At the end of last year, security firm Yale announced it was taking over August Home's smart lock business after snooping around in the smart lock space. The collaboration with Nest x Yale was pretty, but far from perfect, while the company's Real Living brand has a number of connected Bluetooth locks that have been on the shelves of your local big box hardware store for several years. The merger was a smart move for both companies. August would benefit from the size and financial security of a large conglomerate, while its technology and UX design would add a touch of modernity to a 180-year-old brand.

The $ 279 Yale Assure Lock SL Key Free Touchscreen Deadbolt connected by August (YRD256) is the first-born child from this marriage. It's a deceptively simple starter proposal that combines a variant of Yale's previously available Assure Lock SL with the Smart Lock connectivity and August features.

Yale offers a range of network modules for the Assure Lock SL that can be seamlessly inserted into an opening in the lock. They offer Z-Wave Plus, ZigBee, and HomeKit compatibility, but can be difficult to set up. The Connected by August label offers much of this connectivity and more with the simplicity and style we expect from August.

The partnership's debut device is certainly promising, but it is clear that it is a first, quick attempt to combine technologies and design philosophies. So there is certainly room for improvement.

Yale hardware combined with August Smarts

The Bluetooth-enabled Assure Lock SL is available at random ($ 279, see here) or in conventional key-access designs ($ 299), and completely replaces the existing bolt and lock controls on an exterior door. It can be locked or unlocked in a number of ways: simply by approaching the door (with your smartphone in your pocket), by tapping an access code on the illuminated touchscreen pad or via the August mobile app.

Remote access and lock monitoring are supported via the included August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge, which plugs into a nearby outlet. After configuration, the Assure Lock SL is further improved with the support of Amazon Alexa, Apple's Siri / HomeKit and Google Assistant. Further integrations with the SimpliSafe security kit and even rental platforms such as Airbnb and HomeAway can be activated with just a few taps.

We are also excited about the addition of August's DoorSense feature, which we first met in our August Smart Lock and Smart Lock Pro test. A small sensor attached to your door frame tracks the position of your door so you know if it has been left open. Overall, this updated model offers significant functional improvements over its predecessor.

Smooth onyx face gives style and elegance

In our review of last year's Assure Lock SL, we ignored the slim, smooth onyx face and the small footprint of the lock and called it the "stylish device" that you will admire every time you walk through your front door. A year later, our opinion has not changed. We are pleased that this new model offers exactly the same touchscreen design that was used for the original lock.

With a length of 3.5 inches, a width of 2.5 inches and a depth of half an inch, it is more meaningful than a conventional key lock. However, it is available in various designs, including satin nickel, polished brass and oil-rubbed bronze -im.

Unfortunately, the compact rear case from August, which houses the Smart Lock's rotating mechanism, the electronics, the network module and four AA batteries, did not make the cut for this model. Instead, Yale delivered the same chunky trunk that we hit last year. Six inches long and 1.5 inches thick, it's big and heavy, while the two-tone black plastic and metal surface makes it even clearer. We keep our fingers crossed that the industrial design in August will influence Yale's future intelligent locks more effectively.

This also applies to the supplied latch. We have criticized the bolt supplied with the Nest x Yale lock and assume that the same model has found its way into the Assure Lock SL box. Unlike the easy-pull latch that Kwikset provides in the Kevo Smart Locks, Yales is stiff and difficult to use. After we managed to extend the bolt so that it fit our door, we couldn't shorten it anymore. We also had to wiggle the lock and its fittings considerably to align them. An incoherent installation experience

Installation doesn't take too long, but you'll need to read a variety of flyers and instructions from both brands in the box before you begin. Overall, we found that experience lacked the finesse of August's own (admittedly simpler) lock installation, which is more fluid and better explained. For example, a flyer in the box requires that you first install the August app before installing the lock. However, if you do this and select the Yale lock, it will be assumed that you have already installed the lock on your door. Do you encounter a technical problem during installation? Confusingly, there are not just one, but two, technical support hotlines (a Yale brand, an August hotline) that you can call. Register your castle with the August app? Enter a master PIN code into the lock and follow another four steps to exit the app. We could go on.

