Howdy hey surprise surprise no art to go along with this post because it’s 11:30pm and I don’t want to force myself to draw till 1am to get it done when I have an exam tomorrow so you get a typed out version of this au because it’s rattling in my brain and I want to to be out in the world

Au name:Hero in Wonderland

Inspiration:Alice in Wonderland

So the plot is similar to Alice in Wonderland(I am in the process of reading the original story so as I read things may change and)

I’m not explaining the plot of this au right now because it’s to late to do that and I’m typing this on my phone, the plot is a, I type it on my laptop situation

Characters such as Bill, dodo, mouse etc. are not being assigned specific characters as they’re not as narratively important(not that many things are in Alice’s adventures in wonderland as the story is a load of nonsense and makes no sense at all, which I get is the point but it’s almost hard the read at points, though still fun, and this isn’t a critique of an over 100 year old story)

I have not quite made it to through the looking glass nor do I fully have everyone picked out for the major players in looking glass so be aware this list is subject to change(characters will also be reused)

This is just a statement in regards to who I’m making who, the characters I’m putting them in place of I’m using as a guide for how they will act in the au, they will not follow the exact characterizations of the original characters. All characters picked are based off the book versions of the characters not the movies (any movies) as I read I will change up who is who and make more solid ideas for how characters will act in the story

And example of this is RGB and Negative I may have both as the white knight.

Again this is a work in progress au j just needed to get it out of my head and out somewhere. This au will not be finished until I actually sit down and read through the rest of Alice in wonderland and then through the looking glass

I am using 2 tags for this au to separate when I’m referring to adventures in wonderland and when I’m referring to through the looking glass.

The Property of Hate - Thoughts, ideas and things that bug me

While we're all waiting for whatever Deus ex machina appears to get Hero and RGB out of the current quandary, I feel I need to verbalise some thoughts. Here be spoilers, obviously.

First things first: I really don't understand RGB's behaviour. Let me explain why. (Some of this is already a couple of days old, and therefore slightly outdated.)

When he introduces Hero to the World of Make Believe, he does not explain anything. You can argue that it's better for her to figure things out. But if he wants her to save the world, surely she should have some idea of the scenario that will eventually happen?

The trees. Clearly he recognises the tree in P.O.V. (since he tells the whole story later), but does actually not want Hero to do anything with or for it. Yes, he didn't know that Assok was keeping it alive. But surely he knows that restoring the sun should be a major part of saving the world?

The same issue crops up again when Hero remarks that now they have to liberate the other four trees. RGB does not seem to be aware that Hero falling onto a branch is what started the tree's regeneration and shedding of the ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛. But he also says that there's nothing they can do about the other ones (something that their experience with the next tree should have dispelled by now). So, again, he's not telling her what the purpose of her journey is, only what isn't.

If this is his standard way of dealing with heroes, I'm not surprised they all failed. The new update suggests he may have done this on purpose but I don't get what the point of that would've been. To stop the story from ending? The way things are going, it could just as well end despite his efforts, and setting heroes up to fail wouldn't have made a positive difference.

That said, both of the tree rescue operations so far would have failed without the help of former heroes (Assok in the first case, Melody in the second). Which begs interesting questions about their respective proximity.

When RGB arrived in this world, he failed, being the first hero in all but name, and by his own admission, he was pretty green. (Weirdly enough he already had the TV head, whereas the other heroes seemingly were only transformed after failing.) But currently, he seems to know a lot about this world, including stuff that happened long before his arrival. Where did he get that information from? Time?

If the folks from the emporium were heroes brought into this world by RGB, where did he get his shirt from? (Cell doesn't seem to be one, but Tailor...)

Why does Hate only intervene at two points so far? (First cutting Julienne and Melody out of the story, then snipping into Time's speech bubble, which seems pretty ineffective.) If she's really all-seeing and omnipotent, her lack of direct interaction is weird.

