Starburst 2.
Story continues below. Want to read more?
Stepping down from the Copter, Leanna James wrinkled her nose at the unfamiliar smell of briny air mixed with the more familiar acrid tang of burnt vegetation. The compound sensors, which freckled her cheeks like silver glitter, automatically sent a flurry of query packets to AI-Madrid for analysis but since they seemed to be taking much longer than usual to respond or adjust to the glare of the early morning sun, Leanna took the unusual step of opening her eyes.
The landing pad — what was left of it — was broken tarmac: grey, crumbling, and smoking slightly from the targeting lasers Jack the pilot had used to clear the spot from the air before setting the craft down. Beyond the Copter, sprouting from a mosaic of cracks and crazed fissures, a mass of weeds and grass that stretched out from the visible edges of the pad and further away became a tangle of overgrown scrub, chaotic with bushes and gnarled trees. Still further an imposing forest, like a wall, that shut out light. There was no obvious way to navigate between them or towards the broken-down farmhouse they had spotted from the air. In the distance, though, through a large gap in the trees to the west, Leanna thought she could see the Bristol Channel stretching over toward the Welsh Islands, flat and brown and grey.
Leanna was 13 years old, tousle-haired, blond, and tall for her age. She wore a perpetual expression of earnest curiosity, which her mother would claim came directly from her father, though she could never see it herself. Like most of the 10Gs, her eyes, when open, were piercing blue shot through with streaks of gold, which the EVO researchers had been struggling to understand since the trait emerged in the 6Gs. The years spent outdoors on these expeditions with her mother had given her a deep bronze tan and rugged physical presence, which was unusual in her generation. As she stood there gazing out across the landscape, she seemed almost as solid as one of the oak trees that towered in the distance.
It was only when the Copter turbines shut down completely that Leanna could hear the wind and the sounds of gulls high above — and then, behind her, the chatter of the ARCO team as they began unpacking and loading up their boxes and equipment onto the pad.
Finally, a ping from AI-Madrid manifested as a distinctive tone that only she could hear. When Leanna activated the stream, the friendly voice of the AI started up in her head.
[The distinct aroma emanating from the sea is primarily attributed to volatile organic compounds released during various biological and chemical processes. Notable contributors include dimethyl sulfide, arising from phytoplankton decomposition, and algae-produced terpenes. The interplay of these compounds, coupled with iodine-rich aerosols and sea salt particulates, yields the characteristic "sea smell."]
Resisting the urge to ask further questions about the chemical processes but curious about the response delay, Leanna ran a low-level scan on the PTAP metadata, assuming the problem was something to do with their location. She was surprised to see the Packet Transit and Processing times registering average, which meant the entire network was slow. She was just about to compose a follow-up query about this to AI-Madrid when she heard someone call her name and then felt the sensation of a squeeze around her chest — a familiar nudge from her mother on their private channel.
“Leanna! Don’t get caught up in Madrid, I need you here.”

