🎄💾🗓️ Day 15: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - BBC Micro🎄💾🗓️⌨️🇬🇧
The BBC Micro was an 8-bit microcomputer introduced in 1981 by Acorn Computers under the BBC Computer Literacy Project of the UK, launched with a 6502A processor running at 2 MHz, supported 16 KB to 32 KB of RAM, and featuring a BASIC environment. The machine was versatile, having very good-for-its-time graphics and multi-colors. Expansion capability for educational and experimental use with an assortment of I/O ports, which included a 1 MHz bus, user port, and cassette interface.
The BBC Micro was known for its reliability and emphasis on teaching programming and computer science. The system software, Acorn MOS, was simple and intuitive. With peripherals such as floppy drives and second processors, it performed tasks well beyond its initial use and extended its lifetime by at least a decade or more.
The BBC Micro also pushed forward a lot of gaming and software since this open architecture inspired a thriving community of developers. It also played a big role in the development of the ARM architecture by Acorn Computers, which would change the way modern computers are made in years to come. The BBC Micro has a special place in computing history, which expanded education and brought computing to schools and society through the 1980s.

Idea for a new aesthetic:
Sepiapunk
Influences: Dieselpunk, Steelpunk, Urbancore, Dark Academia, and Cassette Punk, and especially 1970s architecture (particularly Brutalism), art, transportation, political history, and pop culture
Main Colors and Patterns: Black, cream, white, dark brown, sepia, maroon, plum, olive green, mustard, orange, dark teal, muted colors in stripes and lines, paisley
Main Fashions: Double-breasted three-piece suits with shirts and ties in those colors, turtlenecks, tweed blazers and bow ties, drab pencil skirts and trousers, clunky glasses
Main Typefaces: original Helvetica, Eurostile, News Gothic
Description: An aesthetic acting as the bridge between Modernism and Postmodernism. Characterized by deep-seated skepticism of corrupt government and corporations, glorification of investigative journalism or other actions that involve massive amounts of paperwork in the course of uncovering conspiracies, and particularly an ambivalent view of gritty, grimy city life and modernity (especially middle-class office life) with an undercurrent of paranoia. However, the most important emphasis is on its close relationship with hauntology. Whereas hauntology revolves around a retrofuturistic ideal, one that emphasizes exploring lost possibilities and imagining what could be, based on what could have been, i.e. on the predictions and almost-achieved ideals of the past, sepiapunk simply dwells on the beginning of the end, of the postwar welfare state era.
Key Technologies: Teletext, Later Electric Typewriters, Mimeographs, Early Microcomputers, Early Photocopiers, Early Subcompact Cars, Concorde and the 747, Shinkansen, Metroliner, TGV and the Advanced Passenger Train
Films for Good Reference: Playtime (1967), Saul Bass’ film pitching the new Bell System logo (1969), The French Connection (1970), Shaft (1971), Klute (1971), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Trafic (1971), Get Carter (1971), The Candidate (1972), The Man (1972), Soylent Green (1973), Super Fly (1972), Death Wish (1974), The Parallax View (1974), Dolemite (1975), Three Days of the Condor (1975), Taxi Driver (1976), Marathon Man (1976), All the President’s Men (1976), Network (1976), The China Syndrome (1979), The Post (2017)
Music genres closely associated with sepiapunk: Hauntology (especially if it involves samples of experimental and electronic music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, e.g. the works of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop), acid jazz, 2 Tone ska, soul, post-punk

