🍭☀️A Cruelty Vivid and Sweet
Slow burn angsty Ominis x F!Reader [T-Rated, 5.4k words]
Tumblr media
Never before had he really met a Muggle-born. He had no idea how naïve they were. How unprepared. Certainly, his family said they, and Muggles in general, were inferior, stupid, barely worthy to be at Hogwarts. Barely worth existing. But you weren't any of those things. You were just afraid.
In which, against the wishes of his staunchly pure-blood supremacist family, Ominis Gaunt befriends you, a naive Muggle-born Hufflepuff, and his life inexplicably changes.
Or, what happens when a pure-blood from an anti-Muggle family falls in love with a Muggle-born?
Tropes: angst/ romance/ drama, slow burn, black cat x golden retriever, opposites attract, forbidden love, pure-blood culture, canon rewrite, book!canon compliant.
[MASTERLIST][NEXT] [read on AO3, read on Wattpad]
TW: familial abuse, blood/ injury, torture, fantasy prejudice/ racism.
Tumblr media
1: Strawberry Laces
He calls you Gibberish, because sometimes that's all you speak.
In first year, Ominis remembers crossing your path after the Sorting ceremony. You, a shaky little Muggle-born, near no knowledge of the magical world and its machinations, and the depths of its cruelty. You, who only enjoyed wonder in everything: every moving painting, the candles that floated untethered, and the way the air hummed with something else, something ethereal. He remembers hearing your distinctive voice in the foyer outside the Great Hall.
He remembers how you, somehow, managed to get lost.
Your upbeat curiosity pealed like a bell amongst the sombre tension of the first-year Slytherins. For some reason, your hair is what Ominis remembers best. Later he would find out it was thick, bouncy wild curls pinched into two pigtails at the side of your head, but the first thing he recalls is the smell, faintly of something saccharine.
"You're in the wrong place."
A pause, presumably as you realised he was addressing you. "Aren't we going to the form rooms?" you asked, that high-pitched voice like birdsong at dawn. It was hard to forget, given the nervous squeal you made when you were called up to be Sorted. It was already ingrained into his head.
"You're meant to be going to the Hufflepuff common room," he said, frowning. Form. What was a form? He pointed his wand at the Hufflepuffs heading the other way through the hall. "Your house is over that way."
"Oh!" You giggled, a sickly sweet noise, and headed over. "Thanks!"
How did you even get them mixed up? Ominis still doesn't know. He didn't think about you again until the next day, when term officially began Charms. By chance, he was seated next to you. That smell again, that voice.
"Have no fear, Master Gaunt," cheered Professor Ronen, "I will be giving you more practical assignments, so you don't have as much writing to do."
That was some consolation, he supposed. Practical assignments played to his best strengths.
When Ronen moved on to check Adelaide's technique, Ominis heard your chair squeak. Heard the hiss of your clothes as you peered over. Something rattled on your face – glasses.
"It's... Ominis, right?"
He pursed his lips, displeased at the interruption. "Can I help you?"
"You're an actual wizard?"
"... What?"
"I mean, you know, you were born into this magic thing."
A pure-blood, is what you meant. "Yes. What of it?"
"That's great, because I just wanted to know... erm... which way around does the wand go?"
That had to be a joke. "You can't be serious."
"S-Sorry, I swear I'm not pulling your leg." Pulling your leg? You laughed nervously. "It's just— my wand is a little crooked, and it doesn't have a handle, like yours— so I don't actually know if I'm holding it the right way up or not, and I don't want to blast myself in the face."
A wave of that saccharine soap again. Ominis wrinkled his nose and continued practicing Wingardium Leviosa. Swish and flick. "Can you really not tell?"
"No..."
You sounded genuine. Not joking.
Hmm.
"It's the tapered point that's the end."
"They're both thin."
"Let me feel it."
You hesitated. "Feel— it?"
"Well I can't look at it, can I?"
Another moment of hesitation. An intake of breath.
"Oh!" You nearly blew out his eardrums. "Sorry. You're blind!"
"Well spotted."
"I didn't notice."
"I figured."
You made an indignant noise and handed it over. His senses immediately flooded. It was an intimate sensation, to hold someone else's wand, especially that of a near-stranger. To feel the springy wood beneath his fingertips, the coarse grains of the wood. A light wood, airy. He was no expert on wands, and certainly no Ollivander, but he'd been touching and feeling things long enough to recognise details most sighted people would miss.
Yes, it was crooked, an odd shape for an odd person. He drew his thumb up the wand's janky spine.
"That's the top." He held the handle and offered it back to you. "There."
"Brilliant. Okay." You took the wand back. Cleared your throat. "Here goes then. Wingardium Leviosa!"
Something shifted beside him. A soft fabric drew up against his leg, raising higher and higher, past his head—
"Wait," Ominis spluttered, "is that my satchel?"
"It didn't— oh!" Panic fluttered through you. "No, no, no! Stop, wand! Un-Wingardium Leviosa! Erm, Spellus Stoppus?"
He didn't know how you did it, but even when he told you the right orientation, still you managed to point it the wrong way, the tip facing the bag by his chair, and Professor Ronen had to instruct you on the correct way by using chalk to mark the right end – after he got Ominis' bag down from the ceiling.
There are so many things he still doesn't understand about you.
Weeks into first year, when he'd learnt to adapt to your strange, Muggle quirks, your funny language and unwittingly explosive efforts in other classes, the two of you were doing homework on the lawn with Ominis' Slytherin dormmate, Sebastian Sallow. Sebastian thought you odd, too, but he had more exposure to Muggles than Ominis did – certainly more than the anti-Muggle disdain he received at home – and quickly warmed to your jolly attitude.
"It's strange. My dad hears all the confectionary chatter from America. Apparently this thing called peanut butter is making waves over there now." You grounded the sugar quill with your teeth – Ominis could hear it like a second heartbeat. "Doesn't that sound disgusting?"
"It does," marvelled Sebastian. "Butter and peanuts? What a strange combination."
"I know!" You rolled onto your back – and Ominis caught it again. Your scent. So intrinsically tied to you that every fresh wave made him feel comforted somehow. "You can't just put those two things together!"
"Your soap," Ominis blurted, and the conversation paused so abruptly that his cheeks heated. "What is it? It doesn't smell like anything I know."
"Oh, yes." Your voice was contemplative, sheepish as you pushed up your glasses. "I brought it from home. It reminds me of my family. Smells like our confectionary shop."
That didn't answer the question, and by his expression, you knew it.
"It's strawberry laces! You know? They're strawberry-flavoured, and they look like laces..."
"What in Merlin's name is a strawberry lace?"
"It's a type of candy! They're chewy and sweet!"
"Are they laces for your shoes?"
"No! That's just the shape of them."
Sebastian leant over crinkly parchment. "Do you mean red liquorice?"
"Yes!" You belted it so loud Ominis fell back. "Sorry! Sorry, yes. Red liquorice. That's its proper name."
"Then why didn't you call it red liquorice?"
"... Because it's strawberry laces. That's what we call them. It's my favourite treat."
"But that makes no sense! Why not just call it what it is?"
"Is it a Muggle thing?" Sebastian asked.
"No." A beat. "Maybe?"
Ominis scoffed. "You talk so much nonsense I can barely understand you sometimes."
You spat out your tongue. "Oh yeah, Ominis Gaunt? Mister, I Cast Whoopy-Doopy-Goopy to make your Thingimajig Ringadingdong?"
He spluttered, exasperated. "I don't sound like that! That's— that's just gibberish!"
"... Wait, is gibberish an actual language? Because goblins speak Gobbledegook, so..."
Sebastian howled with laughter. Your naivety was kind of adorable.
"The only one who speaks gibberish here," Ominis said, going back to his wandwork, "is you."
"Hmph!" You enunciated your indignation with such purpose. "Then maybe I'm fluent!"
And you were. You still are.
Neither Ominis nor Sebastian let you live it down, and the effects rippled throughout the first years. Sebastian's sister Anne found you adorably strange and joyfully brazen. Your Hufflepuff housemates enjoyed your humour and shenanigans. Even outside of your mismatched little groups, others in the the year, like Amit Thakkar and Garreth Weasley, thought you were a hoot, the silliest Muggle-born they'd ever met. Gibberish was your native language, and they all agreed. Soon everyone gave you the nickname. At one point it became Gibby. You pouted at each mention at first, but you grew fond of it eventually – then wearing it like a badge of honour. You adopted it, made it your own.
And even into second and third year, when the magical world became more familiar, you were Gibby.
Of course, you were never Gibby when Ominis wrote home. You were never anyone. It didn't take Ravenclaw wisdom to clock that his friendship with you was never considered proper. Pure-bloods, you learnt as quickly as he did, were the superior blood-status, and Muggle-borns the dregs left to rot at the bottom of the scummy barrel. That Mudblood was a slur of the lowest calibre. Ominis was shrewd enough to lie by omission in his letters back home, when his parents demanded to know about his friends and alliances. He simply never mentioned you at all, and all your adventures were given to Sebastian.
That didn't stop them from finding out.
"Who is she?"
Father had marched him to his study, made him sit. Even though a fire roared in the hearth, the place was cold, a slick tar against his skin. Even in the plushest chair, a high-back velvet with curling arms, he was the most uncomfortable he'd ever been. Even though he was blind, he could feel his parents' gaze like the tips of a thousand knives, pressed to the soft flesh of his throat.
"She's— no one."
"Don't lie to me," snapped his father. His mother was silent but complicit, by the way she paced from wood to carpet to wood again. "Edwin Malfoy said his son mentioned you frolicking around the school with some Hufflepuff. A Muggle-born."
There was no way he could deny it. Damn Peregrine Malfoy. They weren't in the same year group at school; why did he have to mention you at all? Why couldn't he have kept his mouth shut? It had been three years already – what was another four?
Ominis contemplated what to say, urging his fingers to still, his toes to flatten. He could not betray his fear, betray the sudden rising heartbeat, the clamminess of his palms, nor the pure, unadulterated dread that roiled through him.
"It's— it's just Gibby," he forced out as calmly as he could.
"Gibby?" shrilled his mother.
"Not her real name," Ominis said quickly. "It's actually—"
"But she's Muggle-born?" his father demanded.
"Yes, but—"
"Have we taught you nothing, boy? Muggles, and their filthy spawn, are weak. Muggle-born magic is diluted, and therefore they are not worthy to wield it."
His mother was sobbing in the corner, like this extended hand of friendship he'd given to you, this supposed error, was grievous enough to tear a hole through her heart.
"Our bloodline is sacred. We are descendants of the great Salazar Slytherin himself! When you choose to associate with these disgusting Mudbloods," he spat the word, "you are sending a message that these interlopers can take our land, our magic and our privileges. They can encroach on what is rightfully ours. Did you know they used to burn witches? Even though, in every way, we are superior to them?" His father drummed impatient fingers on the marble mantelpiece. Each clack sent more and more terrified shivers down Ominis' spine. "A good thing Noctua went missing. Spending too much time with her addled you. Now we must have a more formal hand in your education."
Ominis didn't know how to respond to that. How could they say that about Aunt Noctua? "What do you—?"
A knock at the door cut through his words – Ominis immediately recognised the knock's low timbre. His older brother. Marvolo. Panic rendered him paralysed.
"Come in," called his father.
Ominis heard his brother's footsteps. Heard the cruelty of his smile.
"Is it time, Father?"
"Yes. Take him downstairs."
Ominis didn't speak. There was no point. Marvolo, of all his older siblings, was the cruellest, an exact replica of their father who despised Muggles and Muggle-borns, despised Noctua, and revered the family name and the bloodline as divine, rather than simply blood and sinew and a surname. His grip on Ominis' shoulder was hard enough to draw blood, curled into the muscle like claws.
They all went downstairs, silent. Ominis had never been to this part of the house before – sometimes, when the moon was highest, when he stowed quietly to the kitchens for a midnight nibble, he heard screaming. At first he thought it his imagination, the night playing tricks on his keen senses.
When he descended into the cellar, he realised for the first time that it was not the night's whims having their fun. The dark, after all, had never been so wicked to him before.
The smell was the first thing that hit him. A strong, tangy scent, coppery and unpleasant. Blood. He couldn't help a sharp intake of breath, which only left the taste on his tongue. The chill was second, as bone-deep as a tundra. By the echo of breath, the ceiling was low and poorly lit, for his father cast a Fire charm at the braziers besides the doorway.
There was a ruffle of cotton. A low murmur. Marvolo's grip ceased, and he roughly shoved Ominis forwards.
"Do you know what's in front of you?"
Tremoring, Ominis reached for his wand. In the time he'd bought it at Ollivander's, it had become something special to him. A way to navigate the castle, yes, but it was much more than that. Almost sentient. It seemed to know how he was feeling and how to react to it, just as it did now, pulsing like a wild heartbeat beneath his fingertips. At eleven he'd been sceptical of the phrase 'the wand chooses the wizard', but now he believed there was truth in it. His wand had shown him that magic was in the air, all around him – all he had to do was draw on it.
He reached out, trying to fit together the scattered pieces of feedback. The ruffles and strangled breaths and scratch-scratch of rope. The cold, as sharp as the ice they used to keep fruit and meat fresh. The overwhelming smell of blood and dirt.
"Is—" He shouldn't have second-guessed himself, not with his family present, but he couldn't believe what he was hearing, smelling, tasting, what he was potentially beholding. "Is that a person trussed up?"
"You missed an important factor," said his father. "This is no person. This is mud."
A Muggle.
The Muggle whimpered. There was some gag around their mouth, and yet Ominis deciphered every note of fear.
"But this is dangerous!" He went to hide his wand, but Marvolo's hand stopped him. "You shouldn't have brought—"
"We can do what we want," Marvolo said. "We're Gaunts, little brother, and this scum before you requires humbling."
Ominis swallowed bile. Perhaps errantly, your voice hummed in his mind then. Your laugh. He imagined hearing it. Imagined it was you tied to the floor.
"No," he said at once. "I won't do it."
"The Cruciatus Curse has been used to subdue our enemies for centuries." Pride flowed through his brother's words. "You should be overjoyed to have this opportunity. Your siblings and I were thrilled with our first Muggles."
They've tortured innocent people before. All his brothers and sisters – they'd all done it.
"But— I can't hurt them. T-They've done nothing wrong to me. They're just—"
"They are worms beneath our boots, and their very existence is an abomination." Marvolo gave him a rough jerk. "I taught you how to use Crucio."
Yes, but Ominis swore it was only for self-defence.
When he didn't reply, Marvolo spoke, "So cast it now, on the Muggle."
Ominis shook his head. Fear and panic ran his mouth dry. "I can't."
"You will, or so help me, boy, you'll be a disgrace to the family," muttered his father. "Cast it."
"No."
"Cast. It."
"I won't."
Marvolo's laugh rang out. "I didn't realise your spine was made of cotton, Ominis."
But Ominis was made of steel in that moment, for he couldn't imagine a better reason to defy his family than for the sake of Muggles and Muggle-borns. For you.
"I won't cast it."
"Then you clearly need some encouragement." And before Ominis could even process what that meant, Marvolo yelled, "Crucio!"
It was unlike anything he'd ever felt before. Pain, as he understood, was simply a reflex of the body to let the brain know something, somewhere, was wrong. A warning sign to cease whatever behaviour was causing it.
