Jubilee
Tumblr media
First thing first, Jubilee shows you the realism of the Bombay talkies era with an interval by building huge and royal studios, cinema reels, crew chairs, hand painted posters, an ambitious producer with business acumen, smoking pipe, outfits, and so much more. The series in itself is quite symbolic for the purpose of depicting the golden era. Yes, I call it a golden era. I read the show is pretty much inspired by the life of Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani. Let’s kickstart.
Praise worthy angles from the entire series that are responsible for the story:
Blazing journeys of 5 characters Roy, Binod, Jay, Niloufer, Walia
The unparalleled fate of 2 studios Khanna studio and Roy studio
The transformations, transitions, and evolving cinema with a blend of crime, love, conspiracy and fame.
Beginning, Rise and Fall
It is commendable to see how the makers combined the most essential attributes of the black and white cinema - Dialogues, Music, Drama and great frames.
The 3 compelling dialogues that summarize Cinema which are crafted beautifully in the film with the scene,
'Power is within this weapon of cinema.'
'Cinema can raise a level by giving the audience a taste of poetry, photography, music and aspirations.'
'Cinema can empower people.'
Let us put the stars on the shoulders of the team. Vikramaditya Motawane, Atul Sabharwal and Soumik Sen are the names. I should say, a gorgeous job on the series by all the teams.
Supposedly it has to be one of the most expensive projects as it costs a fortune to build a city entirely. Especially a city which used to look a certain way but not any more. It is bound to attract criticism, comparisons and judgements. Hence applause for the art department.
Moving to the title, Jubilee. Good one. The word Jubilee was significant in the non-bollywood era. It marked a big success of the film if it reaches Jubilee unlike the crore club where films are less than 2 stars but box office is 200 cr.
Vikramaditya Motawane has created a web series that is uncommon among current subjects. Lots of makers tried to recreate the golden era but most of them went unnoticed. I am fond of Khoya Khoya Chand for the infamous vintage era. However, reaching everybody through OTT through Jubilee with a 10 episode series of 50 minutes is a master thought. That breathing space to judge the success with an olden times ‘interval’ but of a week is outstanding. However, such a big risk.
Mentioning positives of the show to move with. It has a decent Star cast that is not very glittering and glam. Subtle and real. When you cut on the star factor you can actually see through the show and its potential. So I liked the cast to portray that era. Apararshakti Khurana as one of the leads is huge. Names to mention: Wamiqa Gabbi and Prosenjit Chatterjee. I am all praises for Wamiqa Gabbi. Simply Wow. She is a complete package of dance, acting, nakharas, ada and reality. An actress who very clearly takes you to the era of queens like Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha, Nutan and the list goes on. She does not imitate anybody. Prosenjit Chatterjee, an innovative and ahead of his time producer who wants to make a mark but probably wishes to stick to what sells on screen with a traditional cinema perspective. The curiosity that both Roy and Niloufer go on building in their own way is really good. Sidhant Gupta’s energy matches the character’s but his acting felt an over-do at times. But when he walks as a star is one act you can’t miss but notice. It shows a mix of stardom and simplicity. Great work there. He is the Guru Dutt effect as a one man show with actor-director qualities. Aditi Rao Hydari is just being herself, a beauty. Ram Kapoor, Shweta Basu are names known for good acting just like that. All the supporting actors have done a celebrated job in their roles. Amazing to watch Arun Govil in a web series. The casting decisions are appreciable. The character Govil plays as a calm father is peaceful for the eyes and ears.
Music is magnificent. Thanks to Amit Trivedi for giving one more album that can be put on loop. The compositions of jubilee prove that even today a melody is possible with sensible ‘Hindi’ lyrics which are louder than the music and each word, chord and instrument is heard and worth a praise. Kudos to Amit Trivedi and Kausar Munir for creating songs that calm people like us can humm. My personal favourites are Voh Tere Mere Ishq, Dariyacha Raja, Na Koi Mera and Saare Ke Saare Akele. Rest you would not like to skip as well. It has the sound of the period it belongs to. The lyrics bear to our usual spoken Hindi language - simple and understood. I can’t put this more straight. Those days were about melody and dialogues that hit the audience.
Dialogues as expected are filled with drama and conviction.
