Arturia's Analog Lab is akin to Native Instruments' Play series. Both companies are renowned for their virtual instrument plugins. While NI's Play series mainly focuses on sampling instruments suitable for specific genres or styles, Analog Lab is a collection of presets utilizing the sounds of Arturia's analog synthesizer modeling products (V Collection). Yet, the interface is not complex. The sound remains analog-like, while the user interface is intuitive and follows abstract imagery. In that aspect, it seems to be a good choice for users seeking both analog sound and convenience.

Clear Targeted Version: Play

The latest version of Analog Lab is Analog Lab V. Recently, Arturia has switched the sales approach of Analog Lab V to 'Pro' and 'Play' versions. Play is a free version with some features restricted. While it might be a very 'personal' thought, I wonder if this move is aimed at the Play series of Native Instruments. Nevertheless, these two products have similar intentions and characteristics. Manipulating every knob and parameter of a synthesizer to create sound can be fun but quite exhausting. Especially if you're clicking on a small monitor with a mouse, it can be frustrating. As someone lacking expertise and manic passion in synthesizing, I naturally became curious about the direction of a product like Analog Lab Play. Installing Analog Lab V through the Arturia Software Center grants full access to the Pro version for licensed users, while Analog Lab Play seems to be activated for non-purchasers. Currently, the installed virtual instrument or download manager still displays 'Analog Lab V,' but the official name has been changed to 'Analog Lab' on the Arturia website. Moreover, it appears as 'Analog Lab Pro' on search engines, leading to confusion regarding the product name, indicating a need for improvement.

Sound Samples

First Impressions

Whether it's a synthesizer or an amp simulator, the sound set as the 'first sound' when you load a plugin is crucial. Although users may change it to their desired sound, the initial sound when launching a virtual instrument should provide satisfaction and excitement, as it sets the tone for the experience. Analog Lab Play starts with an EP sound reminiscent of the JUNO series. I wanted to try different sounds immediately but found out that I could switch to the next preset directly using the left and right arrow keys without moving the mouse. I only realized this feature later and changed presets using the mouse initially, but I wonder if it would have been helpful to have a popup guide at the beginning.

Switching presets with the keyboard arrow keys navigates through different categories of presets such as EP, bass, strings, leads, etc. It's not random but follows a predetermined order. However, looking at the order within 'All Presets,' it doesn't seem to align with the direction keys. While it might not be significant, it feels like they're arranged more as a demo or trial experience. It would have been more intriguing if the sounds changed randomly.

Once you specify the preset category and press the arrow keys, the sound changes within that category. You can also categorize presets based on sound type or instrument type in the browser. Additional sounds can be purchased from the store.

Detailed Manipulation for Additional Sound Design

I found myself just pressing the arrow keys to listen to different sounds without needing to touch the mouse or do anything special. This seemed to be the identity and intent of this Play version. Nevertheless, some sound modifications are possible.

You can manipulate knobs like Brightness, Timbre, Time, Movement, etc., for basic sound design. Depending on the preset, controls like Reverb become available instead of Brightness, tailored to the sound's characteristics. Adjusting the Mix knobs of effects like Chorus, Phaser, or Compressor allows you to completely remove or increase the effects. Reverb and delay can also be controlled separately with volume knobs.

You can mix an 808 drum with applied amp sound using the Mix knob. In fact, to implement such FX effects with effectors, you would need to manipulate more knobs. There seems to be evidence of considering what minimal controls are needed while using this preset. Although the Play version provides only a simplified set of knobs for sound manipulation besides selecting presets, it still allows for various sound designs.

The Keyboard Split feature, which has been available in Analog Lab, is also usable in the Play version. For presets mainly composed of layered pad sounds, you can see orange and green lines on the virtual keyboard. Two sounds are playing in these presets, and by assigning these two lines to certain keys, you can allocate MIDI notes to be played. It's an advantage to have such excellent features of Analog Lab available for free.

Limited Number of Presets

The most significant limitation of the Play version is the small number of presets. While the possibilities of extensive sound design offered in the Pro version might be a merit for those proficient in composition, the fact that more presets can be used is undeniably the real advantage of the Analog Lab series, which pursues simplicity and convenience.

The Play version allows for 100 presets. While this might not be too few, categories like EP have only 4 presets, and drums have only 7, making the scarcity of presets quite apparent. The Pro version offers 2,000 presets and the ability to add custom presets. The regular price of Analog Lab Pro is $199. Although it's currently discounted to $99, it still raises doubts whether upgrading at such a price from the free version is worthwhile. Perhaps the Play version already offers too much? If you're considering purchasing after trying the Play version, it might be more beneficial in the long run to buy the V Collection, which provides more freedom and utility.

Desiring a Virtual Instrument that Inspires Learning

As virtual instrument usage becomes more simplified and accessible, there are concerns as well. Analog Lab Play allows for the easy use of satisfying, good-quality sounds without much effort. Furthermore, if MIDI sample packs easily available on the internet are used, composition might just become looping MIDI files while pressing arrow keys to browse presets.