This was pain with no epicentre. There was no singular point that was bowing to the most pressure. This was all-encompassing and never-ending. This was his stomach and chest and heart, his brain and lungs, from the tips of his fingers to the knobs of his shoulders and knees and the ends of his toes. Every part of him, alight, doused in oil and set on fire through the concentrated rays of the sun.
Nowadays he doesn't remember that moment very clearly. The anguish was so great, he must've blacked out once or twice. Marvolo held it for a long time, longer than he needed to ingrain his foul teachings. All Ominis does remember is the pain, so acute that words fail to describe it, even to this day.
And the thought, back then, that his family could cause such pain, tore something inside him he would never be able to stitch back up.
When his brother released the curse, Ominis was curled up on the floor. Something wet lay beneath his cheek. Perhaps sweat. Perhaps spit. Perhaps blood, his own or the Muggle's. Perhaps even piss, for the curse had been too much for his bladder to handle. Every nerve ending on his skin was trembling. He'd let go of his wand somewhere in the room, and even now he couldn't sense it, like the pain had burned a hole where instead should be that bond.
"That is a Gaunt," said his father, pride sugaring his tone. "Your brother didn't hesitate."
Marvolo's voice was warm with mockery. "I have no qualms using the Cruciatus Curse on you, little brother, if it will teach you a valuable lesson."
What lesson could that possibly be? In the dizziness, Ominis couldn't untangle what the crucial moral was. It was a puzzle he couldn't solve, and perhaps never would.
"Would you like me to cast that on you again?"
"No!" Ominis managed to weep. He dribbled as he did, and shame burst through him. "N-No, please."
"Then get up," Marvolo hauled him to his feet, whether he was ready or not, "and cast it on someone who really deserves it."
Ominis is ashamed of the memory that follows. Sometimes he wishes he could alter it, pull it out of his mind like brittle thread and snap it into pieces, but then he wouldn't remember the valuable lesson he did learn that day. That his family were a cruel peoples.
And, as he raised his wand at his victim, that he was cruel now too.
"Crucio!"
Back near the end of third year, Ominis had found you climbing a tree on the school grounds. The wind was high and fretful – like his nerves, hearing you so far up, that carefree giggle carried on the current like bird's wings.
"Is that you, Gibby?"
"Ominis!" you chirruped. "You have to come up. The view is great!"
"I bet it's really swell."
"Sorry, sorry! I mean— oh, just come up! It's amazing, I promise!"
"You know you have a broom, right?" he called up, exasperated. "It's much safer than climbing trees! Where you could fall."
"I know! But this is all I've got back home, so I'd better get used—"
You let out a noise. The tree rumbled. There were four hard knocks that sent terror through him like lightning and a sudden thump on the ground like a knife to the gut. He rushed over to where you were crying out, breathless with pain. He'd never heard such a keening sound before, not in a physical, raw sense, where he could almost feel it himself. Pain that was almost too burdened to bear.
"Ugh, you're so foolish!" He nocked his wand skywards and sent out a flare. Hopefully someone would see it. "What have you hurt?"
You were in too much agony to reply – something had to be broken.
"I'm going to feel you, okay?"
You made a straggled noise he took for consent and pressed a hand to your arm. It came away wet. Blood. A broken and torn arm for certain then. You wheezed, too. Perhaps a broken rib. He pressed gently around, searching for the worst sources of pain through the leaf-ridden folds of your robes and shattered remnants of your glasses, but only when he reached forwards, felt the wetness around your upper lip and cheeks, did he realise you were choking from the blood of a broken nose.
He'd never felt a face before, not anyone outside his family. Yours was smaller than he'd expected. Your presence was so loud, so vivid, he'd expected you to match it physically as well. Even in the state that you were he could smell that sweet soap, and for some reason had the sudden urge to touch the rest of your face, explore how you were made, how the world shaped you.
"I'm going to staunch the bleeding." Instead he dispelled the thoughts and pointed his wand, enunciating as clearly as he could, "Episkey!"
A whip-like crack. You shrieked, but after a moment, your hysteria calmed, and he wiped the blood around your nose with his sleeve.
"I—" Tears filtered your winded voice. "I can't... move... my leg."
"It's probably broken too, like every other bone in your body," he retorted sharply. Good thing he'd had advance tutoring for healing spells. "I told you it was dangerous."
"I know," you bleated.
But his anger dissolved. There was no point rubbing it in your face. Whether he was right, or whether you had come down the tree perfectly well, you would've done it anyway.
"Can you last until someone comes to help?" he mumbled, lowering his tone.
"I can last."
"Good. I'll wait with you."
"Promise I... won't look into the light."
Ominis wrinkled his nose. "A sight joke now? Really?"
"No, no... it's a Muggle saying— never mind." A weighted pause. "Thank you."
He scoffed. "For being right?"
"Yes," you said softly, an admission. "But also... for being my friend."
Madam Blainey hurried over eventually and carted you away, cooing over your injuries, admonishing your actions, and Ominis stayed at your side until you drank every last acrid drop of healing potion, and you were fast asleep in the infirmary wards, at peace.
Even though you were silly, frivolous, an oddball who spoke fluent gibberish, he never wanted you to be in such pain again. He certainly couldn't imagine being the cause of it.
Which is why he swore on that day, after the Muggle had long since collapsed on the cellar floor, after his father and mother and brother delighted in his first successful cast of Crucio, that he would never again cause anyone such agony. Least of all you.
So in fourth year, he did his best to ignore you. To create a wide berth. And to find a way to escape his family.
He hung out more with Sebastian, even though his friend was slowly changing, ambitions growing. Both of them were equally matched in many things, like academics and opinions, and with Anne taking suddenly ill, trapped within the bindings of a unknown curse, Sebastian had his own demons about finding her a cure. They explored more outside – the countryside was huge, after all, and Ominis had always found the place intimidating for someone who couldn't see any of it. They lounged in the Undercroft more often – their own hiding spot to where they could escape the stress of school and home life and the increasingly pressing threat of a goblin rebellion. Mostly, Ominis went there to avoid you.
Sebastian quickly noticed you were missing from these adventures, though. Nothing much escaped his notice, even when his sister's illness consumed him – too shrewd to forget the giant girl-shaped gap in their homework brainstorming sessions, or learning questionable jinxes, or snacking on magical sweets. Ominis eventually confessed to what he'd had to do over summer – and what he would do to keep you safe.
"Very noble of you," Sebastian said, the wide, open walls of the Undercroft echoing his voice. "But you didn't have a choice."
"I did." Ominis shot at the dummy, again and again, to channel his frustration. "I chose to hurt that Muggle. I chose to cause them pain. And I couldn't have done it if I didn't want to."
"What else were you supposed to do then? Let your family hurt you again?"
"I should have! What I did to that Muggle... they're probably dead now..."
"Your family would've killed them regardless."
"That doesn't make it better!"
Sebastian yanked Ominis' shoulder, obliging him to stop, to listen. "You're being ridiculous. Your family forced you to hurt that Muggle. Now you're going to self-destruct an entire friendship because of them?"
Anguished panic stripped his insides raw, but he fought to contain it. "If they'll do that to some random person they found on the street, think what they'll do to her! My family isn't like yours, Sebastian. I can't risk Peregrine Malfoy telling on me. I won't."
Sebastian let out a singular, dark chuckle. "Don't you worry about Pretentious Perry. I'll sort him out." He exhaled, softening. "You ignoring Gibby isn't going to do anything but make you both upset. She's tenacious, and too loyal to us. She's just going to keep demanding an explanation until we give her one."
"Then she's going to be disappointed for a long time. Tell her whatever it takes to keep her away from me."
"You can't—" Sebastian let out a frustrated grunt. "You can't make me the mediator between you two."
Ominis turned back to the dummy. "I'm not asking you to. I don't care if you want to be her friend, but I won't. For her sake."
"Yeah? And what about yours?"
Ominis didn't have an answer for that.
He did manage to avoid you all autumn term. An excruciatingly difficult task, because teachers often paired the two of you together now – your chaos matching Ominis' order perfectly well. But he was cold to you, callous when you pried, outright mean when you demanded. You were as tenacious and loyal as Sebastian warned though. No matter what Ominis said, how rude he was, you never gave in.
Eventually the cold shoulder was all he could give emotionally. He was tired of drawing from the hatred that welled inside him, and turning it on you.
Over Christmas that year, Sebastian invited Ominis to stay with his family in Feldcroft, and Ominis agreed. So did the Gaunts, who knew the Sallows, albeit poor, to be a well-bred family, though perhaps less aware of Sebastian's more radical opinions on Muggles and Muggle-borns. It was good to see Anne, too – even sick, weak, body breaking down piece by piece by the curse, she was spirited and stubborn and filled the feminine void that was missing between him and Sebastian.
But she wasn't you. She could never replace you.
"Have you heard from Gibby?" she asked on one of her good days, when Solomon Sallow was mucking out the horses. She was tucked in bed still, wrapped in thick cloths and furs whilst the boys played Gobstones by the foot of her bed. "I miss her enthusiasm for Muggle sweets."
Before Ominis could speak, Sebastian declared, pouring on the smarminess, "They're not talking anymore."
"Oh?" Her curiosity was directed at Ominis. "Why?"
"We fell out," Ominis said through a clenched jaw, hoping his tone was enough to quiet Sebastian. "Nothing else to it."
"You and Gibby? Falling out? What did you do wrong?"
"Why do you assume it's my fault?"
"Because Gibby would sooner stake her own heart than argue with you."
Neither twin pressed, so Ominis didn't answer. Later that week, however, her prodding questions changed to sympathetic disagreement, and he suspected Sebastian gave her enough information to infer his reasoning. Unfortunately, Anne's thoughts on the matter aligned with her brother's, and though she frequently tried to convince Ominis of this fact, most of the time he couldn't stand to listen to it, and he simply walked out of the house.
She would never understand his decision. They did not have his family.
When Ominis returned to Hogwarts for the spring term, however, knowing Anne was partly right about leaving you in this middling state, he resolved no longer to hide behind feeble excuses. Sebastian was slowly seeking solace in the Dark Arts, something Ominis rejected vehemently, but even then there was safety with Sebastian's status that there never was for you.
He had to protect you by any means necessary. That meant it was time to end the friendship for good.
So it wasn't surprising when, on the first day back, he entered the Undercroft and found you standing there.
"Colloportus!"
The lock behind him clicked, the grille sealing shut. This infuriated him to no end – four years and your naivety still preceded you.
"You know I can cast Alohomora—?"
"Expelliarmus!"
The wand flew from his grasp, clattering somewhere to his left.
"That was excessive."
"Was it?" you challenged, coming up to him. Strawberry laces. "You've had the whole of Christmas to think about what a meater you've been, and I'm not going to let you start the silent treatment again."
Meater. Context was a useful thing at filling in Muggle-vocabulary-shaped gaps.
"How did you find this place?" he asked.
"I followed you, last term, when you were not talking to me."
"Why don't, for once, Gibby," he snarled, "you mind your own business?"
"You are my business!" you yelled – and there it was, the first inkling of pain. "Last year you were my best friend. You and Sebastian, and Anne too. Now she's sick and I haven't seen her in months, you refuse to talk to me and Sebastian won't tell me why!"
Ominis pushed out a laugh and ran a hand through his hair. Sebastian had done a terrible job at warding you away. Yes, you had spent more time with other people in your year, like Adelaide and Evangeline and Arthur, and Garreth, Leander and Cressida and even the new girl, Natsai Onai. But still you crawled back to him.
"Like I said, it's not your business."
"I'm not accepting that answer."
"It's the only answer you're getting."
"Is it me?" you flung out. "Did I say something wrong? Did you get fed up with me copying your homework? Or showing Natty around? I know you pretend to despise everyone in that house. Or maybe it's personal? Have I been annoying? Do I smell bad?"
You never smell bad. He opened his hand. "Give my wand back, Gibby."
To your credit, when he asked for the thing that helped him make sense of the world, you retrieved it, no resistance, and placed it into his waiting palm. The brief touch sent a pleasant, unwanted current tingling through his skin.
"Is it family?"
Ominis snatched his hand away. "No."
"It is. It must be. You stayed at Feldcroft all Christmas." You softened. "You know you can tell me anything—"
"Butt out, Gibby."
"Ominis—"
"No. Listen to me, because I'm only going to say this once. I'm tired of picking up the pieces after you. I'm tired of your clumsiness and your stupidity. I'm tired of holding your hand and coddling you. This world is cruel, and since you haven't learnt it yet, maybe you will now. You don't need me, and I certainly don't need you. So leave me alone." Then the word slipped out, unbidden. "Mudblood."
Your gasp was drawn out, a long inhale that sucked all the light over an arid horizon. Ominis immediately regretted it. He'd caused that Muggle physical pain, he'd been a silent bystander as you fell off that tree in third year, but emotional pain, the crossing of a line that could never be turned back upon, the shattering of your heart into pieces no spell could mend... that was worse than any Cruciatus Curse.
"T-Take that back," you demanded, holding back a sob. "Y-You take that b-back, right now!"
He didn't. All he did was turn around and cast the Unlocking charm. The grille lifted.
You sniffled. Tears splattered onto the stone. In that moment, your sweetness had been stolen, your brightness dimmed. All because of him.
"You're a beast, Ominis Gaunt," you yelled as the lift churned into motion. "I wish I'd never met you!"
And he left you there, knowing you were right.

Sam promised herself that she'd focus on Tara and the gang first before learning to let new people in again in her life. That promise was made when they all moved to New York after the murders in Woodsboro. After Richie. A betrayal like that is a valid reason for her to be closed off and be suspicious of anyone her sister or her friends meet. The same could be said for Quinn, Ethan, Anika, and everyone else she had met when they were introduced to her. Sam did warm up to the three the longer they stayed. She felt a little more comfortable with them when her gut told her that maybe they were genuine people. But she still almost kept to herself. She almost didn't have any friends outside them other than Danny their neighbor next door.
Being the oldest and mother figure of the group meant she worked for her and Tara's share of rent and other needs. Even though their mother sends money for bills and such, Sam wanted to work still. Though she knew what she get weren't much it didn't hurt to start saving her own money. So she worked to keep herself busy but not too much to not acknowledge that she was suffering such a mental scar from the attacks. One of those jobs was in a diner a few blocks near them. It paid okay and the staff are kind but Sam rarely bothered to get too close to them. All she ever knew from them is that they were willing to offer a smile and small conversation.
Usually, she takes the morning shifts, other times she takes the graveyard ones. You can pretty much figure out which shift she preferred over the other.
The regulars were introduced to her on her first shift by Dale, the main cook. There was a couple, John and Amy, who was always on time in the morning and order eggs and toast only with two refills of drip. Rex is a sculptor who mostly sits in the corner and has a few sketches by the table with him, only ordering an omelet with ketchup. There's also a programmer named Adrian who gets a lot of coffee and a BLT at night. Sometimes his friend Ben joins in with fries. A young woman named Adelaide who works from home and is always on the phone while she ate her waffles and vanilla milkshake. Adelaide would go by the mornings if she wakes up early or comes by near the evening when she could.
