How to Respond to Backhanded Compliments and Other Passive-Aggressive Comments at Work
Backhanded compliments--your holiday treasure!
The holidays are here, and that means eating and drinking and generally over-doing it, whether at work or at home. This is a time for communication skills and tactics for handling all the well-meaning and not-so-well meaning people with whom you'll be socializing. This video is designed to prepare you for all encounters, including the troublesome co-worker just waiting for the opportunity to throw a few backhanded compliments your way. Here are a few samples, taken directly from Dan's YouTube viewers Here's a back-handed compliment I witnessed recently said to a skilled and experienced multi-disciplinary artist: "I just love how you dabble in so many things!" Lol One large man leaned over a small woman at an office party and said, 'what does a little woman like you do with her time?' And this little lady put her finger in her mouth and stared up wide - eyed and said, 'Silly me's a judge.' Hi there, haven't seen you for a while, my, you look good FOR YOUR AGE. (Especially, considering the person giving you the backhanded compliment, is the same bloody age as you and has a face like a leather handbag). Just saying. 😁 Girl friend of my 20 something yr old son said they had been looking at some of my photos taken 20 some yrs ago then said " You used to be so pretty" I just looked at her and thought What? In the next few weeks I realised all conversations with this girl included a backhanded compliment without fail. So, this was said to me minutes before a concert by another singer: “Oh I just love your dress... that length is coming back in fashion again”... A woman said to my mother years ago, referring to my dad, I don't know how someone like you got him. And unfortunately, there are so many many more, as you'll see if you stop by Dan's YouTube channel and watch this same video there. In his video, Dan outlines exactly how to effectively and mindfully put and end to this behavior by spotlighting it and then rising above it. He gives you the outline and the WORDS you need to empower yourself when faced with hurtful comments cloaked as a compliment. Backhanded compliments are nothing more than insults in sheep's clothing, and it helps to be armed when people come at you with a sledgehammer. After watching this video, you'll be armed and ready for holiday parties or any events where two or more are gathered--including around the office water cooler. ___________________________________________ To check out Dan's classes, books, and audio/video training, or to book Dan for an event, go to danoconnortraining.com. You'll be glad you did! Read the full article

Why is This Horse Rearing?

Why is This Horse Rearing?

Q.Will youobservethis video of my mareandlet mebeholdwhetherthis behavior is something you might becompetentto help with? My mare is 5 ½ years oldandhas been striking outenjoythis with her front legs in the school (arena) with me on the ground. Is she trying to harm me or is she frightened?
via Facebook
A. The video showsthehorse behaving aggressively. She’s at liberty, andAsyou approach, her body is positioned directly toward you; she pins her ears, paws, strikes, withrears several times. In contrast, afrightenedhorse will typicallyendeavortoignorebeing caught, andturn, walk, or run away whentheperson approaches.
Editor’s note: For moreaboutrearing, veryplay rearing, see“Spontaneous RearingwithFood Aggression in Horses” by Dr. Sue McDonnell.
That said, aggressivebehavior canHaveits roots in fear. When aafraidhorse is restrained or feels trapped, evasioncanescalate to aggression. At this point, theaggressivebehaviors oftenpersistbecause they are very effective.
unyieldingthreatssimilarthese are inadvertently reinforced when the person pauses, backs away, or gives up,withthe behavior is likely to be repeated in the future.whoverwithcommonsense wouldGetout of the way whenthelarge animal bites, strikes, kicks, rears, or charges. For example, in the video you step back when the horse rears.
Strategies for Reducing Aggression
anfew behavior modification strategies1 that might help resolveaggressivebehavior in horses are described below.
Rule out pain. Askaveterinarianto inspectthe horse. Arthritis, back soreness from poor saddle fit, dental problems, andovergrown hooves are justthefewplaincomplaints thatmaycause physicaldiscomfortwithbehavior problems.
Don’t trigger the aggression. Safety isanpriority, thereforedetainmeasures toshuneliciting the dangerous behavior. Identifying the triggers for aggression andexactlywhat the horse is trying tocircumventare the keys to changing the problem behavior. The horse might be reacting to something in thefleetenvironment, suchOncethe location, other horses, oratransparentperson.
In the video, for example, you approach the horse holdingthecrop. Butprovidedshe’s had abadexperience with whips, you might consider leaving it in the barn. The horse might also anticipatetheunpleasant activity coming up next. Longeing, tacking up, arena work, antrail ride,ashow-jumping event or justofany equestrian activitymaybe distressing or even painful in the right circumstances.whetherthe activity is too demanding, taking apauseor makingsome oneschanges in thestabilizecould help.
Reinforce behaviors you want. When aggression is no longer triggered, there are more opportunities to positively reinforce the calm, quiet, withsafer behavior youre seeking. In addition, the person’s presence should signify that somethingpleasurableisofto happen. For example, the crop in your hand could be replaced with food. Alsofosterthe horse to voluntarily approach you by reinforcing the effort withonetreat oranwither scratch. This could initially be done with you safelybacksidethe fence, providedneeded.
Avoid punishing thetoughbehavior. There are few good options for dealing withcoarsebehaviorAsit occurs.someequine trainersHavingendorsed correcting “disrespectful” behaviorand“making the wrong thing hard,” but punitive methods canMakingaalready dangerous situation even worse. In addition, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior discourages theutilizeof punishment.2
Providetheenriched environment. Look closely at how the horse spends the “other 23 hours” when she isn’t with you.3 Does sheGettingenough exerciseandmental engagement? Horses with opportunities to socialize, freedom to move about, withcustomaryaccess to forage, simplyHavingfewer behavior problems.
Take-Home Message
Horses behave aggressively forDifferentreasons, including fear, frustration,andself-preservation,anditmaybeessentialfrom past experiences. The video clearly shows the problem behavior, butOnceinallcases, more information is needed tofulfilltheparticularunderlying causesandpotential resolutions to the problem for this horse. Whatever the reason, working with horsesmaybe dangerous. Put safety first, withremember to respect the horse’s sizeandstrength.

