Then, medical logs—Caleb had been sedated multiple times in the week before his death.

Next, Zayne’s encrypted research notes—dozens of entries marked PRIVATE.

“She always loved him. But she was supposed to be mine.”

“He was a variable I had to remove.”

“I told myself it was mercy.”

“She won’t know. She’ll never know.”

Your blood runs cold.

The man lying beside you in bed, the one holding your hand through every nightmare, who whispered he’d never hurt you…he killed the love of your life.

And he let you fall in love with him after.

Your heart thunders in your chest as you turn back to your messages, hands shaking.

You:

“How do you know all this?”

The reply comes instantly. Two words that shatter everything you thought you knew.

UNKNOWN:

“Because I’m alive.”

Your breath catches.

Caleb… is alive.

He made it out.

You clutch your chest as your vision swims—not from horror or relief, but something deeper, something wrong. Because in that moment, you realise the truth sitting heavy in your heart:

You’re in love with Zayne now. Not Caleb.

With the man who destroyed your world.

With the monster who helped you rebuild it.