Lastly, there was Y/N. Sam has figured before that she looked around the same age as her. Cate mentioned when she was teaching her around that she's been here way before her and she pretty much knew everyone in the diner. She was mostly in the morning with a few files in her hand. She's an assistant in an independent law firm. There were times that she came by night and read some of the files she had all the while taking a sip of her joe now and then, other moments she was taking notes for a case assignment that her boss told her to take a look for him. Sam always gets a warm greeting from her as she did with everyone else when she enters the diner and interacts with her whenever deemed necessary. She thought she was too nice to be true.
"You from New York?" Y/N asks her as Sam fills her mug and couldn't help but doubt for a second if she were going to be honest or not,
Y/N always had a keen eye. She liked watching everyone else and let the world work. That meant she liked observing the customers that enter the diner every now and then, noticing how John always drink his coffee slowly to match Amy's pace and always offers an extra toast to her. How Adelaide sometimes start scribbling on her tissues while she talked to her boyfriend who she assumed lived away from New York. The fidgeting Cate does when she's serving Rex and giggles a little when she talks to him. Y/N could see how tired Sam was even when she had just started her shift a few moments ago. The neatness of her diner clothes, layers of makeup, and fake smile couldn't mask the exhaustion the woman has felt for who knows how long. She didn't want to pry about anyone's story so she tries to offer what she only can to someone who deems her a stranger, kindness. It doesn't hurt to treat anyone fairly.
"No, not from around here. I'm just trying to start over." She answers half-heartedly, trying not to give away any information about her at all. Sam sees a gentle smile from her and she couldn't help but feel the burning sensation on her cheeks.
"I wish you well for that. Everyone deserves a restart." And with that, Y/N thanked her for refilling her.
Those were one of many encounters Sam had with her. There were times Y/N would order 2 cups of coffee for her to share with anyone on the staff and reluctantly Sam accepted her third request at the random times she offered. She was beyond suspicious. Her doubt was understandable given the fact that she went through a lot that broke her sense of trust in anyone. But her cautiousness was only met with a tender conversation. Y/N would always ask how she is and the first and ever personal information she has ever given to anyone outside her family was her. Sam vaguely talked about how Tara has been slowly losing interest in seeking help and acting like nothing happened. Of course, there are a few changes here and there to make it seem like a normal rant about her younger sister and Y/N listened intently to her.
Or maybe it was because she was too distracted by the beauty of the older Carpenter sister.
Those seeming doe eyes that hid too many secrets.
Another night shift has come and to Sam's discomfort, she had to be at work. She just came from therapy and her second doctor had just given up on her, making her night already more dreadful than it was. And just to top things off the students who have been visiting the diner lately have been making it their job to worsen her night by being obnoxious and gossiping over her. They weren't even trying to keep it down as if they were back in high school and Sam had just stolen the famous girl's ex-boyfriend. Tara had told her the rumors about her and Woodsboro before and she couldn't care less about what a stranger, who wasn't even there, would think. It was the breaking point when one of them spilled their milkshake on her "accidentally". The smug smile the girl wore before she did it was almost too easy to miss but little did they know that Y/N had been watching them silently the entire time. The woman's had enough of their disturbance. She had been gripping on her pen hard to almost split it in half.
"I'm so sorry, miss." The girl in white apologized with a snide tone. Her friends giggle at her antics on the now pink-stained light blue blouse Sam wore. It just happened to be a strawberry milkshake too. Just last week a girl threw her orange juice at her when she was on her way home with dinner. At this point she thought she's collecting all the fruit flavored drinks.
"D-Don't worry, I'll get it cleaned up." Sam begrudgingly states while avoiding her eyes before she went to turn around but stopped when she saw how she almost bumped into someone,
Familiar Chelsea boots stood before her.
"I beg to differ." They hear the person say before the woman realizes who it was.
"And who are you supposed to be? Her friend?" One of them asks cockily to which Y/N smiles at their confidence. She had her sleeves rolled up already, coat resting back in her booth and Dale was waiting for her cue to tag along after she signaled him from her table earlier.
"Didn't your parents ever teach you some manners on gossiping about people you don't know? Let alone the one serving you your meals and minding her damn business?" She had slowly paced past the unmoving Sam Carpenter that watched closely. Both hands rested on the side of their table and her anger was prevalent from the way she carried herself in the scene.
"She's a lying snake and a murdering bitch!" The other one barked from her seat.
"Let me guess, you got that from Reddit? What else are you going to believe next, that Beyonce's part of the Illuminati?" Y/N mocked her statement and that's when Sam realized that she knew about the rumors surrounding her, that she knew some bit of her past.
The girls had been quiet after she pointed out their bullshit. Sam had always seen her be courteous and approachable when she stops by, her smiles almost making her eyes crinkle when waving at them, and treated everyone with reason, but tonight was different. This was a woman who has lost her patience after holding it for so long,
"I'm going to ask you to leave. People like you don't deserve to be served when you treat the servers here like they're nothing." Y/N ordered with her eyes unblinking with focus.
When no one moved, Y/N let Dale handle the rest by approaching the table and the girls scurried fast before they were going to be thrown out by the man who stood almost six feet tall. Sam heard a few yells at the girls to leave the diner when they exited the place and her gaze follows back Y/N who had changed her demeanor. The cook pats her back for her handling the situation and thanks her before he gives Sam a pat as well and comes back to his previous spot. It was then that the woman offered her the unsparing eyes that always looked at her and asks,
"Are you okay?" Sam thought it sounded so sweet, all she could respond was a faint nod. She didn't even comprehend how a bit close she was already to her until a hint of soft vanilla could be smelled from her. Not the kind where it almost smelled artificial like those vape juices, but it was almost authentic. The woman before her then fishes out something out of her back pocket and extended her handkerchief.
"Here. You got an extra blouse, dear?" Another question follows after Sam takes it and started wiping away some of the liquid.
"No, mines in my apartment, and it's a few blocks away," Y/N hears her voice again after it was silenced earlier, "Hey Dale, Peter doesn't mind his servers being out of uniform for a situation like this, right?" She shouts at the cook who was just about to send a plate to Dolly, Sam's partner for the shift tonight.
"Nah, let me handle him when he asks next time. I gotchu Sam." Dale nods their way.
Y/N then started unbuttoning her shirt and it revealed a white tank top underneath her white button-up shirt. Sam knew should be looking away but couldn't even help herself. Her attention was so close on her slightly toned arms until she snapped out of her daze as the woman handed her top, "Here, you can borrow this for now."
Dolly went to grab a mop and started cleaning the rest of the drink on the floor, "I'll take it from here, Sam." She reassures her and Sam was beyond grateful of the people supporting her.
"A-Are you sure?" Sam looks back at Y/N who hasn't fazed.
"Yeah don't worry about it, Sam." She beams.
The Carpenter girl then watched her walk back to her booth like nothing transpired and quietly apologized to the remaining customers she'd passed by before sitting down. But if Y/N was being honest, she was still trying to calm down from the adrenaline. She was well aware that violence was never the option, yet the possibility for things to go south was out there. She never wants to ever resort to that. Sam then finally moved from the spot she was seemingly glued onto since the confrontation and went to change in the staff room. While she was away, Y/N ordered a martini and piña colada instead of finishing her coffee. Caffeine wouldn't help flush away the rush that still lingered. In between changing her top, Sam couldn't help but wonder why someone like Y/N would stand up for her when she barely knew her.
But that thought was pushed aside when she started slipping into the button-up shirt that was handed to her by the very woman she was curious about and a whiff of her scent made its way to her nostrils again. Sam paused for a second to process how addicting Y/N's scent was. Even her damn perfume was almost sweet. After pushing her thoughts away and finishing closing the shirt, she tossed her ruined blouse in her bag and went back out to continue her shift but only to be stopped,
"Hey, I kinda asked Dale to give you a break so... care to sit with me?" Y/N wondered before the drinks she ordered arrived with Dolly winking at her. The woman shyly smiles back at her before she left them alone and dealt with another customer.
"Yeah, I'd… actually like that." Sam settled on the other side of the booth as she slide the glass of martini to her, "Oh, I'm not allowed to drink while on—"
"Take it easy, Sam. You've been through a lot just now so take it. It's on me." She waves off before taking a big sip of her piña colada.
The woman reluctantly takes a decent amount from her glass while Y/N fixes her files that had been slightly scattered on her side of the table. It was the right moment for Sam to finally pop the question,
"You knew?" It came off pretty fast, making Y/N tilt her head.
"About Woodsboro, I mean. I'm sorry that came off harder than intended." Sam clarified her question and apologized for being forward to which Y/N didn't mind.
"That's alright. I've only read two news articles about it but other than that, it's all I know."
"You don't have to tell me about it, Sam. You said you wanted to start fresh, and you don't owe anyone an explanation." Y/N assured her and the Carpenter girl countered, "No, I feel like I can trust you about… all of this." Sam replies before taking a deep breath.
From being the daughter of the original killers in the Woodsboro murders to her seeing visions of her dad in the mirror and being a victim of the ghost face attacks, she spared no details throughout her story, her therapy sessions going almost nowhere because she'd scare them off and Y/N never stopped her flow and listened intently to everything she said. Not even a single sound came out of her mouth as Sam spoke. The only thing she ever offered were observant eyes that watched every move, like how the crease on her forehead slowly increased as she went on or the hint of distaste in her voice when she mentioned her deceased ex-boyfriend. She barely bats an eye when she even admitted that she enjoyed killing him and Amber. Not a single change of muscle movement on her face other than taking a few sips from her drink and blinking now and then.
When Sam finished telling her whole story, she had been anticipating the request for her to leave and never come back, just like the one her psychiatrist said when she told him the truth that afternoon. She had grown to expect that from anyone now. Yet all she heard was an exhale from the woman she shared the table with,
"That's... a lot to take in." She hears her note as she rub her chin,
"I'm sorry you had to go through all that, Sam. You didn't deserve it." Y/N continues with empathetic eyes.
"You don't… feel like the need to push me away?" Sam asks, and for once she feared someone's answer more than anyone else. Almost too afraid that she'd scare Y/N away.
"No, not really." She told nonchalantly.
Sam stared blankly at her as she moved to cross her arms and looked down from her seat. She couldn't tell if she was about to take back her statement or maybe ask her more about the attacks. Yet Y/N was able to catch Sam off guard as she went to finish her martini,
"Not going to lie, those two deserved to die for what they did— I mean… committing murders because your movie franchise sucked? That seems childish, especially for an adult man." Y/N comments on her thoughts, not realizing it made her choke on her drink.
"Oh my god, Sam— are you okay?" She tries to offer her a glass of water though the Carpenter girl waves it off.
"No, no, it's just— you're right their motive seemed childish." A laugh follows, and it makes Y/N smile that she witnesses her being unguarded. She almost felt too lucky that Sam let herself be this vulnerable to her now.
"Thank you, for not turning me away and for always listening," Sam says after calming down.
And Sam meant it. It was nice to be heard and not hated for the first time. She felt safe knowing that she could trust a new person for once. She still has a long way from being able to trust again, but small process is still process.
"You're welcome. You deserve it." The woman says as she leans forward on the table and rested both elbows close to the edge, "If you need someone to talk about... this, I'm always open. No matter what it may be, I won't turn you away." Y/N continues with her signature smile this time.
After that, Sam went on with her shift while Y/N picked back up the papers she had scanned before the confrontation. It's a good thing she noted down her thoughts to remember where she left off and continued looking through some of the witness reports she had brought with her for their recent case. Sam would sometimes steal a few glances from her and offer a small smile whenever she gets caught. That was the moment she started growing more fond of their diner's regular. Each visit felt more special than the last and each offer of coffee breaks has made both of them closer. Whenever Sam wasn't on duty, Y/N would feel a little bored but Sam was able to text her and ask about her day. When there was someone who wanted to talk shit about her, Y/N wouldn't hesitate to spit back at them or push the person when someone throws their drink at her. The Carpenter girl appreciated the gestures and sometimes feels too bad that she gets to be splashed at, but the woman didn't mind. Tara got to meet her one day when she visited Sam to work and hanged out a little just to kill time. She was very skeptical of Y/N at first, but the way her sister eased up around her gave her the impression that she was trustworthy. Sam's trust is hard to earn after all.
The night was about to come, and Sam had just finished her shift when she happen to encounter the person that has been making her days ten times better than she ever expected. Y/N always wore a pantsuit to work, switching from 4 pairs. Today she was wearing the brown one that had a waistcoat and she was killing the style. Sam never gets tired of her presence or the way she always presents herself. She just looked ravishing in a pantsuit. Y/N had her coat neatly folded on her right arm that held folders while her messenger bag rested on her right shoulder. The smile that was so familiar to her greeted Sam Carpenter warmly that she couldn't help but blush,
"Good evening, Miss Carpenter. I'll be your chauffeur for tonight." Y/N announces with an accent. The attempt makes Sam laugh, "If that's your take on a British accent, you need to work more on it." She teased softly, shaking her head.
"C'mon, I'll walk you home." Sam hears her offer and gestured her occupied arm for her to take, which she happily does so.
"How chivalrous of you, Miss Y/L/N. Keep this up, and I might start falling for you." Half of it was a joke, but she was indeed falling for her, harder than Sam even realizes. If only she knew that Y/N had already fallen for her a while now.
She kept herself composed after Sam's teasing. Both of them chatted casually as they walk through the streets of New York. Y/N talked about her day at the office and how their copier was jamming down. It was annoying her and she had to kick it a few times before it worked again. Sam, on the other hand, shared about how a costumer had a screaming match with a date while eating and almost broke things in the diner. Dale was almost livid when the woman raised her plate and was about to throw it at the poor guy. Moments like these were nice for Sam. The life that was just mundane for once and not surrounded by the craziness of her past that still lingers. No screaming stranger threatening her, another flavored drink being thrown her way or a masked psycho trying to kill her, but a quiet night. Laughs were shared, jokes were thrown at each other, and flirts slipped here and there to make it seem like it was nothing. Even if the world around them was a little overwhelming, they were stuck in their own bubble cherishing each other's presence. Y/N was content and she had gathered enough courage until they reached Sam's apartment building. She collected her thoughts and watched her let go of her arm,
"This is me," Sam gestures to the building door, "Thank you for the walk, Y/N. It was... nice." She follows up with a light blush present on her cheeks. She hoped Y/N didn't notice them.
"Yeah, it was." Y/N smiles at her and scratched to back of her head.
"Look, I've been thinking, do you want to grab dinner sometime? You know— like a date. If you don't mind." The woman begins to avoid her brown eyes. Y/N was way too damn shy, and it made the brown girl giggle.
Sam then approaches her and almost closes the gap between them, leaving a peck on her cheek that it made Y/N jump. She turned so red it was almost like she was cherry. It was a first to witness her like this and it made Sam giggle even more as she didn't move away from her spot,
"I don't mind at all. I'm free by 6 pm tomorrow. No need to be fancy or grand, anything cheap would be fine by me." The Carpenter girl move close to her ear to whisper it to her.
Y/N then finally pulls herself together and gathers back the natural courage she had, trying to match Sam's, "6 pm, tomorrow it is then. I'll pick you up here, Carpenter."
She was the one to pull away and she puts back her signature smile before bidding her farewells to her.
"Good night, Sam. Sweet dreams." Y/N smoothly delivers and starts walking back to where they came from earlier.
