The Fighting Temeraire

This is Turner at his most poetic — a ghost ship and a sunset, saying goodbye to an era.

The painting shows the HMS Temeraire, a legendary warship from the Battle of Trafalgar, being towed by a small steam tug to be scrapped. Once mighty and heroic, she’s now a pale silhouette, fading into the evening light. The contrast between the glowing sunset and the black smoke of the tugboat says everything: the age of sails is over, and the industrial age is here — smaller, grittier, louder.

Turner didn’t just paint what he saw. He painted what it meant. This isn’t just about a ship. It’s about loss, change, and the bittersweet end of glory.

Fun fact: this painting was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth II, and was voted “Britain’s greatest painting” in a 2005 BBC poll.

Take time for your thoughts. Put everything aside for a moment. Get bored for a while. What comes to your mind first? What do you want to do?

Try a bit of Zeno's Paradox and be like an arrow.

After all, the flying arrow stands.

Imagine one moment at one point. These points form the flight path. But the point is dimensionless, so movement is not possible there. The past and the future are actually a group of these points. You can remember them or you need to plan them.

You can only experience the one current point.

This piece is from one of my favorite artist, and its significance is one I haven’t been able to let go since seeing it. “Cassandra” is based off a prophet from the Iliad who refused to give herself to the Sun god Apollo. Angered by her refusal but with no way to take back the power he’d already bestowed upon her, all he could do was take away her ability to persuade. Thus she became a prophet against the people. Ignored and denied, even as she tried to warn the Trojans of their future none listened. In the end the only thing she could do was watch her city burn and pray for the same people who sought to destroy her. This piece was always meant to be a tragedy filled with sorrow, but to me she holds pity and regret. She tried to warn them despite knowing they’d never listen. Tried to do good in a decade of evil. In my mind she fell thinking that if she’d just given her body to the god maybe she could’ve prevented this. This is where I hold anger towards the piece. Because how can the fall of a city be placed on the shoulders a girl, who just wanted to help others but became ensnared in the teeth of a greedy god after her body. It shows the timeless narrative that 1. A women’s body is her only worth and 2. A women will always fall victim to the actions of men.

How it took a whole year and six pieces to evolve a concept

Sometimes you have a great idea, but the finished art looks a lot worse than how you imagined it, and that’s okay! You can always shelve it and come back to it later when you have a lightbulb moment on how to improve it. In my case it took multiple iterations as well as a style evolution throughout the process.

1. Aquarium II - Nov 14, 2021

I started with a pretty solid idea of fish inside glass baubles of water, with a palette of yellow, orange, pink, lavender, and sky blue. I kind of like how the design turned out with the filigree and the cats, but the palette just wasn’t working out. It’s probably because I didn’t put in enough contrast and dark areas, but I hit a wall with this one and put it aside, unfinished.

2. Koi Pond (Winter) - Jan 3, 2022

Using the palette of ‘Aquarium II’ as well as the two circling koi, I expanded it into a pond of circling fish. I did like this one and even made an animation of the fish swimming, but it still felt like something was missing.

3. Circular Motion - Feb 21, 2022

I decided to go full Escher with the fish tessellation (everything is flush, no spaces between) and also push the palette and contrast. I really didn’t like the result. The colours look dull and bland, and the fish look weird. It was partly because of this piece that I decided I wouldn’t do perfect tessellations if it made the animals look weird.

4. Aquarium - May 25, 2022

The first true success from this concept! This is part of the trio that uses the same palette, including ‘Arboretum’ and ‘Archives’. I put the aquatic creatures in clear baubles once again, and my lineart style is more established at this time.

5. Koi Pond - Jun 18, 2022

I fell in love with this palette of yellow, orange, pink, green, and dark green. It’s just a recolour of the previous ‘Koi Pond (Winter)’, but the lines feel wishy-washy to me now that my style has thicker lineart.

6. Flow - Dec 21, 2022

The final success of this concept! This is part of another trio that includes ‘Flock’ and the upcoming ‘Flutter’. I kept to the theme by adding cats observing the main subject, and used a minimal palette so that the center koi would stand out more.

In the end, I am still attached to the two ‘Koi Pond’ variations. I want to get them to a place where I feel like they are complete, but I don’t yet know how. So, they will just hang out in their respective folders until then.

Wanderer above the Sea of Fog

Romanticism wasn’t just about love — it was about the sublime. Nature as overwhelming, unknowable, even terrifying. And this painting? Peak Romantic energy.

A lone figure stands on a rocky outcrop, back to us, coat whipping in the wind. Before him stretches an endless sea of mist, mountains rising and falling like thoughts. We never see his face — and that’s the point. He’s anyone, he’s everyone. He’s us. Confronting the void and trying to make sense of it.

Friedrich wasn’t just painting a landscape. He was painting an internal one — solitude, awe, reflection, insignificance in the face of something vast and eternal.

This isn’t just a pretty view. It’s an existential crisis in oil.

It doesn't matter how many words I use, if it sounds wise or if it's a child's explanation. It doesn't matter how loud it is.

Everyone can let whatever they want through their barrier. Maybe even what he doesn't want.

A little aside about starting over. When I teach, one thing I try to impress upon my students is that if you see an error in a piece it’s always better to fix it sooner than later. If you think it won’t bother you later, you’re wrong 😂 And usually by that time, it’s also worse. Better to undo a couple of hours worth of work than a few days. Taken to the extreme, it’s also important to know when something isn’t salvageable and it would be quicker/easier to start over. Well this Beholder commission fell under the former. I started on it before a Thanksgiving break and knew it was off, but when I came back to it with fresh eyes, I realized that the proportions were WAY off. I started trying to tweak them and quickly came to the conclusion that it would just be easier to start over. Version 2.0 is already looking so much better. It’s much more in proportion with the character in the film and the face is so much more expressive/funny. Sometimes you just need a practice run to get it right. Sculpted with @cosclayusa doll clay.
