In 2006, Rooney played Gus in Night at the Museum. He returned to play the role again in the sequel Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian in 2009, in a scene that was deleted from the final film.
On May 26, 2007, he was grand marshal at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival. Rooney made his British pantomime debut, playing Baron Hardup in Cinderella, at the Sunderland Empire Theatre over the 2007 Christmas period, a role he reprised at Bristol Hippodrome in 2008 and at the Milton Keynes theatre in 2009.
In 2011, Rooney made a cameo appearance in The Muppets and in 2014, at age 93, he reprised his role as Gus in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, which was dedicated to him and to Robin Williams, who also died that year. Although confined to a wheelchair, he was described by director Shawn Levy as "energetic and so pleased to be there. He was just happy to be invited to the party."
An October 2015 article in The Hollywood Reporter maintained that Rooney was frequently abused and financially depleted by his closest relatives in the last years of his life. The article said that it was clear that "one of the biggest stars of all time, who remained aloft longer than anyone in Hollywood history, was in the end brought down by those closest to him. He died humiliated and betrayed, nearly broke and often broken." Rooney suffered from bipolar disorder and had attempted suicide two or three times over the years, with resulting hospitalizations reported as "nervous breakdowns".
At the time of his death, he was married to Jan Chamberlin Rooney, although they had separated in June 2012. He had nine children and two stepchildren, as well as 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Rooney had been addicted to sleeping pills, and overcame the sleeping pill addiction in 2000 when he was in his late 70s.
In the late 1970s, Rooney became a born-again Christian and was a fan of Pat Robertson.
In 1997, Rooney was arrested on suspicion of beating his wife, Jan, but charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.
On February 16, 2011, Rooney was granted a temporary restraining order against stepson Christopher Aber and Aber's wife, Christina, and they were ordered to stay 100 yards from Rooney, his stepson Mark Rooney and Mark's wife, Charlene Rooney. Rooney claimed that he was a victim of elder abuse.
On March 2, 2011, Rooney appeared before a special U.S. Senate committee that was considering legislation to curb elder abuse, testifying about the abuse he claimed to have suffered at the hands of family members. In 2011, all of Rooney's finances were permanently handed over to a conservator, who called Rooney "completely competent".
In April 2011, the temporary restraining order that Rooney was previously granted was replaced by a confidential settlement between Rooney and his stepson, Aber. Christopher Aber and Jan Rooney denied all the allegations.
In May 2013, Rooney sold his home of many years, reportedly for $1.3 million, and split the proceeds with his wife, Jan.
Rooney was married eight times, with six of the marriages ending in divorce. In 1942, he married his first wife, actress Ava Gardner, who at that time was still an obscure teenage starlet. They divorced the following year, partly because he had apparently been unfaithful. While stationed in the military in Alabama in 1944, Rooney met and married Betty Jane Phillips, who later became a singer under the name B.J. Baker. They had two sons together. This marriage ended in divorce after he returned from Europe at the end of World War II. His marriage to actress Martha Vickers in 1949 produced one son but ended in divorce in 1951. He married actress Elaine Mahnken in 1952 and they divorced in 1958.
In 1958, Rooney married model-actress Barbara Ann Thomason. She was murdered in 1966 by stuntman and actor Milos Milos, who then shot himself. Thomason and Milos had an affair while Rooney was traveling, and police theorized Milos shot her after she wanted to break off the affair. Rooney then married Barbara's best friend, Marge Lane. That marriage lasted 100 days.
He was married to Carolyn Hockett from 1969 to 1975. In 1978, Rooney married his eighth and final wife, Jan Chamberlin. Their marriage lasted until his death, a total of 34 years (longer than his seven previous unions combined), although they separated in 2012.
Rooney died on April 6, 2014 of natural causes, including complications from diabetes, in Los Angeles at the age of 93. A group of family members and friends, including Mickey Rourke, held a memorial service on April 18. A private funeral, organized by another set of family members, was held at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where he was interred, on April 19. His eight surviving children said in a statement that they were barred from seeing Rooney during his final years.
At his death, Vanity Fair called him "the original Hollywood train wreck". He struggled with alcohol and pill addiction. Ava Gardner was his first wife, and he married an additional seven times. Despite earning millions during his career, he had to file for bankruptcy in 1962 due to mismanagement of his finances. Shortly before his death in 2014 at age 93, he accused some family members of mistreatment and testified before Congress about what he said was physical abuse and exploitation by family members. By the end of his life, his millions in earnings had dwindled to an estate that was valued at only $18,000. He died owing medical bills and back taxes, and contributions were solicited from the public.
Rooney was one of the last surviving actors of the silent film era. His film career spanned 88 years, from 1926 to 2014, continuing until shortly before his death. During his peak years from the late 1930s to the early 1940s, Rooney was among the top box-office stars in the United States.
He made forty-three pictures between the age of 15 and 25. Among those, his role as Andy Hardy became one of "Hollywood's best-loved characters," with Marlon Brando calling him "the best actor in films".
"There was nothing he couldn't do", said actress Margaret O'Brien.[109] MGM boss Louis B. Mayer treated him like a son and saw in Rooney "the embodiment of the amiable American boy who stands for family, humbug, and sentiment," writes critic and author, David Thomson.
By the time Rooney was 20, his consistent portrayals of characters with youth and energy suggested that his future success was unlimited. Thomson also explains that Rooney's characters were able to cover a wide range of emotional types, and gives three examples where "Rooney is not just an actor of genius, but an artist able to maintain a stylized commentary on the demon impulse of the small, belligerent man:"
Rooney's Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) is truly inhuman, one of cinema's most arresting pieces of magic. ... His toughie in Boys Town (1938) struts and bullies like something out of a nightmare and then comes clean in a grotesque but utterly frank outburst of sentimentality in which he aspires to the boy community ... His role as Baby Face Nelson (1957), the manic, destructive response of the runt against a pig society.
By the end of the 1940s, Rooney's movie characters were no longer in demand and his career went downhill. "In 1938," he said, "I starred in eight pictures. In 1948 and 1949 together, I starred in only three." However, film historian Jeanine Basinger notes that although his career "reached the heights and plunged to the depths, Rooney kept on working and growing, the mark of a professional." Some of the films which reinvigorated his popularity, were Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962), It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and The Black Stallion (1979). In the early 1980s, he returned to Broadway in Sugar Babies, and "found himself once more back on top".
Basinger tries to encapsulate Rooney's career:
Rooney's abundant talent, like his film image, might seem like a metaphor for America: a seemingly endless supply of natural resources that could never dry up, but which, it turned out, could be ruined by excessive use and abuse, by arrogance or power, and which had to be carefully tended to be returned to full capacity. From child star to character actor, from movie shorts to television specials, and from films to Broadway, Rooney ultimately did prove he could do it all, do it well, and keep on doing it. His is a unique career, both for its versatility and its longevity.