'Why I Made A Game' or 'How I Learned To Stop Sleeping And Love The Coroutine'
Preamble Ramble.
My love for computers and computer games started when my dad bought a BBC Micro B. Whilst the machine is ancient by today’s standards, at the time it opened a whole new world for me. Games such as Repton, Chucky Egg, Citadel and a weird kangaroo game that I can't remember the name of (if anyone does know, I would be eternally grateful) took up most of my time, but what really intrigued me, was a copy of the BBC Microcomputer System User Guide that came with the computer.
In the said user guide, were large sections explaining how to use the basic language, what could be achieved and how to save your programs to tape. A quick skim read later and I started to write my own text adventure games...short, badly written text adventure games, but MY short badly written text adventure games nonetheless.
Fast forward thirty-something years and a slew of computers and consoles later and I was still no closer to writing a full game. Now in my adult years, being a professional Composer, I work with others that have seen game projects through from concept to release. Although I love doing what I do, I was always a little jealous that I hadn't managed to do the same.
Coronavirus Has Entered The Chat.
My year so far has sucked, as I'm sure it has for most people. I lost my dad at the beginning of the year and shortly before that, my grandad. My family and I were stuck in a mould infested flat with no sign of ever escaping. I was depressed and felt quite hopeless. There was no light at the end of the tunnel.
One indistinguishable bleak day, I was going through some files on my desktop and stumbled upon an old unity project that I’d started, called ‘Don`t Die Dickhead’. The project was a basic rage platformer that I’d made as a kind of joke, to piss off any friends and family that were willing to play it. It had three levels, controls that sort-of worked and was completely unfair. My ADHD brain latched onto the idea and before I knew it, I was working on it again; my goal, make ten levels and put it on Steam. I didn't really believe that I'd do it, but I was utterly committed to at least trying to finish it this time. Even though, at that point, I didn't really know where the game was going.
Game Design By Osmosis.
My game design process went something like this ‘make the game tough but fun and if any ideas that you like come to you, implement them...if you can’, That was quite honestly the extent of it. I'd spend time coming up with level design ideas and then add extra problems or aesthetic choices as they came to me.
The game's core revolves around chaos, so that's how it should be created, I thought. That being said...Having a solid idea before you start is a fantastic idea and something I'll definitely do from now on. The more I added to the game, the more I realised that I had to make some sort of a plan.
I added a bunch of parody levels based on games that I like, but then had to figure out how I'd work them into the project. I settled on the idea of every level or collection of levels being different tv shows or stations. As the player progressed, the channels changed and the overall aesthetic changed with it. It was at this point that I actually had to sit down and design it a little more seriously.
When In Doubt Move To Malta.
During this time, my wife and I, disillusioned with the UK government, decided that we no longer wanted to live in the UK. We’ve always had a soft spot for Malta, so we decided to go for it, try living there for a couple of months and if it all works out, begin the process of becoming residents.
Luckily composing had been good to me during lockdown and my wife's blog had started to take off, so we found ourselves in a very unique position. Off we went. Taking the bare minimum with me, an external harddrive, a nanokeys keyboard, My Ollo Audio headphones and a laptop, my intention was to continue working (Scoring a fantastic film at the moment) and finish the game.
After acclimating myself to the new environment, lizards in the house, mosquitos, hornets the size of your fist and 38 degree weather in September, I got back to work. Please believe me when i say ENVIRONMENT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE! Psychologically, the change in environment for me was incredible. I felt far more creatively available and finishing ‘DDD’, for the first time, didn't seem impossible.
And So Here We Are.
Since arriving in Malta, I’ve worked my sexy ass off. When not composing I was coding, when not coding I was creating artwork, when not creating artwork, I was playing the same goddamn level for what seemed like the thousandth time. I changed the name to ‘Don't Die! Douche!’, I made a trailer, I paid for a Steam page (well if we’re honest, my wife did!!), I hassled people to bug test it. Before too long, it was finished. I’d done it!
I'm still in shock to be honest and i'm pretty sure it'll take quite some time to sink in. Its a dumb game, its annoyingly tough in places, more than a little bit surreal. But, it’s my dumb game and I love it.
Final Thoughts.
I guess this whole piece is just my stab at being motivational. Please believe me when I say that If I can do it, so can you! Start small, work consistently, but most importantly make something that you want to make. Ignore trends, do your own thing. I'm not saying that you need to do something revolutionary, just something that has your personality built into it. Having a personal connection to your project makes a big difference. I hope this has been, at the very least entertaining and potentially motivating. Either way, thanks for reading.
If you want to check out ‘Don't Die! Douche!’ I’ll pop the steam page link below.
Take care and try to be nice to one another.
Big Love
Matt

