my frog tank is infested by malaysian trumpets.

But I'll be honest: I don't like to use that verb when it come to these guys. They are so damn helpful! They eat old and dead plant bits, as well as discarded food, and aerate my substrate. Right now there are a dozen of them in my filter medium, cleaning it. All I had to do recently was change out the zeolite. They were hoovering the sponge and those little Aquaclear Biomax clay cylinders with such finesse, keeping all the pores open for that good bacteria!

I have thought a long time about investing in another assassin snail. He did very well--he murdered the ramshorns--but he couldn't keep up with those damn trumpets. And honestly? I'm a bit glad he died. The Malaysians helped eradicate the algae I didn't want and keep everything so nice and clean.

The only problem is that my frogs only have one brain cell between them and the trumpets are snack-sized for a huge portion of their infancy, so...

I still don't know what to do about them because they remain choke hazards. The frogs will slap them out of the way which is kind of funny. Clearly they learned right off not to bite them. (The trumpets have a little crown of spikes along their mantles.)

Why does it feel like Satan Himself is trying to sabotage my fish lately? 🥲

First Louie’s filter stalled, which ultimately led to his death through a series of chain reactions.

Now not one but Two of the filters I’ve placed on the yam in the last 24 hours (his usual aquaclear 30, and the aquaclear 10 from the classroom tank) are either fried (30) or having problems (class one- but then it always is.)

I got it working again but ffs. I started fussing with the two old aquaclear 110s we have, but they’re loud as shit and need scrubbed from sitting in the garage. I may just go out tmr morning and get a third cannister filter. Oy vey.

how the snikety snack do I do the whole “set up aquarium keep fish alive and happy” thing?? I was gifted a 3 gal and a 5 gal tank and a bunch of this whit powder nonsense (looks like coke and I’m tired rn so I cannot be bothered to dig it out to figure out what it actually is) I’d like to do a Betta in the 3 gal and like maybe a couple small fish in the bigger one?? Okay so

Without knowing what the white powder is I can't tell you anything about that.

As for setting it up, it's going to be the same for a betta as it is for other small fish!!!

Find the substrate you want (gravel is easier to clean, but sometimes people would rather use sand) and after you rinse it (with gravel at least you poke a bunch of tiny holes in the bottom, cut the top off, then run it under the faucet) just dump it in the tank! Typically you want roughly a pound of substrate for each one gallon, but this can vary depending on how deep you want the substrate and the overall footprint of the tank.

Then, select an appropriately sized filter and heater. Personally, I don't recommend anything Tetra brand, as I've heard far more bad than good about it. My top recommendation for filters is the Fluval aquaclear series, as you can decide what kind of filter media you want, can adjust the flow rate, and they typically last a long time. I have the size 20 filter on my 3 gallon (it's recommended for 5-20 gal) and I can adjust the flow rate enough so it doesn't bother my half-moon betta at all!!! For heaters, it's a lot easier. I just have a little aqueon heater for my 3 gallon, and it's worked just fine for me. Just make sure you have a thermometer so you can monitor the temperature of the tank properly, because if you don't, you might not catch it if the heater breaks for some reason.

Then decide on the decor.

That's going to be more personal taste than anything, with the only real exception being if you have fish with very long, flowing fins (like most bettas you'll find in shops). Plastic plants tend to be really rough, and sometimes fish with large fins can knock them into the rough decor and shred them up a bit. So if you get a long finned betta, I recommend either silk or live plants. Most live plants don't require extra care, either! If you want to know more specifically about live aquarium plants, just shoot me another ask. I don't want to do a COMPLETE info dump on you all in one post.

Once you have all that decided, you put it all together and fill it up! If using tap water, you'll need a water conditioner to make it safe. I always recommend Prime. You get the most bang for your buck with that, and it doesn't just get rid of chlorine, but also chloramines, which some places use instead of chlorine. Most other conditioners ONLY remove chlorine.

With the betta, you can typically put one in immediately since they're incredibly hardy, but best practice is to wait for a week or so until the tank "cycles", meaning the nitrogen cycle has stabilized itself. With other fish, you practically HAVE TO wait until the cycle stabilizes. Big chain pet stores and even most local fish stores offer free testing of your water, so you'll know if it's cycled or not. You can also get your own testing kit, and I ALWAYS recommend the liquid test kits, as they're far more accurate and easier to read than the strips. They all have instructions in them and they're easy to follow, even if it can sometimes feel tedious.

