Traintober 2023: Big World
(A little bit of a story from my humanised TTTE AU This Is Sodor: The Age of Iron, concerning Aus Steam '88)
For Your Consideration
NWR Head Office, 1988
The Fat Controller looked at his calendar and roster of locomotives for the weeks and months ahead. It was coalescing nicely.
The plans for sending a group of Sudrian locos in their human form to the great Aus Steam '88 locomotive festival that was going to be held at Spencer Street Station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, was heading apace.
What a clever idea for Flying Scotsman to suggest, using the Australian Steam Festival as a cover to send some of the Sudrian locos to teach the local steam engines how the NWR survived decades of onslaught of persecution; from the LMS, from creditors, from the BR, from Beeching and Marples and the whole bloody lot of them.
What an honor would it be for them to meet not just Scotty but the Australian locomotive rights radicals VR H220 Heavy Harry, VR R707 and NSWGR's 3801 on their own metals.
It would give some of the locos a nice little experience outside of their Sudrian bubble... get them to see the world, to a place where the hateful Lokodammerung was successful and where the preservation movements were running on fumes. Maybe it would pacify and humble them a little, make them see how difficult it really was to be a locomotive and not have what the NWR provided.
He had heard that Heavy Harry's residence at the North Williamstown Railway Museum at the former Newport Workshops... was not the best. It wasn't exactly the luxurious surrounds of the National Railway Museum in York.
Or that R707 was put aside by the VR in spite of being the closest thing the state had to a premier passenger locomotive... and was saved by volunteers fixing him up themselves.
He'd hoped the Sudrian locos would draw lessons from how harsh things could be outside of their little island.
Or that was the fantasy.
The reality would be they would likely get drunk and indulge in all kinds of sin, and he didn't necessarily blame them. The human world outside of Sodor was as exotic to them as railways outside the little island.
This the Fat Controller pondered. Ever since that TV show began airing, he's had to keep its star Thomas under wraps. It wouldn't do for him to get captured in the papers doing something silly, especially since the books and TV shows were a bowdlerized version of what he got up to...
So no, not Thomas, not this time.
He thought of his Strike Trio, and against common sense he had the compulsion to send them. He knew Gordon would be keen to meet a foreign Pacific express passenger locomotive and to meet his brother, and maybe perhaps the Hudsons in attendance.
He pondered Henry and James. Henry had worked pretty hard and he partied harder, but he had been pretty well behaved this past decade after being angry and restless in the 70s... And James, well, he knew that giving him a special job often made him more tractable and agreeable to work with.
Just to make sure, he put Edward down as a sort of unofficial chaperone. If this experiment worked, he would send Thomas out into the world at some point.
Not now though, not while the attention was upon him with a whole bloody TV show named after him having just screened in Australia a year previous and the world's attention was on the little blue tank engine.
"Charles, bring me to Tidmouth Sheds when the listed four have been properly hostled... I have something wonderful to tell them..."

Agitation 3.6 Live Reactions
(This is me, writing reactions as I read, because why the fuck not. They're not complete, mature thoughts taken after I sit back and evaluate what I've read. Consider them as such)
“Think of it as a game,” Lisa said, “A high stakes variant of cops and robbers.”
Ooh this bit. I've seen it referenced a lot in the fandom discussions, but never seen the conversation reproduced or redone in fic (probably because if it happens in the AU, it happens so close to the canon version there's no need to rewrite it or anything)
“I think,” I ventured, “That it’s a little closer to real cops and robbers than the schoolyard game.” “No, no.  Hear me out.  Grown adults running around in costume?  Making up code names for themselves?  It’s ridiculous, and we know it’s ridiculous, even if we don’t admit it out loud.
ehhhhhhh, I mean... she's not wrong exactly, but it's also not ridiculous because real people are really dying. In RL, if someone went around in a costume with codenames trying to fight crime, then yeah, absolutely, that's ridiculous, even if they made actual progress somehow.