Transgender Awareness Week: spreading gender awareness in the Arduino community

Transgender Awareness Week, which culminates today with the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), aims at raising the visibility of the transgender and gender non-conforming people, and address the issues their community faces.
At Arduino, we believe that technology should improve the lives of everybody, regardless of their gender, sexuality, race, age, ability, nationality, and body. Being inclusive is at the core of our mission: making technology easy to use, we want to empower everybody to be free to innovate.
We have decided to join the Transgender Awareness Week and the TDOR because we feel a duty to our community, and to all its members, including the GNC and trans community. Our goal today is not only to celebrate all the diversities of our community — in particular the trans and GCN community — but also to start a conversation with our users about inclusivity in general. Finally, our celebration wants to empower our community members to spread awareness by being everyday their authentic self.
At Arduino, we believe role models are important to inspire people, to show the way, to reveal what’s possible so we’re going to talk more and more about the people who helped build the technologies who make what we do possible.
Today, we celebrate two transwomen that, even indirectly, have contributed to the Arduino Project. Sophie Wilson and Lynn Conway not only represent a fundamental inspiration for us, but are also a beacon of hope for the next generation of trans and GNC scientists in our community.

Sophie Wilson studied computer science at the University of Cambridge; in 1978, she designed the Acorn Micro-Computer, System 1, an early 8-bit microcomputer for hobbyists and, later, co-designed with Steve Furber the prototype of what became the BBC Microcomputer. In 1983, Wilson started to design the instructions set for the “Acorn RISC Machine” processor that became popular as Arm. The Arm became one of the most successful microprocessor architecture in history and is now used in billions of different products, from mobile phones to laptops, from digital TV to video games and our beloved Arduino boards. (All of our latest boards are based on Arm.) Wilson was listed in 2011 in Maximum PC as number 8 in an article titled “The 15 Most Important Women in Tech History.”

Lynn Conway studied at the M.I.T. and Columbia University and was then recruited by IBM Research to co-design the architecture of the Advanced Computing Systems (ACS) project. With the invention of the multiple out-of-order dynamic instruction scheduling, used by most computers to improve their performance, she made foundational contributions to computer architecture. In 1969 she underwent gender transition and was fired. This didn’t stop here and the work she did with Carver Mead led to the so-called “Mead & Conway revolution.” Their book “Introduction to VLSI Systems” was the first VLSI chip design textbook usable by non-physicists and resulted in a worldwide restructuring of academic materials in computer science and electrical engineering education, and was paramount for the development of industries based on the application of microelectronics. She was also recognized by Time Magazine in 2014 as one of the most influential LGBTQ figures in American Culture. Lynn is a gender activist and has always worked to protect and expand the rights of transgender people.
As Arduino users, we have to thank Lynn for “democratizing” the design of complex silicon chips, which paved the way for people like Sophie who we must thank for designing the Arm processor architecture that is central to all of the work we do now. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today in technology!
So, Lynn and Sophie, thank you from the bottom of our open source hearts here at Arduino.
The celebration of the Transgender Awareness Week and the TDOR is only the beginning of an important journey that will mark Arduino’s commitment to inclusivity. Stay tuned for more!