While these are minor issues overall, it is very easy to see in the early days of the partnership where the boundaries between the two companies' proposals meet. Given the recent attention to detail in this area in August, however, we are surprised that the installation experience has such a lack of polish and seamless design.

Expensive upgrade option for existing Yale Smart Lock owners

If you had to justify the price premium of this lock over last year's Assure Lock SL ($ 250 with network module) or August Smart Lock (from $ 219), good news is available. Yale's partnership with August delivers the touchscreen keyboard that is not available with any August Smart Lock. If you want secure code entry, you'll need to find space for an ugly $ 59 smart keypad accessory beforehand. For owners upgrading from an older Yale lock, there is even better news: the August smart locker offers numerous advanced features. If you already have an Assure Lock, simply replace the Yale network module with a new Connected by August kit (packaging of the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge, the DoorSense sensor and the August network module) and you can participate. The bad news? It will reset you $ 130.

Versatile intelligent security functions ensure security

In addition to the remote access mentioned above, spend a little time with the August app and discover practical functions such as the automatic door lock that is triggered after a preset delay. Some functions, especially automatic unlocking, depend on a Bluetooth connection between the lock and your phone. This means that both the consistency and the topicality of the operation may vary depending on the phone model (especially Android) and other factors. With other August locks – and the same phone – we've had happy times when the door magically unlocks itself when we step onto our porch. In other cases we have to wait a few seconds at the door to hear the familiar grinding of the gears. Sometimes the castle simply ignores our presence.

The combination of the elegant touchscreen of the Assure Lock SL and the abundance of functions from August offers real added value and comfort.

Obviously, we currently cannot share a long-term perspective with the Yale Assure Lock SL. Our experience over a few weeks has been positive and we have found no significant connectivity issues. We will update this review as life progresses with the castle.

Once you're familiar with the basics, you can explore a generous selection of well thought-out smart home integrations that are easy to set up and work well. It doesn't matter whether you are friends with Alexa, Siri or the Google Assistant, because everyone is taken care of here. Connect the lock to the Nest Learning Thermostat and you can put your heater in absent mode when you lock the door or light it when you return. In the meantime, advanced users can experiment with supported IFTTT recipes that integrate the lock with smart lights, garage door openers, alarm systems, smart cameras, and even your TiVo. While these integrations are available for all August locks, many are new to Yale and at least help justify this upgrade price.

Our opinion

Compared to last year’s model, the addition of August’s connectivity and features to Assure Lock SL is a real improvement, but it’s asking for more. As with the Next x Yale lock that we recently reviewed, it's easy to see where the two suggestions were stuck together, and in some areas like installation, it's a messy task.

The partnership clearly makes sense. Combine August's world-class user experience design and intelligent security features with a world-class keyboard touchscreen, and you have a brilliant concept. However, it is a concept that takes more time to design (from a hardware perspective) and execute (from a user experience perspective) than the Assure SL.

We are sure that great things will come out of Yale and August's wedding, and Assure SL is a solid start. It's certainly more than a prototype, but it's clearly the product of two companies that are still figuring out how to work together. If you absolutely need an intelligent touchscreen keyboard, the Assure SL is one of the most versatile locks ever due to the features of August – a significant upgrade of the model we tested last year. For everyone else, we recommend waiting a while to see what this exciting new partnership 2019 can bring.

Is there a better alternative?

If you'd like to do without the touchscreen keyboard, last August's Smart Lock ($ 219) offered the intelligence and sophistication of the Assure Lock SL with added simplicity. Keyboard accessories are available for the lock when you really need to use your fingers.

How long it will take?

A lifetime limited warranty (on the locking mechanism and housing) and support from a security service provider in Yale mean you shouldn't have to worry about longevity. August frequently updates its app and fixes the firmware with bug fixes, and the takeover by Yale should provide the resources for further support.