Sam then watches her walk away and bites her lip. The view was indeed nice to watch. She then covers her face with both hands before giddily smiling at the ground, thinking about what had just happened. Sam thought it felt like high school all over again. That rush in her veins was quite familiar to her. It's been a while since she had it. All she has to do now is prepare for tomorrow and be sure it's perfect. Y/N, on the other hand, skipped through the streets like a little kid as she smiled widely. Few strangers looked at her funny, but everyone else focused to their own world. The papers she thought she'd be working on tonight would probably be forgotten now that the only thing on her mind is their date tomorrow.
Both women looked forward to it.

Though you and Sebastian hadn’t set out to keep secret what had happened between you, you’re genuinely surprised that the news hadn’t spread overnight.
After your desperate, hurried sex following his first match, you’d spent a torturously long time properly discovering each other in the Room’s spacious bath basin. Hours later, you both managed to sneak into the raucous party in Slytherin’s common room with no one the wiser as to what you’d just gotten up to.
Ominis didn’t suspect a thing. Truthfully, what with half the school’s sixth- and seventh-years crammed into the common room and countless mugs of Butterbeer being passed around, he hadn’t noticed you weren’t there from the beginning.
Only Anne seemed suspicious, but she quickly got distracted when she saw Imelda lining up shots of Firewhisky for the Quidditch team. At that point, she determined that whatever it was Sebastian had snuck away to do for the past several hours wasn’t important, because he was about to cause even more trouble.
The next morning you wake well after the rest of your friends, pleasantly sore and content to daydream about Sebastian’s broad hands skimming across your body beneath the warm bathwater until breakfast is nearly over.
You’re less pleased by what you find when you eventually join your housemates in the Great Hall. You quickly learn the only gossip that had proliferated since the party ended is that the newly-muscled Sebastian Sallow is hands-down the best Seeker that Hogwarts has seen in years.
With such a reputation, it’s no surprise that he’s immediately bombarded with attention — especially from your female classmates.
Before you can even walk through the double doors, Anne links her arm through yours and starts to slowly walk you over to the table with an anxious expression on her face.
“Something has happened,” she warns you.
You groan. “Merlin, what now?”
“It’s Sebastian,” she says hesitantly. “Or I suppose if we’re being fair, it’s not him. It’s, well… everyone else.”
You glance over and catch sight of him at the end of the table. No less than half a dozen girls are surrounding him – some of them aren’t even in your house, you realize.
First, you notice that Samantha Dale is seated on his left and Adelaide is on his right, both listening intently and gasping delightedly as he recounts his victory from the previous afternoon.
Their audacity nearly makes you see red. You’ve been nothing but kind to those girls and have personally rescued members of both their families from various magical mishaps. Adelaide is your friend, and now she’s batting their eyelashes at your love right in front of you?
(The fact that you’ve kept your relationship mostly private thus far doesn’t have a chance to cross your mind.)
Then you observe several other Slytherin girls who are crowded onto a narrow section of the bench across the table. They’re leaning in toward Sebastian, ostensibly to hear his retelling, but you can see from halfway down the table that the top buttons of their blouses are conspicuously undone. Worst of all, that harlot Violet McDowell is standing behind him, her hands resting on his shoulders and looking positively smug.
Oh, you’re seething mad.
“I swear, they came out of nowhere,” Anne says nervously. “I went to ask Professor Weasley one question about an assignment and when I came back, they’d descended on him like a flock of jobberknolls. They even took my seat.”
The rational part of your brain finally takes stock of the situation and realizes Sebastian isn’t really doing anything wrong. For a split second, that boyish grin on his face as he waxes poetic about Quidditch reminds you of the man you’d fallen in love with in the first place – eager, earnest, and proud.
You can’t fault him for wanting to talk about his victory.
Don’t forget, he said he loves you, your brain reminds you. Just you.
Still, watching those girls try to monopolize his attention isn’t how you want to spend your morning.
“I think I’m just going to go back to the common room,” you mumble, gently unwinding your arm from Anne’s. “There’s no more room anyway.”
“Wait,” Anne pleads. “Sebastian’s not – he’d want you to stay, he’s been waiting for you all morning.”
You narrow your eyes. “It doesn’t look like he missed me that much.”
“He does,” Anne insists. “He came and told me about the two of you first thing this morning, he was so excited to get to see you. Those girls… he’s just a fascination to them, it doesn’t mean anything.”
You sigh self-consciously, glancing back one last time as Violet bends down to murmur something in Sebastian’s ear that makes him laugh.
“Just tell him he can come find me after he’s done entertaining the court,” you mumble, turning on your heel and storming out.
Sebastian does come to find you later that afternoon while you’re sulking in the library. Anne must have warned him that you were in a foul mood because he comes bearing gifts.
You jump slightly when he sneaks up behind you and murmurs, “Skipping breakfast? That’s not like you.”
You bite your lip and mumble, “Wasn’t hungry.”
“Really?” he asks skeptically, and you can hear the smirk in his voice without even looking at his face. “I thought you would’ve been starved after last night.”
“Sebastian,” you sigh. “I’m trying to study, what do you want?”
“I brought you a pasty,” he says, snagging an empty seat next to you and placing a napkin-wrapped pastry on the table. “Pumpkin.”
You pause jotting down notes from your book on magic theory, interestedly eyeing up Sebastian’s offering.
“Eat it,” he insists with a cheeky grin. “Lunch isn’t for hours, and I wanted to see if you’d like to take a walk with me.”
You unwrap the pasty and tear off a piece. “A walk?”
“Or I can study with you,” he offers. “Whatever you want, I just…”
He reaches over and takes your unoccupied hand in his as he murmurs, “I want to spend today with you.”
Truly, how can you be mad at him when he’s this lovely?
“Somewhere just us,” you bargain. “Without all the girls that want a piece of ‘Sebastian Sallow, Quidditch god.’”
He makes a displeased face. “They’re shameless. I told them I wasn’t interested as soon as I realized they didn’t actually care how many kilometers per hour I can fly.”
“I care,” you mumble, and Sebastian’s brilliant smile makes your stomach flip nervously.
“I know you do, and that’s why I love you,” he says, tipping your chin up so he can steal a sweet kiss, which quickly becomes more heated than is generally accepted in the library.
When he pulls away, he gives you a very pointed look. “Room of Requirement?”
“Room of Requirement,” you agree, scooping up your books and your half-eaten pasty as you both make a hasty exit.

With Quidditch practice eating up so much of Sebastian’s free time, you find yourself spending more and more time with Anne and Ominis as you study for your N.E.W.T.s. It’s in one of these study sessions that Anne reveals that she’s been studying independently with Nurse Blainey to master the science of healing magic.
“She’s a bit gruff, but she was always kind to me when I was first cursed,” she tells you. “And she’s got a brilliant mind for healing spells — she’s even studied at St. Mungo’s!”
As soon as you take a cursory look through Anne’s notes, you find yourself utterly enthralled. It’s not until several days later that you realize your ancient magic abilities could make you uniquely well-suited for such a discipline.
You write to Nurse Blainey straight away to ask her to take you on as a pupil as well.
An outbreak of dragon pox among Hufflepuff third years keeps her overwhelmed for nearly two weeks, but eventually, she invites you to her office to discuss your questions.
“Now then,” Nurse Blainey starts as she peers over a neat stack of Professor Fig’s old notes. “Can you tell me more about this ‘ancient magic’ ability of yours?”
“Y-yes,” you stammer nervously. “Well, er... I don’t think I can tell you where it comes from, because I’m not really sure myself. But I can sort of…”
You trail off and lift your hands from your lap. Bright, blue sparks emanate from your fingertips as your hands softly glow, and several of the picture frames on Nurse Blainey’s desk begin to levitate.
“Merlin’s beard,” she gasps. “Wandless magic?”
“I can use it with my wand as well,” you explain. “And… It seems to be generative.”
Her brow furrows. “I was reading about that in Eleazar’s notes, but I’m not quite sure I understand what he was getting at.”
You sigh and square your shoulders before you begin to explain the whole story: how Isadora Morganach used her abilities to extract pain — and eventually all feelings — from others, and how she used that power to create reserves of ancient magic.
By the time you explain how Isadora’s relentless efforts eventually led to her death, Nurse Blainey looks shaken.
“Am I to understand,” she asks softly, “that your abilities may allow you to extract pain from others?”
“Possibly,” you confirm. “But that’s not why I’ve come to you.”
She nods for you to continue, and gently you admit, “I want to learn if I can use my magic to treat pain, and perhaps even heal it — but not remove it.”
Nurse Blainey takes a moment to collect her thoughts, flicking through Fig’s notes once more.
“My dear,” she murmurs. “May I ask why, given the chance, someone with an ability like yours would not elect to simply remove pain entirely?”
Carefully you answer, “A very wise professor once told me that there cannot be light without darkness, and that having the ability to remove that kind of pain doesn’t necessarily mean one should.”
“I see,” she whispers.
“But — but perhaps I can use my ability to offer relief,” you suggest. “Not to extract anything, but… to give.”
Finally, Nurse Blainey smiles, folding her hands on her lap while she sits back contemplatively.
“I must admit, I’ve never seen such an ability before and I’ve no idea where to begin,” she admits. “But if you’re interested in further study of healing magic, I’d be delighted to work with you.”

Climbing all the way up to the Room of Requirement after one of his weekend Quidditch practices must be excruciating for Sebastian, you think.
After practice, he’s usually sore just about everywhere – from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet, he positively aches. Having seen him in action, you know that he’ll often race upwards of a hundred kilometers on his broom simply doing laps around the pitch and tracking down the school’s enchanted practice Snitches.
To make matters worse, he’s forced to skip breakfast to be at the pitch by sun-up on strict orders from his captain, who goes on to keep the team well past eleven o’clock. Now he must be starving, but if you know your love, he’ll steadfastly ignore the temptation to go straight to the Great Hall for lunch and instead make the trek up to the seventh-floor corridor.
That’s precisely why you’re waiting for him there.
In the mornings when he has practice, you like to treat yourself to a bit of a lie-in and lazily wait around for his return so you can have lunch together. You would be happy to meet him downstairs when he returns to the castle, but lately, Anne and Ominis have protested whenever Sebastian joins the lunch table straight from practice still flushed, sweating, and covered in mud from the waist down.
Thus, Sebastian usually decides to be a gentleman and change first.
In the months since the start of Quidditch season and Sebastian’s first overnight stay in the Room of Requirement, he’s slowly started bringing in his belongings until he’d effectively moved out of the dormitories and into a shared nest with you. Most of his clothes were there by now, along with his endless piles of library books and his cherished personal collection of sporting novellas from Tomes and Scrolls.
You assume he’ll probably want to strip off his mucked-up robes and find something clean to change into so he can escort you downstairs for lunch. But despite the exhausting morning he must have already had, you don’t feel quite enough pity for your Sebastian to take it easy on him when he finally arrives.
Besides, you’re hoping to convince him (or perhaps seduce him) to let you test one of your newfound skills.
When he enters the room, he finds you lounging on the bed reading one of his beloved novels – wearing nothing but one of his Quidditch jerseys.
“Sebastian!” you call out happily as you look up.
“Morning, sweetheart,” he answers as he pushes the heavy door closed.
“You’re finally free,” you joke, closing your book. “I thought I’d have to come down to the pitch soon and challenge Imelda to a duel to get her to set you loose.”
“I won’t mind seeing that,” he laughs. “That would have been quite chivalrous of you.”
He shrugs out of his Quidditch robes and pulls his soaking-wet shirt up over his head. You watch longingly as his core flexes – all those hours on a broom have made him exceptionally well-defined, and you wish you could simply get on your knees right then and there to spend your morning tracing your tongue over every delineated band of muscle.
“You know,” he teases, pulling you from your reverie. “I had planned to just put on a clean shirt to go down to lunch, but it seems you’ve nicked my spare.”
“Did I?” you say, feigning innocence. “I just grabbed the first thing I could find, I swear.”
Sebastian glances at you skeptically before sitting down at what has become “his” desk to take off his boots. You frown when you catch him wincing while he bends at the waist.
“Are you hurt?” you ask him softly.
“No,” he insists. “Just sore all over.”
“Bash,” you croon. “Poor babe.”
“Come off it, I’m fine,” he laughs. “I just need some food and a nice long bath and I’ll be grand.”
You climb off the bed and saunter over to him in his chair, appreciating the way his eyes skim across the hem of his pilfered jersey. With every step, your hips sway and tease him with quick glimpses of the tops of your bare legs.
“Are you sure?” you ask sweetly. “Because if you’re feeling poorly, I can take care of you.”
Not even the promise of dry clothes and a warm meal could pull Sebastian’s attention from such a tempting offer – especially not while you’re wearing his clothes.
He sits back in his chair while you kneel in front of him to carefully unlace his Quidditch boots. After you take off his pads as well, it’s just too easy to climb onto his lap and wind your arms around his shoulders.
Sebastian’s gaze dips down to the space between your legs. He lays one palm flat against your thigh and uses his thumb to ruck up the hem of the jersey just a bit.
“You haven’t got anything on under this, do you?” he asks knowingly.
“Not a stitch,” you breathe.
Sebastian groans quietly and wraps an arm around your waist to hold you tightly against him.
“Leave it on,” he says in a low voice. “I want to see you in my jersey the entire time I’m taking you apart.”
“Not so fast, Sallow,” you counter. “Let me give you a massage first, it will help with the soreness.”
“A ‘massage?’” he asks hopefully.
When you merely raise an eyebrow at him, he looks simply crushed.
“You’re joking,” he says flatly. “You… you actually mean to ‘take care’ of me? In an actual ‘nurse-me-back-to-health’ sort of way? Nothing lewd?”
“I mean both the regular way and the devious way,” you laugh. “But if you’re aching right now, it’s not going to be much fun for you.”
“You are sincerely wrong about that,” he argues, but you’re undeterred.
“Let me do this first,” you bargain. “I promise you’ll feel better afterward.”
There’s a bit more whining and attempts to seduce you as you wriggle free of Sebastian’s lap and tug on his arm so he’ll walk over to the bed. He strips down to the garment layer he wears beneath his uniform pants and kindly allows you to shove him onto the bed.
He’s peering up at you expectantly, obviously hoping you’ll cave and climb onto his lap once again.
“Turn over, Sebastian,” you say with a fond eye roll. “On your stomach.”
“You’re evil,” he gripes. “A wicked, malicious sorceress.”
Sebastian reluctantly turns over onto his stomach so that you can sit astride his hips. As soon as you rest your weight on top of him, he exhales tiredly as if he’s just set down a towering stack of books at the librarian’s desk – like he’s let go of a weight he hadn’t realized had slowly become so burdensome in his arms.
“Relax,” you murmur. “I’ve got you.”
Then he tilts his head to rest on his folded hands. You know he can’t quite see you at this angle, but you still catch just a glimpse of his warm brown eyes before they flutter shut.
Go on, he says without words. Touch me. I trust you.
You think you could just stay here all day with your hands on his slightly chilled skin. Warming him up to your touch, you skim your hands across his firm shoulder blades, along the tops of his sun-kissed shoulders, and then down the solid expanse of aching muscle in his back. He’s so broad beneath you, you think, even on his stomach. Without his height to add to the imposing figure he usually cuts, he nevertheless looks perfectly capable of rolling you off of him should he desire.
Knowing that there’s very little he could desire less sends an excited shiver through you. It’s a privilege, getting to be gentle with a man like Sebastian.
After all, except for when his hands are on your body, Sebastian is anything but gentle. He’s headstrong, impulsive, and obstinately ungovernable when he knows he’s in the right. Physically, he’s grown into a body that matches.