What's the point of the train in the desert? It's not sent by Hate (as witnessed by the blackout on her screen), and RGB has no idea what it's about. Honestly, it's the weirdest part of the story to me. It's captivating but feels like it doesn't really belong, and right after it, the whole story significantly loses steam (a-hem).

He traded his memories for time. But if I'm not mistaken, the iron only starts appearing after he was ironed by Tailor, so maybe we're all interpreting too much into those nightmares.

Returning to the question of his motivation. What is his goal? Going to the market was just an intermediate destination. He clearly seems to want to advance somewhere else. But again, he never tells Hero about it... who also never asks what her function as a hero is actually going to be.

Assok knew what to do with the isolator around the tree's roots, but that implies, again, that RGB must have explained the basics of the matter to them. He didn't seem like he wanted to tell Hero.

And without the liberation of the tree, he wouldn't have the ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ to trade in the market. What else could he have offered? Or was going to the market only something he decided to do after that happened?

Why are there suddenly three suns? Even RGB doesn't know. And we don't see if the phoenix-tree is going to join them. (However, since that bit is set in the future, we might learn about how the three suns came about soon. (Confirmed by Mod now, thankfully.))

Maybe freeing the first sun automatically led to the next one being liberated (since the first one sets into the sea and one part apparently sunk there), but so far no explanation.

Madras is the only other character openly aware that this world is ending. But she doesn't seem too fussed, despite RGB's later explanation that if the World of Make Believe ends, all other worlds end too.

As a commenter on SmackJeeves said, most of the concepts we've seen so far are negative (pun intended). Time is neutral (and on the protagonists' side) and the tempers seem somewhat positive. If Time and Hate are the two big factors, would love be the third, and be represented by the (shattered) sun?

EDIT: Another thing. In the current part of the story, it appears RGB is telling Hero that he died. Shouldn't this be more significant? After all, she asked on page 8 whether she's dead and he says "I hope not".

Now onto the positive. While I wouldn't put it beyond Mod to subvert our expectations again, I do expect a happy ending of sorts. Why? Well, consider that the current hero is front and center of the story, while all her predecessors only get time to shine in flashbacks and supporting roles. And of course Time is on her side!

glad folks liked the designs i doodled up 4 th hk/tpoh crossover au thing! heres the refs i did beforehand! little design notes under the cut!

Assok - This character was probably the easiest out of the three to design. I ended up doing their ref first! - they’re a vessel! i just felt it’d be fitting honestly - alternatives were going to be a worm-ish creature (like gorb) or a grub - assoks horns loop over and fuse back into their mask. i like to think this happened before they even hatched, so it’s unlikely this will cause any actual problems for them as they grow - assok’s horns are based off of elephant ears!

Hero - took the longest to come up with a proper design for. i went tested a couple different designs before settling on this one - hero is a lady bug! - while the bugs in hk dont seem to wear shoes, i couldnt pull myself to get rid of her boots. theyre just an integral part of her design for me - hero’s jacket is a combo of her raincoat and her sweater amours - hero’s shell integrates colors from the pyjamas she wears underneath her amour and her hair color - hero was originally going to be a mosskin at one point, before i settled on the lady bug instead.

RGB - while hes the most complex out of the three designs, hes the one that came to me the most easily - he is definitely a butterfly and not a moth - rgb’s wings will change color, typically having whatever emotions he’s feeling most dominate in the appearance, although his default/neutral is seen as above - theres no specific pattern to rgbs wings. i just went wild and did whatever, i certainly dont expect anyone to draw them consistently - rgb DOES wear a mask- coloration and presence inspired by both his screen and him talking about how the sun originally wore a mask - the reason rgb’s ref doesnt have a little blurb is because his wings took so much space on the canvas. SO i just decided to call him a name and be done with it.

Lotuna is clearly done based off a Lurantis, the made backstory is that she is a pigmy mantis of a species that died off and she thinks she is the only breathing member of it, now helping Fauneers in their task of animal preservation.