Favourite frame from the series is Jay and Nilo sitting on the road drenched in the rain in front of a theatre under the poster of Baiju Awara. Splendid! You do not have to show intimacy by stripping down and making love. Sometimes it's just the way you sketch love on screen. Quite a romantic frame. Other Mesmerizing frames:
Binod first in front of the fire that also marks the end frame of Roy in front of fire.
Sumitra sitting in front of the mirror in the train.
Roy, sitting in his private screening theatre, calls the man to project the reel.
Jay Khanna in his own studio on the first day against the Taxi cut out.
The last shot of Roy studio with lights dimming symbolizing the fall.
Jay Khanna’s cabin with Taxi Driver Poster of Jay and Nilo.
And the favourite of many, the RK inspired Jay and Niloufer umbrella scene.
I am glad to see one series with no skin show, no kissing at every alternate shot and most importantly close to no violence. Every other show today is either lust or violence with litres of blood flowing. This series is like detox.
Some curiosity creeps in. Was Phone tapping really a thing? Would the show not be as captivating as it was if tapping was not a part of the show? Mysterious.
Coming to an end resembles a Guru Dutt film with a song like Dekhi Zamane ki Yaari. Saare ke Saare Akele went on flipping pages and how heartbreaking every page was!
Looking at Jubilee overall,
What’s remarkable is the tragic ending given to all the characters like most of the yesteryear actors saw. It is not a fictitious act of drama. We have heard stories where either people disappeared from the industry or their demise was not a very pleasant one or some love stories were not as happy as their film’s or their stardom just vanished with a flop. I admire the way fiction was weaved with the inside stories from the film industry. But across 10 episodes we saw a lot of screen time invested in long pauses. Not sure why the typical fame was not shown like ordinary fans gathering around Madan or crowds at the red carpets of premieres. No premieres at all actually. But the pre-independence period, partition and its effect on the cinema industry was precisely connected. The makers very smartly keep awards at bay as filmfare started in 1954 and this story wraps up by 1953. Also, the details that were very well shown were salaried crew, technicians and even actors associated with the studio, the refugee camps, international interventions and the editing on negatives of the reel. What is incredible to see is the grey shade every character gets with situations. It's meticulous writing.
All the characters had a closure but I wonder what happened to Shamsher Walia.
I was waiting for the last ‘The End’ or ‘समाप्त’ after we saw Interval post the 1st batch of 5 episodes. But that did not come. Another season in making? Giving benefit of doubt as the glorious era of cinema has just started in Jubilee. But I must say first is the only first. What follows is to piggyback on the popularity of last success. It loses its charm. I hope the makers continue the legacy if they plan seasons.
To end this I would say Jubilee gives you the pictorial version of the tales and accounts narrated by the legends and insiders. I will not deny that the series seems stretched or sluggish at times but I think establishing the actors and an entire past generation will take its own time.
Jubilee is a must watch for people who believe in the essence of cinema and Hindi film industry of yesterday. It is for obsessed film lovers who have not yet fallen prey to Bollywood’s faux stardom.

Significant Achievements of India's Largest Manufacturing Initiative Make in India
Tumblr media
Launched in 2014, the Make in India initiative has completed 10 years this year. This initiative has significantly contributed to making the nation self-reliant and independent, boosted the confidence of startups, won the faith of foreign investors, and welcomed foreign companies. In 2024, as we celebrate the decennial of the Make in India flagship programme, let's look back at this initiative and its success.
In this article, we will talk about some key achievements of the Make in India initiative. We will also discuss key figures, such as ex-IAS officers and DPIIT secretaries Amitabh Kant, Ramesh Abhishek, and Anurag Jain, who contributed to this initiative.
Key Achievements of the Make in India Initiative
Launch of First 'Made in India' Airbus
One of the key achievements of the Make in India initiative is the upcoming launch of the first 'Made in India' Airbus H125 helicopter by 2026. This development is a result of the partnership between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) under the flagship programmes of Make in India and Atamnirabhar Bharat. The development is expected to enhance helicopter manufacturing capabilities in India, support the growth of civil aviation, and identify the potential of the promising helicopter market in the country.
Sunny Guglani, the head of Airbus Helicopters in India and South Asia, has played a crucial role in articulating a vision for the Indian helicopter market. Apart from this, several IAS officers, and other notable government officers contributed to the project at different stages.
