Toni Hamel

Born (1961) in Italy. Lives and works in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Toni Hamel describes her work as “an illustrated commentary on human frailties“. Rooted in story-telling, her art practice draws from personal experiences and outward observations to create thematic bodies of work that reflect on and interpret the psychological unease of this anthropocentric age. Virtues and vices, the holy and the profane, the good and the bad all share equal weight in her work and supply an infinite source of material for her investigations. Pointing to historical references, popular culture and our current conceptual standing, Hamel’s satirical narratives ultimately seem to question our behaviour while alerting us about the repercussions of our current thinking models.

Hamel is the recipient of three Ontario Arts Council grants (2011, 2012, 2014). Her work has been exhibited in public and commercial galleries in Canada and abroad, and is included in the art collections of J. J. Abrams, Whoopi Goldberg, the Government of Ontario, the Omer DeSerres Corporation, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and many other private collections around the world.

Looking to make some Penpal friends

Been searching around trying to find any pen pals from Instagram mostly, dont really trust the FB groups that are made for pen pals.

I did meet a pen pal on IG but she had stopped really with the letter writing or damn USPS got lame and may have lost her letter that she said she was gonna send months back so not sure if I am just personally bad at making any friends in the real World.

I haven't done one in ages since i was prolly in my elementary days but i guess being in the late 30's can be boring. But would love to meet new people either online or on paper which I rarely have done.

I am 35, American (Korean) born and raised in the hell hole Chicago has become now with all the crazies going on. Likes: pretty much all sort of tv dramas from the American to Kdrama and C dramas and some animes (will take on recs for any other Asian style dramas if there good plots) If you want to know more I can post a list. Music: Kpop (mostly the boy bands like BTS, ATEEZ, SF9, Astro,Seventeen) some Black Pink- had some favs as teen but been so long since I listened to girl bands and cant remember much, have gotten back into Kpop for about the time Covid started but slowly building into liking more bands) Also love listening to certain Kdrama OST's which lead me to fall in love with korean music more as the shows aired. But i have a spotify playlist i build for a bunch of KDrama songs. Also Chinese music has also gotten some of my likes from Ren Jialun (Allen Ren) has some great songs and acting, Zhang Zhehan who was a good actor now mostly into singing is pretty good too. I like also being creative with digital art like fan art of tv dramas like making gifs or plane fan art posters and such, used to do a lot on LiveJournal if you know that site. Been mostly making short vid clips for Twitter here and there haven't really done gifs in a while but I sometimes do for the fun of it. I also graduated from Uni with a BFA in concentration in Graphic Design since all I love is being on the computer so have that as a hobby. Fav foods: korean bbq love spicy pork and pork wit lettuce also the short ribs marinated. American wise Pizza, pasta, Chinese cuisine a bit of mix of everything. Fav books: scifi fantasy, romance, mangas ( Sailor Moon, Haikyuu, Shadowhunters series, Harry Potter series, Twilight saga, Fifty Shades series, Gabriels Inferno series)

General rambles (both about reptiles & life & art)

Hey guys! I apologize for not being super active / responsive lately, I’ve been really busy getting prepped for brumating snakes / next season, moving lots of cages and animals around, and OH yeah this show this weekend lol

Yeah! I’ll be there with western hognoses, leopard geckos, art, and a couple gently used AP cages. That’s pretty much it for the reptiles portion of today’s ramblings with sunfish so I’m gonna put the rest below a cut

In life news I’ve really been doing some serious thinking about what I want and how to achieve those goals. I was bouncing around the idea of going back to school (FOR ART!) Which is something I’ve never attempted at a higher-education level. Long story short I don’t think full time university would be a good option for me for both financial and time commitment reasons. I would have to do TWO full years of general art classes before I could even apply for a BFA program and that’s really just not realistic for me. Instead I’m going to be taking some enrichment classes at one of the local community colleges, some online courses, and developing my own curriculum to really COMMIT to being a full-time artist. I’d be able to keep a part time job during this in addition to my reptile stuff so finances wouldn’t be too bad and I could continue my house down-payment savings.

Some things to look forward from me if you’re into my artwork!

-> Starting a youtube channel to document my growth and experiences as someone not pursuing an art degree / trying to make self-driven schooling work, and share just generalized art content

->Creating an instagram account just for art (reels! posts! curated content!)

->Really working hard to bring new products to my Etsy, redbubble, etc

->Expanding into other online art marketplaces

-> MAYBE look into streaming? I’ve tried and I don’t think my existing internet / computer setup has enough POWER to handle really dedicated streaming but it may be something to look into investing in if there’s enough interest.

-> EVENTUALLY a patreon with a sticker of the month club, maybe enamel pin club, that kind of thing. I have PLANS!