As you use the limited number of presets and restricted sound manipulation features, you might begin to feel the limitations of the free version. However, instead of igniting curiosity and eagerness for sound design, it merely makes you wish for more convenient presets. I recall my frustrations and excitement when I first encountered synthesizers as an undergraduate, trying to create patches. Creative Work #1 - Process

SECTION A:

The sonic backbone of the track is primarily based on a sample I took from Ichiko Aoba’s ‘asleep among endives’. When I first heard this track I fell in love with her ethereal, lullaby-like singing, and upon revisiting it recently, I knew it would be perfect for my piece. I took out small sections I liked and placed them into a repeating structure, shown below.

I used Logic’s built in FlexPitch function to develop a melody and also increased the formant to evoke the idea of youth, along with a hearty helping of reverb.

At this point, I had developed an 8-bar chord progression I liked. My music theory and understanding of chords is still limited at this stage, so I’m having trouble describing the chords I picked in a musical way, but essentially I toyed around with different progressions until I found something that sounded comfortable and warm but with some darker tones as well (see image below). For the instrument, I used some soft synths from Synclavier V, to which I decreased the brightness and added a phaser to create a mellow, shimmering color.

Stepping back a bit now to the intro section, I used two seventh chords and a combination of synths [detailed later on]. The main focus of this section is to set up the scene - I used old analog TV sounds I found from YouTube and a repeating motif of distant television dialogue - sourced from the film  ‘High and Low’ by Akira Kurosawa, one of my favourite films that I first saw on TV on a random foreign movies channel. 

For the drums in this section (shown below) I used Logic’s Drum Machine Designer to sequence a basic boom-bap style beat. The sounds were loaded in from cutting a loop from Apple Loops. I added a decent amount of compression to the drums and cut out a lot of higher frequencies using EQ. I also applied Izotope’s free Vinyl plugin that simulates lo-fi aesthetics such as dust, scratch and wear.

After the drums are introduced, the 8-bar segments play twice. Another prominent feature of this section are two melodies I played on my MIDI keyboard. One is a filtered, bendy lead and the other a soft brassy synth sound, both slightly altered patches from Arturia’s Analog Lab V. The two melodies could be described as having a sort of call and response dynamic. I enjoy the soothing way they interact with each other as well as the vocal sample.

Towards the end of this subsection, another instrument is faded in to smoothen the transition into the ‘bridge’ section. It’s a stripped back version of the second part of the chord progression, focusing on the more minor sounds. It’s a simple but effective synth patch I developed in Arturia’s Minimoog plugin with two oscillators, with one oscillator fine-tuned to create a small wavy detuned effect. 

After the drums are cut, the elements are stripped back - the vocal sample is shifted to a sparser sequence, and the slightly detuned chords lead us downwards. The bass [which is a simple 3 oscillator moog sound] continues but now following the lead chords in a descending fashion. 

As we approach section B, a higher note is added on top of the chords to cement the spooky feeling. A wavy, distant synth patch voices a sparse version of the melody featured in Section B to prime the listener's ear for the impending change. I programmed a kick drum that creates an underlying pulse, and an Apple Loop ‘Dark Automation Topper’ is layered underneath to complement  this in the second bar. 

Also notable in this section is a distorted, screechy guitar texture I sourced by cutting up an Apple Loop named ‘Grinding Guitar Riff’ and pitching it up, EQ-ing and adding reverb and delay to taste. I also used the ‘Tremelo’ plugin to automate panning. This guitar texture carries through Section B as well. The result is a screeching feedback texture that cuts into the soundscape, and drives us towards the nightmare. 

SECTION B:

The primary players in this section are a heavy, crunchy distorted electric guitar and a nimble synth bass that climbs and falls, both with and against the guitar.

The guitars are an Omnisphere sample ‘Your Guitar is on Fire’. I played around with the timbre and filters, and added a pedalboard to increase fuzz. I started off originally with just one guitar, but ended up adding another voice in a higher octave to fill out the sound, to achieve the layer-cake orchestration. The higher guitar alternates between playing a harmony and counter melody that contributes to the intense and aggressive feeling of this section. The guitars describe the story of tumbling through the hallway as halls are closing in.

The guitars are complemented by the bass line; they are simple moog patches [for mini v3] I designed with two triangle oscillators. They carry us through a frenzy-like ascending and descending pattern. The top instrument underpins the ‘dun-dun-dun’ pattern that begins each bar, and resonates as a lower frequency to create an ‘oomph’.

The percussion in this section is also very manic. I sequenced this again with Logic’s drum machine designer, this time with a heavy focus on the kick drum pulse and repeating patterns. The drums are sourced from various free drum kits on the internet [sources for all sounds are listed in a separate post], and some from Logic’s library of drums. Many of the snare hits and metallic sounds use reverb and saturation to help them better fit into the mix. There is a small amount of compression on all the drums, but with a longer attack time to allow the transient to provide that shock. 

The melody reaches the climax and the guitars are stripped back to the simpler pulse we saw in the bridge at the end of Section A. The guitars play a slower melody, letting each note ring out and eventually fade. The synth brass we hear in Section A leads us back into the mellower tones of Section A.