But if that same costumed weirdo could fly, or fart fire or w/e, then it's a lot harder to not take seriously.
Maybe we have some agenda or goals, but at the end of the day, we’re getting our thrills, blowing off steam and living a second life.
yeah, Lisa, no. That's... no.
Then there’s the crazies.  The people who are fucked up in the head, maybe dangerous if there’s not something or someone to help keep them in line.  The people who take it all too seriously, or those guys you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of, even if they didn’t have powers.  Lung, Oni Lee, Heartbreaker,” she paused.  “Bitch.”
Way to add this as an afterthought. Also, like most of the Empire 88 (if not all of it) falls into this category too. I get they've barely been mentioned yet, but Kaisar and Co are definitely crazy and taking it too seriously.
Lisa paused, “Right.  But you have to understand, ninety percent of what goes on when you’re in costume?  It’s the first group.  Adults in costumes playing full contact cops and robbers with fun-as-fuck superpowers and toys.
And people dying, having their property destroyed (and ruining their livelihoods), being crippled or physiologically scarred for life...
Yeah. It's all fun silliness 90% of the time.
(I get that Lisa is selling this to Taylor to convince her that this is all cool, but still, does she actually believe this on some level? I get that her power probably makes her cynical but my god, Tattle-bitch, fuck off)
But what good is having a team if there’s no competition?” “Which is where we come in,” I figured out where she was going. “Exactly.  At the end of the day?  We’re not doing much harm.  Property damage, theft.  A few civilians get hurt if they don’t move out of the way fast enough.
Yeah, totally, that's the only way civilians get hurt.
I mean, if all the villains were as nice and soft as the Undersiders, or at least most of them, sure. I don't think Lisa's wrong to an extent, but the Undersiders are very much the minority, and you guys still have the ability to really fucking hurt people.
Are there readers that actually buy this? I buy Taylor buying this to an extent, given her mindset and so forth, rn, though I doubt she 100% buys it, but equally, it sometimes feels like some of the fans actually buy this mindset.
“Compared to the psychos and the monsters out there, it’s almost in the city’s interests to keep us in circulation.  Far as I see it, we’re not that much better or worse than the so called good guys.  We face more risk at the end of the day, with the possibility of jail time and physical danger, but we get a better payoff.  We just took the path that was higher risk, higher reward.”
You are better than most of the alternatives, sure, but while it's true that the heroes would have a lot lower profile without the villains (and if there were no villains the heroes might not stay heroes what with all that conflict urging or w/e of the Shards) but as far as Lisa knows, the heroes could just... you know, use their powers constructively if there weren't villains eating up their time.
So yeah, no.
“I’m not sure,” I said, carefully, “That I buy all that.”
Smart girl
“No? Then why don’t they send people like Über straight to the Birdcage after his trial, like they are with Lung?
That is a stupid question, Lisa. The Birdcage isn't just a catch all for every supervillain. It's a nightmare blackbox you shove the worst (or the alleged worst, anyway) into. It's a "Break Glass In Case of Scion" Box. It's certainly not a place you shove Uber and Leet into unless they cross lines. We don't put people into maximum security prisons just for assault and theft, usually (Which, AFAIK, is all Uber and Leet have done largely - AFAIK, they haven't killed anyone)
Sure, there’s the three strike rule, and he’ll get sent to the Birdcage eventually, but the people in charge have to maintain some plausible deniability.”
Because the US government totally wants villains running around this much for the... merchandising money? Like, there's not trusting the police, the government, etc, and there's... this.
Again, I suspect Lisa doesn't quite believe this, but still.
“But the real evidence to my ‘cops and robbers’ theory,” Lisa continued, “Is the reaction you see when someone crosses the line.  You’ve heard about it happening.  Someone finds out another cape’s secret identity, goes after the cape’s family.  Or a cape wins a fight and decides his downed opponent isn’t in a state to say no if he’s feeling lusty?  Word gets around, and the cape community goes after the fucker.  Protecting the status quo, keeping the game afloat.  Bitter enemies call a truce, everyone bands together, favors get called in and everyone does their damndest to put the asshole down.”