Development of Industrial Corridors
Another key achievement of Make in India is the development of industrial corridors that will connect all the major cities, easing the transportation of goods and services. Ramesh Abhishek, an ex-IAS officer and the DPIIT secretary from 2016 to 2019, Ex IAS officer and CEO NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant, and other notable IAS officers such as Guruprasad Mohapatra, Anurag Jain, Rajesh Kumar Singh has contributed significantly in Industrial corridors.
Welcomed Huge Foreign Investment
The Make in India initiative has welcomed huge foreign investment, across various sectors, including manufacturing, defence, electronics, and automotive. By liberalising FDI (Foreign direct investment) norms and creating a more conducive business environment, the government has boosted investor confidence, leading to increased capital inflows from global companies.
Former finance minister Arun Jaitley, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, former Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, along with several government officials, subject matter experts, and notable IAS officers have played pivotal roles in liberating the FDI norms and attracting foreign investments.
Shaktikanta Das, current RBI Governor and retired IAS officer in his monetary policy statement on December 8, 2023, mentioned that Net foreign direct investment (FDI), moderated to US$ 10.4 billion in April–October 2023 from US$ 20.8 billion in 2022. The statistics presented by an Ex-IAS officer and 25th RBI governor highlight the significance of Foreign investment.
Significant Contributors in Make in India Initiative
From government officials such as IAS officers Amitabh Kant, Ramesh Abhishek, and Anurag Jain to industrialists like Anand Mahindra, Mukesh Amabhi, ministers like Suresh Prabhu, Arun Jaitle, Nirmala Shitaraman have contributed highly in making the Make in India a success.
IAS officer Amitabh Kant played a huge role in the initial stage of the Make in India initiative. Ramesh Abhishek, an IAS officer from the 1982 batch, has been appointed as successor to Amitabh Kant as the Secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Ramesh Abhishek's appointment underscores the government's commitment to advancing the "Make In India" initiative, which aims to enhance manufacturing and investment in the country.
Succeeding Ramesh Abhishek, Guruprasad Mohapatra, an IAS officer has been appointed for the Make in India flagship initiative in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) aiming to prevent crony capitalism and ensure that the initiative is executed with integrity and diligence.
Apart from this, several IAS officers and teams have been appointed for the Make in India initiative to ensure its success and continuous growth.
Make in India Initiative - Is It a Success?
Many IAS officers view "Make in India" as a crucial step towards enhancing domestic manufacturing and attracting foreign investment. They emphasise the initiative's role in boosting the Indian economy and creating jobs.
Considered the administrative arm of the All India Services of the Government of India, IAS officers also appreciate the initiative to integrate "Make in India" with other governmental programs like "Startup India" and "Digital India." The IAS officers believe that a cohesive approach can enhance the overall impact of these initiatives, fostering an ecosystem conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship.
Multiple IAS officers have also advocated the necessity for skill development and training required to achieve the goals of "Make in India." Overall the Make in India initiative has been appreciated across the country by the notable IAS officers.
Discussing the environment that programmes such as Make in India, Start-up India and Digital India, one of the notable Ex-IAS officer Amitabh Kant once said;
“If such an environment had existed during my time, I would have become a startup entrepreneur instead of appearing for the IAS exam’’
Amitabh Kant, ex- IAS officer
Today, the Make in India initiative has opened doors for a significant presence in India and welcomed several companies in different sectors including the Automotive Sector, Electronics System Design and Manufacturing, Renewable Energy, Pharmaceuticals, Food Processing, Roads and Highways etc.
The Make in India initiative also contributed to making the country self-reliant in science and technology.
Different programs associated with Make in India such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for white goods proved to be a game changer. Highlighting its success, IAS officer Anurag Jain says in an article published in Business Times, how the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for white goods has received a tremendous response, which is considered a significant boost for the "Make in India" initiative.
Conclusion
The achievements of the Make in India scheme demonstrate its positive impact on various aspects of the Indian economy, from improving the business environment to boosting manufacturing growth and attracting investments. Numerous IAS officers including Ramesh Abhishek, Anurag Jain, Amitabh Kant, ministers, and entrepreneurs, as well as the startup ecosystem, have welcomed and supported the initiative, which has significantly contributed to its notable achievements.

