I know this is very unlikely to happen, but I would love to follow other people's RSS on Tumblr as well. Love the tumblelogs we have here, but I mostly find interesting things in blogs like Colossal, Kottke, Waxy, etc. Would love to scroll the dash and see both my following tumblrs and my other RSS bloggers out there. (It would also make my bazillion RSS readers in different devices go away, since I could follow them all in one place).
actually this has come up a few times inside tumblr, and we've hacked together solutions that do this on the dashboard. Reader, on WordPress.com, actually already lets you do this (and WordPress.com is a sibling of Tumblr now), so it makes sense we'd explore the same on tumblr as a broader "internet reader app".
the problem is just making it feel good and not spammy and noisy and how to handle ownership and attribution of that imported content. we'd be importing potentially many millions of new posts per day, which is not "free" to do, so we'd want to make sure it's worth the investment. personally, while i would use it, i don't think many other people would. and it could fill the platform with a lot of not-great stuff, if we also index em for search and recommendations and stuff. a lot of ground to cover in the implications of that kind of integration.

Wix Vs WordPress
Tumblr media
Both Wix and WordPress offer fantastic features, regardless of whether you think a free website builder should host your blog or build an e-commerce website for selling your handcrafted items. If a feature isn't native to one platform or the other, there are programs or plugins to help you expand the functionality of your site. Your needs and goals, which you will discuss with your website application development business, will determine the best option for you.
The Difference Between WordPress and Wix in 2023
Comprehensive solutions, including WordPress and Wix*-based content management systems, are offered by seasoned website creation companies like Novalabs. Ask our specialists how to utilize the free website builder.
What is Wix?
With Wix, you can create your own website without needing to know how to code. It's a "software-as-a-service" (SaaS) tool, meaning you pay a monthly price to utilize it rather than own the product.
What is WordPress?
In 2003, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little founded WordPress as a platform for blogging. Since then, it has evolved into a totally free website builder.
By the year 2022, it will be widely known. According to BuiltWith.com, the platform is currently used by about 36.5 million live websites.
There are two distinct WordPress configurations to take into account:
Web-based WordPress
Similar to Wix, hosted WordPress is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform for creating and managing websites that can be accessed at wordpress.com.
Although it started out as a blogging service, it is now a fully functional website builder. You pay a regular charge to use it, and in exchange, you get access to a wide range of components that help you build a website.
WordPress Self-Hosted
You can download and install the self-hosted WordPress program from wordpress.org on your own web server. This suggests that you should get hosting so that your website has a location. Currently, WordPress is open-source, which means that the code that powers it is easily available and modifiable.
Wix vs. WordPress: Points to consider
1. Usability
One of the simplest website builders to use to create a website is Wix. Why? You can change everything in your program without installing any additional software. Their user interface is quite simple and intuitive, especially for total beginners. They also have an Application Market where you can add features with a single click if you ever want to add more functionality.
However, compared to WordPress, Wix requires far more work to construct a website. WordPress is also well-known for its modules and plugins. However, installing or performing them is typically not that simple. To establish a site, the software as a whole basically needs a little bit of specialized training or at the very least some development experience.
2. Design and adaptability
There are roughly 1,000 (yes, 1,000!) free templates in Wix's layout library. They are organized into classes (websites, cafés, photographers, etc.) and are slick and modern.
Whatever the case, you can undoubtedly relax because Wix offers a perspective that is entirely transportable. Although this is totally acceptable for Google (more on this later), you might need to re-arrange a few features (using intuitive) to properly serve your site on mobile devices.
With Wix versus WordPress, you can get the exact you need if you know CSS and HTML or, on the other hand, if you wouldn't mind investing a few hours figuring out how to update your layout's code.
3. Plugins and Apps
There are many methods to expand your industry-specific site on Wix, and you can choose from 300 free and paid applications in the application market. There are incredible apps for things like lodging reservation systems, artist picture displays, or invoice generation, for instance. The fact that some of these applications are created by Wix itself is actually extremely significant.
WordPress is renowned for its plugins, which include those for virtual entertainment, contact management, website design improvement, and more. WordPress serves as a good example of this since there is actually a plugin for everything. Although Wix's applications are much easier to set up and maintain, your choice is subject to some restrictions.
Conclusion
It implies that the best free website builder depends on the type of site you want to create. Hiring a WordPress website development business is perhaps the best option if you require a solid solution that will scale over time.
However, Wix is helpful for smaller, more modest sites that take less work and have an adequate design. The choice you make in the end will rely on what you really want from your website.