Or, you know, it could be that some people have standards? I mean, I get what you're saying, about protecting the game, the unwritten rules, etc, but equally, like... no? Yeah, when someone crosses a line everyone goes after them because that's like... the whole point of lines.
“Like we do with the Endbringers,” I said.  I sheathed my knife. “Holy fuck,” Lisa said, slapping the sides of the steering wheel with her hands.  I think if the van had been moving, she would have hit the brakes for emphasis.  Traffic was starting to move, though, so she started up the car and put it into gear, “Twice, you bring up the Endbringers in as many minutes.  You’re being morbid.  What’s going on?”
Because they're the giant fucking elephants in the room for the setting.
It was hard to talk to Lisa, as much as I liked her as a person.
You barely know her, christ Taylor, I know you're affection starved and shit but man you dove headfirst into this.
If I said something, would that give her the puzzle piece she needed to figure me out?
heheheheh, too late.
I was counting on this ruse continuing, whether it was because I enjoyed the temporary companionship of Brian, Lisa and Alec, or because I wanted to get Grue, Tattletale, Regent and Bitch carted off to jail and prove Armsmaster wrong.  I was aware how paradoxical those two interests were.
Sooner or later, something will have to give.
She went on, “See, I know you.  Believe it or not, I like you.  Did from the time I saw you on that roof, opposite Lung.  You know how we fear the unknown?  Well, I know stuff, that’s my whole thing, and that motherfucker is one of the very few people who can spook me.  You, Taylor, stood up to him.”
Taylor "Nah, I'd Win" Hebert
(Does she actually say that in the story, or is that just a fan thing?)
“So this guy or this girl that’s got you down in the dumps?  I say fuck them.  They don’t know you.  They don’t know what you’re capable of.”
This is true. How much does Lisa know about this? God, Lisa's power is gonna suck to work with come fic writing time, balancing what she knows and what she doesn't.
“Who uses words like doldrums, anymore?”
Fair point
“In twenty minutes or so, we’re going to be leaving there, tens of thousands of dollars richer, the adrenaline rush of victory pumping through our veins,” Lisa’s voice was barely above a whisper, “Now tell me.  Can you visualize that?”
"What this country needs is a short, victorious war to stem the tide of revolution."
-Vyacheslav von Plehve, Russia’s Minister of the Interior, before starting the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905
(I'm not sure if this quote is apocryphal or not, I first stumbled upon it as an epigrah in a sci-fi novel, but it makes the point)
“Liar,” she said.  Then she winked at me, “It’s okay.  An hour from now, you’ll be rolling in money and laughing about how pessimistic you were.  Promise.”
Nice to know Tattletale can be so hilariously wrong.
As I opened the car door and hopped out into the pouring rain, I managed to say the words without choking on them, “Let’s go rob a bank.”
Crime Machine Go BRRR!

Was hältst du vom neuen Epic First Run-Programm von Epic Games?

ANNOUNCEMENT: NOT A HELLO, BUT NOT A GOODBYE EITHER
omg hi ... im like . ashamed to come back after saying brief hiatus in october and then disappearing off the face of the earth til FEBRUARY but under the cut i will be explaining myself and the following, if youre interested (and a tl;dr at the very bottom if you don’t wanna scroll thru this obnoxiously long post):
the reason(s) i was gone for so long
what i was doing during that time (its just a personal account yall can scroll past this idrc)
the status of those um . halloween requests
the future of this account
i. so . Hiatus .
i know. i know . i probably mentioned it when i made the announcement post, but my mental health likes to go on one of those rides. yknow the ones where you go like up rlly fast then down maybe and then up then DOWN .... its like that. i needed a break and every time i wanted to come back or thought about it, something would happen and i would get stuck in my own head.