SECTION A/CLOSING:

The brass is the leading melody line, singing a gentle victory over the familiar chords and cuts of the vocal sample from Section A. The warm feeling is back, but it is accompanied by residuals from Section B - the bassline is more lively, playing a more dynamic pattern. The screeching guitar textures also sporadically interject, reminding us that although the nightmares are over, our monsters still lay dormant in that dark hallway.

This spring

“This Spring” was recorded the first three months of 2020. It was scaled down to primarily no more than five instruments , drums, keys, bass, string pad, and a lead sound. The song, “More Than Words Can Say” was written in 1991 and the lyrics were written by Lloyd Reid. The music and arrangement was composed by 3760 Warren Austin. “I’m Down” was written in December 2018 and Warren Austin Jr played an electronic saxophone on the song. “You Don’t Owe Me” was written and recorded in 2015. All other songs were written between January and March 2020. During the pandemic.

The equipment used was a Yamaha Modx synth, Arturia key lab controller with analog lab software and v collection. The vocals were recorded with a shure sm58 beta and was composed with logic X software. There is some noise, and interference that can be occasionally heard in the background because this album was very spontaneous, off the cuff, and there was not an opportunity for an Ideal recording session because of stay at home regulations. The World is fighting for its life because of COVID-19 and the Earth is trying to recover. The music and songs feel so relevant at this time because all these thoughts were subconsciously on my mind. My goal in creating this music was just to try and find peace of mind and relax. That’s probably why the songs are so evenly tone.

Music Updates (November 2021)

Since my last update, I've changed several things. Here's the equipment I used to produce my album:

Arturia Keylab 88 mkII Pro

First, I bought the Arturia Keylab 88 mkII Pro. This replaces my old Casio CTK-3000. Here's the features I was excited for:

88 keys! The Casio only had 61

Weighted keys! The Casio only had synth action

Mod wheel! TBH this would come on any MIDI controller but it's something I was shopping for.

Aftertouch! Something I'm still experimenting with but, like the mod wheel, it's nice to have additional expression options

Knobs and sliders! I figured having the tactile MIDI controls could prove to be fun to play with. I can be a very tactile person. Although, TBH, I haven't really touched these yet because I have to figure out how to configure my DAW to use them effectively.

More VSTs! The Arturia offerings come with Analog Lab 4, Analog Lab V, and Piano V. They're all pretty good. Analog Lab 4 comes with a variety of different sounds and it's fun just to put it on random and flip through a bunch. Although I'll talk about software quality later...

Everything else -- like the integrated music stand, laptop shelf, etc. -- is just a cherry on the top.

Did I need the Arturia Keylab 88 mkII Pro? Probably not, frankly it might be overkill. The competitors can be just as feature-ful and sometimes cheaper with some differentiators. The consensus of my research, however, is that the Arturia offering is king of the hill and worth the money.

Hercules KS410B Z Stand

The Arturia Keylab 88 mkII Pro weighs 32.4 lbs. (14.7 Kg)! It's freakin' heavy! It's also long (because of the 88 keys). I was using a cheap Walmart TV dinner table before and clearly that wasn't going to cut it anymore.

After some research, I decided I needed a Z stand. I also wanted a two-level configuration so I could still use the Casio CTK-3000 if the need arose.

I think I settled on the Hercules KS410B (even though it was more than I was expecting to pay) because I didn't want to throw my $1000+ keyboard on an unknown $100 Amazon stand. Think of it this way: if the stand breaks then you're probably going to damage the keyboard... and that's going to be more expensive all-told than a decent stand. Also, the stand was locally available.

TBH I find that I don't actually use the second tier because it gets in the way of the Keylab's music stand extension (which I use a lot more).

New VSTs

Since the last update, here's some new VSTs I've been using:

Analog Lab 4: Lots of vintage synths. Has a great variety of presets.

Piano V2: Great piano sounds.

ReaSamplomatic5000: This is Reaper's built-in sampler. I use it for basically all things sampler related. I've gravitated towards sampled drums using these CC0 drum samples that LMMS provides which entirely replaces Tremor for me.

Some notes on Arturia Software

In general, Arturia VST startup times on Windows are awful. Loading projects in Reaper can take 30s with only a few tracks! For the record, it's much better on my Macbook Air so it's probably just unoptimized... Still an bad experience though.

Startup issues aside:

Piano V2 is great! Fantastic variety of great sounding pianos

Analog Lab 4 is awesome! Overwhelming variety of vintage synths provides endless hours of entertainment.

Analog Lab V is a waste of time. It has less features than Analog Lab 4! I have no clue why this software exists.

Experiments

I bought an M1 MacBook Air (2020). I bought it for travel but also knowing that it was capable of running my DAW on-the-go. Buyin a Mac also gives me access to desktop GarageBand and, in the future, Logic Pro.

Regarding the M1 processor, I've had no problems with Rosetta. Reaper and all my VSTs worked fine, 0 issues. I edited parts of my album on an airplane!

GarageBand gives me access to more synths so I'm still playing with it. It also has support for VSTs like Surge, etc. The build-in effects are also pretty good. I can't believe it's free (* still requires buying a Mac).
