I am so THRILLED to announce another fantastic resource to improve welfare for avian patients! Dr Alicia McLaughlin and I have collaborated to bring you another Fear Free® course. In this program we go over the Fierce/Fearful to Friendly (F2F) procedure that can be used when a bird wants distance as a reinforcer. This can include situations in which the bird is showing a fear response to people, objects (such as medical instruments), places, etc. It makes my heart very happy to see this information reaching more practitioners and in turn helping more animals. The course looks and sounds fantastic and includes fun interactive graphics. I hope you will take advantage of this awesome resource to help improve avian welfare https://fearfreepets.com/courses/addressing-fear-aggression-in-avian-patients-a-constructional-approach/ #fearfree #fearfreeavian #fearfreecertifican #distanceasarreinforcer #fiercetofriendly #aggressivebehavior #fearresponses #avianmedicine #avianbehavior #parrotbehavior #constructionalapproach #aviandiplomate #veterinarymedicine #veterinarybehavior https://www.instagram.com/p/CcV63b1l86C/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Toucans are often only thought of in the context of cereal or because of their bright and silly bills. A little known fact is that toucans, and their smaller cousins, the toucanet, are skilled predators who routinely predate nests of other birds, and the occasional lizard. #wildlifewednesday #avianbehavior #costarica #conservation #lascruces #ots #ecology #biodiversity #birding #behappy #mytinyatlas #beawesome #exposeyourselftobeauty

Tears of joy. Not for me, but for animal welfare! When sharing “new” information gets this kind of reception it gives me so much hope for the future of animal training. I am thrilled to share my presentation “Beyond ABC: Improving Interventions and Animal Welfare with Nonlinear Contingency Analysis” was given a Welfare Advancement Award at the joint ABMA/IMATA conference @theabma @imata_trainers I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Israel Goldiamond for describing this information, to Joe Layng and Paul Andronis for their continued dissemination of this work and their mentorship, and to Jesus Rosales Ruiz for helping me better understand negative reinforcement, exposure therapies, and extinction. And special thanks to Annette Pedersen, Dianne Scott, Hillary Hankey @avianbehavior Cari Clements, Sean Will, Maasa Nishimuta @npo_caawt and many others who have given me strength and words of wisdom at just the right time. https://www.instagram.com/p/CpqCKFeuVfn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A must listen podcast for the progressive trainer! Are you the kind of trainer that is interested in moving forward? Has your training evolved and continues to evolve? If you have enjoyed my most recent livestreams and/or our Tower Talks then you have got to listen to this podcast episode. Hillary Hankey from @avianbehavior Avian Behavior International and the Avian Behavior Lab takes a deep dive into how new ideas, women and organizations can be lifted in the animal training industry. https://avian-behavior.org/31-negative-reinforcement/ #cognitivedissonance #animaltrainingpodcast #negativereinforcement #avianbehaviorlab #avianbehaviorinternational #hillaryhankey #animaltrainingconference #progressiveanimaltraining #newtrainingideas https://www.instagram.com/p/CPLlUJelNtY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Meet the speakers: Are you ready for some uber cool bird training? I thought so! Check out www.AFGOATS.com speaker Hillary Hankey. Hillary Hankey’s first interest in animal behavior began with the documentation of the family cat’s daily habits, including hours of cat naps, on her dad’s camcorder as practice for becoming a National Geographic researcher. Her fascination turned to birds when she began accruing her parrots in her childhood bedroom, and has been training birds ever since. Hillary has worked for zoos as an animal trainer and keeper, and in 2010 she started parrot behavior consulting in her free time, a practice designed to help parrot owners utilize positive reinforcement for better relationships. She also volunteered to raise toucans and consulted with wildlife education facilities, working with exotic mammals and reptiles. In 2013, Hillary left the comfort of a predictable paycheck and started Avian Behavior International @avianbehavior , a bird training and education organization. With ABI, she has stayed with the Waurá tribe in the backwaters of the Amazon, flown birds through the Rainbow Arch of Lake Powell, produced free flying bird programs for zoological parks, and explored and developed new ways to help others contribute to conserving our planet through avian ambassadors. Through ABI and later, her online membership program the Avian Behavior Lab, she continues to set goals to help animal trainers in a deeper, more meaningful way and be part of progressive movement with high standards of ethical behavior management and the presentation of free-flying birds in educational programs in zoos and similar institutions everywhere. https://www.instagram.com/p/CD4WUXGlCjD/?igshid=1r8w7qbtjxrpn

New podcast episode available! My favorite kind of animal trainers are those who break the rules!! What I mean by that is that they are the ones who question everything in the name of doing it better. That is why this episode is entitled “Progressive Bird Training.” My special guest Hillary Hankey @avianbehavior is one of those trainers who spends every day analyzing, studying and practicing the art and science of animal training with a diverse collection of birds in Southern California. And her results have demonstrated that indeed we can always improve. She describes the spectacular immersive free flight experience guests, students, clients and interns can have when they visit her facility. We discuss practices that can improve the welfare of birds trained for educational presentations, as well as enhance the guest experience. This means diving into how we create motivation, collection planning, the types of behaviors we train and altering guest’s expectations. We also discuss the current trend of free flying companion parrots and some of the things pet owners need to take into consideration. Visit the episode webpage to see video clips and learn more about her online education program the Avian Behavior Lab and future on site workshops. Skilled trainers know that behaviors we often consider basic are really quite complex. We pay attention to every little detail so that the animal can be successful. It also makes it less likely we will see fear responses or aggressive behavior. I watch this video and see so many good things this trainer is doing to help Hillary Hankey’s macaw Leo from @avianbehavior look forward to stepping up. Join me in Warsaw this Saturday for our bird training workshop and discover what I look for.