I just re-listened to this awesome podcast “Effective Reinforcement with Jesus Rosales-Ruiz and Mary Hunter” I can’t recommend it enough! https://animaltrainingfundamentals.com/podcasts/effective-reinforcement-with-jesus-rosales-ruiz-and-mary-hunter/ My special guests this episode are Dr Jesus Rosales-Ruiz and Mary Hunter. As hosts of the Art and Science of Animal Training Conference, they bring together behavior scientists and animal trainers to inspire both communities and elevate the conversation. The theme of the most recent conference was negative reinforcement. In this podcast we revisit this topic and so much more. Our discussion of negative reinforcement meant more exploration of Constructional Aggression Treatment (C.A.T). Jesus and Mary shared some great stories from the lab (even one about training a cockroach!) that are important for trainers to hear. Sometimes what occurs in a laboratory experiment looks very different from what trainers do. A great example was our discussion of counter conditioning. We also discuss the importance of function-based interventions and how positive reinforcement can have better effect once you take care of the negative reinforcement contingency already in place. This also tied into the issue surrounding coercive applications of positive reinforcement and how to remove those barriers. Jesus and Mary share some relatable real-life examples to help illustrate these issues trainers face, for example when animals show fear responses to new objects or household items. This episode is full of science and practical application, and I love that it left me thinking “I have so much more to learn!” #negativereinforcement #counterconditioning #constructionalaggressiontreatment #desensitization #systematicdensitization #behaviorscience #fearresponses #aggressivebehavior https://www.instagram.com/p/Crs6xcKr3W5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Family and friends can be key to helping end domestic violence, study suggests

Krista M. Chronister, University of Oregon The COVID-19 pandemic and strategies to prevent its spread, such as self-quarantine and travel restrictions, have isolated families and intensified conditions that place people at greater risk for domestic violence. Reports of domestic violence are increasing around the world. Domestic violence is harm inflicted by a romantic partner in the form of psychological, physical and sexual abuse, stalking, and economic and spiritual abuse. This violence disproportionately affects women and girls around the world. In the United States, one in four women and one in seven men experience domestic violence during their lifetime. Victims usually turn to informal support resources like family and friends first to share their experiences and get support. Members in victims’ social networks are in a position to help in ways that social service and health care providers may not be. In fact, women seek formal support resources, like social services and police, far less frequently than they reach out to family and friends. Ethnic minority and immigrant women seek formal support resources even less than white women. Family and friends, therefore, can have a powerful impact. Victims who receive support from people they are closest to experience less future violence, injury, suicide, depression, and other negative health outcomes. Engaging and supporting family and friends in the prevention of domestic violence has never been more important. Read the full article