Just Pinned to Brainfood: RISC OS web server If you have read this blog before (and I am pretty sure at least one person has) you will know that I am a big fan of RISC OS on Raspberry Pi. RISC OS is an operating system that has the 'look' of Linux and the 'feel' of the BBC microcomputer. I have delved into various aspects of RISC OS Pi before. Whilst looking for web server solutions for RISC OS I recently discovered WebJames. WebJames is a server with an integrated PHP interpreter. It is available in the PackMan package manager and it is really easy to use. In this post I will show you how to set it up (really easy) and get going as a hoe server. Once you have finished installing from PacMan all you need to do is provide a folder called 'Site' and you are good to go. Packman installs WebJames into :0.$.Apps.Web however you can easily move it to any location you like. As most of my files are stored on a removable USB stick I've put WebJames there. This has got to be the simplest web server ever. No complex configuration; no mucking about with Linux; simply launch the server and point it at some HTML files. As long as WebJames is running on the pi it will dutifully listen on port 80 for any requests. PackMan (not Pac-man) There is also an example code package which is worth exploring. I've only just scratched the surface of what we can do with WebJames but I am certainly glad it exists. The first thing you might want to do is create a test site. Here I have provided a new HTMLfile called index and placed it in the 'site' folder. The test page has a single link that opens a folder called 'files' (useful for grabbing files from the pi onto another machine). The index test page is shown in StrongEd for RISCOS (although I actually wrote this in qedit for DOS under DOSBox for that extra geekiness). My first test page running on my Samsung Galaxy Note. Not very exciting just a link to a folder. Directory listing of files on the server. To view your web server test page on your home network simply point your browser at http://your IP address for example mine is http://192.168.1.218 To view your page on your Raspberry Pi instead try http://127.0.0.1 Well that's all for today. We have only dipped our feet into the RISC OS server waters. I hope somebody found this a useful guide. I am certainly looking forward to doing more with this software. In fact the Apache web server I have running on my second Pi is the only reason I actually have a second pi running at all. WebJames really makes RISC OS more and more attractive as an operating system. Oh and did I mention that you can use BBC BASIC as a server-side scripting language? If you enjoyed this post then there is a slim chance you will enjoy this post about my experience of RISC OS on Raspberry Pi or that time I installed DOSBox on Raspberry Pi or even something completelydifferent. BBC Documentary - Hyper Evolution : Rise Of The Robots (Part 1)
Notes:
Labs around the world are creating robots to create opportunity in the future
We already share the world with 9 million robots and its going to double
Where it took generations of evolution to get where humans are right now. it took extremely less time for robots to evolve known as hyper evolution.
Robots are being made to reflect human image
In Japan, there’s an autonomous robot called Erica made by a profession, Hiroshi Ishiguro, based on his concept of beauty combined with images of 30 women by computer graphics
With every conversion, its interaction more sophisticated and more human as it gets more data
Though its unable to express an emotion, slowly it creates its own personality
It was created by Ishiguro because he thought it was essential for human enhancement
Many Japanese people believe that man-made objects can have the spirit of humans which is known as animism. Which is deeply rooted in their religion
In the west, people are afraid of robots thinking they will take over humanity
Eric, the first British robot, made in 1928. Which a replica is displayed in a London Museum.
Robots are made to replicate humans due to humans obsession to replicate themselves.
The fear of robots were rooted by a novel in the 1920s. which embeds in our culture.
People are most worried about the potential of robots taking over human jobs
The movement of robots is what powers the robot. The first movable robot is salesman robot.
In 1937, Westinghouse Electric created a robot called electro in ordered demonstrate their robotic abilities
In Mansfield Memorial Museum electro is still on show
Though it was unsure how electro was display during tours.
Electro moving sequence was operated by voice commend using single syllable words
Though he was able to perform simple tricks, which enabled human imagination
In Wes humanoid University at Tokyo, they created a wabbot two, a keyboard player, in 1984. Which has its fingers has its own degree of freedom that total fifty degree of freedoms.
The microcomputers mimics the nervous system of the fingers. The robot apparently moves faster than a personal pianist
This is surprising because the human hand is complex
Robots follow their own evolutionary path which developed their hand unique to them.
In minis car plant on the outskirts of Oxford which has a land of robots more than 900 of them filled the bodies of 1000 of cars without a human in sight
Robot arms replaced humans in factories as the robot hands work in perfect harmony
Robots are used due to predictability but they are not perfect.
Worldwide factories are filled in 3 million robots
For humans walking is effortless, but for robots its the hardest first step
WHL 2 built 1985 is the first autonomous walking robot. Dr. Fuji built a robot that replicated our biological Anatomy with mechanical anatomy.
its legs is under a meters tall which the same as humans. to move are legs move with muscles. robots use actuators
to walk independently Dr. Fuji worked helped engineer a small lightweight hydraulic motor that can be mounted in WHL 2 waist
Which can walk 60 kilometers though in a slow speed
Though we had the same problem. A robot solved this evolution hurdle
Built just 20 years later a robot with a pelvis. which made it walk faster and smooth by Konishi.
Because of the pelvis robot part. the knees are able to fully extend.
It was millions of years for humans to walk on two legs. the robots mastered bipedal motion in decades.
on the outskirts on Boston. There is an robot maker trying to liberating machines from the constraints of human form. Robot walking diverge from our evolutionary path.
The robot Atlas was built to walk in the toughest terrian by Boston Dynamics. They made high-tech robots that can walk in the snow and mud which are robust.
Atlas walk in the human world as it was dynamically its balance is guided by dozen of sensors. Which is always sensing where its falling.
To be able to walk, the engineers focused on the strength to weight ratio
Robots had their evolutionary path to get their own hands and to be able to walk tough terrains