Once everything is set up and fish are in there, then it's typically fairly simple.

Turn lights on and off, leaving them on for roughly 8 hours (6-10 is my recommendation if you want to avoid a bunch of algae)

Feed once a day, never any more than the fish can eat within one minute (I prefer pellet foods, as they make far less of a mess and are easier to portion. Bettas will get 2-4 pellets a day, usually)

Change roughly 20% of the water once a week to once every other week, depending on how many fish you have

If any issues like diseases crop up, then you can Google, ask pet store employees (those who work with fish at least), ask others you know who have fish, or ask me again!!!!

hey fish peeple!!!

my dad’s 55 gallon has been having some ~issues~ and since I’m the fish person of the family I’ve been in charge of diagnosing/fixing it.

so far it’s got high nitrates and high gh (I lost my kh so I haven’t been able to test that), we’ve added some more plants + some cholla wood/IAL to try and help with those since my dad is out of town and can’t do a water change rn.

BUT I’m also concerned the tank is underfiltrated- he’s got a sponge filter w an air pump that’s rated for 80 gal tanks but a website I found said that for 55gal tanks it only does 24.12 gph.

So I wanna switch to a different filter, I’m thinking an Aqua Clear. Would y’all recommend the 70 or 110? The 70 seems to have just a bit over what he needs, but I’m concerned that if he wants to get more fish in the future then the tank won’t be able to keep up (hence, thinking about getting the 110). Which would y’all do??

So my AquaClear 50 (a "hang-on-back" aquarium filter rated for 20-50 gallon tanks) kicked the bucket at a very convenient 11pm last night after I gave it a cleaning upon returning from my 3 week holiday travels. Specifically, the impeller shaft decided that it didn't like being properly attached to the motor, actually, and in fact preferred to whirl around and make horrific grinding noises of the sort you typically hear before something mechanical outright explodes.

I, high off of three separate fairly-to-highly profitable zines deciding that it was time to pay out enough money in the last week of December that I actually have to file taxes in 2024 now, immediately took it as a sign to blow all of that money on a canister filter.

My friends pooled together to get me that exorbitantly expensive ADA toolstand for my last birthday and I love it from the bottom of my heart.

I can't wait to move for residency and get an actual aquarium stand that will hide the filter and the CO2 tank underneath it. For now, I simply celebrate the quieter, less objectionable hum (you'll notice it I distinctly did not use the term "ungodly rattle") of the canister filter.

Unfortunately, the tubing and inlet/outlet pipes it comes with are ugly as sin, so that'll be another month of saving up for actual lily pipes. For now, however, the shrimp are enjoying the sponge I put over the inflow tract, which is nice, because it is exclusively there to stop them from killing themselves via the intake pipe. Not that I don't expect to find several baby shrimp in the canister itself whenever I clean it next month.

Pictured: Ugly as sin, and also the deceptively poorly-lit sponge, upon which sits one shrimp you can see and four that you cannot, including the male amano. Apparently they are camera-shy.

All in all, a nice improvement from the poor 10-gallon filter that was keeping everyone nice and alive overnight. That thing was still quieter, though.

my aquarium filter still making a shitton of noise. maybe i will just hack hunks of my aquarium hood off to make space for an aquaclear 20 so i can at least troubleshoot impeller problems and give it a proper prefilter. fuck the aqueon quietflow e 3 it sounds like a fucking gurgling garbage disposal and the only reason i didnt toss it out earlier was bc my shrimp didnt give a shit but now im like. actually unable to sleep

Pictures of my “first” tank back in 2010. I had a 3 gallon betta tank when I was a young kid for a year. This was a simple 29 gallon with 2 goldfish, Dale and Allie. I bought three and named them after characters from Tucker and Dale VS Evil. Tucker only lived for a couple days and had issues before I even brought them home. I used river rock, had no live plants, kept the water at 74 degrees (at least there’s that), and rinsed the filter cartridge in hot water every 2 weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had these two for 3 years before I released them in a local man made pond that had some other goldfish in it.