EMOTION VS LOGIC- PREPOSTEROUS!
I have been asked to address the problem of rising aggression in children in these days of homeschooling.
Well that one is rather tricky because whatever may be showing on the surface of things the reality is that we are all conflicted over whether to use emotions or logic to handle a situation!
Emotions are messy while logic is all order and control. We are all a mish mash of both.Traditionally the masculine gender role dictates the subjugation of emotions with logic. Hence the birth of " boys don't cry " and allied BS. And of course girls and their water works have been the content of many a novel and movie.
The truth is -We are all part Emotion & part Logic. There are times when we need the dominance of one over the other. In that sense we are all Spock who is the epitome of logic and Leonard Nimoy the actor who broke down because he had become invisible hence pure emotion.
We need to balance both. At present logic is worshipped with serious zeal. But we are essentially human with feelings. Denying that we have feelings is actually setting a dangerous precedence for the next generation. Thanks to violent games many of them believe that a person only dies (game over)after the third fall!
In a history of wrong calls, denying our emotions or worse not dealing with them is only going to make us angry Eventually as people we would implode.
As the lock down continues many of our children are experiencing bewildering feelings of alienation and isolation. Addressing their fears and questions is necessary. We, their teachers & parents must step up here. As preposterous as that sounds ,we need to teach them to handle their emotions and ours - logically.

I questioned those who are saying a cop has the right to punch anyone in the face. I’m baffled that they place these men and women in such high regard as if they are above being human? As their actions are never questioned but condoned. So if this was a man without a badge would these folks still have that same mentality? This is especially a question to those who are Christians Just asking... plus she was with her 17 month old but hell they’ve shot and killed unarmed men in front of their children. The dramatic experience of that alone will affect those children’s mentality. But we live in a world destined to become a third world country #sadbuttrue #cops #aggressivebehavior

Aggression - Tsunami of Toxicity Ronald J Pawley July 21, 2018 “Under the guise of protecting us from ourselves, the right and the left are becoming ever more aggressive in regulating behavior. “ George McGovern The politics of rage is out of control throughout America and the world. What is particularly unsettling is the frenzy of vitriolic talk from our Congressional representatives who are supposed to unite America, the constitution and constituents they represent. The current caustic atmosphere cannot end well. As our elected officials depart from a civil tongue, there is a recognition that political disagreement can quickly become personal and debate can succumb to barbarous language and bad behavior. Maxine Waters is pouring fuel on the fire of ruthless behavior. Many folks are justifying bad behavior by disparaging the actions of the President and those who work in his administration. There is enough blame to go around. President Trump has contributed to the vitriolic atmosphere, speaking of his opponents in the crudest language. There is an awful lot of anger and even hatred out there today which began to fester during the Obama administration. Media members and politicians on both sides of the political aisle have united in a call for civility on the heels of a series of ugly incidents. The result has been everything from cable news stars defending rivals to Bill Clinton complimenting a member of the Trump administration. In an era of social media, as it began to surface and went viral as restraint melted away since President Trump's policy of family separations at the border, which he has since reversed. This policy has been in existence since the Clinton administration. The media would stoke the fires which came to dominate the news coverage. Members of the president’s staff and Cabinet are being run out of restaurants and harassed at their homes. Maxine Waters of California is encouraging flash mobs to gather to torment members of the administration whenever they are seen in public. We need to draw back from this corrosive place in America’s political arena. In order to understand aggression in others, it is useful to consider our own feelings of aggression as this varies from person to person. Reaching an awareness of our personal experiences will help us monitor and control our reaction to aggression in others, according to Ronald J. Pawley People are both physically and emotionally affected by aggression. Emotions can alter our physical state, for example when feeling angry your muscles tighten, the heart beats faster and shaking can occur. People on both sides of the aisle are frustrated in achieving their aims, the most likely response is aggression. Such individuals are motivated to be aggressive towards whoever or whatever is standing in their way. Frustration often leads to feelings of aggression and violence.

I am so THRILLED to announce another fantastic resource to improve welfare for avian patients! Dr Alicia McLaughlin and I have collaborated to bring you another Fear Free® course. In this program we go over the Fierce/Fearful to Friendly (F2F) procedure that can be used when a bird wants distance as a reinforcer. This can include situations in which the bird is showing a fear response to people, objects (such as medical instruments), places, etc. It makes my heart very happy to see this information reaching more practitioners and in turn helping more animals. The course looks and sounds fantastic and includes fun interactive graphics. I hope you will take advantage of this awesome resource to help improve avian welfare https://fearfreepets.com/courses/addressing-fear-aggression-in-avian-patients-a-constructional-approach/ #fearfree #fearfreeavian #fearfreecertifican #distanceasarreinforcer #fiercetofriendly #aggressivebehavior #fearresponses #avianmedicine #avianbehavior #parrotbehavior #constructionalapproach #aviandiplomate #veterinarymedicine #veterinarybehavior https://www.instagram.com/p/CcV63b1l86C/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