Assoke is a Daunter,previously an assassin whose family long descends from deepnest, he started as a bandit and with growing experience started on taking hitman tasks, assassinating assigned bugs, eventually he found himself growing interest with the Daunters’ lifestyle, eventually becoming a member.

I like the detail that Watcher only speaks in one word sentences

A thought on Dial’s design… his head says “ON AIR”. Later we know that Hate can listen in on him. D’you figure he ever makes himself “OFF AIR” other than when he sleeps?

Now this little here combined textbox gives me some thoughts…

I haven’t paid attention to the color of character text beyond Hero’s voice getting eroded by sand, but… boxes can be any color and shape, its not uncommon for characters to have separate fonts, but words themselves? Only ever black and white. Now this could be for the sake of no eyestrain against backgrounds, but... consider the dichotomy TPoH is building up over its story

white in this comic is associated with bad things quite often. Lies, [-----], Hate’s realm. The blinding, scorching, destructive light of the unmasked Sun. meanwhile, darkness hides the Market from danger, and nighttime is tied intrinsically with dreaming. in fact, we JUST had an entire chapter dedicated to framing the Dark as good, protective, and aligned with trees and water, other positive entities

For a minute I got all excited because Dial and the Butterfly both have white text, thinking “oh, my god. do all Hate-aligned characters have white text?” this gets jossed pretty hard by Julienne’s white text, as well as Cell and Tailor.

but while THINKING on that, I jumped back to Storytime in chapter 10 and check this out: the moment RGB starts his story, text is suddenly white. Most of it continues to be in white… except for these two sentences

AND CHECK THIS SHIT OUT: THE TEXT COLOR/SCENERY CHANGE COLOR TO THE FIVE COLORS OF RGB’S SCREEN. HOW DID I MISS THAT??

Considering my talent for creating OCs but chronic deficiency in building coherent and decisive stories for them, they’re all probably wandering this Market and world right now. at the very least most of them have spent a DAMN long time here before becoming realized (im so sorry guys im trying)

The ones that are complete as themselves but their stories are unstarted/uncertain? That’s like. most of them. whoops. maybe this will be the kick in the pants i need

BUT by the rules of this world, RGB doesn’t have a story… yet this is his story.

Y’know… Hero and RGB have very different ways of solving things. A little obvious, but- RGB’s solutions are always convoluted, require multiple steps, and are a little ridiculous. Or, he at least FRAMES them as complex. See: Click escape, train escape, entire scheme to find a Hero to right the world. Hero’s far more straightforward but her solutions are also more, like… sensible than RGB’s if that makes sense. If it was just RGB up on the burning heart his plan would have probably involved more "im very intelligent” and pizzaz, while Hero went for the comparatively simple “lets zipline” (versus RGB’s upcoming Click escape clusterfuck)

All of which to say, I got thinking on that with RGB being like “it’s a very complex topic I can’t possibly boil it down to anything smaller” and Hero describing what the Make Believe acts as in one word

So if this worlds objects come from the sea, the sea is connected to other worlds? And it was confirmed early on that ‘stuff’ and ‘thought’ are basically synonyms- these foreign objects can exist in the Make Believe because they’re infused with enough Stuff!

Hero and presumably all of the other Heroes came from outside the Make Believe… they are not unrealized characters, or they didn’t start out as such. To exist here like this, they must then be imbued with enough Stuff/Thought… if we specify Stuff as equivalent to creative thought… by jove! I’ve hit on (another) theory!

Haven’t all past Heroes been artists? Julienne is a dancer, Melody a musician, Dial works radio, Ticker is a craftsman, and Tailor works with textiles. TOby and Assok don’t have anything obvious, but if I was Hate, I’d turn puppeteers into motionless dolls and empty-voiced sock puppets.

1) do you believe in superstitions/the supernatural? if so, what beliefs do you have? I’m generally kinda inbetween on most stuff but at the same time I’m also the person that wants to go look for cryptids to befriend so I’m a bit more enthusiastic at the idea of cryptid stuff kinda at least?