You shouldn’t be surprised that despite playing as a Seeker, Sebastian is not the kind of athlete who relies on being lithe and quick on his broom. Whenever he finds himself in a dead heat for the Snitch, he routinely throws his whole body into a maneuver and hurdles himself into his opposing Seeker to knock them off their path.
He’s brutish on the pitch and offers no apologies for it, though he will extend a gentlemanly hand whenever he bests the other Seeker to their prize.
Worst of all is that he has no fear of mutually assured destruction. He wants to win, sure; but more importantly, he wants the other team to lose. If that means both he and his opponent must crash into the ground in a pile of torn sports robes and grass stains before being hauled up to the Hospital Wing by an exasperated Nurse Blainey, so be it.
(Needless to say, you aren’t the only one who calls him “Bash” anymore.)
You consider all this while you quietly work through some of the larger knots that have built up in the muscles of his back. His body has kept hold of a momentous amount of trauma over the years, and if you can help dissolve even a fraction of it with your hands, you’ll be overjoyed.
Carefully you splay the palms of your hands against his bare skin and concentrate hard on spreading warmth and relaxation through the striations of Sebastian’s muscles. Just as you’d practiced with Nurse Blainey, you visualize your magic wrapping through the infinitely small tears and bruises he’s endured to diffuse a relief that emanates a warm, purplish glow you can genuinely see.
(You’d managed to close a simple paper cut earlier that week, but Sebastian’s body has taken a more significant beating.)
“What’s happening?” Sebastian asks, his voice slurring.
“How do you feel?” you whisper.
“Incredible,” he breathes. “Are you…? Is this magic that you’re doing? Your ancient magic?”
“I’m not exactly sure,” you admit softly. “Healing magic, ancient magic… It’s a bit of both.”
“How did you–?” Sebastian asks before trailing off in a lazy, satisfied moan. “Merlin, it feels good.”
“Anne’s been showing me some of the healing magic she’s studying with Nurse Blainey, so I’ve joined her,” you say softly. “It’s actually quite interesting, Anne is very talented with–”
“No more talking about Anne for a little while, love,” Sebastian grits out. “Just – just keep doing whatever it is you’re doing. Please.”
You giggle softly while you slide your hands down further to the base of his spine, where you know for a fact he carries an unjust amount of tension. It’s precisely there that he stores his worries about upcoming N.E.W.T. exams, his all-important role on the Quidditch team, and the pressure he puts on himself to succeed so he can take care of Anne once you all graduate – you too, now, even though you insist you’ll be equals in every way possible.
“Feeling a bit better?” you ask him hopefully.
“Can’t remember the last time I felt this good,” he mumbles. “You should be a Healer.”
“Maybe someday,” you demur. “For now, I rather like the idea of only doing this for you.”
Sebastian’s soft groan sounds like one of assent.
You channel magic through him for a few more moments until you notice that he finally feels less inflamed beneath your fingertips. Then you let the glow fade away until it’s just you and Sebastian, no more magic thrumming between where your bodies touch.
He’s quiet for several long moments and you wonder whether you might have simply magicked him to sleep.
“Bash?” you whisper. “Are you alright?”
All of a sudden, he’s remarkably alive beneath you. He tilts one hip to tip you off of his back and onto the bed beside him, earning an annoyed huff out of you when you land on your rear. But before you can put the words together to protest, he’s parting your legs with his hands so he can settle between them and rucking up the jersey until he can see your bare core.
“You’re incredible,” he tells you earnestly. “I feel better than I have in months, love.”
“Th-that’s good,” you stutter, a bit bewildered.
He continues, “And I’m going to return the favor right this minute.”
You barely have time to blink before he’s kissing you breathless and rocking his hips against yours. You gasp sharply into his mouth and he swallows the sound, pressing his tongue against yours in that filthy way that he knows gets you soaking wet for him every single time he does it.
“Bash,” you whine. “Slow down a little.”
“Not a chance,” he says against your neck. “I want you, you made me need you.”
…Merlin, did you?
You try to focus while Sebastian stretches out the collar of his own jersey to suck claiming bruises along your collarbone. Did you overdo it on the healing spell? Possibly imbue him with a little too much “love?”
But then he confesses, “You’re irresistible in my clothes like this, d’you know that?”
You breathe a sigh of relief when you realize that that’s what’s got him so worked up. It’s you in his colors, his rumpled clothing with his damn name emblazoned on your back.
That quickly gives you an idea.
“Let me turn over,” you grunt as you try to squirm out from underneath him. “Sebastian, please.”
He looks thoroughly displeased when you sit up, so you placate him with one more filthy kiss before he won’t have access to your mouth for a while. Then you settle on your elbows and knees, jersey shoved up to the middle of your waist.
Sebastian says some foul words under his breath when he sees you present yourself for him. You wish he’d just bury himself in you, patience and preparation be damned. Together the two of you have discovered that there’s a time and a place for slow, intimate lovemaking just as much as there is for desperate, urgent, feral fucking.
You know which one Sebastian is craving.
“Take me like this, Bash,” you say breathlessly. “So you can see whose name I carry.”
He leans over you and drags his hand across the “SALLOW” stitched in thick, white letters across the broadest part of the jersey’s shoulders. Then he lets out a noise that sounds suspiciously like a growl as he grinds his hips against yours.
“I need to be inside you,” he grunts. Behind you, you can hear him shoving his base layer down his thighs before he drags two fingertips along your slit and uses your wetness to stroke his cock. “I can’t be patient.”
“Don’t be,” you insist. You sway your hips invitingly and arch your back. “I’m ready.”
“You need my fingers,” he tells you. “I’ll give you enough, I won’t hurt you.”
You stun him by reaching a hand back and showing him how you can press two fingers against your entrance that easily sink inside. You moan softly at how different the angle is from how you usually touch yourself, but it works to get the point across to Sebastian.
“I’m ready,” you repeat. “I was waiting for you.”
Sebastian traces a thumb along your slit beside your fingers, pulling you open a bit to let himself look his fill as you spread your wetness around wantonly.
“Is this what you were doing while I was at practice?” he asks. “Laying in this bed in my clothes, playing with your pussy, and thinking of what I’d do to you when I got back?”
Now that’s a word he most certainly picked up from those Muggle books he likes to read, but it makes you squirm desperately nonetheless.
“Yes,” you whimper. “B-but I waited for you to finish.”
“That’s a shame,” he murmurs. “I suppose I’ll have to make sure you’re properly seen to, since you’ve been waiting so long.”
He presses his thumb against your entrance with your two fingers and when you can easily take it inside as well, he decides you’re indeed plenty ready for his cock instead. His gentle hand on your wrist coaxes you into pulling out, and then he lines himself up and starts to press inside.
You whimper his name as you collapse onto your elbows. He feels impossibly big like this, and despite your insistence that you were ready for him, it’s a toe-curling kind of stretch that has you panting and trembling beneath him while your body alternates between its animal instincts to rear back or submit.
“Good, you take me so well, love,” he groans. “How do you feel?”
In answer, you loudly groan into the pillow you’ve bunched up beneath you.
“Sounds like you’re enjoying yourself,” he says smugly. “Hold on tight for me, alright?”
After a few easy thrusts to ensure you’re properly braced for the full weight of him, Sebastian starts to relentlessly pound you down into the mattress. He supports you with his forearm wrapped beneath your hips and one broad hand pressing into your back – right below where his name is inscribed.
You’re fiercely loud in bed with him, but even when you’re whining and nearly sobbing for him, you can’t drown out the sound of his foul mouth.
“Take this cock,” he grunts. “Take it all, it’s what you wanted, right? For me to fill you up?”
“Yes!” you wail, knowing he expects an answer.
“That’s right,” he growls. “You want it all, I’ll give it all to you, always.”
He leans over your back and grinds in deep and you feel a twinge that isn’t entirely pleasure, but you wouldn’t dare ask him to stop – it’s too good, especially when it’s straddling the line of being too much.
“I’m gonna give you everything,” he confesses into your ear. “My seed, my name on your back, I’ll give you anything you want.”
“Give it to me,” you slur. “Go on, Bash.”
“I will love, I will,” he grunts. “But I’m finishing you first.”
He keeps murmuring filth into your ear while he works a hand underneath you to rub quick, firm circles against your clit the way he knows you like. He talks about how sweet you are for him, how you’re the best thing he has, how he wants to keep you right here for as long as you’ll let him, but whether he means in this bed or in his arms you can’t possibly know.
He deftly works you to a breathtaking climax – quite literally you lose your breath, and he just keeps drawing it out with his eager fingers and his cock buried deep in you for so long that you wonder when it will ever stop. When it finally relents, you rest your cheek against the pillow and lie boneless, content to let Sebastian hold your hips up so he can work himself toward his finish.
“Want you to keep it all inside,” he says mindlessly. “Keep it in, keep my jersey on too, fuck–”
When he spills in you, he grinds his sensitive cock against your hips for as long as he can take it to make sure you stay full of his spend. Then when he pulls out, he tucks that damn jersey back down over your ass as if to make the claim, Our work here is done.
You lay exhausted on your stomach while Sebastian cozies up behind you. Within minutes of catching your breaths his stomach growls, so you know you won’t be there for much longer, but neither of you seems to be in any hurry to untangle yourself from the other.
Eventually, you have to ask him, “...So, ‘my name on your back,’ hmm?”
You expect him to blush and stammer, or start talking about how maybe, someday, when he feels like he’s satisfied some sort of ridiculous goal that will make him feel like he deserves it, that could be a reality.
Instead, he kisses behind the hinge of your jaw and murmurs, “I meant it. Whenever you want it, it’s yours. Just say the word.”
“Fine, but if I get the name, I get to keep the jersey,” you sigh.
He buries his nose in your hair and happily mumbles, “I think we’ll have to negotiate that one.”

Matt has a secret. He sees ghosts. Well, one ghost, specifically. He’s grown completely infatuated with her, if you can believe it.
Adelaide died a very long time ago. 1899 to be precise. She has been trapped in this house since her death, she has no idea why. She found out that Matt could see her when the boy was only eleven years old. Now, the eighteen year old is utterly obsessed with the 125 year old spirit.
Adelaide first started speaking to Matt through dreams and thoughts, on his eleventh birthday, when he was about to fall asleep, he heard “Happy birthday, sweet child”, he opened his eyes and there she was. In a gorgeous Victorian style dress, a light blue that made her eyes stand out beautifully. He wasn’t even scared, he felt oddly calm by this new presence. She gave him this sense of comfort that he’d never felt before.
It didn’t take long for Matt to fully understand that Adelaide was a ghost. Although she hates that word, she doesn’t know what to be called, but she knows that “ghost” isn’t on the list.
Which brings us to today. Matt is sat up in bed, way past the usual time he goes to bed, his nose buried inside a book he found in the attic a few days ago when Adelaide enters the room.
“Hey, you’re earlier than usual” He smiles as he closes the book and puts it in his lap.
“I was tired of waiting” The girl shrugs as she sits on the edge of his bed. “What are you reading?”
“Oh, I found it up in the attic when we were having that clear out..”
“May I?” she holds her hand out for him to pass her the book. she opens the cover and reads the writing. her face softens. “This was mine…”
“It was? how did-“
“That’s my handwriting in here, my name, all of it… I remember this book, I read it religiously”
Matt changes the subject slightly. “Can I ask you a question?.”
“Of course” she places the book down next to her on the bed gently.
“How old were you when you… died?”
“I was nineteen”
His eyebrows raised, he wasn't expecting her to be that young.
"So young," he mumbled to himself. after a moment of silence, she changed the subject.
“Don’t you have a paper for your history class due to be finished soon?”
Matt looks over at the open notebook and laptop sitting on his desk waiting for him to start his assignment. “Yeah.. right. I forgot”
“How about I help you… I’ve seen plenty of history. What is it about?”
Matt sighs as he drags himself off his bed and towards his desk, he sits down in front of it and switches his laptop on.
“I have to write about a previous owner of my house… Everyone is going to have war stories but nobody lived in this house before us since like 1930… I’ve contacted people but they haven’t replied…”
Adelaide sits down on the edge of the desk. “Isn’t there anybody else that you could speak to?” That question sparks an idea.
“Hey, what about you? I mean you said that your family was the first people to own this place… could I write about you?”
“Me? What would you even write about me?”
Matt looks nervous to ask his next question.
“Could I… talk about… how you died maybe?”
“You want to know how I died?”
“Please..? If you don’t want it in my assignment that’s totally understandable but… I do want to know.”
“I’m afraid to tell you…” The spirit speaks with a large amount of uncertainty in her voice.
“Why?”
Adelaide sighs deep, seemingly troubled by the thought of telling Matt of her death.
“I believe that you can still see it… once you learn of a spirits story, of their death, you see the cause. Almost like an illusion… Do you understand that?”
He immediately tensed up, his stomach twisting into painful knots. He didn’t want to see whatever horrific scene it was. He didn’t want to see Adelaide dead, but he also wanted to know more.
He shut his eyes, silently consenting to it.
“So if you tell me how you died, I’d be able to see it?”
“Yes. and I don’t want you to see me like that…”
“Please? It won’t change how I feel about you.. What if you’re like super vague and I fill in the gaps?”
“But you’ll see me like it forever…”
He let out a shaky breath, trying to stay calm. Matt knew what he was about to see would forever be ingrained into his memory.
"I.... I don't care," he replied through clenched teeth.
Adelaide sighs, giving in. “Alright…”
Matt perks up in his seat, bracing himself ready to hear the story.
“When I was nineteen, I fell ill. Terribly ill. My sister took care of me, I slowly grew… they said that I grew insane but I don’t believe that. I believe it’s that word you’ve mentioned before.. when you’re very very sad…”
“Depressed?” Matt questions, he feels a pang in his chest when he hears her reply
“Yes, depressed. I believe that was what happened to me.”
“Did you die from your illness?”
“No…” Another hit to his heart.
“Then… How?”
Adelaide takes a long pause, preparing herself for retelling this story.
“My mother found me, in my washroom… I had stolen a knife from my dinner-“
Before she can continue, Matt feels a chill through his body, a single word is forced into his mind. “lies”.
“That’s not true is it? You didn’t-”
“I don’t remember my death, I remember walking to the washroom but that’s all.. Everybody said that I did it myself.”
He feels the same shiver and the same word pushes into his mind. Matt realises that he can’t see any difference in Adelaide’s appearance he looked up at her in pure confusion, his eyebrows furrowed.
"I don’t see anything," he mumbled, looking around the room. "I-I thought I would've seen something by now..."
“It’s talking to you isn’t it?”
“What is?”
“The house… It remembers every core event that occurred in its walls. Especially the tragedies, everything. It’s telling you different isn’t it?”
“Y-yes.. it is- how is that possible?”
“I haven’t a clue… But it’s fascinating isn’t it?”
Matt let’s out a huff of a laugh “You love that word.. fascinating.. You say it a lot”
“You show me a lot of fascinating things…”
“How does the house remember your death, Adelaide?”
“It tells me that I was wrongly medicated. My sister was the one who took charge of my medication. The house believes that she lethalised my doses in order to keep me ill. Until I realised that I could communicate with this house, I thought that I had used that knife on myself, the house tells me that it was my sister, to keep the blame far away from her…”
Matt’s eyes widened at her words. He never imagined that the cause, the reason she... did it.... was because of her disease.
