Got to help out with some birdbanding today!!
Caught last, this feisty lil Carolina Wren, Thryothorus ludovicianus.
Notorious squirmers known for escaping the bag when you try to take them out for measuring but we got our data from this one and a lil paparazzi moment!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Caught two Carolina Chickadees, Poecile carolinensis.
We believe they were a mating pair, didn't get photos of the second which was a lady but she was building an egg which we could see through her brood patch!! It was wild! We let her go pretty quickly after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And also our lil Chipping Sparrow, Spizella passerina.
Our permit allows us to play calls under very specific conditions and when I played one from my phone before setting it up on the blue tooth speaker this lil dude dive bombed my head! He was stays ready apparently!

Introducing my esk! Firstly, lets say what esk are. They are a closed species created by witherlings on Deviantart. I say closed species but its very easy to get them! I mean, look at my little hoard, that’s just from one year! Esk are plant ghosts that got transformed into these cool creatures from something that got lost. Most of these guys were animals and a human. The last one, little Zip, was created from a birdband. Lets start from the top! First is Fenn, my first ever esk. Then we have Mischief, Fenn’s first transformation. They share a parental bond with the little one, as she needs to have some parental supervision. Then we have vermilion, the only human in this bunch. She got lost because her friend was very mean to her. We don’t like that friend. Next are Elwyn, Tul and Scorch. Elwyn was a mother wold, Tul an ancient sea scorpion. Scorch? Well, he is still very much in the plotting zone. So far he is just chilling with his fam. Last is the special boy Zip! He was gifted to me by a wonderful person in the esk group and Zip is also created by Fenn. Part of the little chaos family. All this art was made by me except Zip, he was designed by dinstraction and Alphabaetafish on deviantart. The art was made by Alphabaetafish . It was Dinstraction who gifted Zip back to me and I’ll be forever grateful!

Every spring @mass.wildlife visits our campus to check and band the eaglets in the nest located on our campus.  This year the two large and healthy eaglets we found in the nest.  These are the fourth and fifth known young eagles produced in this rather young nest.  (One year of banding did not occur due to COVID.)
As usual, the Mass Wildlife personnel put on an outstanding educational display for the NRM juniors and seniors.  The history of bald eagle conservation in Massachusetts, the eagle banding system, and the importance of morphometric data collected were explained as the crew set to work.
.
We are very thankful to the staff of the Mass Wildlife Southeastern Region.  They go above and beyond.

It’s #WorldMouseDay…this one has a pretty cool job, to help catch raptors (birds of prey) for scientific research! Don’t worry, the mouse does NOT get harmed, & neither does the bird! NB: All trap setting, wildlife capture, handling, ringing/tagging, & release done under proper permits & only by those with appropriate training/experience. #mouse #rodent #balchatri #birdsofprey #raptors #birdringing #birdbanding #research #fancymouse #mammals (at Krakeelrivier, Eastern Cape, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHiicDTgPbz/?igshid=1y1pwrteecbu1

Hey! Sorry I haven’t been posting this week. I’m at my grandma’s house in Eastern Oregon. Tomorrow, I’ll be doing something I’ve dreamed about since second grade: going bird banding! Bird banding is the process of catching wild birds and attaching metal bands to their legs, so that the migration patterns of birds can be tracked and their populations can be monitored. It’s absolutely crucial to bird conservation. I’ve been invited to tag along with the professor of Ornithology at Eastern Oregon University at her banding station tomorrow. I’m so excited! I don’t know how much photography I’ll get to do, but definitely watch my story tomorrow. I’ll be getting up at 3:30 AM. 😱😱😱 Wish me some good birds (and the strength to get up at such an ungodly hour 😁). . Until I get back to painting here’s some serious hawk sketches and one not so serious. . . . . #bird #birding #birb #birdbanding #art #birdsofprey #artwork #artist #artistsoninstagram #pencildrawing #drawing #sketch #sketchbook #myart (at La Grande, Oregon)

To focus my final project more, I divided it into three regions, Northeast, Southeast, Southern Florida. The first three images are from the Northeast. I also decided to choose animals that are moving around in the fall for one reason or another. This Sharp Shinned Hawk was one captured on a mountain for banding purposes. It was spectacular to see a bird like this so close up! The habitat shot is what the hawk watch overlooks. Truly amazing watching migrating raptors. #bird #photo #photoproject #images #landscape #portrait #sharpshinnedhawk #hawk #birdsofprey #project #mountain #birdbanding