a big reason for getting stuck in my head was (and i hate to admit this ... i hate to admit that i have Insecurities On The Internet) my feelings of inadequacy regarding my writing. i love to plot fics, i love concepts and characters and making little headcanons but i dont ... know if i love writing rn. and i thought for the longest time that like . whatever ill just push thru it its fine ill be fine but it kinda wasnt lmao you can kinda see it in my halloween reqs and what become of them when i get to that but i began to feel like nothing i had put out or would put out would hold up prose wise (and normally i dont feel like this im much more “idc its my life im living it” but thats not a rant for tumblr LMAO). i still feel like that -- like im better as a reader than a writer. but . You Know :-)
tl;dr: mental state go brrrrr
ii. anywhere here’s wonderwall
when i left, i was in a steadily decreasing mental and emotional state, made worse by a situation at work that really was a case of petty jealousy on my end and rlly isnt very consequential now despite how much pain and resentment it gave me when it Was a problem so i wont get into it. the tl;dr of november and december was me using work as an crutch and distraction -- i know my job, i do it well, it helped me not think about my responsibilities and obligations and inadequacies. of course, as the holiday season grew busier n busier i was scheduled so often that i moved 88 or so miles (according to my apple watch, which i ONLY wear at work since im never anywhere else outside my house) and fell into a cycle of showering n sleeping at my house before going back the next day. (theres definitely something to be said abt capitalism and “grind culture” here but once again its not the time or place snsjkdfds)
at the turn of the new year, i happened to remember a birthday card i hadnt filed away for safekeeping from a friend of mine that id been horribly out of touch with til that point. i started crying because i realized how out of touch id been in general up until that point. the month of january was great for me: i was focused, happy, and in a much better place than i had been before. the end of it brought me down focus wise and im hoping that enough time away from my distractions will refocus me bc i ... need it LMAO and though ive burned out from that level of productivity and gotten distracted again im ... trying to stay positive which i think is the most i can do 😁👍🏼
media wise, i got real into stardew valley (but burned out bc i played it extensively as a way to wind down after work), the pokemon platinum romhack renegade platinum (still havent finished it bc of school n i played it w the intent to see if i could nuzlocke it ... bitch its so hard but its so fun bc of it), briefly assassins creed: odyssey (im one of those ppl who completes an entire region before i move to the next so you can tell i burned out of that one + wouldnt have the time to properly devote to it even if i didnt), got back into genshin impact after pulling for xiao (after not touching it for like . months), and danganronpa. yes . danganronpa 😐 i Know. i stopped playing it after the second trial of the first game bc i was so hurt by the outcome and picked it up in late january only to get sucked in (thank god i had the foresight to buy the second and third games during the steam winter sale). rn im at the start of chapter 4 if anyone wants to come in my asks and um . talk to me abt danganronpa
tl;dr: I’m Into Danganronpa Now
iii. you realize halloween was three months ago right
i mentioned this in the first section, but i love to plot things. every request is plotted or at least has a solid foundation. i had fun detailing what concept i wanted to go with considering what i was given, and there were some bangers i might touch up in the future. but heres whats going to happen to the requests themselves:
there are two finished requests. one will be posted tomorrow and the other will be touched up (just bc i finished it doesnt mean its good 🧍‍♂️) and scheduled for next saturday. as for the ones i never got around to ...
i will not be finishing those requests. i hate to be That Person, but i feel like we all expected this 🧍‍♂️ what i will do is post all of my notes for each request in batches -- requests that have an @ to go with them will be mentioned in the post proper, but anon asks will be pictured. (there are some asks that came from blogs who are now deactivated but i wrote down all the prompts and remember most of those askers so ill cross that bridge when i get there) there will most likely be an excerpt or two simply bc i think i mightve written a few plot points or interactions in the form of bullet points. i rlly am sorry about doing this but i remember looking at my notion doc with all the prompts and feeling ... like i wasnt measuring up n it wasnt just to myself or to some intangible concept of “other” id constructed but it was instead to those who requested n actually WANTED to see and hear and read my writing and i ...... im gonna admit thats another big reason i avoided this site.