But when the story changed to the truth, he really didn’t expect to hear that her own sister was the cause behind it all. He felt a wave of anger wash over him.
"Wait... Are you saying your own sister.... made you go insane...?-“
“She apparently lethalised my medicine dosage, yes. I had lost consciousness due to exhaustion and she came into my bedroom, apparently she moved me into the washroom and set my body to make it seem as though I had-” She sighs, not wanting to give more detail. She has already given enough.
“How old was your sister when she did this?”
“Twenty-three, she still lived with us, which was unnatural at the time. All women are usually married off by 20 at the oldest.”
“Were you… married off?”
“No, but I had a suitor prepared for me… My future was just at my reach… He was nice, kind…”
“Did you like him?”
The girl shrugs “I suppose, I wouldn’t have married him on my own accord, of course. Its what my father wanted, so…”
Matt was shocked at this. “So your dad was just going to marry you off to some random guy that you never loved?”
Adelaide cant help but laugh softly at his surprised expression.
“This happened to every woman back when I was alive, Matt”
Matt didn’t care about the “other women”. He was concerned about Adelaide, the fact that her already short-lived life wasn’t how she wanted it to play out. The fact that she never had a say in her own happiness infuriated him, and now she never will.
“My sister didn’t obtain a suitor. She had a few but they always rejected a marriage offer, I never knew why. My sister was beautiful.” Adelaide clears her throat to stop a tear from forming in her eye. “Why don’t you start writing it down?” She turns his focus back onto his assignment.
As Matt begins to write notes, he decides to turn them into a full essay later. He wants his facts first. But just as Adelaide is spelling out her sisters name to him, the pen flies from his hand and hits the wall on the other side of him, the paper soon following.
“Holy shit!”
“Are you alright?” He nods at Adelaide’s concern. “She doesn’t like when people tell that story…”
“Imagine that…” Matt mutters in a sarcastic tone. “Wait, you still talk with her?”
“She’s still here. Though she died much older.”
He let out a shaky breath as he heard Adelaide’s words.
“S-She’s still here?” He repeated, his voice as soft as a whisper. He felt a rush of anxiety wash over him, he could feel the hair on the nape of his neck stand up, chills run down his spine. He was suddenly very aware of where he was, and the possibility of Adelaide’s sisters presence.
“I don’t allow her to be seen by you.”
“yeah I’d rather not- How do you ‘not allow her’?”
“I protect you here, Matt. And your family.”
His heart skips a beat when he hears Adelaide mention that she protects him and his family. He feels a mix of gratitude and relief fill him, he was grateful that she was looking out for him, but he was also afraid of what she’s protecting him from.
“How do you… protect me? and why?”
“The house has made me believe that it is because I was the first to die within it’s walls, I somehow have the power to protect you. As for why… I protect you because I have never felt this way for a man.”
Matt could feel his heart flutter as her words hit him, they reached into his chest and wrapped around his heart in a protective hug. Adelaide cares for him, more than anybody else, and she had the power to protect him. He gently took one of her hands, an action he only learnt was possible a few months ago, and brought it to his chest holding her against his heart.
“I always forget that you can do this” She smiles down at her hand in his.
“You really care that much about me?”
“I said earlier that I wouldn’t have married my suitor from my life if I had the choice… If I ever did have a choice for marriage… it would’ve been a man like you.”
Matt couldn’t believe his ears. She would’ve chosen him. He was speechless for a moment. He doesn’t want to move, breathe, he was afraid that he was in a dream and that one wrong move would wake him up. “You would’ve chosen me?”
Adelaide doesn’t even have time to answer before Matt sees the blood. It’s seeping through Adelaide’s dress, right above her heart.
“Adelaide…”
“What is it?” Her eyes grew a size or two in worry.
“I didn’t realise but… I see it. The blood. Is that where she-”
“No” The girl begins to panic. “No no no no. Y-You can see this?”
He nods slowly, his eyes fixed on the deep red that contrasts the innocent blue of her dress. “Yes… Its right there”
“That… is the injury from my death, I-I don’t want you to see this… Y-You won’t love me if you see this.” Matt’s heart aches at her words. He shook his head fast , his voice filled with conviction.
“No…No, that’s not true, seeing this doesn’t change how I feel about you, I love you no matter what.”
“But I-” Adelaide cuts herself off with a sharp gasp when her dress changes before their eyes. The fabric loosing its beautiful colour, and opening around Adelaide’s wound, showcasing where the knife pierced her skin.
Matt was stunned as he watched her dress change, the fabric shifting and opening up. He could see the wound in her chest now, clear as day. He felt a wave of different emotions wash over him. sadness for the pain that Adelaide endured, anger that this was something she had to go through. He was speechless again for a moment, his eyes locked onto her body, taking in the sight in front of him.
After a few seconds, he finally spoke up, his voice soft yet filled with compassion.
"I... I can see it..."
Tears fill the poor girls eyes as her dress opens the last little bit, fully revealing the cut that killed her. Matt’s heart ached as he saw the tears fill her eyes, the last of the dress disappearing around the wound, revealing the fatal cut on her body. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. The love of his life, the person he just admitted he loved, was killed by that cut. He felt a wave of sadness wash over him, his eyes glued to the sight in front of him. He was unable to speak for a few moments, his mind working overtime trying to process what he was seeing.
Adelaide doesn’t take the silence well. She doesn’t give him time to speak, she stands up and rushes out of the room. His heart sank as she stood up and ran away from him, disappearing as she left his room. He was torn between wanting to go after her and wanting to respect her need for space. Matt knew that chasing after her when she was upset is not a good idea. He sat there at his desk, his heart heavy, his mind full of questions. He let out a deep sigh, silently hoping that she would be okay.
Hours passed but Adelaide were nowhere to be seen. He couldn't sleep. His mind was full of thoughts, worries about her. He tossed and turned in his bed, trying to will himself to fall asleep, but it was futile. He lay there for what felt like an eternity when suddenly, he heard a faint creak from the door. he sat up quickly, his eyes scanning the darkness. He searched every square inch of his dark bedroom, but Adelaide was nowhere to be found.
He lay back down and eventually falls asleep, only to be awoken again by a nightmare. He woke up with a gasp, his heart racing from the nightmare he had. His body was tense, beads of sweat trickling down his forehead. He was about to sit up when he suddenly felt a gentle touch on his hair. His heart skipped a beat as he realized what was happening.
He couldn’t see Adelaide, but he could feel her presence. He could feel her hand gently stroking his hair, soothing him. He knows that she is ensuring that he doesn’t see her because of what he will also see when she makes herself visible to him. It was her way of protecting him from seeing the injury that took her life. He felt a mix of emotions. it was comforting to know that [FNAME] was there, that she cared enough to soothe him after his nightmare, but he also felt a pang of sadness knowing that he couldn’t see her.
After a few soothing yet saddening moments, Matt hears a soft whisper.
“I love you too much to allow you to see me this way.”
He lay there, listening to the sound of her whisper, his heart rate slowly returning to normal. He wanted to say something, to respond to her declaration of love, but he couldn’t find the words. He reached out tentatively, searching for her hand in the dark, wanting to feel her touch once more.
“Matt… don’t” She warns in a whisper, they both know that as soon as he touches her, she will be seen by him. He refuses to let go, once he’s found her hand, he traces his thumb over her knuckles as she becomes more visible to him in the soft glow of the moon through his window.
Matt sits up in his bed, tracing every feature of her face with gentle eyes.
“You don’t love me like this, do you?”
Matt was taken aback by her question. How could she believe that he no longer loved her? He shook his head quickly, his voice gentle and hurt that she would believe such a lie. “I do love you. More than anything, please don’t ever doubt that.”
“But what about my injury? Nobody is beautiful like this.”
Matt couldn’t believe his ears, He sits up in his bed, leaning close to Adelaide. “That doesn’t change how I see you. You’re still the most beautiful person to me, inside and out. Nothing could change that. Nothing.” He rests his forehead against hers gently, just living in this moment as he wants to forever. He closed his eyes briefly, as if trying to memorize every detail of the moment, before he spoke in a soft and tender whisper.
"I love you... I don’t care what you look like, I don't care about the wound. I love you, all of you."
Matt does something brave, something he’s never done before, he musters up the courage to lean even closer, bringing his lips to meet hers. It was a soft and tentative kiss, filled with nothing but love. He pulled away briefly, his eyes lock with hers as he spoke.
“I’ve wanted to do that for a long time…”
This brings a laugh from Adelaide “How do you imagine how I feel, it’s been a hundred and twenty five years for me”
Matt joins in on the laughter, it is cut short with confusion when Matt realises something. Her wound is disappearing, his eyes widen in surprise and confusion.
“It’s… disappearing.”
“What is?”
He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. bits and pieces of her injuries were vanishing before his eyes. He reached out and touched the area where the injury used to be, his fingers gently brushing against her skin. He looked up at her, a mixture of surprise and curiosity in his eyes. “how is this happening..?”
Matt lightly traces his fingertips along the skin where the wound used to be. Adelaide looks down and sees no blood. “I-It’s gone.”
His fingertips gently traced the area where the fatal cut used to be on her chest. He was in disbelief as he saw that her injury had vanished. He then realises that her dress was mended perfectly, as if the injuries had never been there in the first place. He shook his head in bewilderment, his voice filled with awe as he spoke. “I don’t understand.. it’s gone... completely Gone..”
“I-I don’t know what t-this means” Adelaide stammers, completely confused.
He couldn’t say for sure what this new development meant. all he knew is that seeing her injuries disappearing right before his eyes was a miracle.
he shook his head, feeling a surge of hope rise within him.
"Maybe this means something... maybe..." he trailed off, unsure of what to make of this strange occurrence. He stops his sentence when he feels her hand become lighter in his, he looks down and sees something that tears his heart from his chest.
“Adelaide… your hand…” When she looks down, she sees her hand starting to fade away, she’s disappearing.
“No.. No I don’t want to go yet.”
“You’re.. you’re leaving me, aren’t you?” Matt’s eyes flood with tears.
She’s passing over.
He can’t stop it.
“Hey, it’s okay” Matt speaks, his throat burning as he attempts to keep his tear at bay. He refuses to let her see him like that. He will stay strong for her. “You can finally be happy.”
“But I am happy with you.”
“Adelaide, you can finally sleep… you can see your mom again”
“I-I do miss my mother…”
Matt’s heart aches as he hears her broken words. She hasn’t seen her mother in over 100 years. “You can be free to do whatever you want now, nothing can hold you back” He forces a smile.
Adelaide cant hold her tears any longer, she lets out a choked sob. “I don’t want to be without you.” Matt can sense the pain in her words. He stroked her hair gently and pulled her closer as he spoke in a gentle voice. “Hey, that’s okay, I’ll always remember you alright? You’ll always be in my mind and my heart.”
After a long tight hug that slowly becomes lighter and lighter, Adelaide finally gives in.
“Thank you for every moment, Matt”
His entire body aches with emotion. He looks into her eyes. “I will never forget our moments, Adelaide, you’ll always be the love of my life.”
“Don’t forget to write about me” Adelaide lets out a soft chuckle as she reminds him to write about her in his history presentation.
“I will write a million books about you, Adelaide you can be my ghostly muse” He smiles at his half-joke. He really will write about her. Every book, every school assignment, every word with be somehow tied to Adelaide
“I adore the sound of that.” She smiles through her tears.
Matt’s heart aches as he sees her attempt to smile. He couldn’t bear to see her this way. He gently wipes away her tears with his thumbs, he keeps his hands cupped to her cheeks, savouring the contact while he still can. His gaze filled with love and loss.
“Maybe one day we will be alive at the same time.”
“In the next life. I’ll find you.”
“Do you promise?” Her voice breaks as her eyes beg for his promise.
“I promise.”
They sit in silence as Adelaide slowly fades away.
“I love you”
“I adore you”
They kiss, once more to remember each other, they wish that they could stay in that moment forever. But alas, when Matt opens his eyes, the love of his life is nowhere to be seen. She has finally moved on, she will be at peace. Reunited with her mother. Free to be herself. Matt closed his eyes again, a mix of sadness and contentment coursing through him. He whispers into the dark of his bedroom, hoping that wherever Adelaide is, she can still hear him.
“I will always love you.”
☙༻✽༺❧
The next week was hard for Matt, he can’t go an hour of the day without thinking of his ghostly love. It can come to the time for him to read out his history assignment to his class. He wrote about her, just like he’d promised. He makes his way to the front of the class, preparing for the laughter as he is bound to burst into tears at the first sentence.
That is until his headmaster walks into the class, interrupting him. Matt silently thanks the man for postponing his assignment from being read, although it is something that Adelaide had wanted.
“Excuse me, Mr Sturniolo, I’m just here to introduce our new student. This is Addie. She has joined us from… where is it you’re from again?”
The new student comes to view, Matt cannot believe his eyes when he sees this girl. Her captivating eyes remind Matt of her. She’s wearing her favourite colour. She looks just like Adelaide.
“Oh, I’m from… all over.”
The girl takes a seat at the desk next to Matts. He is told to begin reading his assignment. He doesn’t feel afraid to read it anymore. He feels comforted, his eyes drawn to the girl sat next to his empty chair. He reads his assignment perfectly, he does get choked up when he speaks of Adelaide’s injury that caused her death. He remembers seeing the stab wound that she thought for so long was her doing. But when he looks up at this strangely familiar girl, his sadness and slight anger dissipates.
After his class has ended, he feels a tap on his shoulder, when he looks up at this girl, he sees her at a closer view. The resemblance is uncanny.
“What’s your name?”
“I-I’m Matt”
“I like that name… Sorry, I know this is weird but I just feel like I know you.” He doesn’t find it weird at all. Matt couldn’t help but feel a pang of emotion as he hears those words. The familiarity in her voice and words striking a chord in him.
“That’s not weird. You remind me of someone too.”
“Is she pretty?” The girl jokes with a smile.
He chuckled softly at the light-hearted comment. He shook his head slightly, his voice growing softer. “She isn’t just pretty, she is like nobody else. She’s the most beautiful girl in the world. She had this warmth about her, just one look from her would make you forget everything else in the world… she is- well, she was- perfect.” Matts eyes fill with tears when he refers to Adelaide in the past tense.
“Was? Oh, I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay, it just still stings a little.”
Addie decides to change the subject, to avoid making him more upset, little does she know she will speak of the same girl.
“Hey, that presentation you did in there, from the eighteen-hundreds? That was some intense shit… So she used to live in your house all those years ago?”
He nodded with a small smile, honestly he wants to talk about her to this girl. To Matt, it feels like he is talking to Adelaide herself, telling her how… fascinating she was. God, she loved to use that word.
“Yeah, she died a hundred and twenty-five years ago…” He changes his story slightly so that this girls doesn’t think he’s crazy. “People say that her ghos- her spirit stayed for years and years after. She always thought that she had killed herself, because she didnt remember her death because she was so sick, but really it was her sister. She was only nineteen when she died, all she wanted from her life was to live how she wanted and to fall in love. Apparently she did, but with someone who was alive, they fell in love and when she realised that he loved her no mater what, she finally moved on. After over a hundred years…” Matt blinks away tears.
“Wow, thats fascinating.” His eyes grow wider when she says that.
“Did you just say fascinating?”