I’m not going to like... spam my channel / instagram or anything on this tumblr. I’ll probably make an announcement when they’re up and running but after that just try to create something from scratch!

as an artist, are there any super simple art tips that you know that improve a persons art a lot when they start using it? like, my teacher once told me to always have the corner of the mouth in line with the corner of the eye when drawing faces, and that's stuck with me for years, but i really want to know if theres any other nifty little tricks like that. Let me just preface this by saying I squealed with JOY when I realized I'd been sent an ask not about my writing, but about my VISUAL ART. My BFA was in painting and what I teach at university is connected to the creation of visual art. So I just get SO happy to think someone else cares about my stuff enough to ask how I make it! Please don't ever be sorry or shy to reach out! <3

Aside doing an actual video (which I could try, one of these days, if you want, but I'm trad only so it'll be clunky lol), here are some thoughts that pop into my sleep-deprived brain:

--It's FINE to use a reference. In order to master line variation and, especially form and movement, you will want NOT to let tracing be a crutch. But unless you have plans to be a sequential artist who has to have a mental "shorthand" of how-to's with various features and body parts, it is ENTIRELY ok to use a live or photographed model. Whoever started the rumor that this is cheating was being dumb.

--Become fluent in various softnesses (and therefore values) of graphite, Conte crayon, and charcoal. Yes, even if you're a computer artist. Learn the relationship between line thickness, perspective, and depth of form. I can go into this more if need be. Your H pencil is going to be hard and pale, and your B pencil is going to be soft and dark. Both have their uses.

--True to a bigger point: Just like in Doctor Who you don't skip Nine, don't skip trad art design fundamentals. You don't have to stay there forever, but let it be your foundational training. You don't have to go to university for this if you're unable. There are free online courses called MOOCs.

--Don't start stylized. Copying things like anime or comic book styles is a valid way to warm up, but you are filtering your work through someone else's eyes. Try to start with the original subject (be it a still like or a portrait) and develop your own unique mannerisms from that point.

--Don't be afraid to stop and toss it, and start over.

--Hardest one: Don't be afraid to erase and redo the part you love best if it doesn't have a correct relationship to the other parts in the drawing, painting, etc. I guarantee you can make something as good as that passage again. It's not gone forever. Don't be afraid to rework.

--Walk away for at least 3 hours and come back. Is it all still resolved or do you need to work on something?

--When choosing a color palette, it can be helpful to already have a neutral midtone established. Also, don't be me and get too ambitious about your colors. Pick like three tops and just do variations of those.

--Do NOT draw a human subject and think of the parts by their names WHILE rendering them. Reduce them to design principles: not "this is the eye," but "this is the dark round shape surrounded by a lighter space." If you think "this is the eye," you will stop really closely looking at what makes this eye unique and just kind of "plug in" stock eye features. This is the biggest enemy of capturing a likeness.

--You can absolutely rework anything in any medium. There are just different methods for doing so, between say watercolors and oils.

--Work with white noise or music. A playlist that keeps you in the zone, undistracted but also calm, is the playlist that you want.

--Know when to quit. 'I rarely feel like my work is "done" but if I keep going, I over work and ruin it.

THE SCULPTOR: I did, so fine, my dear Archivist, my story.

THE ARCHIVIST: Hold on, let me do my thing.

Statement of The Sculptor regarding how they became. Statement taken directly from subject the second day of the fifth month, 3415. Statement begins:

THE SCUPLTOR: I don’t remember my parents. Not their faces, their names or what they sounded like, but I did know that I loved them very much. I wanted to do well in school, to make them proud of me. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in middle school. I was lucky my parents were so willing to take steps necessary to help me. I went to the college nearby to study computer programming. Hated every minute of it. Stuck with it, though, finished, got my degree and immediately went to an Art College near me. Once I got my BFA, Bachelors in the Fine Arts, I managed to land a sculpting gig at a statue garden.

The guy who ran it was simply called Clay. I always thought that was funny. His name was Clay and he worked with clay.

I worked there for almost two years. I would later learn that that was the same amount of time people had been going missing in the nearby towns. I never really thought too hard about how…lifelike Clay made those statues. I just thought he was really good.

One day, he said we were going on a road trip, for inspiration. We loaded into a van with our tools. I asked about the clay. He said there was some at the place we were going.

We drove for almost three hours. Then he pulled into a clean-looking and well-managed house with pristine green lawns and a tall white fence.

We were buzzed in without fanfare. Clay turned the van into the driveway, parked and got out. I followed, confused and uncertain. I grabbed my tools and followed him inside.

He opened the door without being allowed in.

The first thing I noticed was the man sat in the armchair. He was old and frail, and he stared off into the garden without a word.

Clay walked over to him and crouched down, whispering something into his ear.

The old man rose up and walked to the center of the room, standing so still in made my hair stand on end. Clay gestured me forward and I walked.

He showed me how to…push away the folds of skin, how to push it back, smooth it. It was so easy and so…fun. I helped him shape and change that old man until a man that couldn’t be older than 20 stood in his place.

He smiled big and wide, and a chill went down my spine. He thanked Clay for his help and turned to me.

“A fine apprentice you have, he praised,”

As we left, he asked me if I liked it. I said yes and that I wanted more. He smiled in the same uncanny way that that old man had.

He taught me more and more. It was fun at first, shaping flesh like clay, molding them to look how I wanted, but it grew dull. I hated just working with human flesh. I wanted more.

I asked Clay.

He asked me what I wanted to do.

I asked him if I could make the next one as un-human like as I could.

