Had a great tour of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Center courtesy of @grisgrismama and was able to meet and see the studios of John Isiah Walton (part of the Level artist collective) and John W. Taylor, and check out what my old friend @ginarphillips was up to! Such a treat and honor. @leeledbetter you did a great job with the studios! It is such a special place for artists who add so much to our community. @joanmitchellfdn #art #artnola #supportthearts #artiscommunity

THE ART OF “MAKING SPACE”
We often hear people talking about the concept of “making space”-both literally and metaphorically: at yoga classes, business meetings, when you finish a meal or debate the last bite of dessert, when moving to a new apartment, and so on. Today I want to encourage each of you to visualize these two words as you apply them to your daily life. Here’s why:
When we make room to feed our imagination, we deepen our connection with our subconscious and the underlying pattern of our thoughts and behaviors. Oftentimes I hear people imply that art is a platform of self-expression limited to the avid artist or those who have chosen the arts as a career path. This misconception inhibits us from seeing our full potential and reaping the therapeutic benefits the arts have to offer.
The expressive arts, whether embraced as a way of life by artists or explored by those who incorporate art into their daily routine, shed light on our innate ability to be creative beings.  The arts mirror our actions and words as if with a magnifying glass.  When we sit with an empty canvas and find ourselves instinctively drawn to create specific shapes or to feel enchanted by certain colors, it is far more meaningful and holds a deeply rooted significance than we may realize.  As I see it, it is the unconscious mind inviting us to synchronize with what is already above the surface, our consciousness.
That said, as you take time to imagine what “making space” may look like to you, steer clear of words in a traditional sense and instead, let your mind’s eye guide you.  Take a blank piece of paper, a few markers and create.  Without judgment.  Fearlessly.  Moving beyond the ego.
Get curious as you expand your consciousness.  Make room for new interpretations and  space for your unbound potential.