"UP High Court Upholds Food Safety Standards: Sugandhit Supari Classified as Food Product Under FSSA, 2006"
The court held that "sugandhit supari" is classified as a food item under the Food Safety Standards Act, 2006, and not merely a tobacco product under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003. The summoning order passed by Additional Session Judge Jhasi and the non-bailable warrant issued by Additional District Judge Jhasi were upheld. The application under Section 482 Cr.P.C. for quashing these orders was dismissed.

Jagdish Prasad & Another v. State of UP & Another
Crl. Misc. Case No.11772/2024
Before the High Court of Allahabad
Heard by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal J
Fact:
The applicants firm M/s Balaji Traders Orai was involved in the manufacturing and sale of a product named "sugandhit supari".
An inspection was conducted by the Food Security Officer on 20.02.2020 at the manufacturing unit of the firm.
During the inspection, 370 packets of "sugandhit supari" were found, four of which were purchased and sent for analysis.
The food analyst's report indicated that the product contained tobacco, was of substandard quality, and did not meet labeling requirements.
A complaint was filed, leading to the summoning of the applicants and the issuance of a non-bailable warrant.
Legal Issue
Whether "sugandhit supari" is classified as a tobacco product or a food item under the relevant laws.
Whether the proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSSA, 2006) are valid if "sugandhit supari" is a tobacco product.
Point of arguments
Applicant's argument
"Sugandhit supari" is a tobacco product, and thus proceedings under the FSSA, 2006 are erroneous.
The product should be regulated under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA, 2003).
Even if considered a food item, the applicants hold a valid license, making the invocation of the FSSA, 2006 incorrect.
Opposite Party's Argument
"Sugandhit supari" is a food item and thus falls under the purview of the FSSA, 2006.The applicants failed to present a valid license at the time of inspection.
Court's Observation
The FSSA, 2006 regulates food items to ensure safety for human consumption, while the COTPA, 2003 focuses on regulating and controlling tobacco product.
It considered the inclusion of betel nut (supari) under the definition of food and primary food in the FSSA, 2006 and its standards under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006: Defines "food" as any substance intended for human consumption and includes primary food (Section 3(1)(j)). Betel nut falls under this category as it is a primary food product derived from agriculture.
COTPA, 2003: Regulates tobacco products listed in its schedule. Betel nut (supari) is not listed as a tobacco product under COTPA, 2003 unless it contains tobacco as an ingredient.

Paying tribute to #KrishnaKalle, an accomplished playback singer in the Hindi and Marathi film industries, on her 83rd birth anniversary today (18/12/1940).
Krishna Kalle was a well-known figure in the music scene, striving for recognition during the era dominated by Lata Mangeshkar. Alongside artists like Suman Kalyanpur, Mubarak Begum, Kamal Barot, and Sharda, she worked hard to make her mark.
Krishna Kalle is remembered for several hit songs from the '60s and early '70s. Her duets, such as 'Meri Hasraton Ki Duniya' with Mohammed Rafi from the film 'Gaal Gulabi Nain Sharabi' (1974), and 'Hume To Maar Diya' with Mahendra Kapoor from 'Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain' (1966), remain etched in the memories of old Hindi film song enthusiasts. Her voice graced the soundtracks of notable films like 'Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain' (1966), 'Bambai Raat Ki Bahon Mein' (1967), 'Raaz' (1967), 'Naunihal' (1967), 'Shikar' (1968), 'Sati Sulochana' (1969), and 'Gaal Gulabi Nain Sharabi' (1974).
Born in Karwar and raised in Kanpur where her father was stationed, Krishna Kalle absorbed the cultural richness of Hindi and Urdu during her upbringing. At the tender age of 16, she began singing at the Kanpur Radio Station. She gained popularity through her performances at various Yatra music festivals across Uttar Pradesh. In 1957, she received national recognition with youth singing awards from India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and the first prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The following year brought her the All India Sugam Sangeet Award's first prize, the K L Sehgal Memorial’s Golden Voice Award, among others. Subsequently, she joined All India Radio in 1960.
Arun Date first noticed her talent in Mumbai and introduced her to the music director Yashwant Dev, which kickstarted her career as a Marathi singer. Active in the Hindi film industry from the 1960s to the 1970s, she lent her voice to over 200 Hindi and 100 Marathi film songs, as well as numerous bhajans, ghazals, and devotional songs. Her collaborations included non-film albums with renowned artists like Manna Dey and Mohammed Rafi.