I’ve had quite a few tanks and different life in between then and now, various Bettas, ADFs, and Amano shrimp have been my favorites. I’ve done gravel, sand, river rocks, and bare bottoms. I’ve done planted and unplanted. I’ve learned a lot as I’ve gone along, and it’s been fun to test out different things. But, I really want to try the modified version of the Walstad Method that Father Fish on YouTube uses. I’ll probably try it with a 75 when I get one in the next year or two when/if I take the plunge on getting a little turtle. Someday when I get my two 120 acrylics one will be using that method modified with a mix of dark water techniques and I’d love to have some Discus if possible. The other 120 is going to be my first saltwater and that’ll be a whole other adventure.

Currently, I have 4 tanks running since I took down my little guppy quarantine tank.

First, a 6 gallon with 3 inches of Seachem’s fluorite gravel. Plants are Amazon Frogbit, Hornwort, an Undulata, and a Green Wendtii. I keep the water at 78-80 degrees. The filter is a 10 gallon internal filter with extra floss behind the carbon. The tank is stocked with 2 Nerite snails, a 1 1/2 inch Bristlenose Pleco, and a male betta.

Second, a 10 gallon with repti carpet for my axolotl’s temporary housing. It has a 10 gallon HOB filter with extra floss behind the carbon. Kept at 64 degrees. Nitrate eaters are 4 Pothos cuttings (silver satin, marble queen, a darker golden, and a variegated golden), a strand of Hornwort, and some green hair algae glued onto the ledge. I’ve been gathering hair algae as I go along cleaning tanks at work and might cut up my Marimo to fully carpet the ledge if I want it done faster.

Third, a 20H with 1 inch Seachem’s fluorite gravel capped with about 3 inches of aquarium sand. The filter is a 20 gallon with you guessed it, extra floss, only a tiny carbon in this one though because I’m moving away from using carbon. It has a large piece of drift wood, and many plants, Valliseneria, Hornwort, Subwassertang, Anubias, Water Sprite, what I’m assuming is a broad leaf Java Fern I’m working on propagating, and my favorite the Ozelot Sword. This tank is overstocked and my groups aren’t complete, just waiting on the 29 to finish cycling so I can move Nyko out of the 10 and put some fish and the Mystery Snail in there. Stocked with 6 female Bettas, one Reticulated Hillstream Loach, 1 3 inch Bristlenose Pleco, 2 Pygmy Cory Catfish, 3 Julii Cory Catfish, 4 Celestial Pearl Danios, 1 Ivory Mystery Snail, and 1 Nerite Snail.

Fourth and lastly, Nyko’s future home, a cycling 29 gallon with 2 inches of pool filter sand, and a planter with 3-ish inches of Seachem’s fluorite sand. A good piece of Mopani wood with Java Moss anchored with cotton thread onto it as well as four varieties of Anubias (Anubias, A. Hastifolia, A. Nana, A. Nana Petite). Floaters are Guppy Grass and Hornwort. Planter so far: Madagascar Lace, Moneywort (probably will end up floating honestly), and a Rose Sword. Stocked with some pre-quarantined guppies that will be my breeders/snacks for Nyko. Filtration: 40 gallon Aquatop sponge filter on a 20-50 gallon Aquatop air pump, and a 30 gallon Hagan AquaClear with sponge, ceramic, carbon, and yep that’s right, extra floss from a cycled tank. See why I put extra floss in the filters? I can move some bacteria around whenever I need to without making much of a dent in the biological filter on any of these tanks now. Plus, more space for bacteria to colonize undisturbed is always a bonus when you have a heavy bio load like I’ve got going on in most of these tanks right now.

Phew, that went on longer than I intended. I wish I had someone to talk to about this stuff lmao. You’d think working at a garden and pet shop I’d get to talk fish with people a lot more than I do. When I’m in the petroom mostly I talk rabbits, rats, and ferrets with some herps, a little invertebrates, and fish thrown in. Not much time for fish talk, and especially not MY tanks fish talk, usually it’s a customer’s tank that’s the topic because of course they’re picking out plants or fish for their tanks. This fall I’m hoping to switch shops for another exotic pet store that doesn’t sell pet mammals and has some epic saltwater aquariums. That’ll be fun because I won’t just be working with only one other person who’s into exotic pets and aquariums.