“Yeah, I love that word. I’m not sure why, just always use it.”
Matt’s gaze softens. “It really is a great word… Adelaide really was fascinating, she still continues to fascinate me, and everyone who hears about her…”
Addie smiles softly, seeing the clear appeal that he has with this spirit. “Why don’t you tell me more about her? I like to be fascinated” She laughs.
“Okay…” They start to walk down the hallway towards the exit doors, they walked home together that day. He told Addie all about Adelaide, she was genuinely interested, he was grateful of that. She asked questions and took in the information.
Matt will always love Adelaide, but he feels a very strong connection to her when he is with Addie. He can’t help but wonder if it’s possible for Adelaide’s spirit to be in this girl who is an absolute reflection of her.
Maybe they will always find each other.
In life and in death.

pass a good time
Miles Morales x Black! Original Character
A/N: so I'm definitely not finishing this series because I'm just not feeling it anymore 😭 but I found a continuation of pt. 1 in my google docs and a lot of people seem to like it even after a whopping 4 years! Here u go 🫶🏾
Tumblr media
Addy’s thumb hovered over Miles’ contact as she sat in front of her chromebook, bleary-eyed. She'd gotten Miles' number (or rather, Maya had gotten it for her) after Addy had gotten a 'C' on her last Spanish quiz and nearly fainted.
The empty PowerPoint presentation woefully would not complete itself. The assignment should’ve been simple: discuss three dishes from your Spanish-speaking country of choice. She had chosen Puerto Rico, easy, right?
‘Easy’, until it was 11:55 pm, 24 hours before the shit was due. Desperate times, desperate measures.
Adelaide, 11:56pm: hey, sorry to bother you so late! I’m struggling bad w this Spanish assignment and I was wondering if you could help?
Miles, 12am: hey addy
I gotchu right now gimme a second
Addy nearly jumped as a FaceTime call from Miles lit up her screen not moments later, ripping off her bonnet with a speed that could cause whiplash. She sat up in her bed as straight as she could, fumbling for her glasses as she accepted the call.

Haru's distorted persona: Adelaide of Italy (Adelaide)
Tumblr media
Background: One of the most powerful women of 10th century medieval Europe, queen of Queen of West Francia and later the Holy Roman Empress. She was beloved by her subjects for her extravagant acts of charity that came to the detriment of the royal treasury.
So there is a lot more to this saint's story than what I put in the background but I couldn't fit it as I wanted the background to be how they'd look in game so a lot of cutting was done. Surprisingly enough,, this one was actually the hardest one for me to decide on as Haru cycled through about 5 other women before I settled on Adelaide.
Adelaide of Italy was first married to Lothair II but this marriage didn't last particularly long as Lothair was poisoned by his usurper, Berengar II who tried to force Adelaide into marrying his son, Adalbert. Adelaide refused and was imprisoned for this but she managed to escape with the help of a priest and she wrote to the most powerful man in Europe for help offering her hand in marriage to convince him. They had a successful marriage, producing 5 kids. She was a powerful influence at court during her son's regency but eventually got overthrown by her daughter-in-law. She was eventually restored to power after her son then daughter-in-law died leaving her the regent for her grandson. She eventually resigned once he was capable of ruling without her and dedicated her life to acts of charity and the church.
On a surface level, its already clear why Adelaide was chosen for Haru as Shadow Haru is assigned the Heavenly virtue of charity Adelaide is well known for her charity and is an empress so Haru's arcana comes into play as well.
Naturally there was at play in the decision to use Adelaide as much like Haru, she was put into difficult positions by the men in her life but she managed to claw her way out of these messes without compromising her beliefs.
Shadow Haru is being charitable with the people of the Phantom Thieves' utopia at the expense of the people the Phantom Thieves deem unworthy of their utopia. Much like how Adelaide's generosity to her people endangered the treasury. It's a kind act but people are being hurt by their actions as overcharging the people deemed problematic to society helps no one and while the royal treasury funds the extravagant lives of royals and the nobility, it is also used to pay for things such as the standing army, etc. so using up all the funds on charity, while a kind act, is quite reckless.
As stated before me and Krotus are not artists but for what Adelaide looks like, in her boss fight, she's a skeleton draped in the finest of cloth and jewelry with her 5 children at her feet and a gardening basket with the heads of the men who wronged her. Then when she takes the form of a persona the persona is more human and the severed heads are gone, she takes after Shadow Haru's forest witch appearance and has hands holding onto her wrist, hands and elbows in an intricate pattern to represent her as a symbol of female empowerment through female relationships (This symbol is inspired by Adelaide being the patron saint of widows and abuse victims)

OZ Comic Con Adelaide 2024 Report!
Tumblr media
I had the wonderful opportunity of attending OZ Comic Con in Adelaide for the whole weekend with my good friend Pie (@piedivide!)!
It was a very fun weekend filled with so many things across both days that I have to write down before I forget!
I cosplayed Herta and Pie cosplayed Welt Yang, both from Honkai: Star Rail! These are our first cosplays for the year and we put in a lot of work into our wig styling, makeup and more!
All under the cut!
Day 1: Saturday
I woke up at 7am, ready to start preparing for the convention! I wanted to get there by 11am!
Admittedly, I struggled a lot more than I should have while doing so, which caused me to come around 12pm instead...
I was really busy throughout the whole week prior to the con trying to finish my assignments since it’s the end of the semester and uh…I didn’t have a chance to practice putting on the cosplay or my makeup before Day 1.
Not good, I know.
To make matters worse, a safety pin holding up the chain decided to break randomly behind the lock. I had to fix that somehow while trying to get everything to look right…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I managed at the end!
My mum helped me out with my makeup and putting on things! I couldn't have done it all without her.
Herta’s shoes were not comfortable at all to walk in since they have heels, but I decided to wear them until I arrived at the convention since it was a part of the cosplay! I wanted to show off the whole look to all!
(I paid a lot of money for them as well aha)
I slightly regretted that decision, since I wore the sneakers I brought with me for the whole entire con and the fact that my feet were hurting after walking for less than ten minutes. I think shoes are great for photos but some aren't practical to wear around all day....
Anyway!
I got to the station first and waited around for Pie to arrive once I gave them the signal...after I fixed my hat that fell off randomly that may or may not have taken 15 minutes….
Don’t ask. I’m sorry ;;
We decided that I would wait for him to come to the station since last time, they arrived at the same time as me. We also decided to wait until the con to see each other’s cosplays for the first time!
I remember seeing from afar the outline of Welt Yang on top of the escalators coming down towards me and immediately, I was filled with a sense of excitement! They kept coming closer and closer to me and I kept smiling like an absolute idiot.
Pie’s cosplay was so good, as I proceeded to say multiple times to his face! I especially loved the wig, they put a lot of effort into making it look amazing!
He totally blew my mind, in a good way! They were slaying Welt Yang and I hope he knows that!
To my surprise, Pie had not one but TWO things for me which made me very happy! I didn’t expect anything from them!

A Dan Heng headband and a Herta pin?! Thank you once again, Pie!!!
We headed to the convention via a train that takes us to the Adelaide Showgrounds directly! We didn’t see any cosplayers on the train, but we did see some as soon as we arrived!
In fact, a car stopped in the middle of driving as we were walking to the entrance and the people inside complimented our cosplays! It was the first time that sort of situation ever happened to us!
It felt so cool.
There were these Goddess Madoka and Demon Homura cosplayers that made me freak out so much upon seeing them in the distance since I'm a huge fan of PMMM.
Pie and I originally bought only Saturday passes since we initially were going to only attend Day 1 and then use Sunday as the day we took pictures and videos together. This changed when we saw that there was a Star Rail cosplay meetup at 11am on Day 2.
Of course, it was on the Sunday that we weren’t going to at an early time…I informed Pie of this as soon as I mentioned that the schedule was out for the convention.
If we knew beforehand, we would have bought a weekend pass in the first place. Unfortunately, the schedule came out with about a week until the con.
We were also worried we wouldn’t be able to buy tickets at the early bird prices if we waited. Perhaps, buying early isn’t a good idea at times...
After some quick deliberation on our parts, we decided to upgrade to Weekend passes! We couldn’t miss this chance to meet other cosplayers who also like HSR! We read online that we could do so at the front desk upon arriving at the convention on the FAQ.
That was our plan upon getting there, but it didn’t go as smoothly as we thought. The Help Desk was where we were directed to when we asked about upgrading them, but none of the people at the desk were able to help us.
We had to wait until another person came from their lunch break who knew how to do it. We wandered around for a little bit, coming back a few times to see the same people still at the desk. The person we needed came eventually and helped us both out without any trouble!
With our Weekend passes and the bands on us nice and secure, we could finally start our Day 1…once I went to the bathroom.
I had to take off my large black coat my mum kindly gave me and pack things away. I wanted a mirror so I could see how my wig was fairing and remove those Herta shoes.
It was a lovely thought from my mum, but I shouldn’t have brought it with me. It was so thick that it took all the space in my Fuwamoco tote bag I had with me despite how warm it was.
I also regretted bringing my backpack, especially with Herta’s long hair. It was such a hassle pulling it off and putting it on….I didn't even start the day and I already had so many regrets slowly piling up behind me.
We could NOW start our day!
We walked around mostly for Day 1, seeing what the convention had and admiring cosplays!
There were a lot of people everywhere!
Tumblr media
There were scribble walls you could draw on freely and people truly did draw some amazing things….Dio Brando face Peppa wasn’t what I expected at all.
People complemented our cosplays and asked for photos! It made me so happy, it meant we were doing something right with them! We were going to buy prints for each other and take professional photos, but we decided to leave that for Day 2.
Tumblr media
I saw this Void Drifter Kiana Kaslana figure and immediately freaked out since it was the first Honkai Impact 3rd related thing I ever saw!
It cost like $300 bucks, which I so would have bought if I didn't have to buy my next cosplay. The first photos I took of it were so shaky because I was too excited lol
I just was happy to see anything HI3.
Time to showcase all the amazing cosplayers I got photos with for Day 1! Thank you for taking a photo with me!
Tumblr media
Wriothesley (@cypher_cosplay on Instagram) and Neuvillette (@edenzcosplay on Instagram)!!!!
Me looking like some kind of NPC because I didn’t know what pose to do 🧍‍♂️
Both of their cosplays look amazing! I was the first to notice Neuvillette, and then Pie noticed Wriothesley! Pie sort of walked straight up to them wanting a photo and I just followed along like a lost puppy haha
They were both very kind!
Tumblr media
Kafka (@s.jn_jack on Instagram)!!!
It was them who came up to us first, saying how he liked our cosplay! Pie and I saw their cosplay while walking around and I remember being really happy seeing a Kafka cosplayer!
This was his first cosplay as they told us and they did amazing for their first time!!
Tumblr media
Sparkle (@_.emmet._t on Instagram)!!!
I remember seeing her while walking and being happy that there was a Sparkle cosplayer here! There were many HSR cosplayers on Day 1 including us, much to my surprise!
Such a pretty cosplay, I absolutely love it! I feel like they captured the personality and idea of Sparkle so well!
Tumblr media
Madoka and Homura (@sonickyx on Instagram)!!!!
These are the ones I saw when I got to the convention!
I wanted to take a photo with them but I was such a sissy that it took me forever to do so. I’ve never been good at asking for any photos since I'm a little shy, but I wanted to try!
Every time I attempted to, they seemed busy and I’d hate to interrupt anyone if they're doing something. It took way longer than it should have, but I did it at the end!
Their cosplays are so pretty!
...
If you can tell throughout these pictures…my wig was slowly falling off throughout the day. I didn’t even notice until I realised when we took some of the photos together with the cosplayers and I uh...couldn't really do anything about it then.
I was stupid and didn’t properly secure the wig cap or my wig, even though I was going to with bobby pins in the first place. Don’t be like me.
I thought it was going to stay in place ;;
It was one of the reasons why we left certain things like the photography to Day 2, although I felt bad because Pie seemed to really want to take photos, despite them reassuring me that it was okay.
Another was that I was a little unsatisfied with my makeup because I was too afraid of using my eyeliner I bought. I’ve never used it before that point and didn’t want to poke my eyes out before the convention. I wanted to take nice professional photos I could be proud of, you know?
Don't worry, I learnt my lesson for Day 2. Day 1 was like a trial day for me, which I wished wasn't the case but you live and learn! I was still happy with my cosplay overall!
After some more walking around, we felt like we did everything we could do and see for Day 1! We left at around 3:30pm and headed back to the city since we planned to do Karaoke at 6pm for two hours!
There was this little place I mentioned to Pie that I saw on Friday where they sold Katsudon that we could go to for food if they were open! It was in the station, in the underground pass that I always have walked through since I was a kid.
Pie and I went to check it out, but it was closed…Google said it would open at 5pm, so we wandered around Rundle Mall to pass the time in our wonderful cosplays. Walking around in cosplay while not at a convention is a scary experience.
People always stare at you no matter what and are probably silently judging you from afar. It wasn’t as daunting as I thought it would be though, but that’s because I had the Welt Yang by my side. It's always better when you have a friend!
On the way to Rundle Mall, we got stopped by these two people who complemented our cosplays! It was sort of out of the blue, but it was very welcomed! Pie was the one who mostly talked to the both of them, I was sort of just there smiling and nodding.
We came back at 5pm….only to realise that Google is a liar and the restaurant is only open late on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We missed one of the signs literally in front of us that told us this fact….
At this point, everything was pretty much closed or about to close as well since it was the weekend. Why didn't they update Google with this vital piece of information?!
I blame Google for this mishap.
We headed back to Rundle Mall in defeat, and decided upon a place that sold sushi and various other foods! It was one of the places that were still open. I got Takoyaki, a Karrage Chicken Skewer and a Prawn Katsu Skewer! It was pretty good, although I wish there was more of it.
Pie got the same, but instead of the prawn he got a salt and pepper skewer. The person who served us was very kind and complemented our cosplays in fact!
So many complements, and it was only Day 1!
Once we ate, we had to wait around until the Karaoke place was open in the cold for a while. I was freezing since I didn’t put on my coat and Herta's outfit isn't that warm. I know I should have, but it would have been such a pain taking it out of the tote bag.
The Karaoke place opened earlier than expected actually once we started heading down there, so we went right in! We sang many songs, and it was loads of fun!
I had a whole list of songs that I prepared for this day, but I still struggled to choose what to sing....
If you ever sing karaoke with me, it will always take me forever to actually choose something as a warning. I feel like I don't know too many songs fully that well, so I always mess up aha
I think my favourite song I sang was Cyberangel! I love Bronya a lot and the song is an absolute banger!
I took off my wig and my wig cap in the middle of it all because it was about to fall off completely and I couldn’t handle it anymore. Once 8pm hit, that was it!
The whole time, I was holding a wig in my hands as I headed back home on the train. I took everything immediately off without even batting an eye as soon as I came home, brushing out my wig that became super messy.
I didn’t go to sleep until after midnight.
Day 2: Sunday
I woke up at 5:30am because of the meetup….the things we do for cosplay.
This time around, I knew what I was doing and was able to be ready by 9am!
Tumblr media
Unlike Day 1, I did my makeup all by myself!
I managed to put on the eyeliner without getting any into my eye somehow and look decent! For someone who’s never done it before…it’s kind of incredible.