Re-fancast (4): Brynden Rivers (Jarred Blakiston)
Lord Brynden Rios, nicknamed Lord Blood Raven, was the bastard son of King Aegon IV Targaryen and Lady Melissa Blackwood, as well as one of the Great Bastards.
Despite the fact that Melissa was finally set apart by Aegon IV in favor of his seventh lover, Bethany Bracken, Brynden maintained close relationships at court due to the popularity of his mother.
His bastard half-brother Aegor Rios, nicknamed Aceroamargo, and Brynden were suspicious of each other, although both were recognized by their father on their deathbed. On the contrary, Brynden maintained very good relations with his half brothers, Prince Daeron Targaryen and Shiera Estrellademar.
He was considered a powerful warrior and used the Dark Sister Valyrian steel sword, though he preferred his long weirwood bow, which he wielded like an expert. When his half brother ascended to the Iron Throne as Daeron II Targaryen, Brynden served on his Privy Council as the Counselor of Rumors. During those years, Brynden became the lover of his half sister, Shiera Estrellademar; her half brother Aegor Ríos also wanted her, which increased the enmity between the two of them. Brynden was believed to be a sinister sorcerer, effectively ruling the kingdom "with spies and spells." The song A Thousand Eyes, and one more was written about him.
During the Darkfire Rebellion he decided to remain loyal to Daeron II Targaryen and led a group of archers called Raven Peaks. In the Council, he advocated a hard lesson against the rebels, winning over Prince Baelor, who on the contrary was betting on clemency. In the Battle of Prado Hierbarroja, he lost an eye fighting his half brother Aegor Ríos. Their Raven Beaks finally hit their Darkfire Daemon with their arrows from 300 yards away. Daemon and his twin sons died. For this, Brynden would be branded as a murderer of his own blood.
In 209 AD, Brynden became Hand of the King, serving during the reign of his nephew Aerys I. The most important event he had to face was the Great Spring Epidemic, which claimed the life of Daeron II, that of the previous Hand. , two princes and tens of thousands of other people.
He continued to have an active participation in the second and third Fuegoscuro Rebellion, crushing the rebels even though Aceroamargo always ended up escaping. In 233 d. C Aenys Fuegoscuro wanted to participate peacefully in this Great Council, and Cuervo de Sangre invited him and offered safe conduct to King's Landing. Once Aenys reached the capital, however, he was stopped by the golden cloaks and later beheaded at the Red Keep. The Great Council chose one of Maekar's sons, who was crowned Aegon V Targaryen. The new king's first act was to arrest Blood Raven for the murder of Aenys; Brynden argued that he had sacrificed his honor for the sake of the kingdom, but Aegon refused to let Brynden go free. He offered to wear black instead of death, which Brynden accepted. When Master Aemon sailed the Golden Dragon for the Wall in 233 AD, he was escorted by King Aegon V's friend, Ser Duncan the High of the Royal Guard, and accompanied by a "guard of honor" of recruits from the Night guard. They were 200 men and prisoners, and among them were Brynden Ríos and several archers from his Crow Peaks.
Brynden was chosen as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch in AD 239. However, he disappeared on an expedition beyond the Wall in 252 AD.
Bran Stark discovers that Lord Blood Raven, under the identity of the Three-Eyed Raven, has been living with the Children of the Forest for a long time in a cave beyond the Wall, and that he is the last green-seeer.
I consider him one of my favorite characters, unique, loyal, intelligent and skillful. He wasn't interested or aggressive like his other bastard half brothers, he sided with his brother Daeron and his descendants until he had to leave.
He was the fucking master even after many years.

Hussong's Cantina is the oldest and best known cantina in Baja California, Mexico.
The original Hussong's is located in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, and was established in 1892. The second Hussong's Cantina opened in Las Vegas, Nevada, in January 2010.
Hussong's is reputedly the place where the Margarita was created in October, 1941 by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. He concocted a mixture of equal parts tequila, damiana (Cointreau is used now) and lime, served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass for Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German Ambassador to Mexico.
History
Hussong's founder, John Hussong, was born as "Johann" in Forhsam, Germany in 1863. Johann immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1888, and changed his name to John. In 1889, the discovery of gold south of the border lured John to Ensenada. John made a living hunting and trading supplies up and down the Baja coast. In June 1891, while on a trading expedition to El Arco, John's carriage flipped over, and his companion, Newt House, fractured his leg. John brought Newt to recuperate at Meiggs' Bar, which back then, was Ensenada's only watering hole. Two days after John and Newt arrived at the bar, Meiggs attacked his wife with an axe. When Meiggs was sent to jail, his wife fled to California. When he got out of jail, Meiggs went in search of his wife, and asked John to mind the bar until he returned. Neither Meiggs nor his wife ever returned.
After operating the bar for nearly a year, John purchased and remodeled the building across the street, which was a Southern Lane stage coach stop that bookended the route between Los Angeles and Ensenada. In 1892 he obtained an alcohol license and started operating the John Hussong Bar. His license is still #002 and the building is still located on Ruiz Avenue. Today, Hussong's Cantina is in the same building in which it was founded. Little has changed since it opened.
Hussong's Cantina opened its second location in January 2010, on the Las Vegas strip, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel

Joe McPhee/ Dave Rempis/ Tomeka Reid/ Brandon Lopez/ Paal Nilssen-Love – Of Things Beyond Thule, Vol. 2 (Aerophonic)
Tumblr media
Eldritch coordinates by way of Edgar Allen Poe explain Of Things Beyond Thule, Vol. 2 in title. The narrator of the poem from which the descriptive sentence derives hails from the titular locale described as “a wild and weird clime… out of space, out of time” and is on an expedition to an elsewhere at least in part unknown. The mental picture is an excellent metaphor for the music that this all-star assemblage made in Chicago at a December 2018 concert. It’s also fitting that the first part of the performance exists separately on an earlier and limited vinyl-only release.
Despite bifurcation of the music by specific media, time, and space, what’s here holds up pleasingly well to scrutiny. Joe McPhee and Dave Rempis make for a formidable horn line, one forged through fulcrum associations with Ken Vandermark. Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love is McPhee’s brother from another mother, the two first bonding in the crucible of the Peter Brötzmann Tentet and later boiling matters down into mind-melding duo concern. Cellist Tomeka Reid has deep Chicago ties while the peregrinating bassist Brandon Lopez brings a New York intensity.
Parsed into four parts, the concert opens “Osel” growing in density and drive from the spearhead of Rempis’ rocketing alto. Reid saws, Lopez plucks, and Nilssen-Love strikes, each of them rising to a respective blur of activity around the fulminating reed instrument before McPhee’s trumpet enters the roiling fray nearly six-minutes in and signals a switch to a restless collective lope borne on strings and brushes. “Kaali” is also initiated by strings as Reid and Lopez exchange high arco frequencies peppered by plucked punctuations while Rempis and McPhee strafe the edges on tandem tenors building volume and weight.
“Smøla” and “Hekla” reference Nordic locations. Rempis’ alto jousts playfully with the strings in the opening minutes of the first piece with McPhee’s tenor joining to create a bustling four-way conversation. Nilssen-Love joins in short order and the quintet, again at full muster and momentum, engages in an extended volley that would make their free jazz ancestors proud. Sharing the name of an active Icelandic volcano, the last piece lives up to the association with one final ensemble launch into muscles-flexing, organized ecstatic overdrive broken by brooding detours of respite. Independent first part consumed as precursor or no, this music succeeds on all discernable fronts.

Happy New Year! To help catch everyone up on the world that the passengers and crew of the Erebus left behind, we created a handy timeline that spans from the great crash of 2078 until present day, detailing space exploration, the expansion of ARCo., and major events that may have shaped your characters’ lives ᵔᴥᵔ
timeline
T I M E L I N E
「2078」  The crash of the global economy. Wealth inequality is at an all time high and the Earth is in a great extinction period. Scientific advances decline and a scramble for resources ignites several landed conflicts across the globe. The period of comparative peace comes to an end, trade agreements disintegrate, and international treaties crumble.
「2080」 ARCo. is formed after a merger that effectively creates a Pan-Pacific monopoly.
「 2090」  ARCo. sends its first manned expedition to Mars, an ambitious project staffed with an international team that thrusts ARCo. to the forefront of space exploration.
「 2094」  CERES VII is identified and immediate plans are made to reach the planet using unmanned craft to collect samples and determine habitability.
「 2100 」 ARCo. begins to establish a permanent mining colony on Mars, relocating many incarcerated individuals within the privatized prison system to the colony.2105Unmanned vessel, Intrepid I, returns to Earth with data collected from CERES VII. It is determined that the planet is habitable, four times the size of Earth, resource rich, and filled with flora and fauna.
「 2126 」 ARCo. begins to test lengthy interspace travel with human passengers.
「 2170 」 The first manned expedition to CERES VII leaves Earth, intending to set up a permanent base-camp for a flagship colony. The crew spends ten years on the planet, collecting and studying field data. The discovery of ceronium, a naturally occurring and incredibly potent fossil fuel, is marked as the largest scientific discovery of the century. ARCo. makes immediate plans to colonize the planet, refine ceronium, and monetize its endeavors while presenting the planet as “a new home” for mankind.
「 2191 」 On Earth, the North Passage conflict begins within what was formerly the Arctic Circle and grows into the largest armed conflict of the past three decades. Rights to oil reserves were disputed between the United States-Canada and the Russo-Chinese powerblock.
「 2196 」 The North Passage conflict ends in a brutal stalemate, with heavy casualties on both sides.
「 2199」  ARCo. Announces its intentions to send the first civilians to CERES VII, requesting applications for settlers and offering a percentage of onboard accomodations for sale.
「 2201」  Game start. The Erebus is lost.