regardless, youll definitely get what i have (and likely more than just my bullet points and illegible handwriting).
tl;dr: im sorry. what i have in terms of plot, concept, and interaction for every request will be posted, but i cant say ill ever complete them and mean it.
iv. so what now?
well i mean . im not entirely sure how sold i am on haikyuu in the content creation department (as a creator n to a lesser extent, as a consumer). as mentioned previously, its no longer my primary focus. it doesnt mean im not into haikyuu anymore; i have a lot of love for those boys but i cant rlly say im even caught up w recent fandom activity and also havent even finished s4 pt2 LMAO thats on my to do list
and despite all that, i still want to share my plots n concepts and snippets and maybe even fics. it wont happen anytime soon. it might not even happen. but i mean . its better than me saying i wont write ever again shjdkfs but either way ill probably use this blog as a personal blog w the occasional ask game for dialogue prompts (those are always so fun i love making up aus to fit like . the most mundane prompts)
as for my works (past and any potential future), ive opened an ao3 acc here n ill be editing n possibly expanding on my old works to post there. tumblr, to me, is The x reader hub, but i figure more x reader fics on ao3 is never a bad thing.
ill be deleting/posting drafted posts to the queue since they were all meant to be queued anyway as well as (sorry again 🧍‍♂️) deleting or answering asks in the inbox. (moots if you get a notif from me saying i rbed your post from months ago ... mind your business) im very hard to get ahold of and its ... a problem. expect an overhaul of the nav n shit to reflect my new direction n also because i feel like i cant tell if my passion for carrd is shared by the majority HSDKLFS maybe its better to read my info in a normal post ykwim .......
and of course . if youve read all this n decided im no longer worth the follow, i sure as hell cant stop you. thank you for wanting to, at some point, hear what i have to say -- it means more than you think.
tl;dr: writing will be edited and reposted to ao3, this blog will be a personal blog with a hint of writing (sometimes)
Tumblr media
the tl;dr to end all tl;drs:
im back! i wont be as active as i used to due to a lessened interest in haikyuu in general, but i have an ao3 acc now where all my past work will be edited, possibly expanded, and reposted. any future work will also find itself there. my halloween requests will be posted in batches as incomplete concepts, plots, and snippets of scenes; i wont be promising to finish any of them.
there are still fic concepts im attached to and want to finish, but i cant promise any more writing on my end. this blog will be a personal blog with maybe writing, not a writing blog with my personal thoughts all over it.
regardless if you stick around or not, its been crazy sexy cool (equal emphasis) being on haikyuu tumblr even tho i wasnt around for long ... even tho its not my main focus anymore, im still excited to see what the future might hold 🤝
love, ari 💌

143 We’re the Millers (13)
144 All is Bright (13)
145 Defending Your Life (91)
146 Christmas Chronicles (18) I maintain that most new xmas movies are terrible, particularly now that Netflix churns them out like eggnog every year.
147 Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse (18)
148 Reindeer Games (00) what did I say about Affleck??!? WHAT DID I SAY
149 Palm Springs (20)
150 Happiest Season (20)
151 *Metropolitan (90) it’s definitely a Christmas movie
152 Black Christmas (74)
THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)
I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough.
TV Series
01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).
02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?
03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock.
04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives.
05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end.
06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!
07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting.
08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**
09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!
10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening.
11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux.
12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed.
13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be!
14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.