The whole time I was doing it, I called myself a tensai (genius) for being able to do this lmao
My mum told me how she managed to get eyeliner in her eye when she first started but it really wasn’t that hard…I think she tried to scare me off from doing this my whole life. Actually….my right eye is thicker than my left eye, but you can’t tell with my glasses for the most part.
For my wig, I pinned the absolute crap out of the wig cap and the wig itself. It may have been a bit overkill using every single bobby pin I had, but it’s better to be safe than sorry! It worked pretty well, if I do say so myself. It didn’t move at all, not once during the entire day even while I was outside.
Instead of packing my backpack like Day 1, I just packed everything into my tote bag! It was much easier to manage! I also wore a thinner jacket and put on my sneakers first! This whole setup worked way better for me.
This time around, Pie came to the station right away since we had to take a train that was about 10 minutes after when I would arrive in order to get to the convention by the time the meetup started. For the whole time, I was convinced that the train was coming at 10:27am and I wasn’t going to make it, but I was looking at the wrong schedule….
And then we were at the wrong platform too once I got there…
Point is, we found where we were meant to go and got onto the train when it came!
The train had some cosplayers this time around, so we felt right at home! It seemed like Sunday was the more popular day for the convention, which makes sense with more people being potentially free on this day.
Getting into the convention was easy since we had our weekend passes, one simple flash of our bands and we could waltz right in without any trouble!
Tumblr media
We headed straight for the meetup area! It was at the very back of the convention area, near the bathrooms and food area filled with loads of tables and chairs.
To our surprise and confusion, there was no one really there for what was meant to be the HSR meetup. It was oddly empty, spare for a few random cosplayers. I saw a Silver Wolf cosplayer nearby, but that was the only other HSR cosplayer around. We definitely didn’t go to the wrong place since there was a whole sign there with the schedule…
We took a seat at a table, deciding to wait for more people to show up hopefully. I took off my jacket and Pie kindly put it in their tote bag since I had no space in mine…thank you again, Pie!
The Silver Wolf cosplayer ran straight up to us and asked for a photo right after we finished with all that!
Tumblr media
I was so surprised, I didn’t expect for them to come to us so quickly wanting a photo!
They were so nice and kind! Their wig was amazing, it looked so accurate from the back!
Tumblr media
And then an Aventurine cosplayer (@myki.cosplay on Instagram) came up to us as well, and we all took photos together! He looked amazing as well!
Me again with my NPC pose 🧍‍♂️
One of the staff members informed us that there was no meetup in fact, there were some others here earlier but they left for some reason. It was a bit disappointing to hear.
They then asked if they could take a photo of all of us for the convention, and we obliged of course! I think I stood like an NPC again because I had no pose ideas…I have no clue how it came out.
I suppose we shall find out!
Pie and I waited for a bit longer after that, to see if anyone else would appear. It sucked because we were excited for the meetup and the idea of meeting new people!
Alas…there was no more HSR cosplayers.
People kept coming and going, but we knew that it was all done. It felt like we got up early and came all this way for nothing. It was the only reason we came on Day 2…but we didn’t let that dampen anything!
After a while, we decided to continue our journey around the convention. Our main agenda was getting some food since we both skipped breakfast in favor of getting ready.
Tumblr media
We passed by the Just Dance area, and I literally stopped in place at the sight in front of me. It took me less than a second to see them.
THERE WAS BRONYA AND SEELE COSPLAYERS RIGHT THERE. HONKAI IMPACT 3RD COSPLAYERS AT MY CONVENTION HUH??????????
ESPECIALLY TWO OF MY FAVOURITE OUTFITS FOR THEM????????
BRONSEELE?????
I didn’t expect to see any HI3 cosplayers since it isn’t as popular as Genshin or HSR unfortunately, so I freaked the heck out!
Pie freaked out too, more so for the Johnny and Gyro cosplayers from JoJo Part 7! They looked very cool, even though I only recognize them vaguely since I’ve seen them before online. They were waiting in line to do Just Dance, while the two of us just stared in awe while trying to process these sheer facts.
We decided to wait for them to finish, and then ask for a photo!
I know I’m not good at asking for them, but there was no way I could miss this chance. It was very fun watching Seele dance! Bronya was recording it all!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seele (@vinfartsanji on Instagram) and Bronya (@s7kun4 on Instagram)!!!!
Johnny and Gyro (@sonickyx on Instagram) were the same cosplayers who did Madoka and Homura on Day 1!!!!
Pie was the one who asked for a photo of them all together first, then I asked for a picture with Bronya and Seele while Pie asked for Johnny and Gyro! I never felt so confident in my life, although I did stutter a bit.
I mentioned how I loved their Bronya and Seele cosplays and they were happy that I was a HI3 fan and that we needed more HI3 recognition and cosplays at conventions!
I absolutely agree with them! I’m going to cosplay HI3 at some point in the near future! If you can’t tell, I’m a bit of a HI3 fanatic who likes the game a little too much.
They were all very lovely and kind! I’m so glad they were here, and that we were able to see them!
I was over the moon, completely all because of their presence! Day 2 became my favourite day. And it kept only getting better!
We continued our walk around the convention, until we looped back around to the back where the meetup area was once more. There was a scribble wall nearby, where there were many people drawing whatever they wanted.
I saw a very familiar behind at the wall drawing, and I literally blurted out of nowhere:
“Is that…Elysia????”
She turned towards us a bit and I freaked out so much, it really was a Elysia cosplayer in her Flamechaser outfit! I already was so happy with Bronya and Seele, so I could have died there and then for real. I was winning so hard!!!
ELYSIA COSPLAYER AS WELL????? WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS TREAT???????
ELYSIA AT MY ANIME CONVENTION RIGHT HERE????
My freaking out was cut a little short when a staff member, a lovely older lady, came up to us informing that we can take a marker and draw something as well. I took a purple one since I was Herta and purple is sort of her colour.
I continued my freaking out after she left, still in utter disbelief that there were THREE HI3 cosplayers here in this convention on this one day. I had to get a photo. It’s Elysia after all! One of my absolute favourites!
We waited until she finished her drawing, trying not to stare directly at her too weirdly. There was a short moment when we were just staring at each other after she finished, and I went up to her bravely since I had her attention.
I asked for a photo, and I told them her how much I Ioved her Elysia cosplay. That’s when she ran to her friend in utter happiness, so glad that someone recognized her!
I found it very adorable. I think it must feel amazing for someone to recognize who you are, especially if you're cosplaying from a fandom that isn't as popular (but it should be!!!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elysia (@_lumistar.cos on Instagram)!!!
I got a photo with her, copying the classic Elysia pose because I had no ideas for myself. Pie also got a photo as well! After that, I was so giddy that I couldn't stop thinking about it all! I felt like my life was complete, you know?
We went up to the scribble wall since we had those markers still in hand, and left a little doodle! I didn’t take any pictures of it, but I drew a small Herta!
Pie then found the lovely older lady who gave us the markers to return them, and we had a lovely conversation about how her daughter loves HSR and how even she was interested in playing the game!
She even asked for photos of us for her daughter when we told her who we were cosplaying! I remember she wanted just Pie at first since he was talking mostly with her but when I told her who I was cosplaying, she wanted a photo of me too!
Such a nice person, I hope her daughter likes the picture! I love kind people like this, it's always so nice to talk to them!
Finally, we went to get some food after a few little detours that were very welcomed.
Tumblr media
We bought Chips on a Stick!
I’ve never actually had it before, someone let me try a little one time back in 2016 I think…?
It was very tasty, but very filling and it took a while to eat on my part because I'm a slow eater. Pie and I sat down in a little corner and talked while we ate about many things. We had a wonderful discussion about Welt Yang himself and how Pie was the reason I like Welt so much!
I think the way they liked Welt made me starting liking him too, especially since I had him in HSR from the Departure Warp back when I first played!
I think I liked him even more once I started diving into his HI3 lore while playing the game and the fact that he's the Herrscher of Reason! The Second Eruption and Alien Space manga are my favourite ones that HI3 has made because Welt is such a focus in both of them!
Welt is just...so cool.
We were near one of the entrances in fact, which gave us the chance to admire all the cosplayers that came by! Everyone looked amazing, it's impressive how much effort everyone goes to!

Pie and I went for our professional photoshoot when I finished eating! There was a very long wait as there were many before us who were all in groups and all had to have individual shoots as well…
The cosplayers who did Wriothesley and Neuvillette on Day 1 came up to us during our time waiting and talked to us! I was so happy to see them again!
I put on my Herta shoes for this immediately, but my feet hurt by the time I finally got my photos after 30+ minutes of waiting…
Pain.
One of the main issues I had was that I simply had no clue about the poses or expressions I would do for the shoot. We had to do three of them as I learnt rather quickly, and I couldn’t even think of one real pose!
I’ve never been very good when other people take my photos I’ve noticed, I feel like I look so stupid sometimes aha…
NPC style….🧍‍♂️
It was a cool experience regardless! I’m glad I did try it out! It’s so cool how instant the photos are, they give you a QR code to scan to see all your photos!
I only liked two of the photographs at the end once I scanned the code after. I’ll definitely practice my poses and expressions for my next cosplay so I don’t run into this issue again!
Tumblr media
(Photography: @steamkittens)
Pie’s photos came out amazing though! Their poses and expressions are so good, I don’t know how he does it.
Teach me, please.
We then went to buy prints for each other at the Artist Alley! It’s a tradition we always do for every convention! Pie went to the very back, while I started from the front of the alley. I walked through it all and stared at all the pretty art in an attempt to see which print I would buy them.
I knew I wanted something either from the Legend of Zelda, Persona or Welt Yang himself since he likes all of those! Fun fact, I literally was right next to Pie at one point, I saw them and immediately tried to lean in and blend in with the crowd lmao
I actually ran into the Aventurine cosplayer from earlier at one of the stands! I thought they were selling, but in fact they were helping out and there was a lot of cool art there! We had a little chat before I awkwardly walked away like I always do in these situations, I'm no good at these sorts of things aha
I saw a perfect Welt Yang print, but it didn’t come in A3 unfortunately……..I was even waiting around for the artist to come back from their break…….
We usually get A3 prints for one another, so I didn’t know if Pie would be okay with it or not. I probably should have asked but I didn’t think I’d run into such a situation….
But I did find a really pretty Link print! That's what I bought for them at the end! Pie really liked it, so I’m really happy!!!
Tumblr media
They bought me a Pearlina print with their Final Fest outfits and I absolutely love it, you have no idea! Thank you again, Pie!!!!
I already put it up on my wall, hehe.
The only issue with all this was that none of us had a bag for our posters, the stands we went to ran out of them.
Pie was able to roll it up and put it in his tote bag, but I didn’t have that luxury without bending the print. I was going to carry it around and hope for the best, but they said we should try asking for a bag from another stand.
We waited around at one, but I decided to buy myself a print so I could get a bag. It was easier than waiting around, and there was always the possibility that any artist wouldn’t want to give one away since it was theirs.
Tumblr media
I got a Gawr Gura print! It’s so cute!!
I was going to do Just Dance, but I didn’t feel like doing it by the end, nor was I as thrilled about the fact that there would be so many people watching you dance and that they don’t even give you a Joy-Con so you can actually play the game properly.
How will anyone see the 5 stars I can get easily because I’ve played too much Just Dance in my lifetime?
I decided that I’d dance next time!
With that, we decided that it was time to leave. We did everything we wanted at the convention for Day 2, but it wasn’t over just yet! As we were about to leave through the gate, a cosplayer rushed after us wanting a photo. We could hear footsteps behind us, and we turned back to see them!
Pie managed to convince this old guy to go to the convention actually as we were walking back to the station lol
Heading back to the city, we went to Rundle Mall once again! This time around, we didn't even care that we were in cosplay. We became totally desensitized to it all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We entered the Adelaide Arcade since we were looking for some food to eat, but we actually took some photos from one of the bridges on the second floor! It was Pie’s idea, and it was pretty fun! I don’t usually go up there so it’s a fun excuse to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also went to the Million-Life Arcade and took some pictures there!
Once again, curtesy of Pie. I like their picture because it looks like Welt is really going through it for this one plushie lol
At the end, we decided to have some Hungry Jacks (Burger King as others may know it as) to eat since we wanted something on the cheaper side. We wrote our character names for the order since we were in cosplay, but I forgot to take a photo of mine...
Seeing Joachim and Herta on the order screen was such an amazing sight, although no one probably knew who were were. They actually called out Herta's name, which was so cool. I wonder if any of the employees knew who we were.
I got a Whopper, it was so worth the $11 in my opinion (although it is a lot).
Tumblr media
We headed to the Botanic Gardens to take some photos and videos!
It’s a huge garden that has so many places you can walk to and get lost in all the nature! Pie thought it would be the best place since we couldn't bother anyone there with our pictures. I don't get to go there very often, so I was happy we were!
That was the issue, however.
We wanted to find a secluded place with some solid ground where we could set up my tripod and record some short videos, which was way easier said than done aha
There were always people or something that ruined perfect spots for us, which only caused us to waste precious time since the Botanic Gardens were closing in about an hour and a half-ish....?
We actually entered a building that was apparently closed but we were able to enter regardless because someone else entered before us and we assumed we could go in as well...there was this lady who told us something in regards to leaving as we walked but we didn’t really hear her aha
We're breaking the rules in cosplay. Hell yeah.
Eventually, we settled on a place right in front of this greenhouse and we recorded some fun videos! We had a whole list, but we weren't able to get through them all unfortunately. I got to hit Pie with the Star of Eden actually, that was pretty fun! I was afraid of hitting him too hard but they said it was fine.
I also kept messing up this one sound that it was unfunny, I think we did it about four times before we got a decent one aha
Next time, we are taking way more videos! I guarantee we will for our next cosplays!
Pie and I packed up the tripod once we were told the Botanic Gardens were about to close by one of the workers and headed back to where the karaoke place was, since we were going to do karaoke again! We were debating if we should or not, but ultimately decided to!
There was a photo studio we were thinking of going to before karaoke, but it was closed when we got there…they weren't open on Sundays...
Once again, we didn’t read the sign in front of us. How did we manage to do this twice?!
Straight to Karaoke it was! It was harder this time around to choose a song since we did all the songs we wanted on Day 1. We even had to settle on doing anime openings at one point which was fun!
Especially for my case. It took me an embarrassingly long time to decide my final song…Sorry, Pie!
We wore the Dan Heng headbands and I set up my tripod once again to record some of the songs we sang for the memories! Pie told me that they didn't want to see the videos after, but one day in the far future I shall show them for fun muhahaha.
I think my favourite song that I did was Moon Halo for this day! I accidently spoilt an animation for Pie though in doing so...the video I used showed the full Everlasting Flames animation aha
I need to learn some more Japanese songs fully. I vow to learn at least two songs before the next convention! I want to impress Pie with my awesome Japanese hehe
Once 8pm hit...that was it! Our two hours were up and the wonderful weekend was over.
I headed back home, recording some TikTok’s for myself before ripping off my wig with adequate pain from all those bobby pins and taking off my cosplay.
Tumblr media
I had so much fun this weekend! I won’t ever forget the experiences I had!
I saw so many amazing cosplayers! I was able to take photos with them and even talk to them! It makes me very happy that I was confident enough do this!
Thank you for coming with me, Pie! Once again, you slayed Welt Yang! I can’t wait until AVCon!
