Cinequest, founded by Halfdan Hussey and Kathleen Powell, is still going strong after 28 years. This year’s theme, “Impact,” focuses on the importance of the film festival as a platform and opportunity for filmmakers, audiences, and the community. Filmmakers are able to take the next step in their careers by sharing their work with appreciative audiences who provide valuable feedback, in addition to the recognition that filmmakers gain through festival awards or simply having their work included as festival selections. Audience members who open themselves up to the diversity of experiences and stories that are shared through the films in this festival are able to benefit from the power of film to build bridges and increase cross-cultural understanding. In addition to experiencing these carefully curated films, audience members are impacted by the connections they are able to make while participating in both formal and informal conversations with the community of artists and fellow filmgoers that attend Cinequest. And of course, there is the economic impact that the film festival has on the neighboring businesses in San Jose and Redwood City.
Without access to Camera 12 in recent years, Cinequest has been working diligently to ensure that audiences continue to experience the quality and quantity of screenings, panels, workshops, soirées, and other events that Cinequest has become known for. To that end, Cinequest expanded programming up the peninsula to Redwood City last year—which not only bolstered the number of available screens but also eased the burden of commuting for attendees that live or work further north—however, Cinequest remained committed to San Jose’s downtown core as the festival hub. This year, with the opening of 3Below Theaters & Lounge (formerly Camera 3) to supplement the palatial California Theatre and the renovated Hammer Theatre Center, Cinequest will once again be able to screen all films in the downtown core. Peninsula attendees need not fear, though, as Cinequest will still be screening many films at the Cinemark Century 20 in Redwood City, as well.
The big names coming to this year’s Cinequest will include the 2018 Maverick Spirit Award winners Tatiana Maslany, Tom Cullen, Andie MacDowell, and John Travolta, as well as the 2018 Media Legacy Award winner Ben Mankiewicz. Beyond the Hollywood stars, Cinequest is also a great place to meet local filmmakers, like Dana Nachman, whose independent documentary production company KTF Films is based in Los Altos. Nachman, who brought audiences the uplifting Batkid Begins, will return to Cinequest with another heartwarming story, titled Pick of the Litter, about puppies in training to become guide dogs. And it wouldn’t be Silicon Valley without some attention paid to the cutting edge of film technology. From VR cinema programs featuring the likes of John Travolta and Nicolas Cage to workshops addressing the storytelling implications of immersive virtual experiences, audiences will be able to fully explore the world of VR and AR.
Cinequest is also keen to develop community partnerships in order to enrich the festival experience. Cinequest has been proud to center the work of women in film for many years, with 98 directors who are women included in this year’s lineup. In a new partnership, on the eve of International Women’s Day, Cinequest will host Lunafest, a traveling exhibition of short films by, for, and about women. Cinequest also believes in the value of bringing together creative communities. Building on the success of last year, Cinequest will partner with Reed Magazine to present “Poets N Film,” featuring local spoken word artists (scheduled to include ASHA, Bill Cozzini, Roberto Duran, Eli Hansen, Lita Kurth, Mighty Mike McGee, Joe Miller, and Kimy Martinez) combined with satirical dance routines, hilarious costumes, sound experiments, live music, and projections. Two short films about poets will also be showcased as part of this event.
There are many ways to explore this 13-day festival, running from February 27 to March 13, but one thing is for certain: it is an experience not to be missed.
The complete line-up, as well as tickets and passes, can be found on the Cinequest website.

New asthma biomarkers identified from lung bacteria
While the microbiome has gained significant attention for its impact on digestive health in recent years, its effect on lung disease has largely remained unstudied.
Dr. Patricia Finn says this is a missed opportunity.
“The microbiome is the ecosystem of good and bad bacteria living in the body,” said Finn, the Earl M. Bane Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Because the lungs continuously and automatically draw air, and any number of environmental agents, into the body, the composition and balance of microbes in the lungs may have a profound effect on many respiratory conditions.”
New research from Finn and her colleagues in the UIC College of Medicine suggests that the lung microbiome plays a significant role in asthma severity and response to treatment.
Asthma is a chronic disease in which lung airways become swollen and narrow, making it difficult for air to move in and out of lungs. Because people with asthma have inflamed airways, they experience a range of symptoms, including shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and chest tightness.
In a group of clinically similar patients with asthma, researchers identified two asthma phenotypes by assessing the microbiome and airway inflammation. The patients were ages 18 to 30 with mild or moderate atopic asthma.
“This tells us the microbiome has relevance beyond the gut, and that it is a potential biomarker for asthma,” said Dr. David Perkins, professor of medicine and surgery at UIC, who jointly operates the lab with Finn.
These two phenotypes, called asthma phenotype one and two, or AP1 and AP2, are demarcated by the prevalence and dominance of different bacteria in the lung. When compared, patients in the two groups performed differently on pulmonary function tests.
AP1 was associated with less severe asthma; it showed decreased T helper cytokines and increased enterococcus bacteria, but normal pulmonary function tests. In contrast, AP2 was associated with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines, increased oral taxa and strep pneumonia bacteria, and decreased pulmonary function tests, or more severe asthma.
In both AP1 and AP2, the associations between the composition of the microbiome and specific inflammatory cytokines were decreased after treatment with an inhaled corticosteroid, a common asthma therapy. Researchers say this suggests that ICS may function by dampening responses to microbes.
“The data suggest that further study of the microbiome may help to develop more personalized treatment recommendations for patients with asthma,” said Finn, the senior author on the paper, which is published in PLOS ONE.
Finn says that asthma research has increasingly focused on the differences between seemingly similar patients, and that this study adds to the growing body of evidence that patients benefit from precision medicine approaches to common chronic diseases, such as asthma.
“If we can better understand how the individual’s lung microbiome affects asthma and identify likely microbial culprits, we may get to a point where we can predict and control asthma development and severity by shifting the microbiome early in life,” Finn said. “This could be as simple as diet, probiotics or medication.”
A second study from the Finn-Perkins lab at UIC, recently published in the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, showed that even prior to birth, exposure to specific compositions of bacteria may elicit an inflammatory immune response that could predispose individuals to asthma.
“This is an exciting time in scientific discovery,” Finn said. “We are learning that the lung microbiome potentially plays a role in many parts of the body including cord blood cells, which may impact disease onset or symptoms.”
Co-authors on the PLOS ONE paper are Perkins, Benjamin Turturice (first author), Halvor McGee, Brain Nguyen, Dr. Christian Ascoli, Ravi Ranjan and Asha Rani of UIC; Brian Oliver of the University of Technology Sydney; and Melissa Baraket of the University of New South Wales. Co-Authors on the AJRCMB paper are Turturice (first author), Ranjan, Nguyen, Perkins, and Dr. Lauren Hughes and Kalista Andropolis of UIC and Dr. Diane Gold, Dr. Augusto Litonjua and Dr. Emily Oken of Harvard University.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (5R01AI053878), one of the National Institutes of Health, funded both studies.