Klaroline fanfic update: A Beautiful Symmetry
Tumblr media
Working on a sequel to my Klaroline series, A Beautiful Symmetry: Chapter 88: Part 1 - Klaroline AU Week - Shrieky Clean. Here’s a quick peek:
Chapter 128: Part 2 - Shrieky Clean
Some men do a typical dinner-and-movie date. Some get a little more creative with a romantic picnic along the Mississippi or a steamboat cruise. But then, there’s the rare man who flies you to northeastern India for a first date to dine on the most exquisite steamed pig brains with black cardamom and Bhut jolokia chillies. Caroline was quite fond of brains.
The warm glow of the torches picked up the flecks of hybrid gold in Klaus’ gaze. “Are you quite sure about your dinner, sweetheart?” He nodded toward the bartender underneath the thatched roof who accidentally brushed his hand along Caroline’s ass when he brought their drinks earlier. “It’s no trouble at all to upgrade your meal.”
She rolled her eyes at his teasing-yet-completely-serious tone. As a zombie, human brains were a culinary necessity, but she demanded ethically sourced food. And Bartender Gropey Creeperton wasn’t on the menu. Yet.

VR A2 4-6-0 No 986 "Spirit of Warrigul" aka "Pluto"
Tumblr media
Now for an OC other than Heavy Harry. They call him "Spirit of Warrigul" but he only answers to 'Pluto" ("We dub this locomotive. "Spirit of Warrigul', "Bugger... I have one of those silly Pom-styled names now... farrrrrk..."). He is the grouchiest prick on Melbourne's railways... he is Heavy Harry's oldest friend.
Modded every 6 ways from Sunday since 1915 from a type that was first built in 1907, its a miracle he's survived... and survived he did.
He survived almost getting superseded by the S-class Pacifics, the mass withdrawls and scrappings, sitting in a public park having possums shit down his funnel for more than a decade. Now they've restored him and he chuffs pulling specials every month or so for SteamRail. And he still likes making mordant comments on everything.
Here he is in early 1988 chatting with a humanoid Heavy Harry about the upcoming AusSteam '88 locomotive show at Spencer Street.
“Those Gresley boys need to be told they’re not kings of the railways everywhere! Other locos exist as well and work just as hard if not harder and for longer…”
“Ah. Plutes… you’re such a grumpy arse. I wish you could come along…" says Harry.
“You know how much I dislike the human form, Har’. I’m glad you found enjoyment and freedom in yours but… I just can’t.”

Thank you for subscribing, it’s free, and it encourages me! In 1841, two brothers Albert and Hermann Wernecke founded a small brewery in Magdeburg, Germany. On this site since 1843 with its own 40 horsepower steam engine. The plant changed its name to Actien Brauerei , and large buildings were built from 1887-88 to further develop beer production, adding a cooler, a fountain, larger steam engines, malting operations and even its own station. The company had 180 employees in 1888. In 1941, the establishment became the largest brewery in the province with 680 workers. After the Second World War, more than 70% of the buildings were destroyed by artillery, By the time the GDR came to power, the facility had produced more than 14.5 million gallons of beer since its foundation. The brewery continued production until the Diamant brand slowly disappeared from the market. In 1994, the brewery was closed and the facility was abandoned. I keep thinking about where Solas would fit into my Modern Thedas AU and I think after talking with Mimi and what I’ve talked with Senka about I have a pretty solid base for what the timeline is going to be overall ( which should most likely be on Varric’s blog but lmao i had to name eight ages ).
so a couple of things about the Atomic Age AU --- ( a lot of this is overall history since Solas ends up having a historical degree )
one. The Dragon Age saw to the inquisition, but Solas remained in limbo for ages after. The Inquisition was reborn with Justinia V at the helm, without the threat of Corypheus looming over them. The Divine Conclave was critically panned on both sides. The mages felt there was little retribution while the Templars regained their position within the chantry walls. Justinia V did make amends that would later be looked back fondly on by mage historians, for she was the first divine to make the circles non-compulsory for those who completed their harrowing, which lead to a backlash from Templars and those critical of mage freedoms. It was the first step in ages for equality for mages, yet did little in ushering in any laws on rights within the largest nations in Thedas. Ferelden would be the first to offer laws protecting mages, in 10:18 Gilded, It specifically for mages who to live outside the Chantry after completing their education and passing their Harrowing, many critics cited it as the first step of a downfall for Ferelden. Antiva and Nevarra would follow with similar laws in 10:23 and 10:44 respectively. The Free Marches would begin convening as the United States of the Free Marches and would pass a bill with different wording, protecting mages of any kind in 10:50 Gilded due to their high population of Dalish Clans. The rest of the world would soon follow with similar protections.