This is true. Even when big posts were getting hundreds of thousands of notes, instead of tens of thousands, people didn't act like Tumblr was a real social media site. I almost never saw places where sharing to Tumblr was an option, for instance. Even when they had uncommon buttons for stuff like Russian and Chinese social media sites and RSS feeds. But also, apparently Automattic bought Tumblr for $3m, and Tumblr's been losing $30m a year.
Which kind of sounds like it's actually making Line Go SHARPLY Down.
"According to a leaked memo, Tumblr’s longterm financial woes have reached a breaking point. Aside from a skeleton crew of essential workers in departments like trust and safety, the majority of Tumblr’s 139 workers will be reassigned to other products at parent company Automattic, which employs around 1,900 people. CEO Matt Mullenweg acknowledged the memo on his own Tumblr blog, where he is responding to questions from the site’s users.
"In response to a question about whether or not Tumblr will shut down, Mullenweg wrote:
“What’s super clear is our previous approach wasn’t working. It didn’t turn around the business to make enough money to support the investment of infrastructure and staff needed to run Tumblr, and a lot of users were unhappy with some of the changes we tried. There have been a few staff changes within the team, but basically what we’re saying is starting January 1, 2024 we’ll try a different structure with smaller, more focused teams working on the core parts of Tumblr that people say they want improved. We’ll sunset or rollback some things we tried that didn’t work.”
"...Tumblr faces the same challenges as any social platform, but it has the unique tension of catering to a base of fiercely protective fans who balk at most attempts at monetization. Tumblr users will pay to send crabs to their friends, or to buy joke blue checks to poke fun at Twitter, but when the site tried launching a subscription feature, it went about as badly as a product launch could possibly go.
"Tumblr was founded in 2007, then acquired by Yahoo (TechCrunch’s parent company) for $1 billion in 2013. By 2019, WordPress.com parent Automattic bought Tumblr for just $3 million. Though it has a loyal base of power users and is beloved in fandom spaces, Tumblr has also struggled to grow its daily active users, especially after its infamous porn ban."
"The WordPress exec said a successful version of Tumblr would see it becoming a place that “everyone goes to hang out online” with a “billion micro-communities.” He didn’t share specifics, like how much money that would require, though.
"...Tumblr today offers a subscription which is currently the best way to support the site, Mullenweg said. Users can choose from either the Tumblr Supporter badge for $29.99/year or $2.99/month or subscribe to a similarly priced ad-free offering. Subscribing on the web instead of in-app allows Tumblr to keep more of the revenue as it doesn’t have to pay app store commissions.
"However, out of Tumblr’s 11.5 million monthly active users, only 27,000 are subscribers (0.2%). If 10-20% subscribed, Tumblr would be in good shape, Mullenweg noted. Then, “we could run the site forever"....
"Mullenweg admitted the team had been spread too thin and spent too much effort on things that didn’t work. In 2024, the company will “hone in on” the parts of Tumblr people love and put an end to the things that don’t work.
"...In terms of missed opportunities, Mullenweg lamented the demise of the Post+ creator subscription, which would have directed all funds to creators without Tumblr taking a cut. But misinformation about fan fic writers being sued by copyright holders led to a coordinated attack campaign that led to every launch creator canceling the program, he said.
“It was sad, because this was a feature users and creators said they wanted, and we prioritized making users money over projects that would make us money,” Mullenweg wrote."
That really is sad. That seems like kind of a classic Tumblr move: buying into misinformation en masse and canceling people or things that shouldn't be canceled.
Like, yeah, it's fun to dunk on opinion pieces and news articles for talking like Tumblr is a ghost town, but they're not being duplicitous or stupid; they're correctly observing that a platform can have a vital community of millions of active users with a steady influx of new blood and still be considered moribund because it's not making Line Go Up.

matt is supposed to be on fucking sabbatical rn. the last time he refused to log off and caused problems swinging his dick around was on the wordpress.org twitter hawking a fundraiser for his birthday and claiming that as founder he didn't need to get permission fr marketing or otherwise worry about not offending people. this time he promised everyone at automattic he'd actually take a break (and become a chess grandmaster in 3 months, which, whatever, dumb techbro ego bs). instead he logged back in almost immediately, berated one of the apps teams publicly, refused to log off, then did a bunch of blog posts and interviews saying shit ranging from "Capitalism is, as Nicholas Stern says, the best way to take care of people we don’t know." through "essentially [queer or Black groups are] tribes or identities that separate us. And so part of me really identifies with Martin Luther King being, I want my children judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin."
i am, thank fucking everything, no longer working for him, and yet. i quit before leadership could force my lead to fire me. a disproportionate amount of queer people have been fired or forced to leave in the last year, bc he has personally been sending messages pressuring all leads to pick a "weak link" and going on about culture fit in ways that are fucking loaded. and then there's the exodus of ex-leads who have been saying clearly that they quit instead of being forced to fire people, and the whole team of quality engineers that was axed late last year (oh but it's not a layoff, they all magically had bad performance despite great individual performance reviews, one of them being on parental leave, and all of them being blindsided), and so on and so on...
honestly it fucking sucks bc for a long time i was able to say, despite matt personally being behind half the bad ideas that have plagued tumblr in the last few years, that i think automattic was still doing a better job than most other companies who could afford to take on a liability like tumblr would do. and i thought that about wordpress.com too, and kept recommending it bc automattic's ethics were at least marginally better than most companies in the same space not built on open source. there were people i knew who were working on the transmisogynist moderation issue, but [gestures] decisionmakers have decided they're selling tumblr data (including private data!) to midjourney instead of doing anything but doubling down i guess. now that matt's weighed in it's not gonna get better. the queer staff remaining have used what leverage they had in every way possible and stopped being listened to a long time ago. support staff are paid far too little for what they deal with. i get messages from my ex-colleagues regularly because they're all trying desperately to jump ship. anyway usually i think people are misguided in putting the blame for corporate decisions directly at the feet of the figurehead ceo but in this case he is genuinely detested and keeps personally making the worst decisions and doubling down on them
As a trans person who pays the bills hawking my Patreon on this site, Photomatt's behavior has been disappointing to say the least. I hope staff can come to a more reasonable conclusion.