Speaking at the HOMES UK conference, Minister of State for Housing Rt Hon Christopher Pincher MP said: “The Home of 2030 competition was born out of this Government’s ambition to meet the grand challenges of our time: helping our country adapt to an ageing society, whilst fighting climate change and boldly pursuing our 2050 net zero commitments. Two entries really captured the judges’ imaginations – their designs show the way housing in this country can be reimagined and for that I would like to sincerely congratulate both winners of these worthy awards.”
Peter Freeman, founder of Argent, chair of the competition judging panel and newly appointed chair of Homes England, said: “We had an outstanding shortlist for the competition, and making the final selection was very difficult. Our two winners reflect the very best of British design. Connector Housing shows how good design can deliver the excellent performance and scalability demanded for the flexible home of the future around attractive communal gardens. +Home is leading the way with a fully digitised housing manufacturing process which delivers a bespoke appearance, diverse aesthetics and mix of uses”.
RIBA President, Alan Jones, said: “Congratulations to the two winning design teams. The UK urgently needs new, affordable, well-designed, accessible and sustainable housing that will last for future generations – and these two proposals provide exactly that. The winning schemes show what’s possible when architects and designers collaborate and offer intelligent solutions to tackle the housing shortage we currently face.”
The other four shortlisted teams, and their proposals, were:
Perpendicular Architecture, humblebee and changebuilding, with a team including EcoSystems Exterior Architecture and Arup. Their proposal named Positive+ House seeks to maximise the positive contribution to society and the environment, and utilises the latest in industry digitalisation and a distributed offsite manufacturing.

HLM Architects with University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), Mid Group, Hydrock and Greenbuild. The team proposed a ‘Forever Home’, with a universal manufacturing platform that enables flexible, affordable, and sustainable homes that perpetuate a circular economy.

Outpost with Propagating Dan, Strawworks, Gaia Group, Max Fordham, Milk, Momentum and EcoCocon. Their proposal, Janus, combines traditional bio-based construction materials with modern 21st century techniques to create homes that are designed for a post fossil fuel age.

Studio OPEN with Elementa Consulting. Their proposal is a community-focused ‘Forest City’ design, with a central garden shared between four homes which are built from locally sourced materials and with modern construction methods. At end of life, homes will be disassembled, and components reused and recycled.

The Home of 2030 programme also included a Young Persons’ Challenge, an innovation challenge for manufacturers of new products and systems and a public engagement exercise to understand what people want from future homes. Find out more.
The Home of 2030 design competition was launched by Housing Minister Rt Hon Christopher Pincher on 2nd March 2020. It is a cross-departmental initiative funded by HM Government, with a steering group that includes the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), the Department of Business, Energy and     Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Home of 2030 aims to attract the best and brightest talents of the housing industry to design the homes of the future and is focused on four themes:
Age-friendly and inclusive – appealing to a variety of age groups and adaptable to how needs will change as people become older;
Low environmental impact – applying technology and construction techniques to deliver net zero carbon emissions;
Healthy living – promoting better health and wellbeing, such as through access to green spaces and communal areas;
Deliverable and scalable – homes that can be rolled-out across the country;
In addition to a professional design competition, a Home of 2030 Young Persons’ Challenge was launched in November 2019 aiming to inspire young to let their imaginations run free by designing an innovative and inspirational green home that meets the changing needs of future generations, including promoting wellbeing, quality of life and healthy ageing. Rachael Milliner from the University of Nottingham was announced as the winner yesterday.
The Home of 2030 programme is managed by a multi-faceted consortium led by BRE, the leading international building science centre. RIBA Competitions are managing the design competition element of the initiative. Design Council are providing public and SME engagement, and educational charity MOBIE are responsible for outreach to young people.