two. The Divine Conclave of 10:31 Gilded began the first talks for equality for elves. It would take until 12:32 Reconstruction for true equality for most elves in the nation of Orlais. The Free Marches elected equal rights for mages and protected lands for Dalish clans in 11:23 Steam allowing them to become part of the United States of the Free Marches while still allowing them to maintain their internal hierarchy and autonomy.
three. Orlais lagged behind in protections for mages, for good and bad reasons. Orlais had a strong sense of tradition and held onto many of their old ways -- yet the blame was not entirely on the shoulders of the Orlesian people, for many people were more accepting than the government, the Chantry simply lagged behind. After the death of Divine Justinia V in 9:78 Dragon ( at her Summer House near Val Chevin ). The Grand Clerics travelled to Val Royeaux to elect a new Divine in the Grand Consensus. It took two weeks to elect a new Divine who was much more conservative than Justinia V, and reiterated that Magic was the corruption of their world and that the Maker did not look fondly upon it, causing a power struggle within Orlais ( between the Imperial Family and the Divine Chantry ). It was not until 12:32 Reconstruction after a war between Ferelden and Orlais did the Imperial Family and the Court of Orlais begin talks about equal rights for all peoples of Orlais, including Mages and Elves.
four. Between the ages of Steam and Discovery, there was a decrease in mage births, and many nations discussed for years about discontinuing the costly Circle Programmes. While the Chantry helped fund these programmes, in the Machine Age -- the role of the Chantry shifted and Templars retreated solely to Chantry grounds and were no longer as present in the Nation’s militaries or cities. The Templars would remain in the Chantries, the Circles and in some cases the University systems ( due to the number of Mages within the Universities ). Val Royeaux would be the only exception to this, for the Templars maintained a heavy presence in the Imperial City.
five. The United Nations of Thedas was created in the Crown Age. It was the first time that The Tevinter Imperium, Par Vollen, Orlais, and Ferelden began peace talks and other international talks. The United States of the Free Marches would join the United Nations in 16:12 Revolution and Antiva and Nevarra would follow within the next four years. Rivian would also later levy for membership later in the Revolution Age. This lead to what would what some historians would consider the first Age of Long Lasting Peace in Thedas. In 16:34 Revolution the United Nations of Thedas came to a consensus on many civil rights but the most famous right of them all was the Magical Unity and Civil Liberties of the United Nations of Thedas Amendment, better known as the Mage Rights Act.
six. In 14:78 Discovery the war between Par Vollen and the Tevinter Imperium drew to a close as the Seheron Accords were signed, bringing peace to the Seheron Islands since they had been plagued by constant war since the early Steel Age. The Accords were signed with secrecy, and many of the people of Seheron were concerned about how their lives would be affected. In the Blessed Age, Par Vollen had taken back Seheron in a bloody coup d’etat, freeing slaves from their masters and slaying those loyal to Tevinter. It was within the Steam Age that Seheron was once again reclaimed by Tevinter, only for Par Vollen to reclaim it in the end of the Machine Age. When the Accords were read, it granted Par Vollen the land of Seheron but allowed citizens to hold dual citizenship, and began satellite rule, by letting an electorate into Seheron, much like had occurred in Par Vollen early in the Reconstruction Age. Later in the Crown Age, Seheron would create their own government as Par Vollen and Tevinter lost grip of the citizens and the Independent Nation of Seheron was formed in 15:88 Crown. The Independent Nation of Seheron would join the United Nations of Thedas in the Industrial Age.