7) biggest pet peeve? Having to explain really basic things to people for them to just deny it repetitively (like once I had to try to explain to a popular guy in my science class that bugs have instincts and I just. boi this is a 10th grade class,, why,) 

8) thoughts on space? the ocean? what would you rather explore? SPACE is amazing and so interestingly infinite and neat to think about!! It has infinite possibilities and it’s so pretty?? I love it. But the ocean  scares me since while it’s also mysterious we know that everything has been evolving for forever now and they have organisms with so many amazingly possible things that it’s just kinda scary to me? Like we know but we don’t. Like I’d love to research animals from the ocean and it’s really beautiful but just so scary to me to actually see the deep parts of. And I’m highkey afraid of sharks to be honest

9)  what trait do you value the most in people? I don’t know if it’s really a trait but I just like people who are understanding or listen? Like people who actually listen to you even if it’s something dumb and try and understand how to help you

10) how would you describe your aesthetic? I honestly have no idea as I’m a forever going identity crisis with no aesthetic but I guess crystals for sure at least? I have two aesthetic blogs at this point for the aesthetics I kinda have so I’d have to say sometimes it’s more monochromatic like a lot of greys with purples and greens I think but sometimes its more vibrant blue/yellow/black.

Tbh I see this kind of high-step run pose now and I’m just like ‘yep that’s modmad’s work’. I think its shown up a few times in her Duck comics and thats why?? RGB channeling his inner Gladstone

All the frames on this page are… actually starting to drip up. That’s an effect I’ve only attributed to Negative so far. Interesting?

Yo remember when RGB was saying that Doubts will eat you the entire fuck up and I posited that he’s seen it happen before? Who wants to bet seeing Hero halfway to that fate summoned up that there Grief

RGB wrecked counter = 3

He’s drowning in grief har har

BUT ALSO, the burns covering his body absolutely hurt but he doesn’t start screaming until the Grief starts literally drowning him. Hero getting a tear on his wrist later gives him a lil zap like static electricity, so... RGB is feeling the simultaneous sensations of THIRD DEGREE BURNS and ELECTROCUTION here

the only other time he’s even close to screaming in this much pain is getting ironed out by Tailor, but then, the iron isn’t literally killing him (this time) when doing that much as she might wish

The sheer shift in tone is just done so well. Negative’s silence. The scritchy-scratchy panels. Negative hooking a Fear head onto his cane to make a scythe. The distinct sense that the Fears are now Afraid (the hunters become the hunted).The static-y ‘distortion bar’ visuals overlaying the pages (best seen here tbh)

Oh goddamnit he wields fear as a weapon

Rose vines(?) straight up grow and spawn around him

Negatron was with us the entire time

Negative @Grief: what’re you gonna do with that big fist? Gonna hit me? Better make it count. Better make it hurt. Better kill me in one shot

On one hand, Negative could be genuinely so powerful that the Grief cuts its losses. On the other hand, Negative might hold no sorrow for the monolith to react and be drawn to. Negative is a visual inversion of RGB after all, it stands to reason everything is flipped. Cowardly, Afraid, and Regretful RGB inverts to a Stone Cold Boss-Ass Bitch who don’t Fear No Thing

So there’s a lot going on page 108 when Neggy reverts back

The heavily sketched panels diminish as RGB turns back on

His speech text actually changes. It goes yellow and blocky. An almost Assok kind of texture actually. And that yellow looks the same shade as the rose vines? Can Negative TALK?

Meanwhile, the roses themselves shatter as RGB falls over into “PLEASE STAND BY, WE ARE EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES”

Oh jesus it MOVES. Do you… just become more Doubts when you’re consumed like that?! Yikes. Good thing Hero doesn’t keep it on

The entirety of RGB is on standby, not just his clothes. Even his cane’s glitched out

Im sorry but his antenna… they’re just fucking dead on the ground. Totally boneless