He told me he would have to get an unwilling one. The willing always wanted to look a certain way.

He asked if I had a gender preference. I said male. Male creatures of the animal kingdom are far more colorful than their female counterparts.

The man he brought was young, maybe 19-20 years old. He showed him to me in the back of a car. The boy’s wrists were duct taped behind him and there was a cloth gag in his mouth. He looked scared and for some reason, that made me smile. When his fear seemed to deepen, I knew that I now bore the same smiles of my mentor.

We brought him to the study and stood him in the middle of the room. Clay sat to watch as I worked.

I removed the tape and the gag and looked him over. The clothes had to go, but I let him keep his underwear. I never liked the look of dicks. They looked like diseased worms.

He was so scared as I began to work. I first broke all the bones of his feet. I wanted to see what a human would look like with digitigrade. It took some work and using the foot of a dog to finally get it right. Had to start over a few times. Once I got the hang of it, the other foot was easy.

Once that was done, I added fur. All the way to the knee. If he could have screamed, I knew he would have. I did his fingers next. I bent the bone, tore out his nails and replaced them. I think he was crying at that point, but I was too focused on my work.

I wanted to turn him into a sort of werewolf. Just to see if I could. I did, too. Wasn’t as great as some of my newer works, but it was good for my first attempt.

Clay was so fucking proud of me.

It was too.

Then Clay had to leave, his mentor called him away to some unknown island that has never and will never exist.

The ritual failed, my mentor killed himself for the failure, but I was still hear.

My god screamed a lamented its failure. I whispered a promise to bring it more madness, so it would heal.

I kidnapped over a hundred people in my lifetime. I turned them into monstrosities beyond human comprehension and I kept them alive and conscious in Clay-no my garden. I drove them insane until the only being they served was mine. I used them to keep people out of my garden.

And then…I was killed by a hunter. Not the best way to go, I’m afraid. I melted into clay. I was nothing. Then my little Glyptikí came to me. She brought me back, and with me, some of my humanity. The Spiral let me keep some memories, the Traveler shieled me somewhat from The Spiral. I like it that way. Glyptikí and I traveled for a while before we met you and Hunter. Everything else we’ve done together, so there isn’t much to add.

213341 Art Studio IIIA ⋆ Interim - Study break-ing my heart

Out of campus for the break and with my emails to Mike unanswered, I cut my losses, went on Rubber Monkey and ordered the UCA202 myself.

A few days later it arrived - the final piece to my procrastination-fueled sampling puzzle.

It was exciting! For the first time in two months, I was actually going to turn the damn thing on and USE it.

Everything was hooked in, the sampler was now fully connected to the computer, and I was ready to rock and roll.

…I had enough time to tap the buttons a couple times before I heard a loud pop, turned my head to the outlet, and saw smoke coming out of the plug.

The following is a recreation of the event:

After yelling a number of expletives, I hurriedly unplugged everything and sat with the very real possibility that I might had just burned through $500 in 10 seconds.

A text exchange with my dear friend and recent BFA graduate Zero roughly pinpointed the cause to be with the incorrect voltage of the adaptor I was using, and the SP-202 manual more-or-less confirmed this.

Wanting to make the most out of an increasingly-shitty night, I put some of the CDs to work in Audacity and did a little plunderphornicating for a couple hours.

It was my first composition in over 3 weeks - so here's to not having a creativity gap that wide ever again.

...it could've gone better: I spent an hour alone just trying to get the individual components to sync-up pitch-wise; and not to much success.

Audacity is a finnicky, obselete, idiosyncratic and utterly annoying piece of tech to use, but when it gets me down, I remember: Any recording artist even 25 years ago would KILL for software such as this, let alone it being free.

Aside from the musicmaking session, a brief smell test put the plug, adaptor and extension multi-plug into the bin, but not before an outing the next morning to Music Planet for some diagnostics.

The young man at the desk there was a good help, further clarifying the issue to be with the plug (that was shipped from Japan with the sampler) having a different...voltage... transform.... thing than the New Zealand... forgive me, this is like learning a new language.

I would need to buy a new adaptor plug, specific to the details he wrote on the back of a business card. If I were lucky, the current (fried) plug would've absorbed the damage, but otherwise, the Rockshop would provide repairs.

It was then on to Jaycar, as I brought myself a new extension multi-plug and adapter plug, and watched $50 disappear in front of my very eyes.

The chap there was also quite handy, whipping up some wiring diagrams of the Boss Sampler to show that, if there had been any damage, it would only be in the region near where the plug goes in and I forgot the rest.

I could, if I had wanted to, plug the new adaptor into the sampler and try working things again - at my own risk. I was a bit fearful in reference to the following graph:

...and so I hauled my gear to Rockshop, to see what I could do about it. After wincing at the nearly-burning-the-house-down-backstory, they plugged in the sampler with the new gear.

They were jumpy about it, and I couldn't even tell if they were joking - a decent chance they were just as unsure as I was! But low and behold... IT WORKED!

I tapdanced my way back home.

I mean, I still had to actually learn to use the damn thing.

During the meantime, I was back in the lab, creating small 'beats' from the CDs at my disposal.