seven. Par Vollen and the Tevinter Imperium also went through major changes between the Gilded Age to the Revolution Age. For in the Steam Age, Tevinter went through it’s most drastic shift, internal politics in the Dragon Age had allowed this to happen, and Tevinter began opening its borders to outsiders and ended the period of Isolationism that had been in effect since the Tevinter Imperium lost Seheron in the Blessed Age. It was slow going, for Tevinter mainly traded with the Kingdom of Nevarra and The United States of the Free Marches in the Steam Age, yet slowly they opened their doors. It was the Imperial Senate that elected this new open door policy, and the Archon signed it into law, however, the Imperium Chantry was not as thrilled by this new open door policy, for Nevarra’s goods brought the influence of the Andrastian Chantry. Par Vollen saw a different kind of shift within their own nation, a shift away from traditionalism that took many ages, many of the details are unknown. However, Par Vollen truly joined the International stage after the Seheron Accords with a government less influenced by the Qun, yet the Qun still played a significant role in day to day life in the nation of Par Vollen. Many who live in Par Vollen have names and families, which is vastly different than what the nation had once been. This came about in the Reconstruction Age when a wave of openness swept many nations of Thedas, and many citizens of the Nations of Thedas demanded an overhaul of their governments. Yet, the interworkings of Par Vollen are still shrouded in mystery, and the Qun seems to still have a hold on the nation, for many jobs, and places in society are still assigned by the government.
seven. The Nation of the Anderfells continues to rely on the Wardens, however, most Wardens have fallen into the shadow. The United Nations of Thedas passed an amendment in the Civil Liberties Bill restricting the Joining to every ten years in Weisshaupt, or if someone is dying of the Blight. There has not been a Blight since the Dragon Age. The Anderfells are not part of the United Nations of Thedas, nor do they wish to be. The King of the Anderfells is much more present. However, the nation leans on Weisshaupt for leadership.
eight. The main concern of the United Nations of Thedas is the severely weakened veil and the sharp increase in Mage births since the start of the Industrial Age. Mages are at an all-time high since the Dragon Age, for Chantry historians had stated that Mage births were in decline after the Divine Conclave in the Mid-Dragon Age. Yet, the veil has weakened, and many are starting to feel the effects.
nine. Nine ( including the current ) ages have passed since the Fifth Blight. They are respectively: Gilded, Steam, Reconstruction, Machine, Discovery, Crown, Revolution, Industrial and the current Atomic. a full timeline of what I have written about is here!
ten. orzammar hates everything and doesn’t want anything to do with fade bullshit. They continue to trade with nations and create impressive designs.
So what does this mean for Solas?
one. Solas awoke in 17:77 Industrial in the United States of the Free Marches. He was at first confused by the state of the world he awoke to, but quickly adapted. He was noticed by the Wardens in 17:93 Industrial after completing a doctorate in Neo-Classical History in Ferelden under the name Solas Rudolph. He travelled for a while after this, specialising in Elvhen and teaching interim and adjunctly at a couple of universities before settling in Kirkwall in the mid 18:00s. For the love of the Maker, please do not call him Professor.
two. Solas settled in Kirkwall, more famously the Midtown sector ( the cultural hub ) and opened his own studio. He teaches adjunctly at Kirkwall University and paints in his studio, he also dabbles in photography and attends local gallery showings, sometimes for his own his shows. He is considered eclectic by his own friends. He does not drive, for the traffic in Kirkwall is terrible and prefers to bike. He’s an unregistered mage since mage registration became legal in Kirkwall in the late 18:30s. He owns one shirt not covered in paint or made of hemp ( or tweed ). He’s that guy in starbucks you HATE.
three. He is still trying to bring down the veil, however --- he’s needed very little help. Nor has he gone for his foci.
im dying guys i love my au.