In psycho cerebral territory
I have been announced in several circles as sharing time with the men in my group with courtesans I have mentioned in writing.
They have experienced at a moments glance what I have experienced out of sheer luxury of having a bride and having a courtesan.
“The same experience” is transferred over from me to a member of my psycho cerebral crew who “know” already what I am doing and tell me thereafter.
The courtesan further thereafter explains this. The mechanism for being is this rearranged feeling of guilt pride and Justice.
This serves as an explanation for separation among the ranks and distrust in the mechanism of partner finding. It leads to an aloof mental attitude when staying devoted to a partner and the rest of a persons life is detailed as unknown.
The desire lies in wanting to explain a partners experience through shared mental experience the experience relies on physical attraction.
There forth many crew members claim certain members of the courtesan group as their preference for interaction, sexual time, sexual play and power discourse and dynamics.
What is further explained psychocerebrally and unexplained in the discourse of one’s life is what actually happened and continues to happen on a psycho cerebral plain and leads to further separation and among the ranks paranoia that the other has attained what he has.
This provokes the cycle of competition in human generation and regeneration throughout the ages has been known as dystopian neo thermal dynamics.
Whereas a world war has commenced on one topic: vagina.
The internet has further indicated that the quantification of this mental attitude has increased the competition and mental attitude of separateness however the favoritism has gone unbalanced.
We experience this through everyday life which is known as the hard ride.
Rape theory as experienced by men has the same connotation in the same thing. That popularity among women has led to competition among men whereby overthrowing g your rival meant going against the popularity of the women of the group telling us that we aren’t the same as them in power.
Women outnumber the men in physical stasis here on earth and are thereby quantified as men’s playthings and subservient lovers.
Subservience comes with a price that men are willing to pay by toppling their economy with wealth of pornography and distaste for other men thereby separating their ranks. The distaste comes as a dystopian future when they are spectated by a psycho physical landscape and we distaste them even more, thereby causing a rift in their mental state and going against this law of patio thermal dynamics, ends up cold.
The men get to participate in each other’s sexual taste and the women do too.
As we were left with one life to lead we are also left with one partner to attend to sexually moral and utterly distasteful that they have participated in a gang related cause-evidence fact that we have slaughtered each other with evidence of the paranoia that we have been together forever and with each other’s partners in life and crime.
Crime against humanity. Separateness and equality in the ranks giving blood to the bad breath of our society.
Ghosting these emotions gives us power and rise to the inequality we starve strive and desire for amongst the ranks.
The army is internal and therefore it is an army against oneself.
The power of suggestion gives us hope that we can be there for each other but in actuality the spirit of the nature of the cause of our reality can be subservient to the nature of the game.
The game being our lives need separation and balance to subserve each other. We need love and life and there giving each other space hope and future organisms to live by.
Fact production future production and hope rest on these fates.
I am producing the future in these forms, pornography, art and culture.
Technology has subserved and influenced each mortal human being on this earth through the ages when it has commenced with living with oneself.
I thought that I would have said this sooner but our fates rest in our hands. In sameness we realize we have concluded that we are resting with one’s fate as a mortal human being. We have intervened in our philosophy as mortal humans and have loved each other to extinction and beyond. With each other and saying everything and nothing all at once we begin to realize we are each other’s brothers and mothers. We have the stamina and subservient nature to realize and produce that what we have come for. A family.
The goal wasn’t to aim for a nature and nurture situation but to deliver our society for a porn filmed and fueled intervention on the species when and where we all make love to each other for fun.
Don’t go back to a society and inner workings of man where we can do this all the time but to say we have nurtured ourselves out of a pornography ring and into our cradles and open arms.
Of course therein lies the villainy. That what is felt in the central node may have felt your wife up the vagina before we get to it.

"i like things that are handmade and i like to see people's hand in the world, anywhere in the world; it doesn't matter to me where it is. and in my own work, i do everything by hand. i don't project or use anything mechanical, because even though i do spend a lot of time trying to perfect my line work and my hand, my hand will always be imperfect because it's human. and i think it's the part that's off that's interesting, that even if i'm doing really big letters and i spend a lot of time going over the line and over the line and trying to make it straight, i'll never be able to make it straight. from a distance it might look straight, but when you get close up, you can always see the line waver. and I think that's where the beauty is." - margaret kilgallen, RIP
